01:39 rjbs May I ask a Kate-related question here?
01:39 rjbs Padre uses Kate, right?  Hm, maybe no!  Sorry, I am noise.
01:51 Alias It CAN use Kate
01:51 Alias Or at least, there's a plugin for it perhaps?
01:59 rjbs I decided to just use Text::VimColor.  Kate looks too labor intensive for this right now.

09:36 DHGE hi Padre on win32 is not starting anymore - only the logo is displayed in the task bar
09:36 DHGE my last change was updating PAR to 1.0 - same experience anyone?
09:37 Sewi Which Padre version?
09:37 Sewi hi dhge
09:37 DHGE 0.50
09:38 DHGE latest strawberry
09:42 szabgab yesterday kthakore had some issues - probably unrelated - he restarted padre 15 times till it started to work for him
09:42 szabgab it must be the phase of the moon or something
09:43 szabgab DHGE, try running it from command prompt and see if there is something displayed
09:43 szabgab and try the ultimate windows solution and reboot
09:45 DHGE szabgab: done all this - even finished a force install as I typed here ...
09:45 DHGE nothing on the CL
09:45 DHGE last Friday everything worked, yesterday a CPAN update ...

09:46 szabgab lovely, xhcat crashed
09:48 szabgab DHGE, sorry I am not sure I know how to help
09:48 Sewi DHGE: Sorry for not responding. Please go to c:\strawberry\perl\bin and type "perl padre.pl"
09:48 DHGE szabgab: which PAR do you have installed?
09:49 szabgab none
09:49 szabgab adaik
09:49 Sewi Sorry, "perl padre" without .pl
09:49 szabgab afaik
09:50 DHGE same - a logo on the task bar and a process (now perl instead of wxperl) in the list ...
09:51 DHGE szabgab: how do you make padre.exe then?
09:51 szabgab I don't
09:51 Sewi DHGE: It's a launcher running "wperl padre" :-)
09:51 szabgab we havd dumped the exe generation using par a long time ago
09:52 szabgab until tsee and Alias or someone else can figure out how to do it
09:52 Sewi DHGE: Do you have /had two or more screens?
09:53 DHGE I wanted to finish a W32-heavy (OLE) program yesterday, that also does not run ... I will investigate using scite   ;-)
09:53 DHGE Sewi: only the logo and the splash
09:54 DHGE Scalars leaked: 1    had not seen this in the recent versions ...
09:54 szabgab it is still there
09:54 Sewi It happens from time to time.

11:08 tsee Would anybody be severely offended if I did some minor refactoring of Padre::File?
11:09 Sewi YES!
11:09 Sewi Just kidding :-)
11:09 tsee Mostly just minor things.
11:10 Sewi I'ld like to get it improved, using XS_Accessor and other things, but the subs in Padre::File.pm are sorted alphabetically and located next to their POD documentation and I'ld like to keep this - if possible.
11:10 Sewi This doesn't apply to Padre/File/*.pm
11:11 szabgab Sewi, you should use an editor that can display the pods next to the subroutines even if it is located elsewhere
11:11 Sewi szabgab: Padre could do this?
11:11 szabgab AFAIK not yet :-)
11:12 szabgab but it could
11:12 tsee Like for the stub methods: Returning undef isn't very good. In list context, it's one element and that will evaluate to *true*.
11:12 tsee Hence returning the empty list as false is better.
11:13 Sewi szabgab already teached me about this some time ago :-) I only return undef if it really makes sense at this location.
11:14 szabgab after copying a VirtualBox image of windows from my notebook to the new Quad core desktop I cannot start it I get BSOD
11:14 tsee Ah. Thinko. return; always returns the empty list.
11:15 szabgab I am not sure if it is the move from single core to quad or the fact that it was Ubuntu 9.04 and this is 9.10
11:15 Sewi szabgab: I prefer having POD and sub together, but this is a personal preference. (Sometimes I still use mcedit and it can't do anything like show-together)
11:17 charsbar joined #padre
11:22 szabgab copying a linux virtual image worked out well
11:23 Sewi tsee: Go ahead as you like, my personal preferences shouldn't block Padre's progress.
11:23 tsee Well, I do like pod and code to go together as well.
11:23 Sewi :-)
11:23 tsee It just isn't worth the textual overhead in case of stubs, IMHO.
11:23 tsee And the stubs could as well be:
11:24 tsee use Class::XSAccessor false => [qw/ stub1 stub2 stub3 ... /];
11:24 tsee (Except I just discovered CXSA "false" methods return a false scalar. But that will be fixed RSN.
11:24 Sewi tsee: The File.pm should be usable as a template for new Padre/File/*.pm modules.
11:25 tsee Only if you expect all those modules to implement the full API.
11:25 tsee And then, I think copying from an example implementation is easier. But I'm not a hardliner on that.
11:25 tsee Also, there's a slight inconsistency between how you refer to REGISTER and how you use it. You refer to it as a class method and it's really a function.
11:26 Sewi I expect each module to implement all possible methods, everything else should come from File.pm with fallback values. mtime is hard with ::FTP, for example.
11:26 tsee And TBH, I really, really dislike method (or function) names in all caps. I'd much prefer Padre::File->RegisterType()
11:27 tsee Okay, so the stubs stay.
11:27 tsee No point converting them to something faster if they're never called.
11:27 tsee It's more descriptive, too.
11:28 tsee Anyway. I'm nitpicking.
11:29 Sewi REGISTER was caps to show that it isn't a method, but feel free to change this now, because I currently don't know any plugin using it. The core modules are hard-coded anyway :-)
11:30 Sewi It will be hard to change once someone uses it.
11:32 szabgab if you are already in cleanup mode, tsee if you could clean the mess I create with the various spelling of colourize :-)

