00:00 nuba solved: it was a permission issue: i ran padre after installing with sudo, which resulted in: drwxr-xr-x 3 root root 4096 2009-10-21 22:17 /home/nuba/.padre/
00:09 nuba how do I report a bug?
00:10 Alias szabgab will unlock registration and let you sign up
00:11 Alias nuba: That's mostly a known bug
00:11 Alias nuba: We've been working to try and get rid of it, but haven't been completely successful
00:11 nuba Alias: not that one above ^ ^
00:11 nuba im getting a segfault when closing the documentation window
00:11 Alias oh
00:12 Alias The problem with permissions is that the test suite is supposed to NOT create stuff in your real home directory
00:12 Alias And one of the test scripts somewhere isn't playing nicely
00:13 nuba i removed ~/.padre completely and im still getting this segfault
00:14 nuba and a quick search hasn't turned up any existing ticket for that
00:15 Alias segfaults should be unusual at this point
00:15 Alias I'm not aware of any (or at least many)
00:18 nuba this is it: http://pastebin.com/m5b156496
00:19 Alias ouchy
00:24 nuba that teaches you not to be a smartass and cheat by reading the documentation! ;)
00:34 Alias hrm
00:35 Alias I helped you with the problem I read first :)
00:35 Alias We aren't here all the time :)
00:41 nuba oh, I dont meant you with that joke above
00:41 nuba i mean this bug teaches you not to use the documentation
00:41 nuba cause every time you do, padre segfaults
00:42 nuba by "you" I mean the user
00:42 Alias ah :)
00:43 SvenDowideit__ mmm, Devel::Leak::Object hates FileHandle (Failed to find super-method for class FileHandle)... so I've changed that die to a warn, and then added another hash so it only prints the warn once
00:43 SvenDowideit__ is this a really bad idea?
00:45 SvenDowideit__ doesn't like CGI either
00:48 Alias Oh, Sven
00:48 Alias I've been collecting feedback on our FOSWiki deployment
00:48 Alias What should I do with it?
00:48 SvenDowideit__ too cool :)
00:48 SvenDowideit__ you can email, post on the wiki or just throw it at me :)
00:48 Alias Where on the wiki (that might be easiest)
00:49 SvenDowideit__ depends if its problems / suggestions
00:49 SvenDowideit__ or if its marketing bonus's
00:50 SvenDowideit__ making a new topic in http://foswiki.org/Development/ is probly the fastest
00:50 SvenDowideit__ then we'll mine it for what we need to do
00:56 Alias Just dump it to my personal page?
00:57 SvenDowideit__ thatll do too
01:19 Alias http://foswiki.org/Main/AdamKennedy
01:19 Alias Done
01:21 Alias As usual, by far the most comments were on a single issue to do with look and feel
01:21 Alias "Too much whitespace"
01:22 SvenDowideit__ grin - woo web2.0y
01:22 Alias There's web 2.0'y, and then there's blatant overuse of real-estate
01:22 Alias You've slipped past web 2.0 into the latter category
01:22 SvenDowideit__ you won't get any argument from me
01:22 CromeDome joined #padre
01:23 Alias Anyways, if you want to point your theme people at my page, there's literally a dozen people that mentioned that here
01:23 SvenDowideit__ I certainly will
01:23 Alias More than half of all people that commented
01:23 SvenDowideit__ can we move parts to the marketing page?
01:24 Alias Do anything you wish with it
01:24 SvenDowideit__ and use a logo ?
01:24 SvenDowideit__ too sweet :) thanks
01:24 Alias uh... dunno about that
01:24 SvenDowideit__ roger - if they want to, i'll get them to contact your people
01:24 Alias yup
01:24 Alias BTW, the critical threshold for whitespace
01:25 Alias "Things that we'd tweaked to not wrap under Twiki now do wrap"
01:25 SvenDowideit__ ah - could they (privatly, if need be) send us the tweaks?
01:25 Alias So if you are approximately as efficient with usable horizontal whitespace as Twiki, you'll be ok
01:25 SvenDowideit__ oh, ok, tweaked content, righto
01:27 Alias yeah
01:28 SvenDowideit__ well, after a small play with Devel::Leak::Object, i guess my day is up and its back to looking after the kiddilies
01:29 SvenDowideit__ thankyou for the feedback - it should help focus our UI people's minds a little  :) as its similar to what the developers prefer, but..
01:30 Alias Basically, we're not using a wiki because we want it to be pretty (although the cleanliness is nice)
01:30 Alias We don't mind packing stuff in a bit more
01:31 Alias If there was an option to toggle-away the user bar, the lavish whitespace wouldn't be a problem probably
01:31 Alias It's the combination of the two that are the problem
01:33 Alias I look some digital shots of the screen layouts
01:33 Alias I wonder where I put those
01:33 Alias Even the default menus wrap
01:33 Alias "Create personal sidebar" consumes two lines

