12:01 sri slow weekend, guess everybody is on vacation
12:03 sri at the off chance that someone with devops background is here, how important are .socket files for systemd these days?
12:03 sri important enough for our daemons to get a ?fd=3 listen option?

13:21 nic http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-40302410  Thank crunchie we chose spaces
13:27 pink_mist speaking of systemd, https://twitter.com/diodesign/status/881297275070234624
13:28 jberger I'm starting to think we shouldn't be encouraging systemd in our docs
13:29 jberger It's hard because for some unknown reason distros are moving to it so I guess we should document its usage ...
13:29 jberger But argh I wish distros would stop this tide of insanity
13:30 pink_mist also, that's not a bug
13:30 jberger BTW if you read that thread, its worse than it originally seems
13:30 jberger pink_mist?
13:30 purl well, pink_mist is absolutely correct
13:30 pink_mist thanks purl <3
13:31 pink_mist jberger: "labels => not-a-bug"
13:31 jberger It runs any unit file with an incorrect username as root
13:32 jberger Oh right, poettering CONSIDERS it not a bug
13:32 jberger This is exactly my concern
13:32 leont_ Yeah, that's very Poettering :-/
13:32 jberger Your init system needs to fail safe, and more importantly the designer needs to know that
13:33 jberger Repeatedly he's shown that that isn't true
13:33 jberger Why do distros persist in pushing this science experiment into production?
13:34 pink_mist my distro of choice doesn't, thankfully
13:34 pink_mist slackware <3
13:34 sri it's not about encouraging, systemd has won, we can only make the best of it
13:35 jberger Indeed
13:36 jberger And yet I can't help but think that the more the documentation of things goes to systemd specific  the harder it gets to turn the tide
13:36 jberger But maybe you're right, the tide can't be turned ... And we are stuck with this onslaught of stupid decisions
13:47 leont_ It has won mainly because the desktop environments pushed for it, AFAIK
13:58 jabberwok i like science experi..... what's that sound?  EVERYBODY RUN

15:44 sri more like desktop environment... gnome appears to have won there
15:46 Grinnz as a fedora user i'm annoyed as anyone else about that... I pushed for a change of default desktop back when gnome 3 was newer and everyone hated it but it's too entrenched in redhat
15:46 Grinnz everyone just said "default desktop doesn't matter" even though 90% of people downloading fedora download the workstation spin thats displayed prominently
15:47 Grinnz and dont even know theres alternatives
15:47 leont_ gnome 3 can be quite nice, if your computer isn't too old and you've installed a bunch plugins
15:48 Grinnz reliance on plugins is exactly part of the problem, they break with every major version
15:48 leont_ Whoever decided that notifications should be hidden by default clearly insane
15:48 Grinnz they've demonstrated they have no idea what use case notifications are for

19:20 sri judging by the reactions i assume .socket files are not important at all ;p
19:35 leont_ Or maybe people just don't know what they do. I don't.
19:35 leont_ (Well, looking it up now)
20:22 karjala_ joined #mojo
21:04 sri yea, i guess most people don't know
21:04 sri to me they don't seem that important
21:05 sri mostly just another way to bind to a privileged port and pass it on to a process running with little privileges
21:06 sri socket is passed along as file descriptor 3 to the process

22:32 jberger that's an interesting mechanism, is any software setup to server via fd 3?
22:36 sri it's not uncommon, similar mechanism is used by Server::Starter and the like for zero downtime setups
22:36 sri we could support it with like one line of code i suppose
22:37 sri just need to pass the ?fd=3 from Mojo::Server::Daemon to Mojo::IOLoop::Server, which already knows how to open file descriptors
23:15 karjala_ jberger, in your YAPC talk, you mentioned 3 message brokers: postgres, redis, and one other which i didn't understand... which was it?
