19:54 eiro hello
19:54 zarah saluton eiro
19:54 masak eiro: oh hai :)
19:54 eiro hey masak :-)
19:54 masak eiro: that's zarah, our local bot.
19:55 eiro i just read your answer and jumped here
19:55 eiro perl6 one ?
19:55 masak written in POE, but might some day be ported to Perl 6.
19:56 masak she's a smart girl.
19:56 masak zarah: you're a smart girl.
19:56 zarah masak: But we _can't_ go on meeting like this! Over.
19:56 masak :)
19:57 eiro a point is that: i don't want to reinvent the wheel: every ILS are based on old formats and my attempt is to use FRBR as base. FRBR is well documented but only exists on the paper. I want it to be real :)
19:57 masak ok.
19:57 masak well, there's no need to reinvent wheels that are known to work. :)
19:58 masak we build Web.pm on known-to-work technologies, for example.
19:58 eiro sure ... that's the case: koha works well :)
19:58 masak and November is a very ordinary wiki, thus far.
19:58 masak eiro: so why rewrite it?
19:59 eiro first because it's more and more hard to hack: koha works well but is based on a poor design and very bad coding styles
20:00 eiro second because there is no ILS that can be FRBR ready for the moment!
20:00 eiro :)
20:02 masak ah. so whereas koha works well, it might prove to be a dead end for some needed developments.
20:02 masak sounds a bit like Perl 5 actually.
20:04 eiro good catch! it's like perl5 :)
20:04 eiro (i never noticed before)
20:05 PerlJam what are ILS and FRBR?
20:05 masak Integrated Library System, right?
20:05 masak I had to look it up too.
20:05 eiro http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Integrated_library_system
20:05 zarah eiro's link is also http://tinyurl.com/s9v5v
20:05 PerlJam and then FRBR makes sense now I guess.
20:06 PerlJam (based on my googling)
20:06 masak what is it?
20:06 PerlJam functional requirements for bibliographic reference
20:07 eiro FRBR describe what to store and how to store informations about intellectual contents
20:07 eiro and items you can find in your library
20:07 eiro that curent format is MARC ... it comes with:
20:08 eiro - limitations from stoneage
20:08 masak FRBR sounds like a good fit for a Perl 6 module.
20:08 eiro - stupid serialisation system
20:08 eiro - lot of local dialects
20:09 eiro i mean : it's hell to import/export informations through ILSs
20:10 eiro masak, that's my goal: provide UML diagram of FRBR objects
20:10 eiro implement it in perl6
20:11 eiro some coworkers will try the same in python .... i don't want python to enter into the koha mindshare
20:11 PerlJam If lathos' work with SQLite is exposed through rakudo, it sounds like you can build a simple ILS fairly easily.  :)
20:11 masak I wish you the best of luck on your quest.
20:11 eiro but we have to deal with poor skilled develppers and i have to admit that perl5 is too hard
20:12 eiro perl6 comes here to fight python
20:12 masak I would recommend getting something super-simple to run fairly soon, and then build from that.
20:12 masak I don't care much for language wars.
20:12 eiro i do :)
20:13 PerlJam Hmm.  KohaCon is in pmichaud's town in a few days.
20:14 eiro oh ... then it would be cool to meet him
20:15 eiro (but i don't go there :( a coworker does)
20:15 eiro (the python's one) ...
20:15 PerlJam eiro: except he'll be at NPW at that time.
20:15 masak ok, I'm heading offlinewards now. want to get some slidework done for NPW.
20:15 eiro damnit !
20:16 masak eiro: nice to see you here on #november-wiki. hope to hear more about your ILS plans.
20:16 * masak pulls plug
20:17 eiro :-)
