00:08 Alias_ <Sewi> Or just replace the splash by a "censored by Debian" picture :-)
00:08 Alias_ I was actually thinking of renaming Padre to "Ice Moth" for Debian :)
00:09 Getty mh?
00:09 Getty problem with debian?
00:09 Getty i hope not
00:10 CSJewell Picture licensing problem. :(
00:10 Alias_ Debian needs all imagery to be commercial
00:10 CSJewell afaict.
00:10 Getty then replace it? ;)
00:10 Alias_ Most photography on Flickr etc worth stealing has Non-Commercial
00:10 Alias_ So we'll put two images into Padre
00:10 Alias_ Debian will just delete the one they can't use
00:11 Alias_ And then Padre will automatically switch to the backup "boring" splash/about imagery
00:11 Getty i dont think they can do it...
00:11 Alias_ They can patch files, so they can delete files
00:11 Getty it would be still laying on their servers in the source .tar.gz
00:11 Getty dont know if that would make a problem
00:11 Getty they are very strict
00:11 Alias_ It won't be in the source tarball
00:12 Alias_ It will be in our tarball, but not theirs
00:12 Getty what about going non-free and "who cares"?
00:12 Getty just curious
00:12 Getty everybody uses non-free
00:13 Getty but best would be to solve it
00:13 Getty and get a proper licensed picture
00:13 Getty i mean should be that hard for a splash screen, or?
00:13 Getty shouldnt be
00:13 Alias_ It's hard
00:13 Alias_ Surprisingly so
00:14 Getty if you dont have any suggestions, i can give you an email of an graphican who might spare some time, i got some wishes free from him, i could even ask a girl graphican ;) she is much more artistic
00:15 Getty you can tell him what you think and direction and he can do something, or i let the girl free hand ;) she is full artistic ;)

00:21 Alias_ We've asked someone to do a boring one
00:21 Alias_ Lets see how it goes first
00:21 Ryan52 I'll remove the splash screen altogether before i move it to non-free
00:22 Ryan52 buut yes Alias's plan will be no problem, I can repack the tarball to remove the file.
00:30 Getty Alias: if it doesnt work out just gimme a shot
00:33 Alias_ Yup, will do
00:34 Alias_ Getty: We actually want to rotate or replace the "pretty" ones at regular intervals
00:34 Alias_ So it might be worthwhile anyway
00:45 Getty or add severals and always make a random one, and people can vote "i dont wanna see that" out ;)
01:05 tsee_ joined #padre
01:10 Alias_ Theoretically a good idea, except for the tarball bloat factor
01:17 mohsen joined #padre
01:38 perletc joined #padre
01:54 Getty Alias: longtime it should reduce to one
01:54 Getty Alias: so it would be only a middle-time bloat factor
01:54 Getty would be interesting to see what people "world wide" thinks about specific picture styles
01:54 Getty or do a chinese dude, prefer pictures of chinese artist?

03:35 user_1261 hi, question: how do I actually utilize a pre-built padre plugin?
03:36 user_1261 I just downloaded padre::plugin::vi, and reloaded all plugins in padre
03:37 Alias_ You might need to restart Padre atm
03:37 Alias_ I don't think it detects newly installed plugins (yet)
03:37 Alias_ Just handles upgrades to things that are already installed
03:39 user_1261 beautiful
03:39 user_1261 thanks for that
03:41 user_1261 and with the cpan plugin list
03:42 user_1261 do you have to use the filter text box in order to find what you're looking for? it doesn't seem to allow scrolling past a certain # of modules

