00:00 rhebus Does anyone know how to find the text currently selected? and separately, to delete the currently selected text?
00:05 skeeterbug StyledTextCtrl is in the Wx::STC
00:05 skeeterbug is in*
00:14 skeeterbug rhebus: according to the C++ docs, wxStyledTextCtrl has a GetSelectedText() method that returns a wxString, and DeleteBack() deletes the selection if there is one, if not, it deletes the character before the caret.
00:16 rhebus skeeterbug: thanks
00:16 rhebus where are these docs?
00:16 skeeterbug i am having a hard time finding any for perl
00:17 skeeterbug here is what i was looking at though
00:17 skeeterbug http://docs.wxwidgets.org/trunk/classwx_styled_text_ctrl.html
00:20 rhebus thanks
00:22 skeeterbug np, did it work?
00:24 rhebus YES
00:24 rhebus yes it did
00:25 rhebus I have got extract subroutine working \o/
00:25 rhebus though it needs some refinement
00:25 skeeterbug sweet, it looks like it loads the native STC library, so all those methods should map directly i would think
00:25 skeeterbug taking off for the night, good luck on your code
00:25 skeeterbug left #padre
00:39 rhebus I've submitted a patch for #531, anyone available to test and patch it in?
00:44 Ryan52 ugh new dependency.
00:44 rhebus garu: you still around?
00:44 rhebus Ryan52: is that a problem?
00:44 Ryan52 what's its test accuracy look like?
00:44 Ryan52 (and its deps)
00:45 rhebus it passes the existing make test
00:45 rhebus I haven't done any new testcases
00:45 rhebus what do you mean "and its deps"?
00:45 Ryan52 one sec.
00:48 Ryan52 sorry, went afk.
00:48 Ryan52 rhebus: http://deps.cpantesters.org/
00:48 Ryan52 Devel::Refactor has an 87% chance of installing successfully.
00:49 Ryan52 so that's fine.
00:51 Ryan52 tho it does still mean I have another thing to package for Debian, ugh.
00:51 Ryan52 anyways, ignore me, Devel::Refactor looks fine.
00:51 rhebus heh
00:51 rhebus have you seen the functionality it provides though? :)
00:52 * Alias wants a "rescan plugins" option in the plugin manager
00:52 Alias So you can install new plugins on the fly without a restart
00:52 Ryan52 Alias: make a ticket =P
00:53 Alias yeah, sigh
00:53 Alias I think I shall just fix it
00:53 Alias When I can find 10 minutes
00:53 Ryan52 yay
00:54 Alias (Since I wrote almost all of the relevant code)
00:54 Alias <-- sux
00:54 Ryan52 if Alias "sux", then what does that mean about the rest of us?!? uh-oh. :)
00:55 rhebus Ryan52: if you decide to use/not to use my patch, can you let me know by email? I'm gonna have to leave soon
00:55 Ryan52 rhebus: what's your email address?
00:55 Ryan52 rhebus: I'll review it when I get back, I'm going for a bike ride.
00:55 rhebus sure thing

03:35 Alias oooo
03:35 Alias "embargo"
03:35 Alias Great way to describe it
03:41 submersible release announcement embargo /
03:41 submersible ?
03:45 CSJewell Yes.
03:47 CSJewell The reason is that it's built on a machine that's set to GMT+10. Since the EU::MM checks the makefile's creation date for "out-of-dateness" against when perl\lib\Config.pm and perl\lib\CORE\config.h, it can't install new modules for about 12 hours more.
03:49 submersible :P
03:50 submersible wave of the future.
03:51 submersible Yes - I guess you _MIGHT_ be able to play games w/ the build environment to say build in zulu time.
03:52 submersible call it the - wait while the rest of the world catches up embargo
04:04 CSJewell I'll have to see if I can do that for the next time.
04:08 CSJewell [The time that's on those two files is 2009-09-10 5:22am. In my time zone (GMT-6) it]
04:08 CSJewell it's 10:08pm on the 9th.
04:11 CSJewell .msi is uploaded at http://strawberryperl.com/packages/padre-standalone-0.45.msi, uploading of the .zip had to be restarted.

