11:18 Talina Hi, my name is Talina. I will be participating in GSoC 2014 and was interested in MetaCPAN. Could someone please suggest me links to start with?
11:29 haarg Talina: not sure exactly what you are asking for.  getting started with developing?  getting started with ideas?
11:30 haarg you'll probably have a bit better luck in a few hours - most people in this channel are on US time of some form
11:31 ranguard Talina: Hi!
11:33 ranguard Talina: oalders is probably the best point of contact for most stuff, but let me get you a few links together
11:33 Talina Hi. I went through the ideas page that was posted at Gsoc by the perl foundation. I am relatively new to metacpan/ Cpan APIs. So I would want to read more about it.
11:33 ranguard Talina: any specific area you are interested in? - Elasticsearch / writing docs / Web interface / API interface / All of it :) ?
11:34 ranguard https://metacpan.org/about is the top level over view
11:34 dipsy [ MetaCPAN About - metacpan.org ]
11:34 ranguard https://github.com/CPAN-API/metacpan-developer - we have a Virtual Machine for developing on (so setup it quite easy)
11:34 dipsy [ CPAN-API/metacpan-developer · GitHub ]
11:35 ranguard https://github.com/CPAN-API/metacpan-web is our web front end, https://github.com/CPAN-API/metacpan-web/issues is our bug list, https://github.com/CPAN-API/cpan-api/wiki/Wishlist is our feature wish list (e.g. not bugs but would be great to have someone work on)

11:36 ranguard https://github.com/CPAN-API/cpan-api is the API (a layer over Elasticsearch - the backend NoSQL)

11:37 ranguard Talina: so we have lots that could be worked on... we also have some great people around to help

11:42 ranguard Talina: was that the sort of thing you were after?
11:43 Talina Yes. :)
11:46 ranguard Talina: let me know if you have any other questions, I do mostly sysadmin and tweaking type stuff, so might not be able to answer techncial bits, but I will be able to point you at the right person
11:47 Talina Great! I will do that. Apart from irc, how else can I contact you?
11:48 ranguard oalders (who's email I think is on the ideas page) is the best contact atm, but noc@metacpan.org is all the key people
11:49 Talina alright. Thanks!
11:49 ranguard either is fine
11:50 ranguard Talina: Out of interest what sort of thing are you wanting to work on (in general rather than for just us) :) ?
11:57 Talina I am more interested in web and cpan apis. Out of the topics listed, I found "Web of trust" interesting. But, I really need to do more research on it.
12:12 ranguard Talina: ok - well, let us know - we'd love some work on OAuth and we want to build up 'I trust X, Y, Z people so show me the Modules they have favourited'
12:13 ranguard we also want to add tagging and recommendations to modules which would also related to that
12:13 ranguard (there is the start of a pull request for that I believe)
12:22 Talina Yes. I am reading about the same right now. Will keep posting here. :)

13:52 ranguard Talina -> oalders... oalders -> Talina
13:53 * ranguard does the introductions
13:53 oalders Talina: thanks very much for getting in touch.  i got your email.  ask me anything :)
13:54 ribasushi Talina: the "web of trust" bullet is a tad mislabeled - that is if you go on researching web-of-trust you will (likely) end up with the wrong idea
13:55 ribasushi the task is basically about floating up modules by "trusted authors" based on crowd input (++ing modules, possibly ++ing authors themselves, etc). So more akin to "google pagerank" as opposed to WoT as defined by say pgp
13:57 oalders right, but what autarch was proposing is that you can flag the authors which you in particular trust
13:58 oalders so your web may not be someone else's
13:58 ribasushi ah, good, I missed that while skimming it
13:59 oalders i missed it first time too.  he corrected me :)
13:59 ribasushi oalders: really though the authorship analysis work is needed to make this usable
13:59 ribasushi i.e. I don't trust any code originally created say by autarch, but I don't mind code where he was a releaser ;)
13:59 oalders sure, make it more complicated!
14:00 ribasushi I am handwaving here, it can be plugged at a later stage
14:00 ribasushi just pointing it's not very usable for large projects
14:02 Talina hi! :) Ok, so I understood the idea. I wanted to know, how do we go about implementing it?
14:03 oalders ribasushi: right. hadn't considered that.
14:03 oalders Talina: probably a good idea to get the VM up and running first, so that you can get familiar with the codebase? https://github.com/CPAN-API/metacpan-developer
14:03 dipsy [ CPAN-API/metacpan-developer · GitHub ]
14:04 Talina Yes, Ok.. I will do that.
14:05 oalders Talina: can you also email me a resume or something that tells us a little more about you?
14:06 oalders would be helpful to know what you are studying and where etc
14:06 Talina Alright, I will mail you my resume and a brief bio about me. :)
14:07 Talina Yes, definitely.
14:09 oalders Talina: a gave a couple of talks on getting started with the VM
14:10 oalders *I gave

14:10 oalders http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=576nhptjT8A
14:10 dipsy [ TPM Hacking The Metacpan - YouTube ]
14:10 oalders those would probably be good starting points
14:11 oalders we could get you started on a small bug fix first and then talk about solving a bigger problem
14:13 Talina Yes, that is fine by me. I will go through all the links you mentioned and is it okay if I ping you back after a few hours? once I have got the VM running?
14:16 ranguard Talina: don't ask.. just ping :)
14:19 Talina Haha! Alright! :)
14:27 tobyink Sorting out MetaCPAN's notions of releasers vs authors vs contributors is probably  a prerequisite for any useful web of trust work.
15:34 neilb yup. and the definition of "owner" for a dist can be ambiguous, as different people can have the 'f' permission for modules in the same dist.
15:38 ranguard authors =~ releasers for a good enough approximation imho in a trusted group, but I'm also more interested in following recommendations/favs of X user (whether they have a PAUSE account or not)

19:54 ether now yes

19:57 rashi oalders: Hi, I am new to metaCPAN, I would like to contribute to its API Documentation, can you help me in getting started with it?
20:04 oalders rashi: hello!
20:05 oalders do you have any experience with Perl? (it's ok if you don't)
20:05 rashi No, sorry I don't.
20:06 oalders but you have Python on your resume, correct?
20:07 rashi Yes, I have worked in python.
20:07 oalders ok, great
20:09 oalders as a start, could you try to get our VM up and running? https://github.com/CPAN-API/metacpan-developer
20:09 dipsy [ CPAN-API/metacpan-developer · GitHub ]
20:10 oalders you don't need to write code to do docs, but having access to the working code will be essential
20:10 oalders since there are things which just are not documented (but should be)
20:10 oalders i gave a couple of talks on how MetaCPAN works: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qSKbVm4SnUk and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=576nhptjT8A
20:10 dipsy [ 2013-10-24 perl5i + MetaCPAN VM for Dummies - YouTube ] [ TPM Hacking The Metacpan - YouTube ]
20:11 oalders those should give a really good introduction and are a good basis for understanding where the docs need to be improved
20:12 rashi Sure, I'll compile the code and get back to you.
20:13 oalders rashi: great. which time zone are you on?
20:16 rashi oalders: IST
20:17 oalders rashi: i'm GMT -5, so there will be a fair amount of time where we don't overlap, but there are lots of people here who can answer your questions
20:21 chansen joined #metacpan
20:33 rashi oalders: Thanks. I'll try to make the most of the time wherein you're here. :)
21:30 ether w00t, hello new folks!