06:27 azawawi good morning
06:28 azawawi Ryan52: please take a look at http://irclog.perlgeek.de/padre/2009-09-28#i_1549728
06:29 Ryan52 "Sewi
06:29 Ryan52 "Debian never uses current versions :-)"
06:29 azawawi Ryan52: I am sorry that I "ping-ed" yesterday and slept but it was like 1am :)
06:29 Ryan52 uhh, ya, we don't use current versions when upstream won't legally allow us to.
06:30 Ryan52 :)
06:30 azawawi Ryan52: so is it only the splash screen?
06:30 Ryan52 yep.
06:31 azawawi how about changing it to a blank white splash with the text Padre IDE?
06:31 Ryan52 oh, ribasushi knows jawnsy.
06:32 Sewi Ryan52: Sorry for joking about Debian but I got so much problem with their nothing-new-policy starting from kernels which don't support hardware build in the last 1,5 years :-(
06:33 azawawi I do not think a splash screen should a show-stopper for a debian upload
06:33 azawawi how about us providing two configuration for Padre?
06:33 Ryan52 that's Alias's idea.
06:33 Ryan52 and he contacted somebody
06:33 Ryan52 so waiting on that person
06:33 Ryan52 but ya, I should just patch out the splash screen or something.
06:33 ribasushi azawawi: it was a show stopper for firefox, so I doubt you're special :)
06:33 Ryan52 ribasushi: ya jawnsy doesn't do Padre, that's mostly me now...
06:33 Ryan52 I do "make" him package all the deps tho ;)
06:34 ribasushi :)
06:36 Ryan52 azawawi: "azawawi sudo cpan Padre
06:36 Ryan52 "
06:36 Ryan52 never "sudo cpan"
06:36 Ryan52 it breaks stuff.
06:36 azawawi Ryan52: i use it on ubuntu :)
06:36 Sewi Ryan52: Nope, sudo cpan is what I do all the time (Ubuntu)
06:36 Ryan52 I know, I used it for a while on Debian too.
06:36 Ryan52 it does screw up permissions tho.
06:37 Sewi Yes, for the .cpan in your homedir.
06:37 Ryan52 http://mail.pm.org/pipermail/pdx-pm-list/2007-November/004781.html
06:37 azawawi Ryan52: then we need to write something about sudo cpan Padre and cpan Padre on ubuntu and Debian
06:37 Ryan52 you should instead set make_install_make_command and mbuild_install_build_command to use sudo
06:37 Ryan52 it's not specific to debian and ubuntu.
06:38 garu Ryan52++ # "sudo cpan" always breaks stuff around here
06:38 Ryan52 it should apply to all sudo-abusing unixes.
06:38 azawawi garu: i see you :)
06:38 garu sudo pip works like a charm, though

06:39 garu thanks guys!

06:39 garu lol
06:40 garu I don't deserve it
06:40 garu but thanks for the thought anyway :)
06:40 garu things are starting to shape up again at work, so I might hang out a bit more around here

06:43 azawawi Ryan52: one last question before sleeping :)
06:44 Sewi garu: Happy Birthday!
06:44 azawawi Ryan52: what's debian's problem with splash-es?
06:44 azawawi Ryan52: if you could provide a ticket or a link so i can follow up on it
06:45 azawawi Ryan52: and if we provide 2-splashes and you delete the other one. Does that solve the problem?
06:47 Sewi azawawi: It does.

