18:19 cseder What would you say OpenFrameworks strengths are compared to Cinder?
18:29 oktapodi joined #openframeworks
18:30 jacres cseder: they're both comparable with similar goals. I'd say OF is a bit more acessible, has a larger community and a huge plus is Linux/Pi support if it's something you're interested in (this is a big thing for my needs)
18:31 GuidovanPossum and they have an irc that I know of, where is Cinder's
18:32 jacres graphically, they both use OpenGL, so you're going to find very similar approaches in doing things. OF relies more on cross-platform frameworks to handle functionality, whereas Cinder uses native code wherever possible to be closer to the OS (this may provide better performance for some things, but can mean the behaviour between windows and mac is not as guaranteed - it's also the primary reason for
18:32 jacres no Linux)
18:33 GuidovanPossum I've actually used Cinder a bit more, but have tried OF
18:33 jacres basically you can't go wrong, they're both great frameworks
18:34 jacres err can't go wrong with either
18:36 oktapodi joined #openframeworks
18:36 jacres Cinder is also heavily template driven with C++, which can make it pretty difficult to learn from its source. When I first started with OF, I learned a ton from browsing through the different OF classes to see how things were done under the hood. Unless you're an experienced C++ guy, it'll be tricky to browse through the Cinder source for learning purposes
18:36 Seich joined #openframeworks
18:37 jacres Because of this, I found my students had a much easier time using OF for projects than with Cinder
18:37 cseder Linux/Pi support is off course a major plus. But I'm under the impression that OF has quite some dependency libraries needed for it to work.
18:37 jacres cseder: it's all packaged with the download + portable, so there's no painful setup process
18:37 cseder Documentation for any of them are rather sparse I believe
18:38 cseder jacres: ah, ok
18:38 jacres and everything's linked in/copied into the app bundle, so your apps will be portable across machines
18:38 cseder so no more fuzz to set up than cinder?
18:38 GuidovanPossum I got interested in both and had to take a C++ class just to get started, because I was too rusty
18:38 cseder I like the TinderBox approach, but that's because I'm lazy
18:38 GuidovanPossum me too
18:38 jacres cseder: not at all, it's quick
18:39 jacres yeah TinderBox is definitely great. The project generator for OF is getting there, too
18:40 cseder I'm reading an introductory book on Cinder as we write, and I'm going to finish that and a "cookbook style" book after that. Then I'll be more capable of spotting pros and cons I guess
18:40 cseder Ok. Sounds like these two projects should join forces
18:41 GuidovanPossum if you haven't done the tutorial yet I'd highly recommend it for Cinder
18:41 jacres it's definitely great - gets you going quite quickly
18:41 GuidovanPossum it's the most fun one I've ever done
18:41 jacres be aware though that there's some newer ways to work with resources vs. that tutorial
18:41 jacres (resources being images, fonts,e tc)
18:41 cseder Maybe they will some day, who knows. Like what happened to Luxology and The Foundry rather out of the blue
18:42 GuidovanPossum and I'm excited to spend some more time with OF once I get time
18:42 cseder I'm reading a book from PacktPub called Begin Creative Coding with Cinder
18:43 cseder I already know C++, so the coding part should be ok
18:43 GuidovanPossum ah I remember when people were just starting to review that book
18:44 cseder I work as a C++ / C# developer, so I've got some valuable experience from that
18:44 GuidovanPossum everyone had good things to say about it
18:44 cseder And then?
18:44 GuidovanPossum well you should be set then
18:45 cseder Right now I'm trying to get a hold of the QuickTime SDK for Windows... Any Ideas?
18:45 cseder Can't find it on Apple's dev pages
18:46 GuidovanPossum I got to OpenGL and am a compete beginner in that
18:46 GuidovanPossum I found it
18:47 GuidovanPossum https://developer.apple.com/downloads/index.action?q=quicktime#
18:47 cseder Ah... found it...
18:48 cseder Looks rather dated though. Not updated since sept 2011
18:49 cseder But it's the only one...
18:49 oktapodi joined #openframeworks
18:55 dantheman joined #openframeworks
18:55 cseder I have one problem though... I always get an error when trying to install the Windows 7 Platform SDK... I'm trying again with only the headers and libraries...
18:56 cseder Looks like it's going better this time...
