00:47 jeffreykegler ronsavage: on new machines, I've been told, some of the hardware (Wifi, video, sleep mode) will typically not work with Linux until a few years have passed.
00:47 jeffreykegler On rare occasions, it might be useful to have a Windows machine.
00:49 jeffreykegler There are two readings of "Google: Best of Both Worlds".  One has it saying that ChromeOS is the best of both worlds.  The other has me doing a search which brings up a Hannah Montana song.  Should I prefer the first reading?
01:04 ronsavage Without checking every model, I'd say any new Lenovo laptop should be fine. You can search http://tuxmobil.org/lenovo.html. And what does ChromeOS offer that Debian doesn't?
02:21 Aria Lenovos are great with Linux.

04:38 jdurand Re http://irclog.perlgeek.de/marpa/2014-08-06#i_9145187 - if you do not want to waste your time with ystem administrator Windows is great IMHO
04:38 jdurand "with system administration"
04:40 jdurand the other advantage is technical: I often saw script writen on Windows running on Linux as-is, not the other way round - if it true as well for C programs: the cl compiler is very different v.s. gcc, and is just very good
04:41 jdurand Now, I am on Linux all day long at home, on Windows all work-day long at my office - this is very subjective -;

07:24 rns Lenovo — yes.
07:24 rns if you need windows — http://shop.lenovo.com/us/en/laptops/thinkpad/e-series/e431/#techspecs — $600 give or take.
07:27 rns Chrome OS is interesting and does its job, but dev-wise looks like just a terminal window, nothing more.
07:27 rns Hope this helps.

18:56 jeffreykegler If I go with Windows, I won't buy additional MS software, so I won't use cl.exe.  I've used Cygwin in the past, and I found it makes a liveable environment.
18:57 jeffreykegler I thinking under $400 -- above that I'm reluctant to carry it around with me a lot.