02:47 Ryan52 yay people like us..
02:47 Ryan52 :(
02:49 Ryan52 szabgab: it's passed 1000 voters..
02:59 garu ouch
03:00 garu Ryan52, I guess flame bait happens even inside the Perl community
03:03 cfedde is that a comment from someone "inside the Perl community"?
03:13 garu I don't think the poll was spread outside of it
03:18 cfedde I saw it on reddit today.
03:28 Alias phht
03:28 Alias A year ago it was "You have to stupid to start an editor project"
03:29 Alias Now it's "Slow and difficult to use"
03:29 Alias And yet, the comment is just "it sucks", not "Why the fuck did they bother"
03:30 CSJewell In that case... let's make it a white hole, so that it doesn't suck. :)
03:30 cfedde never read the reviews on opening night.
03:41 garu nuba, registration is open :)
03:42 garu nuba, please let me know when you're done so I can close it... we have a bad spamming problem
03:43 garu Alias, hey it feels like progress to me
03:43 garu first "why the fuck did you bother"
03:43 garu then "slow and difficult to use"
03:43 garu next is "it doesn't do $foo"
03:44 garu first they laugh at you, then they.... oh, you know the rest
03:44 garu :)

03:55 szabgab oh garu did already
03:55 szabgab it is still 6 am here...
03:55 Alias yup
03:55 szabgab and I slept only 4 hours
03:56 Alias I'm on an average of 4.5 for the 5 days of this week
03:56 Alias I'm wasted
03:56 Alias Trying to win competition stuff
03:56 garu tell me about it... last night was only 2h sleep for me
03:56 garu hopefully I'll sleep all over the weekend
03:56 garu Alias, what competition?
03:56 szabgab but you guys are still young and capable :-)
03:57 garu szabgab, right, I forgot you were in your seventies :)
03:59 szabgab Ryan52,  I thought we will reach 1000 voters in 3-4 days only but we reached that in less than 24 hours so I kept it open for some more time
03:59 Alias garu: Three actualy...
03:59 Alias mashupaustralia.gov
04:00 Alias And apps4nsw.nsw.gov.au
04:00 Alias And there's one more I kinda forget
04:01 Ryan52 szabgab: ah
04:02 garu Alias, is it me? neither links resolve
04:02 Ryan52 garu: me neither. probably because we aren't australian enough for them. pfft. :)
04:02 garu found it --> mashupaustralia.org
04:06 Hyppolit #704: Segfault when closing documentation dialog (new defect) [ http://padre.perlide.org/trac/ticket/704 ]
04:06 nuba there it is
04:07 garu nice, thanks for the report
04:07 szabgab crap, I started to get again the "padre is not responsive" window
04:07 szabgab when closing Padre
04:20 szabgab vote count is now on 2950, let me see if it is still growing well
04:21 szabgab and vi has 996 votes
04:24 garu szabgab, what's Padre's rank?
04:24 szabgab 92 votes 3%
04:25 szabgab 9th place
04:25 SvenDowideit__ how many people have commited code to Padre?
04:25 szabgab IMHO skewed upwards
04:25 szabgab ~50
04:26 garu 9th
04:26 SvenDowideit that's a pretty interesting ratio - i guess most of us have voted
04:26 garu that's a little unexpected, isn't it?
04:26 SvenDowideit no-one i talked to knew about really padre
04:26 SvenDowideit really knew about...
04:27 SvenDowideit some had seen a presentation about something, but said it looked rough so they didn't try it
04:27 SvenDowideit and alot of us have been using vi for so long
04:30 garu I thought we'd be just behind the major ones (vim/emacs/komodo/epic)
04:31 szabgab what do you people think about moving http://www.perlmonks.org/?node=Perl%20Development%20Tools  to perlide.org ? (after getting the agreement of the current maintainer)
04:31 szabgab oh I thought we won't be so high :-)
04:31 garu TextMate, UltraEdit and Notepad++ came as a surprise to me
04:32 SvenDowideit i think Perl as a community needs to fix its domains
04:32 garu I thought they'd be kate and gedit
04:32 SvenDowideit there are too many that mean too little
04:32 SvenDowideit garu, are you a non-windows dev?
04:33 garu that obvious, huh? :/
04:33 SvenDowideit the number of people that use perl as a tool at their dayjob far outweighs the non-windows users
04:33 SvenDowideit i think i forgot to tick 'notepad' and 'wordpad'
04:34 SvenDowideit as i regularly use those on windows servers i have to work on (that are not mine)
04:34 garu I think the number of people that user perl as a tool at their dayjob far outweights those that do perl coding for a living
04:34 garu "as" their dayjob, I meant
04:34 SvenDowideit yup
04:34 garu which would explain popularity for those editors
04:35 SvenDowideit which is why strawberry perl is so important, and why portable strawberry with padre installed rocks to much
04:35 garu still, if you think of underlying platform, we can see a lot of windows perl coders around
