05:26 omega inspired by todays release of CPAN::Changes 0.21, I decided to do this: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/s/ew28vaabk8fq6sk/Screen%20Shot%202013-07-30%20at%2012.26.10%20PM.png
05:29 omega no tests or anything so far, but interesting to try at least :)

12:42 dsteinbrunner question… why are bin files lumped in with Documentation?
12:43 dsteinbrunner I would think they deserve their own section
13:21 rwstauner dsteinbrunner: that's an implementation detail... it's not that they are "lumped in" with documentation, but rather that they "have" documentation (but are not indexed modules)
13:21 rwstauner the third category ("provides") are for modules that have neither
13:22 rwstauner that being said, creating a separate section for bin/ isn't a bad idea
13:37 dolmen rwstauner++
13:43 rwstauner as with many things bin isn't a standard but a convention
13:43 rwstauner i think some dists use script/
13:43 rwstauner not sure if there are others
13:43 rwstauner maybe some are directly in the root
13:43 rwstauner would be good to do a search to find out
14:22 talexb Morning .. sorry late, start today.
14:23 rwstauner ahoy!
14:24 talexb Just reloading and trying out your suggested change ..
14:24 rwstauner i've pushed a few fixes, so be sure to pull the puppet and developer repos
14:24 talexb Getting my step-son up to date on "Whatcha doing?"
14:24 talexb Oh, Puppet as well?
14:25 talexb OK, I think it's probably worth it to re-cycle the VM after I freshen everything.
14:25 rwstauner yeah, wouldn't hurt
14:28 klapperl joined #metacpan
14:30 rwstauner well, puppet isn't required but i did fix the install_modules thing
14:37 talexb Right. So you still want me to run the test as the vagrant user?
14:38 rwstauner currently yes, that's one that i can't work around until a new CPAN::Faker is released
14:39 rwstauner at least not easily
14:39 talexb Right ..
14:40 talexb OK, got past the part where it got stuck ..
14:40 talexb My three favourite words these days .. All tests successful.
14:41 rwstauner :-)
14:42 talexb Note that I couldn't do 'source /home/metacpan/.metacpanrc' because of privileges, but just issued the same command at the shell prompt. This is a workaround, after all.
14:44 rwstauner yeah, you're 5 minutes ahead of me ;-)
14:44 rwstauner i have a local fix for that, just not pushed yet
14:44 talexb :) It's very minor, but I do have a detail-oriented mind-set when it comes to stuff like that.
14:45 rwstauner very good
14:45 rwstauner just ran out of time last night
14:49 talexb Yup.
14:50 talexb So, a new problem .. running cpanm -n CPAN to start loading The Entire CPAN locally fails because the metacpan user can't write to the /usr/local/perlbrew directory.
14:50 talexb Should I file an issue for that?
14:51 rwstauner what is that command for?
14:51 rwstauner i believe that command is to install CPAN.pm without testing it
14:51 rwstauner did you see that command somewhere?
14:53 talexb It's right below the API test suite .. in the Setup a CPAN mirror section.

14:57 * rwstaune` has a flaky connection
14:58 rwstaune` yes, those instructions are incorrect
14:58 talexb :) OK then!
14:59 talexb I can work on something else -- don't feel you have to address everything I find.
14:59 talexb I'll file an issue, and come back to it later.
14:59 rwstauner sounds good
14:59 talexb I do need to get up to speed on other stuff.
14:59 rwstauner i'm not sure if ranguard or oalders have actually tried to do that section yet
14:59 talexb Thanks!
14:59 rwstauner np
14:59 rwstauner glad to have you aboard
15:00 talexb I'm guessing the documentation was written some time ago, and I'm the first person to go back and try it out.
15:00 talexb Thanks! Glad to be here!
15:00 * ranguard hasn't done any of the API side of things - just starting it up
15:01 ranguard talexb: which docs?
15:01 * ranguard heads home - will try login later, but I think it's mosly oalders's fault :)
15:01 talexb ranguard, The metacpan-developer README.
15:01 talexb ;)
15:01 oalders yeah, must be me ;)
15:01 ranguard oh, that's me :(
15:01 talexb \o/
15:01 talexb ranguard, Writing up an issue for that now.
15:01 oalders i think SineSwiper added those docs, but that was before I messed with the VM
15:02 rwstauner it's just the wrong user
15:02 rwstauner either use the install_modules script or execute 'cpanm -n CPAN' as the perlbrew user
15:02 ranguard oh, phew, it is oalders :)
15:02 rwstauner but i haven't reviewed the docs
15:02 * ranguard heads home
15:05 * talexb completes issue #5 on metacpan-developer.
15:05 * rwstauner pushes a few more fixes
15:17 oalders talexb: see my comment on #5
15:17 talexb Yep -- that worked.
15:17 oalders ok, great.  could you note that in the docs?
15:17 talexb What, add that step?
15:19 * talexb is fascinated to see that Uganda (I assume that's what .ug is) is only 30ms away. Wow.
15:30 rwstaune` joined #metacpan
15:57 oalders talexb: i just meant to be sure to improve the documentation as you go. however, in this case, it's something that could already be in the VM or in the puppet config
15:57 oalders i.e.: we could solve this without having the user get involved
15:58 talexb Sure -- I'm happy to add that line to the documentation, but I'm not sure that's your preferred change.
15:59 * talexb is now up to DCONWAY in his CPAN clone. We'll be here a while.
16:09 oalders talexb: right. well, let's just leave that issue open for the time being.  i'll either push a fix or add it to the docs :)
16:09 talexb Sure thing.
16:10 oalders talexb: one thing to note is that you don't need the entire CPAN in order to get started
16:10 oalders if you already have some of it, you can play around with indexing etc
16:11 talexb :) I just decided to download the entire thing.
16:11 oalders in fact, i think that just have a small subset of the data is the way to go in most cases
16:11 oalders no problem with that, but don't feel like you have to *index* the entire thing
16:11 talexb I'm at ECARROLL -- his But::Maintained modules always make me smile. What a character.
16:11 oalders :)
16:13 * talexb wonders if metacpan has 'pick a module at random' button .. it seems there are quite a few undiscovered jewels lying around.
16:17 * talexb decides to go out for a bike ride to settle lunch.

18:44 talexb Yep, 3.5 hours to clone CPAN. That was entertaining.
18:51 oalders talexb: that was the minicpan?
18:55 talexb Yes.
18:56 oalders so, you're pretty close to being productive :)
18:57 talexb Yeah. I still have a ton of stuff to learn.
18:57 talexb I've essentially been mostly out of the Perl galaxy for two years, but need to get back in, big-time.
18:58 talexb But it's a lot of time digging through these tools and setting stuff up.