07:44 ribasushi ok back to trying to install wxWudgets on debian
07:44 ribasushi I have all the -dev packages I'd need
07:44 ribasushi I still get
07:44 ribasushi configure: error: OpenGL libraries not available
07:44 ribasushi how do I diagnose this
07:52 * Sewi installed Wx via apt-get
07:52 patspam so.. is Padre going to eventually become a wxPerl app framework sorta like Eclipse is for Java?
07:53 Sewi But Ubuntu has a newer version. Maybe you need to give a -- switch to configure?
07:53 ribasushi Sewi: if I do - padre keeps telling me I have 2.7 and it wants 2.8
07:53 Sewi patspam: I hope we won't - Padre is much faster :-) But it does work well also for developing Wx Apps.
07:54 patspam heh yeah I meant in the positive sense
07:54 Sewi patspam: I know :-)
07:55 patspam I'd love to have some sort of InstantCRUD thing for prototyping table-driven wxPerl apps
07:58 Sewi patspam: You're welcome developing or starting it (as a core function or Plugin). :-)
07:59 Alias_ patspam: It's feeling a bit like it might
07:59 patspam awesome
07:59 Alias_ Not for a while though
08:00 Alias_ But I get the feeling it's slowly heading in that direction
08:00 patspam first I need to get comfortable with building wx controls, then I might have a crack at it
08:00 Alias_ We do currently have a dialog generator, but it's not very good
08:00 Alias_ Uses fixed widths etc
08:00 patspam I really liked your blog post about how you go about generating/cleaning up a wx interface
08:01 Alias_ I wish I had a blog that supported images etc
08:01 Alias_ mst has been promising me one
08:01 patspam dang, which blogging system doesn't have images?
08:02 Alias_ use.perl.org
08:02 Alias_ I refuse to become a system administrator just to have a blog
08:02 patspam you can't even put in raw html img tags?
08:03 Alias_ Also, use.perl.org survives basically ever nanny filter
08:03 Alias_ Nope
08:03 Alias_ use.perl is based on slashdot code
08:03 Alias_ So it's got anal anti-haxxor tag filtering
08:03 patspam far out! that's pretty ordinary in 2009
08:03 Alias_ Well, it's a journal for techies, not a blog for writers
08:03 patspam hard to make perl look sexy when you can't include screenshots
08:04 Alias_ It's being used ass backwards really, with use.perl
08:04 Alias_ Trouble is most of the other easy blog places get caught in anti-social networking nanny filters
08:04 patspam ah ok, so only alternative is to self-host
08:04 Alias_ And I prefer a wide audience and no maintenance to wasting my time and not being able to see the blog
08:04 Alias_ No, the alternative is con someone into running something for me :)
08:05 patspam even better!
08:05 patspam so on another topic, what's the advantage of putting Padre::Plugin::WebGUI into the padre svn?
08:06 Alias_ 1. It counts towards the contributor count, commit count, and line count of "Padre" :)
08:06 Alias_ 2. Other people pretty much automatically can make changes to it and help out without the need for special permissions
08:06 Alias_ 3. If we want to make changes to the plugin API, we're able to know it will break your plugin in advance
08:06 Alias_ 4. It's easier for other people to steal good ideas from you
08:07 patspam #3 is especially good
08:07 Hyppolit #3: In "open file" show filenames without extension as well (closed defect) [ http://padre.perlide.org/trac/ticket/3#comment:2 ]
08:07 Alias_ 5. We can watch your new improvements as you add them, not only once you reach release time
08:07 Alias_ 6. Anyone you recruit to help out also automatically gets commit to Padre as a whole
08:07 patspam ok I'm sold!
08:07 Alias_ yay
08:08 Alias_ Welcome to the Creative Anarchy
08:08 patspam I'll drink to that
08:09 patspam have you written the manifesto yet?
08:09 Alias_ We stole the idea from Audrey
08:09 Alias_ Pugs did it first
08:10 Alias_ We're still accumulating experience on how you run a non-experimental project this way :)
08:10 Alias_ Slowly some rules of thumb are emerging
08:11 Alias_ Things like "Everyone can implement buggy shit code on trunk if it adds new features, but you should prevent CHANGING existing designs unless you know what you are doing"
08:11 Alias_ Where to encourage people to just get and in do stuff vs where to hold people back
08:11 Alias_ Spontaneous random features seems to work, spontaneous random refactoring not so much
08:12 patspam do you think it'll still work once Padre has a mainstream/stable user base?
08:12 Alias_ Sure
08:12 Alias_ But mostly because Padre is a developer tool, not a piece of infrastructure
08:12 Alias_ If we were a monitoring system or a CRM or a wiki etc it wouldn't work so well
08:13 Alias_ You noticing development tools when you have then, you notice infrastructure when you don't have thenm
08:13 Alias_ So this apparently riskier approach works much better for development tools, because the trade-off of features vs risk is much more worth it
08:15 patspam I really dig the way it's channeling people's creative urges
08:16 Alias_ yup
08:16 Alias_ It's an economic feedback loop
08:17 Alias_ Special case though, because our entire consumer base is qualified to be contributors
08:18 patspam non-developers can be great contributors on a project too though right? most of them just don't know it
08:18 zuismanm Hi dear ALL... Do some one have some link to working (even simple) example of code - using PPI??? (Especially for analysing caller/callee relations)?
08:19 zuismanm I saw before some time some examples in net - but do not success to find them now...
08:20 zuismanm Another question - some links/examples of use of PPI to analysze few files together (not sinlge file)...
08:21 Alias_ Someone did a cross reference thing