04:35 garu I really really like this
04:35 garu specially now that microsoft's winter games allows perl along with vbscript and powershell
04:36 szabgab garu actually I think "at" was more correct
04:36 SvenDowideit and yet, i still hate having to use windows :) - i'm very glad windows 7 doesn't suck quite so much
04:36 garu if we can get windows coders in the games
04:36 szabgab if that means they do a little perl too
04:36 szabgab I don't think there are many full time perl developers out there
04:36 szabgab what is that winter game thing ?
04:36 garu szabgab, no no... I meant "I think the number of people that use perl as a tool at their dayjob far outweights those that do perl coding as their dayjob"
04:37 garu it's a free competition, I believe
04:37 szabgab that's right
04:37 garu microsoft poses some problems
04:37 garu people online try to solve them
04:37 garu I think prizes are distributed to winners as well
04:37 szabgab is there any special need there that padre might help solving ?
04:38 garu no idea... as SvenDowideit rightly put, I'm not a windows dev... heck, I haven't touched a windows box in years
04:38 SvenDowideit you lucky bugger :)
04:40 garu szabgab, hmmm... contest site appears to be out and point to http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/scriptcenter/default.aspx
04:42 dams joined #padre
04:42 garu SvenDowideit, except that it doesn't let people look at the source (and change it) I have nothing against windows myself
04:42 SvenDowideit giggle
04:42 SvenDowideit i don't care about the source
04:43 SvenDowideit i have other troubles with it :) I was happily trying out windows 7, and then after 6 weeks, it stopped booting
04:43 garu ouch
04:43 SvenDowideit so i just put debian back on this little quad box, and i was happy for a week
04:44 garu then it stopped booting as well?!
04:44 garu :P
04:44 SvenDowideit then it decided to not run padre anymore, and now i'm back to using gedit
04:44 SvenDowideit don't have time to work out what wxwidgets has done to itself this time :/
04:44 garu :(
04:45 SvenDowideit (i have a sneaking suspicioun it stopped working after i installed virtualbox
04:45 SvenDowideit oh well, time to go again, at least i'm at home :)
04:46 garu :)
04:47 garu szabgab, I like the idea of merging that data into perlide.org, btw
04:49 garu to be fair, maybe there should be an individual page for the ones people care enough to... well... to make an individual page about
04:49 garu or not
04:50 garu come to think of it, "good" projects already have their own page
04:50 garu I miss this though -->http://code-and-hacks.blogspot.com/2009/06/stealing-from-padre-for-vim.html
04:51 szabgab what do you mean you miss ?
04:52 garu vim is not an IDE per-se
04:52 garu so I miss a "Perl and Vim" page
04:52 garu a good one, with screenshots, pointers and everything else... like that blog post
04:53 garu I never used any of those helpers, not even when I went 100% vim... maybe if there was an easy enough page about it, I would have
04:53 garu I'm not proposing we do it
04:53 garu just allowing people from those other IDEs to do it, if they want to
04:54 szabgab I am not sure if we move that table to perlide.org we might be asked to add all kinds of info we don't agree to
04:54 garu but external linkage is good enough, it's just an idea
04:54 szabgab or accused of not adding info as want to fight competition :-)
04:54 garu yeah, could be
04:55 garu the table itself feels harmless enough though
04:55 szabgab so I am going to add a list of the tools - the result of the poll
04:55 szabgab with the numbers and some explanation
04:56 szabgab and then we see if we want the rest of this table to be on perlide.org
04:57 szabgab and I was stupid as I should have put the whole poll on the perlide.org website and promote that one not the one on the poll site
04:58 garu live and learn :)
04:59 szabgab that was really stupid as it could have generated quite a nice traffic and linkage to perlide.org ...
04:59 szabgab next time
05:00 garu make it an anual poll :)
05:01 garu hmmm.... microsoft scriptcenter provides several scripting categories, each with a short how-to list. Maybe the nice win32 Perl folks could do their own version, to promote Perl as an more than adequate solution to PowerShell, and even identify eventual shortcomings
05:29 szabgab actually I am thinking of running a longer survey soon with many more questions
05:35 nuba you could try something like webgui's cmsmatrix.org
05:35 nuba where they allow for other people to add features and products to the comparison matrix