04:17 szabgab good morning
04:18 * szabgab opening tickets regarding stuff in the backlog
04:18 szabgab thanks for the new contributors!
04:19 szabgab CSJewell, thank you
04:19 CSJewell good morning, szabgab...
04:19 Alias When I build some of my stuff on my GMT server, I usually hand-twiddle all the files to be gmt dated
04:19 Alias Just in case
04:21 CSJewell I'm in GMT-6 right now, so there's only 6 hours of people 'behind' me normally, and considering that it takes a few hours to put up all the announcements and stuff... it hasn't been much of a worry.
04:21 * szabgab takes children to school
04:21 CSJewell I will remember to roll it back the next time, however.
04:23 CSJewell Set it to Anchorage time temporarily ... that way there's no trouble at all.
04:30 szabgab CSJewell, could you please describe what is in that package and what are the known issues - related to packaging? I am not clear on that myself
04:31 CSJewell That one is a "Padre Standalone" package - it's only Padre and its dependencies, not the "Plus Six" stuff.
04:34 CSJewell It's based on 5.10.0 - but that's the last one that will be. It includes all but one of the upgrades to Strawberry that will be in the next beta: the "new libraries" that kmx has provided, DBD::Pg, DB_File, Imager and GD, Crypt::SSLeay, Net::SSLeay, Net::SSH::Perl and Module::Signature and their dependencies.
04:36 CSJewell The one packaging issue is since I built it in an "in the future" time zone for just about everybody, it can't install modules until it passes the date and time that perl happened to be built [10 September, 5:22am] in the time zone of the person using it.
04:37 CSJewell thus, the embargo on the announcement that I'm requesting.
04:38 CSJewell It does NOT install its modules to vendor\ rather than site\ - I'm working on that right now, and once that's done, I'll start building a beta of Strawberry.
04:41 ppant joined #padre
04:42 CSJewell "Almost Six" I want to wait on until after Seattle is released, since it's coming up in - what, 8 days?
04:42 Ryan52 parrot's got a new release in 8 days?
04:42 Ryan52 that seems a bit soon..
04:42 CSJewell I thought it was the 17th.
04:43 CSJewell It is: http://github.com/rakudo/rakudo/blob/master/docs/release_guide.pod
04:44 CSJewell Tonight's the 9th, correct?
04:44 Ryan52 oh. so it is. /me adds to TODO list to email Allison. thanks for the reminder. :P
04:45 Ryan52 ya, you're right.
04:45 * Ryan52 is packaging rakudo for Debian, but had to wait for the next parrot version...felt like it came too soon :P
05:01 szabgab CSJewell, so can I install that Padre stand-alone anywhere or only in c:\strawberry ?
05:02 CSJewell Only in c:\strawberry - I'm looking at changing that in November (after the flood of reports from the October Strawberry release has gone down.)
05:02 CSJewell The .zip is now uploaded.

05:18 * Alias is insanely busy over this week and next
05:18 Alias I'll try, but can't promise. Remind me if I don't get back to you

05:49 CSJewell And please, November, not October, for the "install anywhere bit" - I won't have that done for October.
05:52 CSJewell Basically, Strawberry works on a 3-month cycle - bug fixes from the release [and required rebuilds] in the release month (October), major changes in the next month (November, in this case), and the beta release and bug fixes from that in the month before the release (September and December).
05:55 szabgab CSJewell, could you please edit that page then and add the schedule of the planned changes?

06:16 szabgab Sewi, yes I think we should do that

06:17 Ryan52 I think the new dep is fine (I lookied into the dep).

06:20 CSJewell I made the module names link to the .pm files in the 'trac browser', by the way.