08:21 Alias_ I forget
08:23 Alias_ http://search.cpan.org/~claesjac/CPANXR-0.08/CPANXR.pm
08:23 Alias_ That maybe

17:40 kthakore tsee: the msi link I meant
17:40 kthakore oh no I can't compile here
17:40 kthakore I wanted the zip binaries
17:40 tsee ah, BINARY, sorry.
17:40 tsee Nevemind, then.
17:40 kthakore I need it for a coworker
17:40 kthakore there is no 0.47 msi?
17:41 tsee Don't ask me, I'm just a cpan user.
17:41 kthakore tsee: same here :(
17:41 kthakore tsee: can I package my CPAN install for my coworker?
17:42 tsee Doubtful.
17:42 tsee Why not run "cpan Padre"?
17:43 tsee Or download this and then simply upgrade Padre: http://strawberryperl.com/download/padre-standalone-0.45.msi
17:43 tsee (Hopefully, it doesn't change the prereqs for any XS modules)
17:43 kthakore whats new in 0.47 vs 0.45?
17:43 kthakore they will be doing a lot of refactoring
17:43 kthakore is it better in 0.47?
17:44 tsee Check the changelog.
17:44 kthakore fine ...
17:44 * kthakore does all the work himeself
17:44 tsee (I simply don't know, I'm out of touch)
17:44 kthakore ok
17:44 kthakore dude
17:44 kthakore the changes are insane!
17:44 kthakore how do you guys do that!
17:44 kthakore wow
17:45 kthakore I watsee so I will compile 0.47 from scratch in CPAN
17:45 kthakore how can I make a simple zip file out of it?
17:46 tsee I was suggesting somethign else.
17:46 tsee a) Co-worker installs 0.45 msi.
17:46 tsee b) co-worker upgrades via CPAN
17:46 tsee (the msi comes with a full perl)
17:46 kthakore is that doa ble?
17:46 kthakore oooh
17:47 kthakore but she already has strawberry install
17:48 tsee Then she can just install via CPAN
17:50 kthakore except behind firewall cannot get Wx stuff
17:51 tsee You can put the .tar.gz into the build directory, iirc and it'll pick it up.
17:51 tsee Alien::wxWidgets build directory, that is.
17:51 kthakore ok
17:51 kthakore looks like its manual hack time
17:51 kthakore thanks tsee
17:51 kthakore man looking at the Changelog is just .. wow
17:52 kthakore sewi, azwawi should do SDL
17:52 kthakore :P
17:53 kthakore tsee: another question
17:59 CromeDome joined #padre
18:18 CSJewell Yes, upgrading the 0.45 msi via CPAN is quite doable!
18:19 CSJewell dapatrick: Wx-Perl-ProcessStream 0.20 not passing tests is a known problem and is being worked on. Anybody else have suggestions on what to do for now?
18:34 kthakore um
18:34 kthakore I am gettign this test fail
18:35 kthakore t/92-padre-file.t .................. 29/45 #   Failed test 'HTTP: file size'
18:35 kthakore hopes its not important
18:37 dapatrick CSJewell: Thanks.  I figured that.
18:38 dapatrick CSJewell: I'm just going to force install for now, I think.
18:38 CSJewell kthakore: Another known problem. :)
18:39 kthakore not important then?
18:39 CSJewell I think yours was being discussed yesterday or the day before - look through the IRC log sites that are in the topic.  I don't think it's important, but I'm not sure.
18:40 kthakore fast padre is fast!!!

19:26 Sewi kthakore: Skip the test. The HTTP client in 0.47 doesn't use proxy settings, this is fixed in trunk.
19:26 Sewi kthakore: If possible, please try the trunk version to see if it works...
19:27 kthakore ok Sewi
19:28 kthakore is there a pip I can do please
19:28 kthakore ?