18:56 cseder I guess that's the only thing I'll need when I have VS 2012 Premium installed...
18:58 cseder Yay! It worked.
19:14 cseder I'm using Blender a lot. Are there any ways to create projects that uses Cinder or Open Frameworks in Blender?
19:14 cseder Like with the Game Engine

23:19 bo_ Hi, anyone here?
23:20 admsyn hi bo_
23:21 bo_ can I ask you a dumb question?
23:21 admsyn absolutely :)
23:21 bo_ I'm trying to run an openframeworks (flocking) example from the web, using visual studio
23:22 bo_ this one, to be more specific: https://sites.google.com/site/ofauckland/examples/ofxflocking-example
23:22 bo_ but I'm doing something wrong with linking my files I guess, as I'm getting errors.
23:22 admsyn ok, what do the errors look like?
23:22 bo_ LNK2019 errors
23:22 admsyn ok, but what's the whole error message?
23:23 bo_ one second
23:23 admsyn it should probably be a sentence or two. If it's long you can put it on pastebin.com
23:24 bo_ https://www.dropbox.com/s/nc4i1v98met1tgn/Capture.PNG
23:25 admsyn ok, so it looks like VS isn't compiling all of the files that are necessary
23:25 admsyn the first message makes it sound like you're not compiling a file that contains the Boid class
23:26 admsyn actually it sounds like you're just missing ofxFlocking (since that contains Boid.cpp)
23:26 admsyn did you add ofxFlocking to your project?
23:26 bo_ Alright. What I did: 1. Copy 'Emptyexample' , 2. Replace empty src files with the ones I want , 3 link the extra headers by dragging and dropping it in (?) 4. try to cimpile
23:27 bo_ I guess I should not link by dragging the files from windows explorer into my VS project, but I don't know how else to do it
23:27 admsyn yeah that's more-or-less the gist, especially with a simple addon like ofxFlocking (i.e. one that doesn't have any other libraries with it)
23:27 admsyn but it sounds like you didn't add the ofxFlocking folder to your project
23:27 admsyn or VS is getting confused somehow
23:27 bo_ it is added, but in which directory should it be?
23:28 admsyn you should be able to see it in the file browser part of VS (I use Xcode mostly so I'm not very familiar with VS)
23:28 bo_ currently I just copied all the extra ofxflocking files and put them in the src folder
23:28 bo_ I'm not able to see it in the file browser part of VS
23:28 admsyn you'll need to explicitly add them inside VS as well
23:29 admsyn probably just drag and drop (but don't add an any examples if ofxFlocking comes with examples)
23:29 bo_ okay
23:30 bo_ yay, it linked thanks
23:30 admsyn cools
23:30 admsyn so it's running?
23:30 bo_ :(
23:31 bo_ https://www.dropbox.com/s/oct1e0wx6hgrlj0/Capture2.PNG
23:31 bo_ 1 error left
23:32 admsyn interesting, what type of variable is  "acc" ? is it a float?
23:33 admsyn oh, it's probably a ofVec2f or ofVec3f?
23:33 admsyn yeah it is
23:34 bo_ ofvec2f
23:34 admsyn try replacing "= 0" with "= ofVec2f(0, 0);"
23:35 Seich joined #openframeworks
23:35 bo_ yep that did it
23:35 bo_ thanks a lot
23:35 admsyn np
23:35 bo_ saving us some serious time here :D
23:37 bo_ I'm trying to make this flocking 3 dimensional, and react to your hands with a leap motion controller
23:37 admsyn cool
23:38 admsyn how far have you gotten there?
23:39 bo_ well I started tonight with a friend, but there is an openframeworks leap motion lib (ofxLeapMotion)
23:40 bo_ Which works quite nice, we have some circles that react to our fingers. Now to implement the 2d flocking example
23:40 bo_ and create a 3rd dimension
23:41 bo_ for the flocking arrows, that is. the 3d space is already there.
23:41 admsyn yep, that might actually be just as easy as changing things to ofVec3f instead of ofVec2f :)
23:41 admsyn and tweaking the flocking algorithm to take z into account of course..
23:42 bo_ yeah, it shouldn't be too hard
23:43 bo_ After we have that done, we want to make a little game out of it
23:44 bo_ or interactive experience
23:44 bo_ maybe 5 different flocking swarms bound to each finger..
