19:01 rjbs Oops, I was looking for shay.
19:01 rjbs steveh: Hi!
19:01 steveh Hello. Yes, it's steveh :-)
19:01 rjbs I don't know why I thought otherwise.  It's been a long day!
19:01 rjbs I am excited for 5.21.10.  How's it going?
19:02 steveh Pretty good, despite some distractions this week.
19:02 steveh I seem to have got through quite a few things
19:03 steveh A problem with Porting/corelist is now fixed, thanks to Matthew Horsfall :-)
19:03 steveh I've looked at upgrading CPAN modules:
19:03 rjbs I saw that, and was happy to.
19:04 steveh CPAN.pm is upgraded. Text::ParseWords is upgraded; only an EOL difference remains, which I've sent upstream. parent also has EOL issues, so I'm not upgrading that since there are no code changes
19:04 steveh Encode is upgraded. It lost khw's EBCDIC change and some new tests along the way, though, but I think  they can wait.
19:04 rjbs Heh.  Like, CPAN has dos and blead has unix?
19:04 steveh The good news is there are no _01 versions :-)
19:05 rjbs What can you tell me about the state of encoding.pm ?
19:05 steveh Yes, DOL EOLs on CPAN, but everything in blead is UNIX
19:05 steveh encoding.pm is fully in sync with the CPAN Encode
19:07 steveh This is the commit that got left out of the Encode update after a little confusion with $VERSION bumps:
19:07 steveh https://github.com/dankogai/p5-encode/commit/afcba14d20549efcf80323ccf67c4fa36f5c16be
19:07 steveh But that wasn't in blead anyway: The patch was only sent upstream, so I'm assuming we're ok without it.
19:07 rjbs huh, I didn't realize it did deprecation the way it does; okay
19:07 rjbs look forward to figuring out how we finally excise it
19:08 rjbs I see.
19:08 rjbs Okay!
19:08 rjbs Andof course "no _01 versions" is good to hear.
19:09 steveh The following are behind CPAN, but not "safe" to upgrade at this stage, I think: CPAN::Meta::Requirements, CPAN::Meta::YAML, Devel::PPPort, IO::Socket::IP, Pod::Checker, Pod::Simple, Pod::Usage, Term::Carp, Unicode::Collate
19:09 rjbs Okay.
19:09 steveh If anyone thinks otherwise then speak up, and I'll happily do the honours if they really are ok
19:09 rjbs I may or may not get the Carp::Heavy thing done before the 20th, but I'm okay with getting it in in 5.21.11.
19:09 steveh Ok.
19:10 steveh I had a look through the blockers list, but sadly only found one that could be closed already
19:10 rjbs I want to do one release with both that /and/ a fix to some tests on certain Win32 platforms.
19:10 rjbs Yes, I *need* to start ringing the blocker bell.  Maybe tomorrow.
19:10 rjbs Hm.  Tomorrow I have a root canal.  Maybe Friday. :)
19:11 steveh Some may not be blockers, of course, but I didn't feel sure enough about any myself to go removing them
19:11 steveh It is quite a long list at the moment :-/
19:11 rjbs Right.
19:11 rjbs Yeah, it usually shrinks quickly.
19:12 steveh I just saw that DaveM looked at a security fix, which seems not to be CVE-worthy and the fix will hopefully go in tomorrow
19:12 rjbs Oh, look at that, 8 new security mails...
19:12 rjbs ah, four (x2)
19:12 rjbs Okay, cool.  Will read those in a bit.
19:12 rjbs Smokes have looked okay to me.  You see any problems?
19:12 steveh One bug fix that we've missed, though, is #116639 -- again! We've missed it before :-(
19:13 steveh Yves pointed out that it's your call whether to make an exception for it. Might be owrth considering?
19:13 rjbs I had that on my list, but have been skipping it for a reason.  Let me look right now.
19:14 steveh There was also discussionon that ticket of using an improved release process to avoid freezing blead in future -- also surely worth considering seriously to avoid such issues again?
19:14 rjbs We've had that discussion a number of times, and not having it again was largely the reason that ticket was not getting the attention it needed from me.
19:14 rjbs and then the thread ended badly
19:14 steveh I guess it's too late for this release(?), but would be nice to do for 5.24.
19:15 rjbs I am unconvinced that we have the resources for usefully having an open general-purpose "blead" while the frozen bleed is still in progress.
19:16 rjbs If someone wants to propose a specific set of changes to how things work, and to show that it would work, okay.  My starting position is "unconvinced."  Also, we already have branches.  Putting things during the code freeze into branches to apply at 5.odd.0 is easy, which colors my feelings on the need for blead to remian open.
19:17 * rjbs is rereading the ticket itself.
19:17 steveh Hmm. I've always felt that releasing from a branch rather than trunk is a better plan. Maybe because that's what I've always done with monthly and maint releases :-)
19:18 rjbs Well, I do release from a branch.
19:18 rjbs I make rjbs/release-5.22 (for example) as we get down to the final days.
19:18 rjbs but the question is: what is the value of making that the release branch /for three months/ while blead becomes 5.23.0?
19:19 rjbs do the smokers now smoke both?  and with what priority? and does BBC slow down?  and what else?
19:19 steveh I thought there was more talk than I see on that ticket. May need to revisit the archives too. Anyway, certainly worth consideration.
19:19 rjbs It's a significant change, and until I see something more comprehensive than "leave blead open," I am conservative.
19:19 steveh Yeah, smokers and BBC are an issue.
19:20 rjbs This ticket looks more complicated than I hoped.  I can't usefully review it While U Wait.
19:21 rjbs I think it will have to wait, though.  I don't mind at all flagging it /myself/ for patch application or author-nudging immediately after 5.23 opens.
19:21 steveh No problem, just thought I would highlight it in case you weren't aware
19:22 rjbs What else is on your release agenda?
19:22 rjbs I believe that for the last two releases, I heard that the "list of modified modules" section generator was busted.
19:22 rjbs Is that still the case?
19:22 rjbs (I appreciate the highlighting, thanks.)
19:22 steveh No, I tried that already and it works fine.
19:23 steveh After fixing corelist.pl, that is
19:23 rjbs Great to hear.  I'm going to need it soon. :-)
19:23 rjbs Ah, was that the issue?  Gosh.
19:24 steveh Possibly. Or maybe just not running it all before using the delta updater?
19:24 steveh It works now when done in the right order anyway :-)
19:24 rjbs Possibly.  I suppose I won't dig, because it won't help to find out. :)
19:24 rjbs Okay.  Other issues or things to cover?
19:25 steveh CPAN modules and bugs were my main things to do, and they're all done.
19:25 steveh So it's mostly just a matter of doing perldelta now
19:25 rjbs Great.  That's my next big task, too.
19:25 steveh And don't forget to keep an eye on http://analysis.cpantesters.org/beforemaintrelease
19:26 rjbs Largely:  (1) take my merged perldelta and sanitize it (2) start ringing the blocker bell.
19:26 rjbs I will not!  I was very pleased to have that put together.
19:26 rjbs "Don't have Andreas cluck his tongue at me" is high on my priorities! :)
19:26 steveh :-)
19:27 rjbs Okay.  I don't think I have anything else. I will...
19:27 rjbs I made myself a todo about getting BBC tickets into blockers.
19:27 rjbs I also thought we'd dealt with that.
19:28 steveh I think I'm about done too then. I look forward to getting 5.21.10 out and starting the real countdown to 5.22 :-)
19:28 rjbs Okay.  Well, I have no doubt that you will produce a nice 5.21.10.  Heck, maybe we can just renumber it as 5.22.0 in the end...
19:29 rjbs Yes, me too.
19:29 rjbs Thanks for your time!  I look forward to upgrading.
19:29 steveh Good luck then. If you need anything else from me before .10 then just give me a shout :-)
19:29 rjbs Wilco!
19:37 ether la lala
19:37 ether hey how'd I get +o in here
20:20 rjbs hah
