18:18 GuidovanPossum so I just skimmed through the log of the last meeting and didn't quite understand about the future and the reason for the possible discontinued support of codeblocks?
18:24 Beliq joined #openframeworks
18:25 GuidovanPossum all I could see was that it has issues with some gui drag and drop options, but I've used most ides out there and prefer it and it's free and multiplatform
18:29 dine909 joined #openframeworks
18:45 pizthewiz Might be best to take up on of-dev or GitHub, but the feeling I got was that codeblocks the application is problematic and the team might feel they spend too much time helping people learn /workaround codeblocks external to oF itself.
18:45 pizthewiz I'm not sure if any of the core team use Codeblocks either
18:45 pizthewiz So if you were willing and interested… ;0)
18:56 pizthewiz joined #openframeworks
18:58 GuidovanPossum sure, that's just the feeling I was getting I figured they didn't use it much and it's all in what you're used to personally the of-dev forums?
18:59 GuidovanPossum I've set up and used of/cb on Debian/Ubuntu/Win and I think Mac but that's been a while
19:01 GuidovanPossum I would still try and get it to work even if discontinued officially, but that's why I figured I'd just inquire generally what the issues were
19:09 pizthewiz I'm not familiar with the issues, it sounded like setup problems, but I really couldn't say.
19:10 pizthewiz I think there was some interest in using CLion instead
19:21 pizthewiz joined #openframeworks
19:25 mode9 joined #openframeworks
19:30 GuidovanPossum it does look a bit shinier, but the $99 price vs free would be a huge deal to me
19:33 pizthewiz Someone during the meeting mentioned there is a free version of CLion, maybe student-only?
19:37 GuidovanPossum I only see 30day trial keys then $99
19:38 GuidovanPossum and I think that it's important for of to have at least one free option to fully use it, not just a demo
19:44 GuidovanPossum and I know you and it seems most here use osx piz so not a big deal to you, but I just figured I'd bring it up because it's more important to me
19:46 GuidovanPossum I did feel a bit bad about not helping out the person trying to get cb working yesterday, but they really didn't give much to go on except that it crashed
19:51 pizthewiz Yep, I think that is a legitimate concern, it would be nice to have a free IDE option, especially for cross-platform needs.
19:53 GuidovanPossum thanks and I'd do what I could to help, but I'm no expert so it would depend on what the difficulties were
19:56 GuidovanPossum I'm a bit familiar with the cb devs too so if there was anything on their end that could done or support added I could see
19:57 pizthewiz It might be good to broach on of-dev to get a better idea of if it was a thought vs a plan
19:58 pizthewiz I think so far only a thought, I can't imagine we'd ditch CB for the 0.9.0 release without a bit of discussion first
19:59 GuidovanPossum where of-dev?
19:59 GuidovanPossum on the site?
19:59 pizthewiz Its a mailing list
19:59 pizthewiz But the forum or GitHub would work as well
19:59 pizthewiz Gotta run, back a bit later on

21:57 admsyn hi Beliq
22:07 alski joined #openframeworks
22:08 alski Does anyone know of an example that includes removing elements from vectors?
22:09 alski The docs suggest creating a bool function checkDead, but I'd like to track down an example if there is one.
22:10 admsyn it's a bit awkward, most c++ stuff will probably use some variation on remove_if http://en.cppreference.com/w/cpp/algorithm/remove
22:10 admsyn it's easier to remove stuff from a list but that comes with other tradeoffs
22:11 alski Right. I think in my external class, I'll trigger a bool message when my condition is met, and then within ofApp.cpp I'll be checking each existing element within update and remove whatever returns true.
22:11 admsyn you can also just do myVector.erase(myVector.being() + indexYouWantToRemove);
22:11 admsyn *being -> begin
22:12 admsyn yeah that'd be a pretty normal way to do
22:13 admsyn just FYI erasing stuff from the middle of vector is usually pretty bad performance-wise, but it may not matter in practice
22:13 alski Great. Another problem I could see coming up is the fact that I am trying to remove another vector (multidimensional)... will I have to clear that vector of it's contents, then delete it from the outermost vector?
22:14 admsyn no, when you destroy a vector it'll call the destructor on all the things it contains
22:14 admsyn caveat being that if you have a vector of raw pointers that won't work
22:14 alski Ok good. One more problem down. And yeah, no pointers, so I *should* be safe.
22:15 alski Removing something from the middle of a vector will reorder all other elements in it right?
22:15 admsyn they should still be in the same order but behind the scenes it'll have to shuffle everything down in memory yeah
22:16 admsyn and it'll invalidate any iterators you're using, so you can't just iterate through a vector and remove stuff at the same time
22:16 admsyn it's a bit nuanced, I'd recommend just googling the various stack overflow posts on removing stuff from std::vector, you won't get much just from OF examples
22:17 alski Yeah, I have a feeling this will take some homework beyond OF. Thanks for the tips as always admsyn
22:17 admsyn again, it may be better to use a std::list if you're going to be removing stuff from the middle all the time, but that has tradeoffs (like not being able to do myThings[200])
22:19 admsyn np
22:19 alski I might even just have to think of a solution that doesn't involve removing.

22:41 pttrsmrt HI guys, quick question:
22:42 pttrsmrt I'm loading a model with ofxAssimpModelLoader, and add a light to the scene.
22:42 pttrsmrt How can I make the different objects (from .dae) cast shadows?
22:43 pttrsmrt The objects only cast shadows on thenselves, not each other.
22:43 pttrsmrt Do I have to do this myself with shaders or something, or is it a setting I've missed?
22:44 admsyn I feel like you'll probably have to dig in to shaders / diy shadowing but I'm not 100% sure tbh
22:49 pizthewi_ joined #openframeworks
22:52 pttrsmrt Yeah, kind of what I feared. Always wanted to learn more shaders, so I guess now's the time.