06:09 Sewi Alias: May I ask you for a little Wx-tweak on the SessionManager.pm - Dialog?
06:10 Sewi It needs to be a little bit bigger because I had to use some space for a new checkbox
06:11 Alias If it's actually written properly, you should HAVE to "tweak it"
06:11 Alias The sizing should be content-driven
06:11 Alias Also, that size is going to be wrong anyway
06:12 Alias Because it won't take into account the different sizes of Windows, Unix and Mac widgets
06:12 Sewi For Ubuntu, the checkbox is something big...
06:12 Alias So what you really mean is, Alias: Please build me an entirely new interface class?
06:12 Sewi No, just beautify the existing one a little bit :-)
06:12 Alias ... By rewriting it
06:16 Sewi http://surfio.de/privat/sessionmanager.png
06:17 Alias "Internet use policy restricts access to this Web Page at this time. "
06:17 Sewi If rewriting would be easier then getting a bit more height...
06:17 Alias If it's just about getting a bit more height, you do it
06:17 Alias Go find the fixed height number, and make it bigger

06:26 Hyppolit Remaining things from yesterdays change: Auto-Save current session
06:26 Hyppolit trunk/Padre/lib/Padre/Wx/
06:27 Alias It works
06:27 Alias What's the problem, that someone didn't make the centre section optionally scrollable?
06:27 Sewi No, the checkbox is eating up a lot of space from the list
06:28 Alias You know I hate the idea of sessions, right? :)
06:28 Sewi You know I can't live without them, right? :-)
06:29 Alias At some point I need to write an "Open Project"
06:29 Sewi Maybe integrating them into the "project" concept would be better
06:29 Alias Which works out the most important files in a project and opens all of them
06:29 Alias hrm
06:30 Alias We already have a "Close Project" option
06:30 Alias Maybe it could remember that list of files as a session
06:30 Sewi There are people (not me) who mix up all their open files in one Padre instance. For them, at least a "restore last state" is needed.
06:30 Alias I mix up all my open files
06:30 Sewi "most important files in a project" really depends on what you're working on currently
06:30 Alias I've found that "Close Project" and "Close Other Project" solve almost all my problems
06:31 Alias hrm
06:31 Alias So you open the most recent 10 files by modification date?
06:31 Hyppolit svn: r8865 | Sewi++ | http://padre.perlide.org/trac/changeset/8865

07:17 szabgab and we need a "Project" menu item as people keep asking if Padre supports projects
07:18 Alias I was thinking that we could change the "Directory" title
07:18 Alias If we're in project mode, we change it to Project
07:19 szabgab I don't like menu options changing in the background without my actions, too much magic
07:20 Sewi szabgab: Only the title of the "Directory"  tree. It changes it's behaviour inside a project, so show this by changing the title.
07:26 pece joined #padre
07:30 Alias szabgab: Yeah, that idea of mine largely fails
07:30 Alias But I like the idea of the Project vs Directory thing
07:30 Alias Also, I find that I want to ONLY show the tree when it's a project
07:31 Alias I almost never use it as a real directory browser
07:31 Sewi It's worth a preference :-)
07:31 Alias And more often than not, if I open a temp file, Padre hangs while it renders a 800 long list of random temp directories
07:37 Sewi Really worth a background job :-)
07:37 Alias Sure
07:37 Alias But also, what the hell is the point of having a directory browser open most of the time
07:37 Alias I have a gui version control tool for that, personally
07:37 Sewi easy and fast access to files?
07:38 Alias Which files?
07:38 Alias If you aren't inside of a project, what files?
07:38 Sewi Whatever you need.
07:38 Alias The current directory browser is slower and harder than most of the build in OS things :)
07:38 Sewi You're right that most of the time my directory browser is in face a project browser, but not always. Then testing, I usually use files, not a project
08:05 szabgab people who are used to real IDEs expect their version control to be integrated into it
08:06 szabgab not a separate thing
08:06 szabgab same with directory browsing
08:07 Alias Sure, but ours kinda sucks :)
08:08 SvenDowideit raise a task :p
08:09 SvenDowideit on the continuing path of learning - in Devel::Leak::Object, both warn and Car are used - is there a reason not to be using just one of them?
08:09 SvenDowideit (especially as i am already playing in the code there)
08:10 Alias Probably not, already doesn't one spew a stack trace and the other not?
08:11 SvenDowideit the thing that made me look is that there's a die that i've had to replace with a warn, and then i pondered why there's both carp&warn :)
08:12 SvenDowideit i presume that Carp is also replaceable with a subclass, whereas warn not so much
08:18 * SvenDowideit wonders if there is/should be an #svn.ali.as

