12:02 batman can i find the source code for mojolicio.us somewhere?
12:02 Britzel cpan?
12:02 purl rumour has it cpan is http://www.cpan.org or http://metacpan.org
12:02 batman i mean the webpage http://mojolicio.us
12:03 Britzel Right click - view page source.
12:05 batman Britzel: i don't think we met. i'm batman. i'm on cpan. i've read most of the source code for mojolicio.us. i develop web pages, backends and telecom systems in perl. i know about firebug, but i mostly use web dev tools in chrome. i'm not a novice.
12:05 batman please stop treating me as one.
12:07 dross batman: to get the source, you need to smoke pot and eat the toe jam like RMS does
12:07 batman rms?
12:07 purl rumour has it rms is Raving, Mad and Silly. or root mean square or Richard M. Stallman, GNU guru or self-defeating. or taking a cue from Microsoft "embrace, extend, etc." :-)  (GNU/Linux anyone?) or see rms song or rms remix or http://xrl.us/bfdja / /  or a freak (see http://www.stallman.org/saintignucius.jpg) or not a killer yet. or repetitive mistake syndrome or http://xrl.us/bfdi8 or la revue mathématique de spéciale
12:08 batman i thought i had seen the source code before...
12:09 dross https://github.com/kraih/mojolicio.us
12:09 dross the source is one giant perl file :)
12:09 dross you're welcome
12:10 * batman feels like a novice now
12:10 batman :D
12:10 dross odd, I'm a high school dropout and was able to find it :P
12:11 batman nothing wrong with being a high school dropout
12:11 dross I know :) I tend to earn more than most in the field, you don't have to tell me ;)
12:11 batman hehe. i'm not a dropout, but i don't use *anything* i learned in school these days.
12:12 batman maybe except english. norwegian and some math...
12:13 dross I enjoyed school quite honestly, I was one who was picked  upon, until I defended myself
12:13 dross in a way, it helped me become what I am today
12:13 purl today is a good day
12:14 batman yeah, i enjoyed it as well. i just made the wrong choice
12:14 dross batman: wrong choice?
12:15 dross There's really no right or wrong, people can accelerate in any circumstance
12:15 batman yeah. i studied electronics instead of computer science...or even design.
12:15 dross I'm sure there's more people like me, I started as a sysadmin/programmer when I was about 19-20
12:15 ObseLeTe joined #mojo
12:15 dross ah
12:15 dross hmm
12:16 dross I don't have a degree, though I'm quite a showoff :)
12:16 dross all you really need to do is read plenty of CS related books
12:17 batman i'm like you :) started programming perl when i was 19. had been doing html and js since i was 15
12:17 dross batman: I'm not sure how it is elsewhere, but places in the US, even if the job states a requirement for a BS in CS, they've overlooked it
12:19 batman bs, cs?
12:19 batman dross: i got a job which i'm very happy with. i'm working with an awesome team every day :)
12:21 dross bs == Bachelor of Science
12:21 dross 4 year degree in the US
12:21 dross batman: just don't "settle" :P
12:21 dross people can be more than they are if they tried
12:23 sri cs degree doesn't seem worth it considering how much they cost in the us
12:23 dross sri: which is why I've no interest in going for a CS degree
12:23 * sri often wished he had studied cs though
12:24 dross Personally, if I did go to college, I'd prefer some business degree which I could use in IT
12:24 dross sri: self study :3
12:25 * sri is an autodidact
12:25 dross 800 page books only take a day of study. If you're a math guy, you should breeze through CS books
12:25 batman dross: i'm making http://wirc.pl/ with marcus and http://getbetsy.com with some other friends, so i wouldn't say i'm settled :)
12:26 batman sri: me to
12:26 batman thanks for spelling "autodidact" for me! i've been looking for that word in a while :)
12:26 batman need to check if it's the same in norwegian...

18:03 sri tempire_: i guess a good mojolicious book would start with a few web development for dummies chapters, expecting no prior knowledge besides basic Perl
18:05 sri maybe aim for something one can read right after learning perl and intermediate perl :)
18:06 sri hmm, that would actually be pretty cool for getting new people into perl
18:06 sri tempire_: DO IT!!!

19:13 buu sri: Learning Perl Through The Power of Mojo?
19:20 tempire_ I used to think a CS degree was useless before I started the coursework.  Now I see I was the clueless one.
19:21 Mike-PerlRecruiter_ joined #mojo
19:21 tempire_ Though it's not the degree, but the knowledge.
19:22 tempire_ With khan and coursera and udacity, I'd say the time of CS degrees is in the past.
19:24 tempire_ I agree that it's not necessary, but it's another level...assuming you absorb and use the material.
19:25 sri the fact that you have to keep learning for the rest of your cs career also dimishes the value of a degree quite a bit
19:25 tempire_ Truth.
19:25 tempire_ For some reason, I know a lot of people who completed the degree and never retained it.
19:25 tempire_ Now that is pointless.
19:26 tempire_ (retained the knowledge)
19:28 tempire_ Might be interesting to lead into web dev using asynchronous concepts.
19:29 sri no u!
19:29 sri keep async stuff for the last chapter :)
19:30 tempire why?  If it can make things easier, why not start them on that concept early?
19:30 sri can it?
19:30 purl NO!  IT CAN'T!
19:30 sri \o/
19:30 tempire That's the question.  I'm convinced it can.  Just haven't figured it out yet.
19:31 sri personally, i wish someone taught me web dev from the http protocol upwards
19:31 tempire To what depth of the protocol?
19:32 sri no quirks, just start line, headers, body... and then how normal web dev stuff translates to it
19:32 sri query params very early
19:33 tempire Hmm.  So no black boxes from the beginning.
19:33 sri ye
19:34 tempire From basic perl to advanced web dev sounds much more interesting than going through a sample app
19:34 tempire And much more useful
19:34 * sri shrugs
19:35 tempire From my perspective, at least.
19:35 sri when i started web dev with perl the most important information was how to handle query params, that was enough to build basic apps with CGI.pm, everything else was secondary
19:35 tempire I have a couple of friends who would be good at programming, but it seems like an insurmountable challenge to them.
19:35 tempire That's what I started with.  Cgi101.com was amazing to me.
19:36 sri yea, such a chapter at the start would be awesome
19:37 * tempire remembers the days when
19:37 sri basically a bridge between "Learning Perl/Intermediate Perl" and real web development
19:39 sri learn you a mojo for great good
19:40 tempire I like the style of that and the erlang version, but I found them a bit too wordy.
19:41 tempire In practice, oreilly's real world Haskell was much more useful.
19:42 * tempire wonders if he can draw cartoons
19:43 sri contract some children to draw them :)
