18:20 plicease There is a platypus package in debian sid
18:20 plicease https://packages.debian.org/sid/libffi-platypus-perl
18:32 jberger nice!
18:59 plicease i noticed because they sent me a spelling patch.
18:59 plicease This seems always to be the way that I find out :P
19:03 preaction they were in freenode#perl a few weeks back asking for advice on what to use for dealing with external libraries, and got pointed to FFI::Platypus
19:10 plicease do you know for what application?
19:10 plicease interesting.
19:23 mohawk wonder if they'll add a nativecall package too
19:23 mohawk i fear not ;-)
19:24 preaction i did point them at NativeCall as well
19:25 preaction and no, i don't know what they're using it for
19:31 jberger so many people tell me I'm wrong about this, but I hate how the platform packagers are so removed from the developers
19:38 preaction why?
19:43 jberger because I don't like the fact that they monkey with **and potentially modify** code I have written and don't tell me about it
19:44 jberger it is also probably old
19:44 jberger which they claim is to provide stability but is more likely to allow fixed bugs to live longer than they should have
19:45 jberger I the author am a better resource into the quality/stability of the code than a 3rd party packager
19:45 jberger and yet they purport to be without engaging us
19:47 mohawk yeah
19:47 preaction i would consider that the packager's dilemma: they're going to be blamed for problems they can't fix, and you're going to be blamed for problems you can't fix
19:47 plicease I agree that they are in a tough spot, some developers I imagine would be hard to deal with.
19:48 plicease on the other hand I like to think that I am the sort of developer that could help if I knew about issues
19:52 plicease PkgConfig.pm is tricky to package sometimes because of some interesting decisions by the original author,
19:53 plicease but if vendors would spend a little time working with me things turn out better :)
19:53 plicease regardless if Platypus makes it to production version of debian I will be happy.
20:05 ashevchuk joined #native
20:09 plicease mohawk: I was going to do a mini-NativeCall talk at dc.pm in July.
20:10 plicease but I am on vacation at the moment and may have to push it to August for lack of time to prepare
21:10 mohawk wow, cool
21:11 mohawk i think it's a subject that deserves doing properly :-)
21:11 mohawk i remember how inspirational i found your original Platypus talk
21:11 mohawk i need to make NC have proper grown-up tests that pass on all platforms at some point
21:12 mohawk i will totally be stealing how to do that from FFI::P
21:12 jberger plicease made a talk that inspired me once, that's how he got the job of driving AB :-P
21:12 jberger rightly criticizing me for its maintenance
21:12 mohawk jberger, was that the one you linked me to, that's the one i was referring to?
21:13 jberger it was long before Platypus
21:13 mohawk we need to make a new h2ph that will generate an FFI::P (or even better, NC - #biased) .pm file
21:13 jberger that'd be cool
21:13 mohawk i thought graham being in AB was my fault
21:14 mohawk i could call it h2nc
21:14 jberger I'd say it was that talk, I don't know who actually contacted him
21:14 * mohawk coughs discreetly
21:14 jberger if it was you then great
21:14 jberger I'm just happy he's here
21:14 mohawk it has turned out exceptionally well
21:15 mohawk i too am exceedingly happy that you (jberger) brought him in
21:15 * jberger happy dances
