03:00 ronsavage If I have N (e.g. 8) letters in a string, all different, what's the BNF for allowing any of 1 up to N letters, but never any duplicate letters.
03:08 idiosyncrat_ If I understood the problem correctly, that's something BNF cannot do.

03:09 idiosyncrat_ That is, short of some hack like taking advantage of the fact that your alphabet is finite and your string is finite (length 8) and enumerating all the legal strings.
03:09 ronsavage Ahhh. Thanx.
03:09 idiosyncrat_ Which is gruesome and impractical.
03:09 ronsavage I was wondering why absolutely nothing came to mind.
03:11 idiosyncrat_ As a very crude, over-simplified way of charactizing the capabilities of BNF ...
03:11 ronsavage I can easily accept a string and post-process it to reject duplicates, using - you guessed it! - hash keys.
03:11 idiosyncrat_ If you have an " a b c", where <c> depends on <a>.
03:12 idiosyncrat_ BNF cannot express that -- they have to be independent.

03:13 idiosyncrat_ AFK
03:13 ronsavage Nope. No interdependence.

06:13 idiosyncrat_ ronsavage: if <a> and <c> cannot be duplicates, that would be what I am calling, in this context, an interdependence.
06:14 idiosyncrat_ The two "depend" on each other's value in some way.
06:25 idiosyncrat_ Good night!

17:42 idiosyncrat_ Apparently Marpa::R2 is now a standard part of Ubuntu: http://manpages.ubuntu.com/manpages/xenial/man3/Marpa::R2.3pm.html

21:15 ronsavage Ah, yes. In that interpretation they are interdependent.
