07:14 sri heh
07:15 ysyrota joined #mojo
07:17 sri dotan: actually i couldn't, since i don't own Thesis yet :(
07:17 Alias_ "don't own Thesis yet"?
07:18 sri the typeface
07:18 Alias_ ah
07:18 * Alias_ was thinking PhD or something
07:18 dotan Ransom-note the online sample image...
07:18 Grauwolf sri: shellscript :P
07:18 * sri has no education at all
07:18 Grauwolf well it's not a language by itself
07:19 Alias_ sri: Well you're doing a good job of writing :)
07:20 sri Me fail english? That's unpossible!
07:20 Alias_ I imagine your (German, right?) is equally bad
07:20 Grauwolf sri: a list of languages http://www.99-bottles-of-beer.net/abc.html :P
07:20 garfield [ 99 Bottles of Beer | Browse category A ]
07:20 Alias_ Primary school is handy for speaking
07:21 sri aye german
07:21 sri hmm... what could bash be
07:21 Alias_ s/speaking/writing/
07:22 sri shell has no personality :/
07:22 sri Grauwolf: i could also look at the tiobe index ;)
07:23 Grauwolf sri: ah. right.
07:26 dotan sri: Haskell?
07:27 dotan Or is that the year before last's shiny?
07:27 Grauwolf i wonder wich language would be georgia (<3)
07:28 yko joined #mojo
07:28 Alias_ Georgian?
07:29 sri added objective-c :)
07:29 dotan I think C# could be Arial: broadly used, highly derivative
07:29 sri good idea
07:29 Alias_ What's Perl
07:29 sri Gill Sans
07:29 Alias_ Python is clearly Comic Sans
07:30 sri http://twitter.com/kraih/status/18333523551
07:30 garfield [ Twitter / Sebastian Riedel: If #perl was a typeface it ... ]
07:30 Grauwolf nope. comic sans = evil; php = evil so it fits
07:30 dotan Visual Basic is of course Comics Sans.
07:30 Alias_ oh indeed
07:30 sri php is comic sans
07:30 Alias_ PHP is a better Comic Sans
07:30 dotan OK, that's actually better (php)
07:31 Alias_ C is clearly Courier
07:31 dotan php is the visual basic of this generation.
07:31 sri http://www.mcsweeneys.net/links/monologues/15comicsans.html # you could totally replace comic sans with php here
07:31 garfield [ Timothy McSweeney's Internet Tendency: I'm Comic Sans, Asshole. ]
07:31 garfield http://xrl.us/bhosit
07:31 Grauwolf sri already posted c and php
07:31 Alias_ Assembly is brail
07:31 Alias_ (Because of the whole punch card aspect)
07:33 sri not sure about c++
07:33 Alias_ Courier New? :)
07:33 Alias_ Maybe C is System
07:33 sri it could have been Thesis too, since there are like 100000 glyphs nobody knows about
07:34 Alias_ Courier New doesn't add much, but it would add uniformity
07:34 Alias_ sri: Microsoft Arial Unicode?
07:34 sri C is Times
07:34 Alias_ 18meg font
07:34 Alias_ Has every character on the entire first plane
07:35 Alias_ Bloatiest font I've ever encountered at work
07:35 sri as a designer i refuse to mention arial...
07:35 Alias_ Any of the Microsoft XXXX Unicode would do
07:35 Alias_ But I think there's only 2 or 3 of them
07:36 Alias_ Visual Basic is Trebuchet
07:37 Alias_ ooo
07:37 Alias_ ABAP is "Arial Monospaced for SAP"
07:37 sri oh i know, c++ can be a dingbat font :)
07:37 Alias_ The language of the company so boring they ship their own version of monospaced Arial
07:37 sri good one
07:37 dotan All Hebrew websites either use Arial or are soundly mocked.
07:39 Alias_ dotan: Because of the Microsoft Arial thing?
07:39 Alias_ The only font you can be sure will have all the glyphs?
07:40 Alias_ sri: Erlang can hardly be considered "hopefully overused"
07:40 arthas joined #mojo
07:40 Alias_ Erlang's problem is that it's wonderful, but only worth it in such a small number of situations
07:42 dotan Alias_: Probably. There's a limited number of Hebrew fonts, you need to pick the ones that don't suck and are universally available (i.e, in Windows).
