13:39 Abigail Hellow.
13:39 rjbs Due to cancelation of other things, Abigail and I will now open discussion on the next release!
13:39 Abigail Hello even.
13:39 Topic for #onionsketch is now The State of the Onion | 5.21.2 due on July 20th
13:39 rjbs I will attempt to inspire you to great heights by letting you know that 5.21.2 is due on my birthday.
13:40 Abigail I guess changes are slim someone will show up in 2 hours with some really important topics to talk about ;-)
13:40 rjbs And if they do, there's always email!
13:40 rjbs Okay, I do not expect this will take very long.  I have found my general notes.
13:40 Abigail Whee! Did you publish any books I can then use for quotes? ;-)
13:41 rjbs Ha!  No, maybe next year. :)
13:41 rjbs This is not your first release!  Good.
13:41 rjbs That means you should be all set for the various permissions.
13:41 Abigail Indeed, it'll be my third.
13:41 rjbs Smoke reports were, last I checked, looking pretty good.
13:41 * Abigail nods.
13:42 rjbs I see some bad reports from netbsd and solaris, but netbsd is a long-time problem smoker.  Solaris, I'll have a look at.
13:42 rjbs Some fixes were recently applied for known Solaris build problems, include -Dusedtrace, so I'm looking forward to seeing that work out of the box.
13:42 rjbs (For quite a while, you've had to "make dtrace.h" or something by hand because the deps were not working.)
13:43 rjbs I don't /think/ we have any interesting new breakage expected.  Dave m. committed the deprecation of \C this week.
13:43 Abigail I saw that message on p5p.
13:43 rjbs I'm guessing that in a few days, a ticket will show up form Andreas re: BBC
13:43 rjbs I will also do a cpangrep to see who might need a ticket about it.
13:44 rjbs Apart from that, I don't remember any changes looming that are likely to cause consternation, CPAN problems, or black smoke.
13:44 Abigail I'll check whether perlrebackslash needs updating.
13:44 Abigail (Regarding the \C that is)
13:45 rjbs There may be some mailing list strife if/when I make a couple announcements in the next week or two.  [vague and ominous!]
13:45 Abigail Any dual lived modules that should be synced?
13:45 rjbs I wouldn't worry about syncing anything *in*.  BinGOs has been very methodical about getting that done.
13:45 rjbs I think we have a tool for finding upstream-blead stuff that lacks a CPAN release.
13:46 Abigail Ok.
13:46 rjbs It would be good to see the results of that again, and maybe to get it in the RMG, which I think it is *not*
13:46 rjbs For example, I have a note here that PathTools needs a release.
13:46 rjbs and Storable did, btu crab just did that a day or two ago (yay, crossed off)
13:46 Abigail I don't recall it being in the RMG, but last time I looked was last time I made a release.
13:46 rjbs right
13:47 rjbs I don't have any notes form last time, but... finding...
13:47 rjbs https://rt.perl.org/Ticket/Display.html?id=122145
13:47 rjbs that's the "tickets blocking 5.21.2"
13:48 rjbs they're not exactly blockers, but... "tickets to keep track of"
13:48 rjbs and those which aren't closed before 5.21.2 should get ported over to a new 5.21.3 ticket
13:48 * Abigail nods.
13:48 rjbs I think I hav a patch to send schmorp for the Guard failure
13:48 rjbs (we removed objcount, which he was using)
13:49 rjbs and #122121 is actually sort of dead, but don't close it *yet*
13:49 rjbs Those are things broken when 'use encoding' was made to fail.
13:49 rjbs I want to start talking to those authors to figure out whether they actually need encoding.pm
13:50 rjbs So far, my feeling is that nobody needs it.  The big question is whether it is a hardship to declare that Perl source must be Latin-1 or UTF-8 and nothing else.
13:50 rjbs (Well, or UTF-16, but the less said about that the better.)
13:50 rjbs as for the other ones, have a look sometime, see if they just need an email sent, et.c
13:50 rjbs Apart from that... I don't think there's much to say.  It should be a pretty painless month, I think, and you know the ropes.
13:51 Abigail I've never heard anyone using anything other than Latin-1 or UTF-8, but that doesn't say much. Who knows what they use (or want to use) in Asia.
13:51 rjbs Yeah, the primary use cases we see are:
13:51 Abigail Yes, and I know your email address ;-)
13:51 rjbs * use encoding 'utf-8' (where use utf8 woudl probably do)
13:52 rjbs * use encoding 'Big5'; # or other Asian encoding
13:52 rjbs * use encoding 'Latin-1'; # what?
13:52 rjbs unfortunately use encoding ALSO applies a binmode to stdin/stdout
13:52 rjbs so there may be invisible reasons and action at a distance
13:52 rjbs Okay.  Then we have set the next date/time as...
13:53 rjbs July 18th, Friday, 13:00 NYC / 19:00 AMS
13:53 rjbs iirc
13:53 rjbs (the only question there is the time difference to .nl)
13:53 Abigail Yes. That should work for me.
13:53 Abigail No.
13:54 rjbs No?
13:54 Abigail It's generally 6 hours with the Netherlands, except around the time we switch DST on/off, as the USA and Europe aren't synced about that.
13:54 rjbs Right, btu we're in the middle of summer, so should match, I hope. :)
13:54 Abigail No, as in "No, there's no time difference other than the 6 hours you mentioned"
13:54 rjbs great
13:54 rjbs Okay.  In that case, I will talk to you in 13 days!  And probably between!
13:55 Abigail Ok, have a nice day!
13:55 rjbs enjoy the cyclingwatching
13:55 * rjbs &