11:02 rindolf Sewi: a Frenchmen told me that it's holiday for him today. Do you know which one?
11:03 szbalint oct 23rd
11:04 Sewi Sorry, don't know, seems to be a national one
11:24 rindolf szabgab: 23-October
11:24 rindolf szbalint: Oct 23rd is an Americanism.
11:25 rindolf Brits use 23-Oct
11:25 rindolf Which makes much more sense.
11:25 rindolf I also write milliard in English instead of "billion" for 10**9
11:29 szbalint I don't trust anyone who writes their dates in reverse
11:29 szbalint :)
11:29 szbalint yyyy-mm-dd hh:mm:ss is what was intended
11:30 sjn szabgab: editor poll closed already? o.O
11:39 rindolf szbalint: well, Americans tend to say Oct 23rd, 2009
11:39 rindolf Which is kinda like mixed-endian.

14:27 szabgab code?
14:27 Hyppolit code is broken on padre svn
14:28 kthakore szabgab: I was trying to get hyppo_lit on sdl
14:28 kthakore szabgab: as you see it dies
14:28 szabgab teejay, I don't remember, it was days ago and I think not on this machine
14:28 teejay szabgab, oj
14:29 teejay you should have an autodia.out.xml unless you specified a particular filename

14:29 Hyppolit code was broken on padre svn
14:29 Hyppolit code is now not broken on svn
14:29 szabgab kthakore, svn blame it
14:29 teejay so you can open that file in dia
14:29 kthakore szabgab: your irc bot code I mean s broken not padre
14:29 teejay or you can do -z -o filename.png to get it as a nice pretty image

14:38 kthakore Sewi: no problem
14:39 kthakore szabgab: I get nosensical debug out put on Hyppolit_Trunk  fail
14:39 szabgab kthakore, I have not touched Hyppolit for a while
14:39 kthakore ok
14:40 szabgab teejay, I never read docs :-)
14:40 teejay autodia.pl -h then ;)
14:40 szabgab and I thought dia is the windows program
14:40 teejay visio is the 'doze program
14:40 szabgab so I have not even tried to look for it
14:40 szabgab ah
14:40 teejay dia is the f/loss diagram editor
14:41 teejay but it is quite clunky
14:41 teejay visio feels a lot sleeker
14:41 teejay and smoother to use, as does smart-draw
14:41 teejay dia is quite powerful, but doesn't have the effort made to make it less painful to use
14:43 kthakore szabgab: is there an alernative trac irc bot we can use
14:43 kthakore I like to do tis

14:46 szabgab Sewi, could you please look at perlmonks and check if there is the german ad for Padre ?
14:47 Sewi will do
14:51 Sewi I get mostly english ads and didn't see the German Padre ad within the German ones.
14:51 Sewi stop
14:51 Sewi Another refresh got it.
14:52 szabgab the adserver also needs a lot of improvement
14:53 Sewi Ask me again when we released Padre 1.0 :-)
16:48 PerlJam (Padre 1.0)++ I look forward to the day!
17:05 CSJewell dia can, too, be used in Windows. [I know, I've done it!] It just doesn't HAVE to be used there, like Visio does. And yes, it is clunky.
17:11 Sewi PerlJam: Awating your daily commit to help reaching the 1.0 :-)
