14:47 vamoss Hello world
14:47 workergnome Hello
14:48 vamoss :D
14:49 vamoss What the people use to say here?
14:52 jacres hi vamoss
14:52 jacres sorry, I'm unclear what you're asking
14:56 samatt joined #openframeworks
14:56 vamoss sorry my bad english, what the people usually talk here?
14:59 admsyn joined #openframeworks
15:00 workergnome About openframeworks software development
15:01 admsyn I'm having some persistent issues w/ an asus xtion depth camera, where it's super choppy every once in awhile (usually lasts for like 10 mins or so, even if I unplug / replug / reboot)
15:02 admsyn I'm using a really long USB cable, does that sound like the culprit?
15:02 admsyn it doesn't seem to be a problem many people are having..
15:02 admsyn or my google-fu is terrible today
15:02 vamoss back soon
15:04 workergnome how long is really long?
15:04 admsyn that is a very good question
15:04 admsyn :/
15:05 admsyn brb
15:05 admsyn ok maybe not "really long"
15:05 admsyn 11 feet
15:06 workergnome the spec is for 16max, so that shouldn't be a problem
15:06 admsyn orly
15:06 admsyn I might be close to that, actually
15:06 workergnome 16ft max
15:07 workergnome You could try sticking a powered USB hub in the middle—
15:07 workergnome you can get to 30m with that
15:07 * admsyn is inheriting a setup that's hard to figure out
15:07 admsyn ok then
15:07 admsyn yeah it sounds like it's probably the issue then, since it seems very "hardware0y"
15:07 admsyn *hardware-y
15:09 jacres admsyn: if you need some really good repeaters for longer distance, monoprice has some excellent ones that work very well
15:09 jacres wow, used "really good", "excellent", and "very well" in the same sentence..
15:09 workergnome http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=103&cp_id=10303&cs_id=1030312&p_id=8751&seq=1&format=2
15:09 workergnome Funny
15:09 workergnome that's what I was looking up
15:09 admsyn jacres: that's how you know it's good :)
15:09 jacres haha
15:09 admsyn or rather really good excellent well
15:10 jacres that cable saved my ass big time on a project once, so I'm very happy with it
15:11 jacres they also sell a really good ~35$ box for routing hdmi over ethernet.. had 1080p going 200ft over cat5e
15:17 tgfrerer speaking of excellence: anyone watched this yet? http://channel9.msdn.com/Events/GoingNative/2013/Opening-Keynote-Bjarne-Stroustrup
15:17 admsyn I saw it on HN, so I basically watched it :p
15:17 tgfrerer ahahah
15:18 admsyn is good? I saw a bjarne talk a little while ago before C++11 happened that was really good
15:18 tgfrerer i was wondering - and hoping someone had watched it already,it's on my list for bedtime reading, though =)
15:19 admsyn fwiw he gives good talks / blog posts etc I find. He's surprisingly NOT a crazy C++ architecture astronaut
15:20 jacres admsyn: you find he preaches more simplicity/safety?
15:20 * jacres is going to rock that haircut when he starts losing his hair.
15:21 admsyn yeah, he talks about KISS a lot (not by name) and talks about making things approachable for beginners and so on
15:21 admsyn also funny accent :D
15:22 * admsyn says the brutish canadian
15:25 admsyn there are a bunch of drones from 3M droning behind me
15:26 admsyn it is difficult to oF when people are all "market penetration"-ing behind me
15:32 admsyn workergnome: jacres: yeah it looks like it was the USB cable length
15:32 workergnome Nice!
15:33 admsyn so, note to self(s): too-long USB cable on an xtion = super ridiculous choppy framerate, roughly 0.2fps I'd guess
15:33 jacres oh nice, but that was workergnome's suggestion :) I just endorsed a very much excellent cable
15:33 admsyn jacres: noted!
15:34 jacres i think we ran 6 Kinects with 6 65ft cables
15:34 workergnome Well, if we're going to be pedantic about it, it was technically admsyn's suggestion, that I just endorsed.
15:34 jacres and none dropped
