11:00 kentnl in this specific case, couldn't you get around the need for a textwidth lookup entirely and just fade the end of the text out regardless of wether or not "width" > "box" using a semitransparent gradient over the image?
11:00 kentnl over the text*
11:03 kentnl also, there's a CSS-3 property that should solve this anyway. `text-overflow: ellipsis`

11:41 haarg as i posted on the issue, the end of the text is often some of the most useful
11:41 haarg especially on the recent page
11:45 kentnl Isn't that concern alleviated somewhat by the full form being in the alt-text?
11:58 kentnl This feels like it would make a good stackoverflow question

12:41 kentnl haarg: would computing a table of letter widths help? Or can we expect to see ligatures to be a problem?
13:09 kentnl Well, the good news is I've managed to perform my "wat, why is this taking so long" problem in isolation now, without any network resources.
13:10 kentnl Static HTML file with only a handfull of JS functions + JQuery, page randomly takes 5 seconds to load.

15:16 dolmen about my problem with Pod::Wordlist, it appears that I lack the co-maint on this module. I'm resolving this...
15:27 ranguard dolmen: please close the ticket (if not already) :)

18:43 haarg kentnl: i've looked around stackoverflow and couldn't fine anything viable
18:44 kentnl yeah. I did as well. And then I asked one in the hope it would garner some interesting results =)
18:47 haarg the current ellipsis code we have is something i've hated for a long time
18:47 kentnl A side thought: If you could detect the oversized case and replace the cell with 3 smaller cells, the first left aligned, the middle with "…", and the right with the same text as the first, but right-aligned + overflow in the opposite direction ( assuming text overflow does what I expect ), you could leave it up to the browser to work out the rest
18:47 haarg i just haven't come up with a good solution, and it hasn't been brought up as a concrete issue until now

18:51 kentnl I'm not 100% sure its "my issue", but I keep hitting "something" when trying to resolve my issue, and this is the biggest fish I can find

19:01 kentnl Ugh. My CSS is so rusty. I can't seem to trick a combo of text-align and overflow to do it, so I'm hoping I can draw a box and right-align it with another box and have that box clip the other box

19:04 metacpan [cpan-api] ranguard pushed 1 new commit to leo/cache_3_api: https://git.io/vgJtD
19:04 metacpan cpan-api/leo/cache_3_api 6c773fc Leo Lapworth: use Net::Fastly - add to snapshot

19:05 kentnl http://imgur.com/Cx0XZqD  # This is basically what I'm hoping is possible
19:05 kentnl if we can do that, we don't have to ever compute textwidth
19:06 ranguard ++
19:06 ranguard (to the idea, no clus on css myself I'm afraid)
19:08 ranguard haarg: please could you sanity check https://github.com/CPAN-API/metacpan-web/pull/1642 and comment when you have a moment
19:08 kentnl ( Actually, you'd probably still need textwidth to work out if the bounding box needs to be split, but that's reducing the number of computations from ~10-per-link to 1-per-link
19:15 kentnl oh lawd. direction: rtl
19:15 kentnl Time to try http://stackoverflow.com/a/12646655/15614

19:26 ranguard anyone know why `sudo apt-get install libgmp-dev` now fails: https://travis-ci.org/CPAN-API/cpan-api/jobs/106292724
19:27 ranguard or rather - what it needs to be replaced with
19:35 ilmari ranguard: it is in the main section in ubuntu precise, so it should work
19:36 ilmari try doing a 'sudo apt-get update' first
19:37 ilmari ranguard: http://packages.ubuntu.com/<packagename> is handy
19:47 ranguard ilmari: cheers