07:00 szabgab I think I would say delete $self->{error} if I don't want any previous errors to be present
07:00 Sewi I don't like the way nearly everything is done there. The best thing would be to include it into the Syntax Check/warnings/problems - tab, but I'm currently too busy :-(

07:26 Alias <Sewi>There is a new fix for ticket http://padre.perlide.org/trac/ticket/531 which adds a new dependency. Shall it be appliled?
07:26 Sewi Hi Alias
07:27 * azawawi checks whether Devel::Refactor installs on xp or not
07:27 Alias The dependency it adds has 1) A dependency on 5.8 2) No significant CPAN Testers failures 3) No recursive deps
07:27 Alias So as far as I'm concerned, it's a low risk addition
07:27 szabgab Sewi, AFAIK we don't have a clear set of written rules for the Changes file. yet
07:28 mikehh bah - trying to get the output again I managed to install it :-}
07:28 Alias The ones that are a problem are where the new dependency adds new entire chains of deps, or where the new dep (or it's deps) don't install reliably
07:28 Alias It's especially safe because we don't have to load it in the base compile, so it shouldn't even add weight to most of the threads
07:28 azawawi Alias: it installed on xp without installing any prerequisites...
07:28 Alias yup
07:28 Alias +1 as far as I'm concerned
07:28 Alias It's forward progress...
07:28 Alias And we can always remove it later if it's a problem
07:29 mikehh getting all those architecture dependant modules re-installed is a pain

08:53 Sewi yes, quite often
08:54 azawawi how about using ctrl-d ?
08:54 rhebus can someone explain this karma thing to me?
08:54 azawawi rhebus++
08:54 azawawi karma rhebus
08:54 Hyppolit Karma of rhebus is 1
08:54 Sewi azawawi: this is "double line"
08:54 azawawi Sewi: yeah on eclipse, it is delete line and textmate seems to be the same
08:55 rhebus karma azawawi
08:55 Hyppolit Karma of azawawi is 1110
08:55 rhebus am I worth 0.1% of you then? :)
08:55 szabgab rhebus, you just multiplied by your karma by an infinite number
08:56 Sewi azawawi: This is part of the key binding issue which must be solved globally
08:56 rhebus heh
08:56 szabgab (remove the first by)
08:56 szabgab rhebus, Hyppolit is just counting how many times rhebus++ is added to a name
08:57 azawawi Sewi: key bindings in preferences then...
08:57 azawawi Sewi: and actions
08:57 rhebus hmm I've seen it twice so far, it's not very good at counting
08:57 szabgab it counts the commits and when we appreciate each others work
08:57 szabgab Hyppolit has its own problems in life, I guess
08:57 Sewi azawawi: Ctrl-L also copies the current line (line Ctrl-X). I tried to make him not copy an empty line when removing it but didn't find a way to do it.
08:58 azawawi Sewi: http://www.yellowbrain.com/stc/keymap.html
08:58 szabgab rhebus, other than that it has no real meaning
08:58 Sewi azawawi: But when overriding the function, I'ld have to rebuild what it currently does. This was my problem :-)
08:59 rhebus szabgab: thanks for explaining :)
08:59 azawawi Sewi: ah the Padre-ConfigKeys something branch
08:59 azawawi Sewi: i totally forgot about that
08:59 szabgab rhebus, see:
08:59 szabgab karma notepad
08:59 Hyppolit Karma of notepad is 17
09:00 azawawi Sewi: any chance we could merge that with what we have?
09:01 rhebus hehe

09:01 rhebus karma coffee
09:01 Hyppolit Karma of coffee is 1
09:01 azawawi coffee--
09:01 azawawi karma coffee
09:01 Hyppolit Karma of coffee is 0
09:01 Sewi azawawi: I did this before learning about the Actions thing. Maybe, I should throw it away.
09:01 azawawi coffee--
09:01 azawawi karma coffee
09:01 Hyppolit Karma of coffee is -1
09:01 rhebus coffee+=1000
09:01 rhebus karma coffee
09:01 Hyppolit Karma of coffee is -1
09:02 rhebus I'll stop now
09:03 azawawi Sewi: you created some UI right?
09:04 azawawi Sewi: and that's what we should keep... The rest is plumbing...
09:04 Sewi I tried, but I'm really a Wx noop. All of my UIs until now were created using Visual Basic or HTML :-)
09:04 Sewi I think, I should get through the Wx samples to learn something about this topic...
09:04 azawawi Sewi: no problem just start it and i'll help out :)
09:06 Sewi thx
09:06 szabgab Sewi, and you could also write a few more wx examples and add them to our directory!
09:07 Sewi I think that my example would be bad examples atm :-)
09:07 szabgab IMHO that's the best way to learn
09:07 szabgab and we will help you

