04:26 idiosyncrat Demat!
04:27 idiosyncrat Some months ago I was annoyed with myself for the number of Marpa-related dead-ends I'd gone on ...
04:27 idiosyncrat in particular I started a rewrite of the Marpa paper, only to abandon it after some weeks of effort,
04:28 idiosyncrat and I determined to work on something that *would* have tangible results of some kind.
04:29 idiosyncrat The R3 rewrite qualifies -- it may appear that I'm in long-term alpha status -- and on one level I am ...
04:30 idiosyncrat but I keep the test suite working 100% and the docs up to date, which means that it could be forked as a stable release at any time.  That (to my mind) means it has "tangible results".
04:31 idiosyncrat Whether someone would really want to do the fork is of course another question ... that stable release would almost certainly be overtaken shortly by new hacks on R3, and maintenance would be dicier than for R2 --
04:32 idiosyncrat R2 I'm committed to fix bugs, whereas I'd be reluctant to take on a similar obligation for someone's release.
04:33 idiosyncrat But nonetheless, somebody *could* do a release of R3 any time.  And that's one reason I have take the incremental approach, keeping the test suite always working 100% and the docs up to date.
04:33 * idiosyncrat adds a final note
04:34 idiosyncrat There is an "asterisk" re my claim the docs are kept up to date.  When I make a change I identify all those sections of the docs clearly affected and change them.  But I don't reread the docs and at this point they're probably riddled with inconsistencies.  Fixing that will have to wait for the beta release.
04:35 idiosyncrat When I say "I don't reread the docs", what I meant was that I don't reread them from beginning to end in their entirety -- I do very much and repeatedly reread those docs directly affected by any change.
