05:53 jeffreykegler Re my next laptop -- Amazon has a Toshiba and an Asus laptop, each under US$300.  Toshiba (I think) has a good rep; and I've had very good experience with Asus.
05:53 jeffreykegler Any comments?

12:09 jdurand Re http://irclog.perlgeek.de/marpa/2014-08-13#i_9176361 - Asus is *ull**it - you /will/ have h/w with it within the next coming 2 years
12:10 jdurand I personnally have a Toshiba, and it runs very well - in case of Windows, like other manufacturers, it is recommended to remove almost all their add-ons - but not necessarly
12:11 jdurand If that is Windows, refuse to pay any license, uninstall Norton and/or Symantec Antivirus, very likely to be in it, and install a free antivisu like AVG
12:12 jdurand + MalwareBytes, that you will run regularly one a month - you will then be very well protected
12:12 jdurand If this is is not Windows, do as you want -;
12:16 jdurand "I meant antivirus license, office license etc...". For antivirus: AVG+MalwareBytes are ok for me. For office, LibreOffice is ok for me as well. The rest is peanuts.
12:25 jdurand Since you had good experience with Asus, maybe I was unlucky of course... all in all this is very subjective

16:58 jeffreykegler jdurand: Re Norton.  If it comes with a free 1-year subsscription, I assume there's no problem with using the free year.  Is there?

17:11 jdurand Re http://irclog.perlgeek.de/marpa/2014-08-13#i_9179361 - I'd say yes, the pb with Norton is that it is letting a lot of files/directories in a lot place that no uninstaller will be able to recover - except the "Notron Removal Tool", developped especially by Symantec for this, and that is of course never installed by default
17:12 jdurand now, the question of antivirus/antispyware is a moving target

21:39 Aria Toshiba should be at the end of their 'We don't suck' cycle right now. Probably still great. They had a horrible run into 2011. Fixed things right up after that.
21:39 Aria AVG + MalwareBytes ++
21:39 Aria And Norton --.
