01:37 omega I just figured starting from the oldest and moving forward, closing things that cannot be reproduced, and submitting fixes for simple things was a good idea :P

04:43 omega although on a technicality :P
04:43 omega since I assume I'm only there because 'o' is before 'p' and 'r' in the alphabet :P

05:05 ether so I just did an upload a few minutes ago...

11:21 run4flat I have a confusion: it looks like my distribution's README.pod is being displayed instead of my module's pod: https://metacpan.org/module/DCMERTENS/C-TinyCompiler-0.02/lib/C/TinyCompiler.pm

11:24 ribasushi :(

20:18 thaljef Here's a crazy idea: paid advertisement of modules on MetaCPAN.
20:19 thaljef Say $5 get's you listed on the front page for a week.
20:19 thaljef Or you can get fancy with keyword-based placement.
20:20 thaljef I know money is evil and all.  But it helps pay your bills, and authors can promote their work.
20:21 thaljef As you can tell, I think a lot about how to monetize open source work.
20:26 oalders :)
20:28 oalders you'd need to be set up to take the $, have a place to keep it, be accountable in some way for what happens to it. those sorts of logistical problems really complicate things
20:39 thaljef All solvable problems.  Start small.  I'm sure expectations would be low at first.  Then see how much interest emerges.
20:40 thaljef You've already done the hard part: build an audience.
20:52 grantm does the front page of metacpan get a lot of eyeballs? I never see it
20:55 thaljef grantm: Then put it on all the module or distro pages then -- wherever.  My point is, you have an asset.  It can be capitalized for the benefit of all.
20:56 grantm joined #metacpan
21:06 ether not just paid advertisement of modules, but paid advertisement of *anything*
21:06 ether e.g. IT services
21:06 ether or anything of interest to people looking at modules
21:10 thaljef ether: Absolutely.  Lots of possibilities.  As a project and organization, MetaCPAN has a certain distance from perl.org.  I think that gives it some flexibility to do things a bit differently, yet still be of great service to the community.
21:20 thaljef Today has been one of those days.  I see so much opportunity to grow the community, engage with brilliant people, and achieve great things.  But I'm just not sure how to rally others.
21:20 thaljef But I'm getting off topic.  I'll stop now.
21:22 talexb All good ideas .. at least putting ads on the web site reminds everyone that this is a business, even if it's also a bit of a hobby. :)
21:23 talexb Interesting .. just got the Angry Rainbow Unicorn from github .. never seen that before.
21:24 thaljef That's right -- it is a business.  It is the business of growing and promoting perl.  I feel we've forgotten how to do that.
21:31 oalders it's a worthwhile discussion and perl promotion likely needs a bit of a boost

21:33 t0m oalders: ?
21:33 dipsy oalders:  are there any updates regarding our little hardware problem? :)
21:33 oalders t0m: sorry. was just getting context. this ticket is about installing Module::Metadata
21:33 t0m <cry>
21:33 ribasushi thaljef: how... does serving 3rd party ads on metacpan help perl promotion...?
21:33 ribasushi I understand making some money for metacpan
21:34 ribasushi but perl promotion...?
21:45 talexb Yeah, sorry, that's me causing trouble again. :/
21:47 talexb Running the test suites now.
21:47 ether it helps if they are promoting companies using perl
21:47 ether like II, shadowcat, Tamarou...
21:47 ether we can all go to our employers and ask for advertising :)
21:48 ether would booking.com advertise on metacpan? sure why not, if they got a good rate
21:48 talexb Sell company logos on metacpan.org ..
21:51 talexb Web and API tests all good. :)
21:55 * talexb goes off to a board meeting.
21:57 oalders ether: well, booking already donates a server to us ;)
22:00 thaljef ribasushi: as you pointed out, it helps finance the operation and development of MetaCPAN itself.  It also benefits those who place the ads and those who click on them.
22:01 thaljef Advertising is not inherently evil.  It is there to connect people.  And if the ad doesn't suit the audience, then it doesn't get clicked.  And if it doesn't get clicked, advertisers take there money somewhere else.
22:02 thaljef Google shows us thousands of ads a day.  But we accept it because they provide a useful service.  And occasionally, we see an ad that is genuinely useful.
22:03 thaljef MetaCPAN has a well defined audience, and can select advertisers appropriately.
22:03 thaljef I think it would be a great channel for authors like you to promote your work, attract contributors, and build your own businesses around the open source work that you already do.
22:04 thaljef And if it helps you, then you're helping the Perl community.
