03:52 buu Is there some way to replicate mojo's app->config functionality outside of instantiating an actual app?
03:54 stryx` joined #mojo
03:57 Grinnz yes, but you can also just make your functionality into mojo commands which will by their nature instantiate the app

10:02 sri yea, i was thinking about getting the new one, but i'm really worried about the keyboard
10:31 marcus I think my next laptop will be a dell xps 15"
10:31 marcus but I don't have to worry about it for a couple of years I guess.
10:38 karjala https://scontent.fath3-2.fna.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-9/14606386_10154611503688523_4865032484906388384_n.jpg?oh=2af855c1ea9fbe3b954180c28a282a45&oe=588ECC56
10:41 sri marcus: work game me a dell precision 5510, which is pretty much equal to the xps 15, and while the build quality is pretty great it also hase quite a few flaws
10:41 sri s/game/gave/
10:41 sri point in case!
10:41 marcus they gamed you?
10:41 sri the keyboard is worse than current apple keyboards
10:41 marcus that is sadness
10:42 sri not 12" macbook bad, but i will definitely get a mechanical external keyboard when i'm back home
10:51 aborazmeh joined #mojo
10:51 karjala marcus: is the xps 15" very compatible with ubuntu 16.04?
10:56 marcus karjala: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Dell_XPS_15 looks fairly ok
10:56 marcus (should be the same for ubuntu probably?)
10:57 marcus Having said that, almost everything works well on my macbook pro on linux.
10:57 marcus the webcam drivers are a bit buggy
10:58 tyldis A bit lower end, but my Asus UX305 works out of the box with Ubuntu without any issues. Been using it for over a year (13 inch).
10:58 tyldis Keyboard is not mechanical, but not too bad. Build quality is good.
11:02 marcus I have this mechanical keyboard at home http://www.banggood.com/APP-Control-Anne-PRO-Blue-Red-Switch-RGB-Bluetooth-Mechanical-Gaming-Keyboard-p-1064055.html?rmmds=search

11:53 jberger Then I recommend getting a Roost stand

13:50 bwf If I used this cookbook example (http://mojolicious.org/perldoc/Mojolicious/Guides/Cookbook#Streaming-request), left out content_length in the header and used write_chunk, would that be a way to do Transfer-Encoding: chunked?
14:21 jberger bwf: http://mojolicious.org/perldoc/Mojolicious/Guides/Rendering#Chunked-transfer-encoding
14:22 bwf Looking for a Mojo::UserAgent example of chunked transfer encoding
14:23 jberger you want the user agent to send a request as a chunked transfer?
14:24 bwf yeah
14:24 jberger do servers accept that?
14:24 jberger I mean, I guess if that's what you are trying to do then that's how I'd do that
14:24 jberger I have no idea if it will work :-P

16:47 tyldis And if you buy a headset with a lightning plug you can only use it with the iPhone, but not the Macbook?
16:49 tyldis Also, did it only have USB, meaning you cannot use the charging chord that comes with the phone to charge from the Macbook?
16:49 tyldis So much for the benefits of a walled garden, I guess

17:33 tyldis mishanti1: Seems cool, but I think docker solves our use-case and even goes further with also ensuring all underlaying libs are also in a consistent state
17:33 sri coolo: it's a really huge deal imo https://medium.com/charged-tech/apple-just-told-the-world-it-has-no-idea-who-the-mac-is-for-722a2438389b#.lal52lotq
17:34 sri there's a huge market now for desktop boxes targeted at developers and creative folks
17:34 sri microsoft might be able to take that away from apple if they play their cards right
17:35 sri brutal quote
17:35 sri “I think if you’re looking at a PC, why would you buy a PC anymore? No really, why would you buy one?” – Tim Cook, talking about the iPad Pro
17:36 mishanti1 tyldis: Yeah, I think if you go the docker-route then things might look different than it does for us here. Good input though. Maybe we can later try to do something for Perl using Docker as well. :)
17:37 mishanti1 tyldis: From the start this is _mostly_ for the users that need to be assured that they can have somewhere reliable to pull dists from when doing installs/deployments, and do not want to maintain their own infrastructure for that (and don't use pre-built images like you describe).