07:42 sri maybe my choice of words was unfortunate, but thats basically what i had in mind
07:42 Alias_ yup
07:42 Alias_ dotan: I'm on XP here, and the only unicode font I see is Microsoft Arial Unicode
07:42 dotan Also, Hebrew serifs are pretty heavy, and a serif font looks much better in print than on screen
07:42 Alias_ Wow, I wonder what font we use for Padre's About dialog
07:43 Alias_ The hebrew looks horendous
07:43 sri Helvetica :)
07:43 sri it's pretty much idiot proof for such tasks
07:44 Alias_ Helvitica for Hebrew?
07:44 Alias_ I don't even have it on my OS
07:44 sri oh hebrew...hmm
07:45 dotan Alias_: looks like you use the system font (whatever that is) in Padre.
07:45 dotan http://corky.net/dotan/log/2010/03/mirror-localization-padre-wxwindows.html
07:45 garfield [ mirror localization (padre, wxwindows) | Distractions ]
07:45 garfield http://xrl.us/bhrmqv
07:46 Alias_ Maybe we can specify Arial in About
07:46 Alias_ Looks like Arial to me already
07:46 dotan Alias_: look at the reversed about page.
07:46 Alias_ But I don't get the Big 5 languages
07:47 sri think i would want to control the about dialog and use a picture
07:47 Alias_ I agree
07:48 Alias_ Unfortunately, the use of images is not as easy as you might think
07:48 Alias_ It bloats the tarball, and managing tracking ownership and licensing is tricky
07:48 Alias_ We already have to include an entirely separate splash screen for Debian
07:49 Alias_ We've done a lot to make sure we are compatible with every single different downstream packager
07:49 Alias_ But the paperwork can be a little onerous at times
07:49 sri ah ok, i make my own images
07:49 Alias_ Plus, images make it harder to add new people
07:49 Alias_ Unfortunately, our butterfly only lives in South American rainforests
07:50 Alias_ And it's rare to see one even then
07:50 Alias_ And don't even mention Flickr
07:50 sri i bet it's totally worth a trip
07:51 sri "this pretty dialog only cost us two developers"
07:51 Alias_ :)
07:52 Alias_ We'll send the Brazillians, they should hopefully not be killed
07:52 sri "we are hopeful that a third missing one can still be rescued"
07:56 dotan I recall a couple of these butterflies mounted in a display in the Life Sciences building in Tel Aviv Uni. It looks like the leaf is photoshopped in there anyway, so.
07:56 sri i really want to use Avenir Next for a project, such a great looking typeface
07:57 sri true, you can most likely get good shots in a museum, possibly even in front of a neutral background

08:19 Alias We did bump the colour brightness a bit for that more stylistic look

10:34 LoonyPandora sri - loving your typeface tweets /me spent his last 2 years at uni studying typography.
10:34 sri :)
10:38 LoonyPandora Though I did a dissertation about how horrible Gill Sans was. Which didn't go down well in London… So equating it with Perl didn't feel good ;)
10:38 sri many people hate it
10:39 sri but i think it has a special charme
10:40 LoonyPandora I did it mainly to annoy my tutors, because they loved it, all being londoners.
10:42 sri or can you think of a more appropriate typeface to represent perls quirkiness? :)
10:46 LoonyPandora Archer. Versatile, a little quirky, and coming into fashion (like perl, hopefully) - http://typography.com/fonts/font_overview.php?productLineID=100033
10:46 garfield [ Archer | Hoefler & Frere-Jones ]
10:46 garfield http://xrl.us/bhrm9s
10:46 LoonyPandora (though for the layman, gill sans is probably best)
10:51 sri i was looking for classics, i doubt anyone knows Archer just from the name
10:52 sri most didn't even know Thesis
10:53 sri also not sure i see perl with serifs :)
10:56 LoonyPandora fair enough - for ruby I'd have gone for Mrs Eaves. pure hipster! And a bit more famous than thesis, I think.
10:59 sri that would have worked
10:59 sri thesis would have been great for c++ too
