06:58 Atog wich one you finally got?
07:03 sri plain old 13" retina macbook pro with 512gb ssd
07:06 Atog cool, you will be running osx?
07:07 sri os x and windows in bootcamp i think
07:08 sri depending on if i can get a windows license that activates...
07:08 Atog heh
07:10 Atog while i really see how good is osx it's not my cup of tea, i always end installing refind and dual booting linux
07:11 Atog my computer at work is a 2009 24" imac, lol

07:24 * sri wants crisp text on a retina screen
07:25 sri with proper scaling
07:33 mishanti1 Hasn't that been ok since right around '14?
07:34 sri has it? not been using a linux desktop for years
07:36 mishanti1 sri: The people I know using HiDPI seem to be happy at least. I know that there are some settings especially for the very opinionated pieces of software, but my impression is that it is mostly ok.
07:37 sri to be fair, even windows scaling looks not as good as os x
07:37 mishanti1 Is that due to them using bitmap scaling or something?
07:37 preaction from what i understand, osx has done vector rendering forever
07:38 sri could be
07:38 mishanti1 preaction: I think it is the same for windows.
07:39 mishanti1 But vector-rendering is sort of moot if you further down (or up? O_o ) in the pipeline try to do bitmap scaling.

09:37 nic Grinnz: M::P::SetUserGroup -- how would you feel about making the setting of supplemental groups optional?
09:38 nic It's giving me a bit of grief on a CentOS box, but if I disable the two supplemental checks, all is well
09:39 nic Personally I don't care at all about them
09:41 nic eg   ->plugin(SetUserGroup => {user => $user, group => $group, supplemental => 0})    [supplemental defaults to 1]
09:47 sri the display is just as good as the 12", just bigger
09:55 sri quite a bit faster too
10:11 sri speakers are not as good

11:44 Jonis sri: I didn't know anyone actually used laptop speakers
11:54 marcus sri: That's the laptop I'm sporting now. It works pretty well
11:54 marcus I'm sad about apple not releasing the new mbps before I start a new job. :(
11:54 marcus #technolust
11:54 marcus Maybe I should just bring my old 15" mbp to work and delay buying a laptop there
12:12 vicash i am surprised that considering that most production code is run on linux, developers do not mirror their production environment in development.
12:13 vicash where i work, the developers run the same environment as production so that bugs can be caught early

12:17 sri starting to realize the 12" macbook is only a second class mac
12:18 sri on the pro you can install windows through bootcamp without a usb drive
12:18 sri guess they consider that a pro feature :o
12:19 sri marcus: i'd skip the first, the keyboard will be bad

12:26 marcus sri: I think the 12" is mostly meant for surfing facebook ;)
12:27 marcus sri: I guess there's something to say for battle-tested technology. fully speced 15" ain't so bad either
12:27 marcus even the current-gen
12:28 marcus sri: Why do you think the keyboard will suck, btw? I don't actually mind the low-profile keyboard on the 12" either
12:35 sri those new butterfly switches seem to break a lot
12:35 sri think apple needs a few more years to get them right
12:37 sri who knows, maybe they are fine with a higher profile in the next pro
12:38 sri 12" macbook is definitely not made for work, i'll stick with the pro
12:40 sri cheap windows 8 license from ebay worked, now i have a digital entitlement
12:45 sri funny thing, i think the 2012 macbook air had the nicest keyboard

18:38 ribasushi sri-- # at least put some passwords or something in the clipboard ahead of time
18:40 sri was gonna put a "buy more mojo stickers" ad in the clipboard, but it will just get overwritten with some gibberish the next time i hit the touchpad with my palm :S
18:41 sri these windows touchpad drivers suck
18:42 * ribasushi generally disables any "click events" from a touchpad - too much risk of misclick at the wrong time/place
18:42 sri see, this is one of the things os x gets very right
18:42 ribasushi just have >1 finger scrolls enabled
18:42 ribasushi oh how so?

18:42 ribasushi ( genuinely curious now )
18:42 sri dunno how exactly, but touchpads and os x just work
18:43 sri they do palm detection and stuff
18:44 sri you can just put your palms on the touchpad while typing, and nothing happens
18:45 sri i'm sure there's much more to it, because it just works
18:45 ribasushi can't comment - never held a mac ;)
18:48 haarg putty does have options to control what the various mouse buttons do
18:53 sri think windows will get a lot easier once ubuntu for windows rolls out with the august update
18:53 sri at least for me
18:54 genio It would be nice if they'd release a better terminal emulator though
18:54 genio that cmd.exe window pane is just... infuriating

23:17 sri wonder if the difference is even noticeable at this point
23:17 sri 12": 600/900 mb/s, 13": 1400/1400 mb/s