17:58 Grinnz sri: all of my video games? lol
17:58 sri the guy is completely out of touch with reality
17:59 sri and not in a good steve jobs kinda way
18:03 genio I'll refuse to buy a MBP again until the keyboard is useful again and the USB-C only mentality is over.
18:03 genio I'll regretfully by a machine from a different manufacturer
18:03 kaare joined #mojo
18:04 vicash the percentage of Apple MBP users that are not software developers is pretty high.
18:04 sri but what else is there at the moment?
18:05 sri microsoft surface book?
18:05 genio I'm holding out hope that my old-ass 2012 MBP will hold up until they come to their senses
18:05 vicash Lenovo Thinkpad and Dell XPS
18:06 sri have a dell, the keyboards are not good
18:06 genio I will cry if I have to buy another laptop with a crappy touch pad though
18:06 genio like a little baby!
18:06 vicash that's a fair statement. laptop  keyboards suck across the board pretty much..
18:07 vicash I have had a decent experience with Acer keyboards but mostly I work on a desktop so i don't really care..
18:07 Grinnz i refuse to buy a laptop again until... ever
18:07 vicash genio i have a 2011 MBAir and it is still running just fine with the latest macOS (fingers crossed)
18:08 Grinnz i had an asus with a terrible keyboard, and a samsung with a decent chiclet keyboard
18:08 genio you can live without a laptop?!
18:09 Grinnz i have no reason for one with my phone and irccloud
18:09 genio The microsoft surface thingies look nice
18:09 genio my phone is too small to IRC
18:09 Grinnz and i've never had a laptop which didn't cause me endless grief
18:09 Grinnz the samsung was the least grief, but it was an atom processor, wimpy little thing
18:09 Grinnz my phone is more powerful than that was
18:11 sri as a traveling programmer i need a good laptop :/
18:13 genio as a programmer who likes to work outside with the doggies at home and on the couch, and ... I need a laptop
18:13 mishanti1 I have been _super_ happy with my 2011 Thinkpad x201. That machine has drunk both coffee and tea served carelessly by fellow travelers. Still chooches like a champ.
18:14 mishanti1 When this eventually dies I will probably go for an Thinkpad X-series Carbon.
18:14 genio mishanti1: The nub thingy and the trackpad with the clunky buttons make me hate the Lenovo machines
18:15 Grinnz for programming away from my desktop or workstation, i still think i could make do with a tablet with a keyboard, the trouble is finding the keyboard
18:15 sri many linux people seem to like the nub thingy.... because touchpad drivers suck i suppose ;p
18:15 Grinnz i like the nub more than i like touchpads, which isn't saying much
18:15 mishanti1 genio: I have never liked using it myself. However: "the nub" has never been in the way for me while typing. It used (on previous models) to protrude a lot so you would bump into it, but thankfully they fixed that. Now it is pretty minimal.
18:16 Grinnz not just drivers but the touchpad annoys me conceptually
18:16 sri on the mac touchpads feel more like touchscreens on phones
18:16 genio I've never been a fan of the nub thingy at all.  The touchpad on non-macs makes me want to plugin a mouse. Mac touchpads make life livable on a laptop
18:17 mishanti1 sri: The drivers have seemed fine for these for quite a lot of years. However, I am not a gamer so my demands to a trackpad is minimal.
18:17 mishanti1 I really don't use the mouse that much at all...
18:17 bwf I have a system76 laptop with bluetooth mouse because the touch pad sucks.
18:17 Grinnz yea ive always liked bluetooth mice
18:18 Grinnz i have a real nice one i got from costco for $27 some years ago
18:18 genio I've never heard of system76  *goes to look*
18:18 genio we don't have costco here :(
18:18 Grinnz well, amazon probably has similar options :P
18:20 genio system76 ... nope.
18:20 sri next problem is hidpi support in linux... it's still really bad
18:21 Grinnz not bluetooth, i guess https://www.amazon.com/Logitech-Anywhere-Mobile-Mouse-Wireless/dp/B0082D5660
18:22 Grinnz thats not th eone i have, but the darkfield laser is the nice part, even works on glass surfaces
18:23 genio Acer seems to have some nice looking machines.  swift7 for instance
18:29 jberger I got a zareason a while back
18:29 jberger I pulled it out today because there was a chance I needed a laptop I could leave at the office over the weekend
18:29 jberger oh man, I can't hardly use it anymore
18:30 jberger the keyboard is horrific and the screen is bad
18:30 jberger I guess I'm glad I have a backup lappy just in case
18:30 jberger but wow
18:31 genio I don't have a tablet and there's no way I could work on my phone.  I don't know how you guys do it
18:31 sri genio: btw. the trackpad on the dell is really really good
18:32 sri at least with windows
18:32 genio sri: Which one?
18:32 stryx` joined #mojo
18:32 sri this is a precision 5510, but the xps have the same
18:32 preaction my tablet + keyboard is pretty nice for doing simple writing like blogs and docs and presentation notes
18:32 preaction and the macbook 12" is amazingly portable
18:33 genio ouch. a bit pricy.  Dell XPS 15 with a solid state drive is $1400 USD
18:33 sri on windows it even has palm detection when typing
18:35 genio I'd have to see how it stacks up against the Surface Book
18:35 genio usable laptops are _not_ cheap

19:06 vicash the nub is awesome once you get used to it.. it allows you to use a mouse without having to move your hand off the keyboard.. but yes, it requires some practice and works better if used on Windows
19:07 Grinnz the only thing I didnt like about the nub is it was a little straining on my index finger
19:08 Grinnz something more like the 3DS analog pad would be nicer, though it would be hard to do that without getting in the way of keys