09:08 * Sewi is currently busy with another challenge created by szabgab :-)
09:08 azawawi the important thing is to start an effort to do one thing... perfection is not needed there...
09:09 Alias (As long as it's NEW work)
09:09 azawawi Alias: :)
09:09 szabgab "We don't built a perfect editor. we just build the best one"
09:09 Sewi very good message!
09:09 Alias Attempts to speculatively half-way do refactor of existing code without a clear reason to replace has been problematic
09:09 azawawi Alias: but shooting for perfection for the first time = missing deadlines :)
09:10 Alias But I've seen no significant problems with even the newbiest implementations when attempt new concepts and new features
09:10 Alias azawawi: Anything is better than nothing the first time
09:10 Alias Perfection is preferred when refactoring
09:10 rhebus Alias++
09:10 Alias When HEAVY refactoring at least
09:11 Alias Light cleanups etc no big deal as long as they are a bit better
09:11 rhebus which is why I'm currently focusing on implementing refactoring features :)
09:11 Alias :)
09:11 Alias Yay
09:11 Alias We've always been a little weak on those
09:11 Alias Nobody wants to do the hard work :)
09:11 azawawi yeah even in Perl 6...
09:11 azawawi im lazy :)
09:11 Alias Probably mostly because PPI is thorough but a bit hard to code against
09:12 Alias Or at the very least, verbose to code again
09:12 Alias against
09:12 azawawi PPI would benefit a lot if married with jQuery-like selectors...

09:13 Hyppolit trunk/template.padre.perlide.org/tt/pages/
09:13 rhebus I've just been finding existing code which does what we want and plumbing it in
09:15 azawawi Alias: btw how can one get a commit bit to svn.ali.as ? talk to AdamK? :)
09:16 rhebus argh, I've been having a frequent problem while hacking on padre: I see a method call like $self->MyMethodName and I don't know how to find that method's definition or documentation
09:16 rhebus beside using a grep, which doesn't help when it's from a library
09:16 rhebus currently I'm looking for a GetStatusBar method, but I can't tell what package it's in :/
09:16 Sewi azawawi: There is still one thing left before we get him on Padre: http://padre.perlide.org/trac/query?status=accepted&status=assigned&status=new&status=reopened&group=status&order=priority&milestone=Get+Adam+Kennedy+on+Padre :-)
09:17 Sewi rhebus: Try Ctrl+left-mouse-click on the word.
09:17 Sewi And there is a "find in files" option in the Search menu
09:17 rhebus currently editing in vim :P
09:19 rhebus what is ctrl-left mouse supposed to do?
09:19 azawawi rhebus: http://www.yellowbrain.com/stc/keymap.html ?
09:19 rhebus aah found it, it's inherited from wxFrame
09:20 rhebus azawawi: not listed there
09:20 rhebus that's just keyboard-only shortcuts
09:21 azawawi rhebus: then ignore me :)
09:21 Sewi rhebus: It scans for the definition of what you're clicking.
09:24 azawawi szabgab: what's error list for ?
09:26 rhebus listing errors, I'd guess
09:26 rhebus :P
09:28 Alias Added new user azawawi@cpan.org
09:28 szabgab azawawi, when you run a script it collects the STDERR and displays it there too
09:29 szabgab at least when using the output window and not the external window
09:29 Alias rhebus: The convention is that lowercase methods are implemented in Perl (and mostly our code) and uppercase methods come from the Wx C bindings
09:30 Alias Helps keep the "stuff you can read through our code to learn about" separate from the "stuff you'll need to trawl through the C docs for wxWidgets for"
09:30 Alias So basically, in package Foo with $self->GetStatusBar, you look at the Wx::ClassName that the package inherits from
09:30 Alias Then you go look up the package wxClassName in the C documentation
09:31 Alias And it should have a GetStatusBar listed in that class
09:31 rhebus Alias: thanks a lot, that's clearer
09:32 * Alias has been meaning to do some screencasts for this stuff
09:34 azawawi Alias: thanks :)

