18:07 rjbs #onionsketch has been delayed to 15:00 due to scheduling conflict with me.

19:01 rjbs Hello and good afternoon!
19:01 rjbs Sorry for the delay.  We got back *almost* on time, but I'm glad I wasn't rushed.
19:01 steveh Hi. Hope you had a good long lunch?
19:01 rjbs Yes, although that thing they served me was never gazpacho!
19:01 rjbs nice tembleque, though
19:02 rjbs So, once again we meet with two releases in flight!  This time, though one is mine.
19:02 steveh Yes, indeed!
19:02 rjbs 5.21.4 has been looking okay from here, although there sure is a LOT of churn in the floats!
19:02 steveh Sure is, and now quadmath too!...
19:02 rjbs Curious to see:
19:02 rjbs a) how it goes
19:02 rjbs b) what people use it for :)
19:03 steveh I've almost got long doubles working on MinGW, but not quite. It'll have to wait until post 5.21.4
19:03 steveh At least the gcc build is fixed :-)
19:03 rjbs Heh.
19:03 steveh And VC6 is passing all tests again too thanks to jhi && bulk88
19:04 rjbs Yes, that was quite an afternoon to watch.
19:04 rjbs Apart from "all that," it looks like mostly lots of bug fixing.  Interesting bugs, too.
19:04 rjbs But I don't recall anything off hand that has looked scary to me.  Think there's anything we need to be afeared of?
19:04 steveh I don't think so. The smokes aren't looking too bad.
19:05 steveh I saw some GLOBAL STRUCT problem the other day, but I think jhi has fixed it now.
19:05 steveh There's persistent noise from io-socket-ip on Win32
19:05 rjbs Cool.  And you have not exhausted your epigraph queue? :)
19:05 rjbs Yeah.  I saw that a ticket had been filed with Paul.
19:06 steveh Yes, so hopefully we can get that fixed and quieten it down soon
19:06 steveh And no, plenty of potential epigraphs left ;-)
19:06 rjbs ("Sorry, everyone, perl 5 development has been frozen until we have better ideas for epigraphs.")
19:07 steveh Haha. There's more than enough writing in the world for that to never have to happen.
19:07 rjbs Okay, cool.  You're an old hand at this, and I think we have no major issues on deck, so great.
19:07 rjbs 5.18.3-RC1 is good, I think.
19:07 rjbs I was very briefly panicked when I saw it got pushed to, but the change was an obvious and safe improvement.
19:07 rjbs So phew. :)
19:08 steveh Yes.
19:08 steveh I saw a noisy smoke very recently though...
19:08 rjbs That release has been languishing since June, so I'll be glad to have it out.  It should make Regexp::Grammars work properly again and finally on 5.18
19:08 steveh This one: http://www.nntp.perl.org/group/perl.daily-build.reports/2014/09/msg167518.html
19:08 steveh g++ build problem perhaps?
19:08 rjbs yow; must've accidentally deleted that unread
19:09 rjbs yeah, maybe, thanks
19:09 rjbs I'll check it out
19:09 steveh Yeah, wouldn't want it going out like that!
19:09 rjbs I expect 5.18.3 to be the final release of 5.18, although of course it needn't be.
19:09 rjbs so I'm hoping it's no more problematic than 5.18.2 was :)
19:10 steveh Sounds good. I was thinking Jan should be a reasonable time for 5.20.2?
19:10 rjbs I'm going with your precedent:  I am not going to update the Data::Dumper it ships.
19:10 rjbs Yes, that sounds good to me.
19:10 * rjbs consults perlhist
19:11 steveh I saw there was some discussion about the DD fix, so leaving it to CPAN is probably best
19:11 rjbs Both 5.16 and 5.18 were May/August for .0/.1.  Nice that 5.20 has been able to take more time.  And like Karl said, I think you set a high bar! :)
19:12 rjbs but yeah, January sounds about right
19:12 rjbs hopefully much less work, too :)
19:12 steveh Thanks. Let's hope I can keep it up for .2 :-)
19:12 rjbs Yeah, the discussion on DD seemed likely to lead to some tweak to the tweak.
19:13 rjbs Also, the ticket on the perl-security group queue — which may become public sometime soon — dicusses some related changes we may want to make.
19:14 rjbs (Are you on that list?  You should be.)
19:14 rjbs You are, good.
19:14 rjbs Okay.  Sounds like we're both cruising toward hopefully easy releases.  Yay.
19:15 rjbs Oh, and Module::CoreList.  Ugh.
19:15 steveh Yeah... Well, I think that's all in order now isn't it?
19:15 rjbs I'd like to figure out a way to make it easier to update/maintain/backport.
19:15 rjbs but yeah, I think it's largely in hand
19:16 rjbs What would be nice, I think, is to have a directory of per-version datafiles that we compile into the delta structure, so they diff/edit easily.
19:16 rjbs I'll poke at that in my head, at least.
19:16 rjbs For now: mischief managed.
19:16 rjbs And I think that's all the mischief we have to think about.  Right?  Anything else?
19:16 steveh It's nothing more than a little tedious right now, I think
19:16 steveh But yes, removing some tedium wouldn't be a bad thing!
19:18 rjbs Yeah.  It's one of the few bits that I "notice" doing :)
19:18 rjbs Okay.  I will now go back to work!  Good luck with your release tomorrow!  Next up is Abigail for October.
19:18 steveh The other is filling in descriptions of changes in the "updated modules" list
19:19 rjbs yeah
19:19 steveh That would also be nice to automate somehow, but relies on the cpan releases having suitable Changes files in them
19:19 rjbs and we don't want to end up like the iTunes app store
19:19 rjbs "Bug fixes and improvements."
19:20 steveh Ok, well there's some things to consider for the future. For now I'm doing it by hand...
19:21 steveh I'm sure tomorrow will go fine. Good luck with 5.18.3!
19:22 rjbs Thanks!
