11:11 mgv how do I indicate that I don't want an avatar via authors-*.json? (or, alternatively, that I want it taken from a certain URL instead of gravatar)

11:26 ranguard mgv: https://metacpan.org/account/profile
11:27 ranguard has a 'Avatar' field
11:27 mgv that would require me to create an account. I am using author.json
11:27 ranguard oh, sorry don't know for that
11:29 mgv it might help if I could find somebody who has an avatar that is not from gravatar
13:39 ChoiKyuSang joined #metacpan
14:13 oalders mgv: _if_ it works, you'd have to set gravatar_url in your author.json
14:14 oalders haven't checked the code though
14:14 mgv I've tried setting it to an empty string and then to null, neither worked.
14:14 mgv maybe a real URL works, I'll try that
15:06 mgv oalders: that did not work. metacpan seems to simply ignore gravatar_url in author.json
15:14 oalders mgv: yeah, just checked the code, as it stands it won't work
15:15 oalders mgv: why can't you create an account and manage it that way?
15:17 mgv I don't really care about the avatar. I was just wondering whether I could control it via author.json
15:18 mgv since author.json lets me control everything else, I'll stick to that
15:18 mgv thanks for the help
15:18 oalders :)

15:33 tomboh I'm getting 404 responses for requests under /_asset_less/ for example when I request https://metacpan.org/pod/File::Temp
15:33 dipsy [ File::Temp - return name and handle of a temporary file safely - metacpan.org ]
15:33 tomboh if more information would be useful, let me know what
15:34 oalders tomboh: so you're not getting the CSS for this page?
15:35 tomboh correct - I noticed the error because the page looks unstyled
15:35 oalders i've been seeing that off and on myself :(
15:35 tomboh I'm getting two 404s, one for a .css file and one for .js
15:35 ranguard tomboh: https://metacpan.org/_asset_less/2a10f77f00071436fa2972a8a4a713cb.css - working for me
15:35 oalders ranguard: does fastly serve that file?
15:36 tomboh yes, that works for me, but https://metacpan.org/_asset_less/0dc25fe838116da155ee59723997ecb8.css fails
15:36 ranguard oalders: yes
15:36 oalders whenever i see it, it works again after a refresh
15:36 tomboh when I refresh the File::Temp page I get a 304 back and the content points to the asset mentioned above
15:37 ranguard oalders: https://metacpan.org/_asset_less/0dc25fe838116da155ee59723997ecb8.css seems to be returning 404 from our servers
15:38 oalders ranguard: why do we even have _asset_less if there's another endpoint for CSS?
15:38 ranguard oh, umm, tomboh https://metacpan.org/_asset/0da2868b9e8e99932ca2fd6398600b3d.js <- note the .js?
15:39 ranguard arrg, I'm getting confused
15:39 tomboh ranguard: that one works fine :)
15:40 tomboh my client is requesting https://metacpan.org/_asset/a25c857b97ec9510f8f72d4d9b60167d.js though
15:40 ranguard tomboh: could you do a force refresh on https://metacpan.org/pod/File::Temp please
15:40 dipsy [ File::Temp - return name and handle of a temporary file safely - metacpan.org ]
15:41 tomboh a forced refresh fixes the problem, thank you
15:41 tomboh but I assume there's still something odd going on as my client was sending an "If-Modified-Since Thu, 10 Oct 2013 13:17:32 GMT" request which seems reasonable
15:41 ranguard oalders: that's the browser caching a link to /_asset/ that goes after the server is restarted
15:42 tomboh the server still has 2013-10-10 as the Last-Modified date even though the response body refers to different assets
15:42 ranguard tomboh: the module hasn't changed, but the assets for the page have
15:42 tomboh ah, so the server generates "Last-Modified" incorrectly?
15:43 ranguard yea, we're not quite sure of the correct solution
15:43 ranguard this came up recently, and we agreed... we're not sure of the correct soluiton :)
15:43 tomboh well thank you both for helping me see a properly rendered page :)
15:44 ranguard oalders: the _asset gets changed IF the css has changed obviously, really I wonder if now is time to versionise our assets and store them historically, another one for someone's long list :)
15:45 oalders versions would be great
15:45 oalders this middleware solution is more of a get up and running type of thing
15:45 oalders but yeah, add it to the very long list :)
15:46 ranguard get up / running / bite you in the arse :)
15:47 ranguard tomboh: so... would you like to get to know the metacpan code base ;) ?
15:50 * tomboh mumbles something about tuits
15:50 tomboh I think I got as far as "git clone" once..
15:54 ranguard tomboh: that's a start.. :)

17:17 haarg i've worked at various times on having the assets get stored on disk after generation, and then serving them from there
17:18 haarg which would generally perform better, although it doesn't matter much given fastly
17:20 haarg but with multiple servers, that doesn't really solve the issue
17:45 ranguard would have to be a script in the repo - not automagic (automagic for dev is ok, but not deploy)