16:44 g0bl1n hi, is Padre usable in Ruby ? Syntax highl., etc ?
16:45 Sewi usable: yes, like any text editor :-) Syntax highlighting, etc: not afaik.
16:46 Sewi This module may be helpful: http://search.cpan.org/~szabgab/Padre-Plugin-Parrot-0.25/lib/Padre/Plugin/Parrot.pm
16:50 g0bl1n Sewi, ty
16:51 PerlJam View -> View Document As -> Ruby
16:51 Alias g0bl1n: Padre is designed to support non-Perl languages as secondary languages
16:52 PerlJam I don't have any ruby code handy, but it seems to highlight things
16:52 Alias g0bl1n: So we provide the bits that more or less come bundled with Scintilla, but not much more. Although someone could, if they wanted, write a plugin to add additional features for a specific language
16:52 Alias Pluggable document model objects, etc
16:52 g0bl1n is there anyone packaging it for say, Debian ? Ubuntu ?
16:52 g0bl1n Padre i mean
16:57 El_Che yes
16:58 El_Che it will be on ubuntu 9.10
16:58 bricas g0bl1n: the debian-perl team is doing it for Debian (natch) -- ubuntu will naturally mirror upstream over time.
16:58 bricas El_Che: oh, is someone doing it directly for ubuntu?
16:58 g0bl1n sweet
17:00 El_Che bricas: the same people, but I though szabgab got confirmation for ubuntu
17:00 El_Che I am subscribed to the "bug"

17:04 bricas yeah, i see now. https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/padre
17:05 szabgab g0bl1n, I think there is a syntax highligher for Ruby
17:05 szabgab and I hope we will be able to integrate syntax highlighting based on Cardinal
17:07 szabgab g0bl1n, actually now that I checked it I see I have already integrated it once but later I could not build Cardinal so I am not sure what is the status now
17:07 * szabgab is now reading what was the question
17:07 g0bl1n szabgab, :)
17:10 szabgab we have at least on small ruby example in our repo
17:11 szabgab g0bl1n, are you familiar with Cardinal?
17:11 g0bl1n szabgab, no
17:11 szabgab it is a Ruby implementation over the Parrot virual machine
17:12 g0bl1n szabgab, wait, seem to have read something about
17:12 g0bl1n and you have syn.high. for Cardinal ?
17:12 szabgab if we manage to compile it again -and I guess it was just out of swing when I tried last time - then we can use its parstree for highlighting ruby
17:12 azawawi joined #padre
17:13 szabgab sorry, what is syn.high ?
17:13 g0bl1n syntax highlight sorry
17:13 szabgab we can use Cardinal for syhi
17:13 szabgab ;-)
17:14 g0bl1n :)
17:14 szabgab so it is not perfect Ruby,
17:14 szabgab it is up to the level of readyness of Cardinal
17:15 szabgab See the Parrot plugin of Padre for more info
17:15 g0bl1n I will, I'm building Padre on this Ubuntu
17:16 szabgab and how did you get to Padre anyway if you are interested in Ruby?
17:17 * g0bl1n likes testing IDE's (coming from Vim). This looks fine, simple, clean
17:19 szabgab I hope soon we will be able to extend padre using ruby
17:20 PerlJam g0bl1n: It's quite good. I've tried it a couple of times over the last year and last week I started using it full time (I've used vi and its clones almost exclusively since 1992)
17:29 g0bl1n ty
17:36 El_Che szabgab: let us first conquer the perl world before we conquer the universe :)
17:36 g0bl1n :)
17:37 g0bl1n El_Che, with Padre (priest in portuguese) you mean evangelize the perl world :)
17:38 El_Che padre os camelhos :)
17:38 PerlJam El_Che: why so limit yourself though? padre -- *Programmer's* application development and refactoring environment sounds great to me :)
17:38 El_Che ahaha
17:38 El_Che that's great indeed
17:39 El_Che "Padre application development and refactoring environment" is the next logical step
17:39 g0bl1n :)
17:40 szabgab g0bl1n, #cardinal is on this server if you want to talk to them

22:27 cowens Padre::Pod2HTML either has a bug or is exposing a bug in Pod::Simple::XHTML, L<> gets printed twice
22:27 cowens I think the problem is with the overriding of emit
