13:19 ranguard https://www.dynstatus.com/ - DDOS on our DNS - may or maynot affect us
13:21 alh Yeah, it will
13:21 alh Though it *appears* that it may be getting better now
13:21 alh At least stuff is resolving here again
13:23 ranguard thanks

16:37 ilmari oh, metacpan seems to be affected by the DynDNS DDoS
16:42 mst yep
17:43 [Tux] Date: Fri, 21 Oct 2016 18:43:16 +0200 (CEST)

17:45 alh Dyn (metacpan's DNS provider) is experiencing troubles due to DDoS

19:54 toddr So this is disturbing...
19:54 toddr dig @8.8.8.8 metacpan.org
19:54 toddr ;metacpan.org.INA
19:54 toddr is there a DNS problem?
20:00 toddr I'm being told by others there's a DDOS going on against some major DNS providers.
20:03 mst toddr: yes, specifically Dyn, which handles metacpan's DNS
20:04 toddr yep got it https://krebsonsecurity.com/2016/10/ddos-on-dyn-impacts-twitter-spotify-reddit/
20:13 toddr anyone got a static IP in the mean time?
20:17 mst try 23.235.33.143
20:25 Grinnz huh. apparently all those new internet-enabled smart home devices are contributing to the massive DDoSes lately
20:28 mst shockingly enough
20:30 jberger yep, tiny little bot-net devices :D
20:30 jberger IoT is looking really bad to me lately
20:31 jberger I've been researching self-hosted IoT
20:31 jberger its a pretty small segment
20:33 mst everything seems to be trying to be cloud
20:33 mst CLOUD (NOUN, ADJ) Stuff you can't fix when it breaks.
20:33 Grinnz it probably doesn't help that ISPs hate when you self host stuff
20:34 Grinnz i finally figured out that regular HTTP wasn't working on my homeserver from outside because optimum is blocking port 80 but not 443
20:34 Grinnz good news is they will probably unblock it if i get around to calling them
20:34 jberger alt. CLOUD (NOUN, ADJ) stuff that breaks when someone else turns them off
20:35 Grinnz also, stuff that you don't have to pay real humans to manage
20:35 Grinnz which is why we're trying to move our stuff to aws
20:36 jberger Grinnz: if you need hosting, I know a guy ... :-P
20:36 Grinnz hosting isn't the problem. adminning all these random servers on the other hand
20:36 Grinnz and network setup, etc etc
20:37 mst if your apps aren't pre-designed for AWS
20:37 mst something like softlayer or servercentral may be well worth costing out
20:37 mst also if you want "cloud" maybe digitalocean
20:38 Grinnz well the main reason they wanted to go to AWS is the various options for having them manage the database server
20:38 Grinnz and i guess eventually using their special mysql thing
20:38 Grinnz i'm just happy because it will be easy to convince them to let me spin up a postgres RDS
20:39 toddr it's a little surprising AWS doesn't do DNS
20:39 nick it does, people just don't use that
20:40 nick https://aws.amazon.com/route53/
20:40 Grinnz i have no doubt they've looked into using that as well
20:41 Grinnz as long as all the services we use can still be accessed by traditional means rather than their API bullshit, it's a net win for me
20:45 nick the AWS API is a nightmare
20:46 nick I've had to use API features unsupported by even Paws recently :(
20:53 mst ah, es, RDS the bane of #postgresql
20:56 Grinnz how so?
20:57 Grinnz it's just a managed db server, they even have recent versions available
20:57 mst there are fewer knobs to turn and EBS is EBS
20:58 Grinnz hmm i still dont really know the deal with EBS
20:59 mst unless you pay through the nose for PIOPS expect performance around the level of a 5400rpm laptop drive from eight years ago, except with higher variability
21:00 mst I, quite seriously, once shipped the data I was working on back to my X61 thinkpad to process it there for the I/O performance
21:00 Grinnz it looks like RDS instances are at least using provisioned SSD storage
21:01 mst but, yeah, #postgresql does a lot of "oh, yeah, so, you can fix that by doi-no, you're on RDS, they don't give you access to that"
21:01 Grinnz aurora on the other hand is using using "DB Cluster" storage, whatever that means
