18:05 rjbs rafl: HELLO
18:05 rafl hi!
18:05 rjbs Dom: And hello to you, too, if you're here. ;)
18:05 Dom hi
18:06 rjbs rafl: So, how's the 5.17-boat going?
18:06 rafl pretty good
18:06 rafl i'm pretty much done up to the final testing and pushing the release branch so far
18:06 rjbs yay!
18:06 rafl gonna make sure everything is alright during the day
18:07 rafl and then release as soon as it's not the 19th anymore
18:08 rjbs Great.  You'll be making the first release with lexical subs!
18:08 rjbs Scary!
18:08 rafl i know, right?!
18:08 rjbs but mostly for me, because once you've gotten it released, you can wander off :-)
18:09 rafl i hope no one will be mad that i made the cut off for changes to 17.4 about a day early
18:09 * rjbs wishes he'd sorted out the warnings categories before tomorrow, but there's be another 5.17 next month.
18:09 rjbs I doubt it.  The monthly releases are a real boon for that kind of decision.
18:09 rafl mm
18:09 rjbs Well, I've been building blead a lot, lately, and I think I'd notice anything horrible.  And I haven't.  So, I'm feeling pretty good about it.
18:09 rjbs Anything you need from me?
18:10 rafl the only thing i'm unsure about so far is syncing $VERSIONs for the two corelist modules
18:10 rafl haven't heard back from bingos about it yet
18:10 rafl but then again i've only asked earlier today
18:10 rafl i think i'll just do it and note it in the RMG
18:11 rjbs The two .pms are not version-synced?
18:11 rafl for him to amend or revert it if i was wrong
18:11 Dom Oh, I'm not sure whether I'm sure about Module::CoreList for 5.14, come to think of it.
18:11 rafl not automatically anyway
18:11 rafl not until we're releasing with dzil :)
18:11 rjbs rafl: ;)  Okay.  Syncing them seems like a good idea, but I know it's a bit of a religious question.
18:11 rjbs Dom: Sure in what way?
18:12 * Dom quickly reviews the rmg. Maybe it is clear after all.
18:12 rafl rjbs: i doubt bingos will hate me for the decision that he's also free to overrule if he feels differently
18:12 Dom I think the point is that there Module::CoreList doesn't itself branch
18:12 Dom s/there //
18:12 rjbs Dom: The process has changed a bit since 5.14, and the helper in blead is for the new format for saving stuff.  I'm not sure if it's been backported.
18:13 rjbs Since it's been so long since 5.14.2, it's diverged a good bit, and I think you have two options:
18:13 rjbs (a) backport Module-CoreList from blead along with the update tool or (b) fork Module-CoreList from maint-5.14 with only the 5.14.x updates
18:14 Dom right.
18:14 rafl if i was to make that maint release, i'd probably have a ${current}_01 release of CoreList built with corelist.pl from maint
18:14 rjbs I'd do whatever is easier, were I you, and I'd lean toward (b).
18:14 rjbs Yeah.
18:14 rafl and just work on importing the actual data into the blead corelist
18:15 rjbs this could easily be the last 5.14, so keeping its tooling up to date isn't much of a win
18:16 rjbs Dom: How is the rest of maint-5.14 going?
18:16 Dom pretty good, I think I'm most of the way there. I do have a couple of questions/comments
18:17 Dom In terms of testing, there is quite a lot of smoke, but I haven't yet found any test failure which isn't also in 5.14.2
18:18 Dom I'm guessing that means that none of that smoke counts as a blocker (even if fixes would be valid candidates)
18:19 rjbs I think that's true, although it would be good to identify the failures and see if we have fixes.
18:19 Dom mmm.
18:20 Dom In terms of timings, I had in mind releasing RC1 as soon as this Saturday.
18:21 rjbs That would be just fine by me!
18:21 Dom Given the relatively low amount of interest, it might be worth leaving more than the standard one week period between RC1 and RC2 (or final)
18:21 Dom maybe two?
18:22 rjbs Not a bad idea, and fine with me, too!
18:22 rjbs Nobody is clamoring for it, and if you aren't feeling like you need to just get it over with, no need to rush. :)
18:23 Dom well: there is one thing which could persuade release in a timely fashion which is the potential to get 5.14.3 itself into the currently frozen Debian. But I was trying to not connect them too strongly in my mind as I don't know what the Debian release team would say about that
18:23 Dom s/persuade/persuade me/
18:23 rjbs :)
18:24 Dom In terms of other things: I still have on my TODO getting a pumpkin bit (and also some search.cpan.org magic) but I know we talked about you doing that to. What's needed there?
18:24 rjbs Well, I will get you build reports on all my available OSes as soon as there's an RC at any rate.
18:24 rjbs I think I took care of that, but I'll double check.
18:24 rafl Dom: being a debian developer and having tried to get stuff in after a freeze before, i say chances are slim, no matter when you release
18:25 rafl unless of course the new release fixes any existing RC bugs
18:25 rjbs Dom: I don't see replies to mails asking for those bits, so I'll take care of it
18:25 Dom rafl: well, my plan is to enumerate what real new changes are included; quite a bit of the churn is stuff already in Debian. But yes, I agree.
18:26 rjbs Dom: Wait, do you have a PAUSE id?
18:26 Dom rafl: I'm trying at the moment with http://lists.alioth.debian.org/pipermail/pkg-request-tracker-maintainers/2012-September/003334.html
18:26 Dom rjbs: yes, I am DOM
18:26 rjbs hm. why wouldn't search find you?
18:26 rjbs Oh.  You're LAST on http://search.cpan.org/search?query=Hargreaves&mode=all
18:28 rjbs rafl: No progress was made on Test-Harness, TExt-Balanced, or Module-PLuggable, right?
18:29 rafl i've gotten a lot of modules back into sync, but not those, no.
18:30 Dom for completeness: https://rt.perl.org/rt3/Ticket/Display.html?id=114730 currently has a few things hanging off it, but they aren't really "Depends on". I'll make a perl 5.14.4 meta-ticket and move those across at some point.
18:32 rjbs Great. :)
18:34 rjbs Okay.  It sounds like 5.17 and 5.14 are both in good hands and like we'll see some product in the next few days (and hopefully tomorrow for 5.17!)
18:34 rjbs The October release manager had to withdraw, so unless someone steps up (and you two are welcome, of course!) then I will be doing the October release.
18:34 rjbs rafl: ...so don't leave me any big messes. :-D
18:36 * rafl checks his schedule
18:36 rafl hrm. that's the last day of YAPC::Brasil
18:37 rafl i wonder if i could do the release in 20 or 40 minutes :)
18:37 rjbs If you prepared it beforehand, for sure.
18:37 Dom :)
18:37 rafl let me think about it for a few days. i might very well be up for it if no other volunteer shows up
18:37 rjbs Okay!
18:37 rjbs You'd make history. ;)
18:38 rafl would it be the first perl released from south america?
18:38 rjbs I think so.
18:38 rjbs not from the southern hemisphere, though
18:38 rafl cool
18:41 Dom rjbs: I ask as a matter of interest, but also in case there are any subtle cross-overs - how is 5.16?
18:42 rjbs 5.16.1 went without a hitch;  I need to make another call for 5.16.2 patches and see if I've missed any
18:42 rjbs but so far, it's quite untroublesome!
18:42 Dom excellent!
18:43 rjbs Okay, well, if that's that, then that's that!
18:43 rjbs I look forward to installing both your releases soon.
18:44 Dom I look forward with... trepidation
18:44 rafl thanks for your time
18:45 Dom yes, that.
18:54 rjbs (:
