04:05 dantheman jvcleave:
04:06 jvcleave what up
04:06 dantheman recompiling now
04:06 jvcleave whats that?
04:07 dantheman the changes for the pi
04:08 jvcleave isn't it just going to break again tho once this goes through? https://github.com/raspberrypi/firmware/commit/fb156967a2f07ac03cda68cc8629816eba109b67
04:11 jvcleave ah - nevermind - I guess I have it backwards
04:12 dantheman lol yeah
04:13 dantheman I'm having to rebuild the whole project because of a name change
04:13 dantheman lol
04:13 dantheman thanks guys
04:13 dantheman gotta see what else change
04:15 jvcleave looks like some OMX stuff as well
04:15 dantheman jvcleave: yeah
04:15 dantheman at least we can see the source changes lol
04:15 jvcleave i guess I haven't updated firmware - going to try that and see if that breaks
04:16 dantheman oh it will
04:16 dantheman rpi-update
04:17 jvcleave does raspian ship with that? I am unclear of it's purpose anymore
04:17 jvcleave used to be that you used that to get the latest/greatest/etc
04:19 dantheman yeah
04:20 dantheman something I had to install with the camera module first step was rpi-update and its in the bring up guide because they changed the path to the headers on us the last time
04:20 dantheman remember
04:20 dantheman lol
04:20 dantheman whoops these belong over here…change them and not tell anyone
04:21 jvcleave i'm still going to try the fresh install and see if that works
04:22 dantheman kk
04:22 dantheman oh hey look
04:22 dantheman I think they moved the headers
04:22 dantheman again
04:24 admsyn joined #openframeworks
04:28 jvcleave i just did apt-get upgrade and didn't see anything come through that looked like firmware
04:28 jvcleave weird
04:30 dantheman yeah it isn't via apt-get
04:31 dantheman https://github.com/Hexxeh/rpi-update
04:31 dantheman rpi-update
04:31 dantheman you can target a specific commit id
04:31 dantheman sudo rpi-update fab7796df0cf29f9563b507a59ce5b17d93e0390
04:32 jvcleave i wonder if it is just best to write a patch script for OF for people that have the issue
04:32 dantheman o_O
04:32 dantheman maybe
04:33 dantheman I compiled past the issue
04:33 dantheman so its just a two liner change -so far- #famouslastwords
04:33 jvcleave right - but then you break everyone with the previous firmware right?
04:34 jvcleave i'd rather not require rpi-update - that gets muddy quick
04:35 dantheman well
04:35 dantheman it was required for the previous steps
04:35 jvcleave hmm - not when I updated the guide
04:35 jvcleave or actually we could stuff it in install_dependencies
04:36 dantheman https://github.com/openFrameworks-RaspberryPi/openFrameworks/wiki/Raspberry-Pi-Getting-Started
04:36 dantheman step number 3
04:36 jvcleave thats the old one
04:36 dantheman sure
04:37 jvcleave i'm just talking about starting from 0.8.0 and the shipping rasbian
04:37 dantheman oh
04:37 dantheman I don't think it is much to make someone run that command
04:38 dantheman otherwise people running on the latest firmware flashed from the factory can't use it
04:38 jvcleave that's my main question - does rpi-update come with raspbian? it used to be a self install
04:38 dantheman I thought it came with it
04:39 dantheman is it on yours
04:39 jvcleave nope
04:39 dantheman I'm running off noobs and its on that
04:39 jvcleave oh - i thought you meant in the newest guide
04:39 jvcleave let me check
04:39 dantheman no
04:39 dantheman the OS
04:39 dantheman NOOBS is kinda nice
04:39 jvcleave yeah - i just plugged that in
04:40 dantheman I have a dmg of a beta release
04:40 jvcleave yeah - it is here
04:40 dantheman rock on
04:40 jvcleave ha - computer for children
04:42 jvcleave let me verify it is broken and if so I'll change the guide
04:44 dantheman kk
04:44 dantheman jvcleave: I know right
04:44 jvcleave yeah - it's a bit ridiculous
04:44 dantheman oh let me push this oh shit everyone has to change their code now
04:45 dantheman I might have to comment on that commit… thanks for the HEADS UP
04:45 jvcleave yeah - what is the point of rpi-update being shipped? If you want to release firmware put it in the repo - 2 paths is a bit insane
04:46 dantheman idk
04:46 dantheman some people don't git it
04:46 jvcleave i also hate the idea of having to support whatever rpi-update decides to put out
04:48 admsyn joined #openframeworks
04:50 jvcleave haha http://forum.openframeworks.cc/index.php?topic=13052.new;topicseen#new
04:50 jvcleave wtf?
04:50 dantheman yeah
04:50 oneironaut joined #openframeworks
04:51 dantheman raspbian might ship with a different firmware now?
04:51 dantheman and flashes it
04:51 jvcleave so i guess if/when he runs rpi-update it will then break
04:51 dantheman that is the only thing I can think of
04:51 dantheman yah
04:51 dantheman if you run rpi-update it will fail
04:52 dantheman so we leave it and say…don't update your firmware
04:52 dantheman or update it and say update your firmware?
04:52 dantheman hmm
04:52 jvcleave yeah
04:52 dantheman haha
04:53 dantheman both!
04:53 dantheman lol
04:53 jvcleave if we update OF to require it we should run rpi-update from install dependencies
04:53 jvcleave or
04:54 jvcleave we check the headers and run a patch on ofAppEGLWindow.cpp
04:54 dantheman hmm
04:55 dantheman I still haven't finished compiling the core
04:55 dantheman I should have started it with distcc
04:55 jvcleave i am about to go through the same thing as the new image isn't hooked up to distcc
04:56 jvcleave I think since we shipped we should stick to the non-rpi-update
04:57 jvcleave make a hotfix script for people that have the issue
04:57 jvcleave and see if we can't accomodate both in 0.8.1
04:59 jvcleave I'll throw that thought in an email and see what the others think
05:16 dantheman ok
05:16 dantheman yeah the fix works
05:20 jvcleave so if we script it it could be 4 lines
05:20 jvcleave cd into libs/openFrameworks/app/
05:20 jvcleave rm ofAppEGLWindow.cpp
05:21 jvcleave wget your updated ofAppEGLWindow.cpp
05:21 jvcleave 3 lines :)
05:25 dantheman pretty much
05:25 dantheman actually it could be a search and replace
05:26 jvcleave right - just a one liner sed/grep deal
05:27 dantheman yup yup
05:27 dantheman I figured out how to cat video files from the pi together
05:27 dantheman it does just give you the raw pixels
05:28 dantheman I gotta get back to building raspivideo
05:28 dantheman lol
05:28 jvcleave you may run into this eventually if you are compiling raspivid https://github.com/raspberrypi/firmware/issues/180
05:28 jvcleave :)
05:29 dantheman oooo
05:30 jvcleave yeah MMAL is something Broadcom wrote as an alternative to OpenMax
05:31 jvcleave so much fewer docs
05:31 jvcleave i went through that as you actually have to download userland and doxy them yourself
05:32 jvcleave only to find the headers are missing as well
05:32 jvcleave they are here tho http://www.jvcref.com/files/PI/documentation/html/
05:33 jvcleave but like I was saying earlier - if you are not doing it in OF just use the raspivid binary and talk to it with system calls, etc
05:40 jvcleave ok - just confirmed out of the box 2013-07-26-wheezy-raspbian.zip and 0.8.0 together are fine
05:41 dantheman jvcleave: yeah
05:41 dantheman jvcleave: ok
05:42 dantheman yeah the raspivid stuff is all with python
05:42 dantheman or will be

05:55 jvcleave waiting for it to fail still

12:12 kikko_fr
12:12 ofTheo :)
12:13 admsyn
12:13 ofTheo how is JP been treating you all?
12:13 obviousjim been a blast
12:13 ofTheo the photos look great!
12:15 ofTheo love that with the new ofxaddons it shows roughly when updates were made in terms of OF releases.
12:15 obviousjim yeah that was a tricky one
12:15 ofTheo no shit! :)
12:15 obviousjim well
12:15 obviousjim tricky as in it may not be right ;)
12:15 obviousjim its just based on of release date
12:15 ofTheo haha
12:15 obviousjim so people may not have actually made their add-on work
12:16 ofTheo I could imagine also a bot that nags people with addons that there addon has not been updated in 300 days
12:16 ofTheo right
12:16 obviousjim yeah github issues API is something we could start threatening
12:16 obviousjim easiest thing is we can detect now if they have their folder's improperly formatted
12:16 ofTheo like that you show the forks as well!
12:16 obviousjim no src/, etc
12:16 ofTheo really nice stuff
12:17 obviousjim thx
12:17 ofTheo haha no example :)
12:17 ofTheo ahh http://github.com/ofTheo/ofxControlPanel has no stars :(
12:18 obviousjim i think it's because it hasn't been updated
12:18 obviousjim there is a bug we haven't fixed yet
12:18 obviousjim which is that you can only get 1000 results from github API
12:19 obviousjim and since it was last pushed 3  years ago
12:19 ofTheo right - good incentive
12:19 obviousjim the 5 other forks should be a good incentive too ;)
12:19 ofTheo haha -
12:19 ofTheo I still think a category view could be nice
12:20 ofTheo I really liked being able to browse all the addons but see them grouped by what type they are
12:20 obviousjim sure
12:20 obviousjim i think we could definitely integrate it in
12:20 ofTheo while I was looking for the category I wanted, I would find other addons that were interesting
12:20 ofTheo so it did two things at once
12:21 ofTheo the filter is almost too selective
12:21 obviousjim hmm so you're saying "i am looking at camera, but hey there is a cool graphics example"
12:21 ofTheo yeah - often I come looking for say blackmagic capture
12:21 ofarturo joined #openframeworks
12:22 ofTheo then as I am scrolling down to video, I am glancing at the other categories as well
12:22 bakercp joined #openframeworks
12:22 obviousjim that happens mostly because you are scrolling through piles of add ons. I think this is definitely something that happens with users that have a lot of knowledge of the ecosystem
12:22 obviousjim it can feel overwhelming for beginners i feel
12:22 wasawi joined #openframeworks
12:22 obviousjim (i'm not trying to argue that we shouldn't have that feature btw)
12:22 obviousjim but this is why we made these decisions
12:22 ofTheo sure - I think its more of an advanced thing and shouldn't be default
12:22 obviousjim its a question of defaults really
12:22 ofTheo just liked the discovery process
12:22 obviousjim jinx
12:23 ofTheo haha :D
12:23 ofTheo the work is really great - I think showing the forks is super useful - it gives a really good sense of the activity
12:23 obviousjim one thing we talked about heavily was the idea of sorting the contributors page
12:23 satoruhiga joined #openframeworks
12:24 ofTheo sort by? commits / addons
12:24 obviousjim #addons
12:24 obviousjim of even # of stars
12:24 obviousjim and decided against it for fear of making it a popularity contest
12:24 obviousjim brb
12:25 * kikko_fr is wondering how come ofxTimeline doesn't have a thumbnail yet :p
12:25 ofTheo hmm - I think default sort by name alphabetically. but option to sort by addons / last updated / starts
12:25 ofTheo also maybe http://ofxaddons.com/unsorted should be http://ofxaddons.com/incoming ?
12:26 ofTheo just so it sounds a bit more like they aren't in the main list due to newness rather than quality?
12:26 wasawi left #openframeworks
12:27 kikko_fr james is afk
12:29 wswi joined #openframeworks
12:29 obviousjim hmm
12:29 obviousjim we debated over that name
12:29 obviousjim 1) i think sort by stars by default is best, just so we keep strong add ons at the top as a good first impression
12:30 obviousjim unsorted covers two things
12:30 obviousjim repos that are not add ons but may be useful
12:30 obviousjim and ones without categories
12:30 obviousjim I haven't gone through a good admin pass yet
12:30 obviousjim as we've been fighting some caching bugs up until now
12:30 ofTheo okay sounds good
12:30 ofTheo btw would be nice if the category could come from the addon itself
12:31 ofTheo in addons_config.mk
12:31 ofTheo but I guess the admin pass is still needed right?
12:31 ofTheo ps: hi Kikko_fr!! :)
12:31 kikko_fr hi! ^^
12:32 obviousjim there is an open issue
12:32 obviousjim we're going to parse the description text for #category: graphics ,etc
12:32 obviousjim so the add-on creator can auto-categorize their own add-on or override the admin's selection
12:33 ofTheo cool!
12:34 ofTheo my thought was that if we start requiring addons_config.mk for addons it could happen there - but either is fine really.
12:34 ofTheo btw sorry if I sound critical, LOVE all of the changes - its a huge, huge improvement and is going to be central to OFs success going forward.
12:35 ofTheo can't wait till the PG can use ofxaddons.com like a packet manager ;)
12:35 kikko_fr we're on it ^^
12:35 ofTheo haha nice :)
12:36 ofTheo it was awesome to read the OF dreams - I was thinking to myself "there really isn't that much left for 1.0"
12:36 admsyn satoruhiga has a cool dependency-free lib for "git clone"-ing in c++
12:36 kikko_fr satoruhiga just implemented ofxGit today
12:36 ofTheo and then I read the dreams doc.
12:36 ofTheo whoa! nice!!
12:36 kikko_fr http://libgit2.github.com/
12:37 ofTheo damn nice - so not just download/clone then

12:39 ofTheo hey admsyn !

12:40 admsyn I think we're reserving that for tomorrow night :)
12:40 admsyn you know, srs bsns

23:28 asper hi there. i want to extract informations out of images. to be specific: black regions out of a black/white image, so i can give some particles "home regions". before i implement this myself i wanted to ask if there is a library that can do that.
23:30 asper taking a look at openCv....
23:36 asper ok, ofxCvContourFinders is a good start.
23:39 asper ok ofxCvBlob is just what i was searching for. thanks for developing openFrameworks.
