01:25 jar286 kcranstn, just noticing we have no agenda for tomorrow’s call…
01:26 kcranstn yes, was hoping to work on that today but got trapped in taking-the-inlaws-to-the-airport hell
01:26 kcranstn you have thoughts?
01:26 kcranstn (in the few moments before Darren returns home with his parents, who were unsuccessful in leaving RDU)
01:27 kcranstn would like to look at Lawrence agenda

15:08 kcranstn can someone else try and load tree.opentreeolife.org ?
15:08 kcranstn I can ping it, but won’t load in browser
15:08 jimallman indeed, it seems to be down
15:09 kcranstn just loaded (but took about 2 min)
15:10 jimallman hm, i’m stopped cold on both this and devtree.opentreeoflife.org
15:10 jimallman browser says it’s a dns failure, but i can see the domain with ‘dig’ just fine. :-/
15:11 mtholder seems OK for me.
15:12 kcranstn it’s loading for me, but pretty slow
15:12 kcranstn maybe it is an NC problem ;)
15:13 jimallman fwiw, i’m using Google DNS servers (8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4)
15:15 kcranstn I am embarassed to admin that I don’t know how to check that
15:16 jimallman flushing DNS cache doesn’t seem to help
15:16 jimallman kcranstn: in Network utility, choose Advanced… for the active network.
15:16 jimallman from here, click the DNS tab to see your DNS servers
15:17 jimallman s/Network utility/Network preferences pane/
15:17 jimallman kcranstn: ^ sorry about that
15:17 kcranstn got it
15:22 jimallman kcranstn: are you also using google’s dns servers (8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4)?
15:22 kcranstn no, duke
15:22 jimallman it’s odd, curl gets a proper respose with no problem
15:22 jimallman $ curl -vv http://tree.opentreeoflife.org/
15:23 kcranstn mtholder merging his own PRs… tsk tsk ;)
15:31 kcranstn jimallman - you ever done any remote pair programming?
15:31 jimallman yes, including just yesterday
15:31 kcranstn what tools?
15:32 jimallman i’ve used TeamViewer, VNC, occasionally GNU screen...
15:32 kcranstn I was looking at this: https://atom.io/packages/motepair
15:32 jimallman interesting!
15:33 kcranstn thinking that it might be useful in my learning curve fo the opentree repo
15:33 jimallman sure. i take it Atom is the editor?
15:33 kcranstn it = pair programming, irrelevant of specific tool
15:33 kcranstn yes, atom = editor
15:33 kcranstn motepair = package
15:33 * jimallman nods
15:34 jimallman i believe OS X has VNC built in (perhaps under another Apple(tm) name)
15:35 jimallman ah yes, they call it Screen Sharing
15:35 kcranstn we use that frequently for tech support on parents’ computers :)
15:36 jimallman i’d prefer something like this, since we can edit and preview results together.
15:38 * jimallman is reading now on how to use it… i take it the “server” is your (or my) public-facing IP address
15:45 kcranstn the screen sharing is slightly more invasive, because it is not passive sharing - the remote gets control
15:45 kcranstn s/slightly/a lot/
15:46 jimallman agreed. you can configure whether the visitor can control things in Sharing > Screen Sharing > Computer Settings…
15:46 jimallman but as you say, it’s still pretty invasive.
15:46 mtholder joined #opentreeoflife
15:50 jimallman same with screen/tmux, i think. to share just the editor, motepair (or screenhero?) might be better
15:50 * jimallman is reading up on screenhero...
15:50 jimallman https://screenhero.com/features.html
15:53 jimallman drat. “New signups are closed while we integrate with Slack.”
15:57 jimallman OK, i see why you’re looking at motepair. i’ll install Atom and take a closer look…
15:57 jimallman kcranstn: ^
15:57 kcranstn cool

16:37 jimallman kcranstn: fyi, i’m set up with Atom and motepair. let me know when you’d like to give it a spin!
16:37 kcranstn maybe this afternoon after the meeting?
16:38 jimallman sounds good. i’m good until 4pm.
16:38 jimallman i’m available til 4pm, i mean
17:42 * jimallman is grabbing lunch, back in a few minutes

18:19 jimallman kcranstn: if you’d like to try motepair, i’m set up with session ID 2d405b61ac5fe59e
18:19 kcranstn give me 5 min
18:19 jimallman ok. i’m in the root folder of the main opentree repo (i think we need to be in sync)
18:36 kcranstn hmm.. .can’t seem to get this working
18:37 kcranstn you still connected?
18:43 jimallman hi kcranstn!
18:43 kcranstn hi jimallman!
18:43 jimallman i think i accidentally changed my session ID, try 5d282e316daa5979
18:44 kcranstn nothin...
18:44 kcranstn https://github.com/motepair/motepair/issues/23
18:44 kcranstn maybe
18:44 jimallman hm, how are you connecting?
18:45 kcranstn with the “Connect” menu option?
18:45 kcranstn see Session ID at bottom of screen
18:45 jimallman i thought that would be the way… enter the same session ID et voila!
18:45 jimallman ah, cool
18:45 jimallman mine is still 5d…blah...79
18:46 jimallman i’m editing ./curator/controllers/default.py, maybe you can see me there? lines 12-15
18:47 jimallman hm, i’m on a funky branch (support-tree-collections).. maybe that confuses the issue
18:47 kcranstn I see blank lines on 12-15
18:48 jimallman that’s me! do you see me in the margin?
18:48 kcranstn ok, working
18:49 kcranstn I don’t see a chat window in any of their screenshots / docs
18:49 jimallman hrmm
18:50 kcranstn but we have irc!
18:50 jimallman this would also work well in tandem with a hangout (for chat and screen sharing as needed)
18:50 kcranstn ok, I”ll start one
18:51 jimallman i definitely think i should stash or commit my unsaved changes here, so we can move to a common branch
18:51 kcranstn sounds good
18:51 kcranstn “Jim is not available"
18:52 jimallman ?
18:52 jimallman lemme log into G+
20:40 jimallman kcranstn: Do you want to commit our changes to branch, or shall I?
20:41 kcranstn go ahead. I need to run
20:41 jimallman ok, will do