13:29 tsee What's the magic number?
13:30 Sewi tsee: It's the result of a perl -le 'print (stat("readonlyfile"))[2];' :-)
13:30 tsee Interesting.
13:31 tsee Would be more instructive in octal notation :)
13:31 Sewi Don't know how it's calculated but though it would be a better default than undef - if anybody should use it :)
13:32 tsee It's some file type stuff + the actual perms
13:32 Sewi Sure it is. Would be good to know how to calculate it for the ::HTTP, ::FTP and ::SSH - modules...
13:33 tsee Essentially $mode & 0x7777 should be the perms.
13:33 tsee The file type stuff seems non-portable.
13:33 tsee I mean... stickyness... As cool as it is...
13:33 Sewi I think there is a ->readonly method which would be ok for most use cases :-)
13:34 tsee I'll add some docs to Padre::File.

15:20 kthakore hi folks
15:20 kthakore szabgab: hi?
15:20 kthakore szabgab: if I want to do a plugin for this
15:20 kthakore http://vimeo.com/7405114
15:20 kthakore szabgab: how do I read and write to the text area?
15:21 szabgab do you mean the editor part ?
15:21 kthakore szabgab: yes I would like something like this for MarkUp languaes
15:21 kthakore =h1*$4=h2
15:22 kthakore which will be converted to
15:22 kthakore =head1 and 4 =head2
15:22 kthakore when I press enter
15:22 kthakore how do I do that?
15:22 kthakore oops
15:22 kthakore =h1=h2*$4
15:23 kthakore szabgab: look at video
15:23 szabgab see text_get in Padre::Document
15:23 kthakore ok
15:23 kthakore then regex to parse?
15:23 kthakore is this a regular language though?
15:23 kthakore I think so
15:24 kthakore (1)-=h1->(2)-$mult->(2)-=h2->(3) so on
15:24 kthakore right?
15:25 kthakore szabgab: is this a good candidate for core feature?
15:25 szabgab first try: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=soyBUDgEnC8   but the fonts are too small
15:26 kthakore szabgab: no youtube here :(
15:26 kthakore oh wait
15:26 kthakore I got ipone
15:29 kthakore great :( can't open on iphone
15:29 kthakore oh well
15:30 kthakore szabgab: so this is already done?
15:30 szabgab I have not checked yours yet, wait
15:31 szabgab ah the zen coding thing, I saw that already
15:31 Sewi kthakore: There is a autcompletion for new methods in Padre/Document/Perl.pm, it may be a good place to start...
15:32 szabgab This is for html right ?
15:32 szabgab and css
15:32 kthakore szabgab: I think so
15:32 kthakore szabgab: I would like this for pod and yaml
15:32 szabgab so maybe it should go into the html plugin
15:32 szabgab ic
15:32 kthakore no ...
15:32 szabgab bbl
15:32 kthakore not HT_crap_ML
15:33 kthakore for yaml it would be nice to do this
15:33 kthakore Sewi: %@*4
15:33 kthakore Sewi: that is a hash with 4 arrays
15:33 kthakore or
15:33 kthakore %*4$*2
15:33 kthakore Sewi: or 4 hases with 2 scalar key and value in it
15:33 kthakore Sewi: ya know what I say?
15:34 kthakore Sewi: smart autocomplete
15:34 Sewi sure, add it :-)
15:34 kthakore thats what I should call it
15:34 kthakore the ticket?
15:34 kthakore smart autocomplete ?
15:34 kthakore for mark up languages
15:34 Sewi sure, why not.
15:34 kthakore ok
15:34 Sewi Add a Document::HTML if there is none.
15:34 szabgab it looks cool but I have no idea how useful it really is
15:35 Sewi szabgab: me too.
15:35 kthakore szabgab: it would speed up writing retard markup languages
15:35 kthakore that is why I love YAML barely any mark uo
15:35 kthakore s/uo/up
15:36 kthakore szabgab: Sewi: the other feature with this is smart tabing
15:36 kthakore almost vim like
15:36 kthakore so if you do
15:36 kthakore =h1=h2*5
15:37 kthakore it brings the cursor =head1* (* is where cursor is)
15:37 kthakore then you write and TAB
15:37 Sewi what about binding this to a hotkey?
15:37 kthakore then it goes to =head2*
15:37 szabgab I think better to start adding it as a plugin
15:37 kthakore Sewi: will that work?
15:37 kthakore szabgab: ok
15:37 szabgab and later we might move it in the core
15:37 kthakore ok
15:38 kthakore I have to come up with better ticket specs for this plugin
15:38 kthakore thanks I will do it later when I done doing this 500 line long pod file :P
15:38 Sewi kthakore: Sure, press F7 to get a popup window with a text input line and a textarea. The cursor is in the text input line and typing there shows an example of the output in the textarea. ENTER/RETURN inserts this into the editor window.
15:39 Sewi F7 is a sample
15:40 kthakore szabgab: I figured out why the stupid min/max is occurign
15:40 kthakore szabgab: if you close padre with outline window open

16:22 tsee Does anyone have any prior exposure to the SSH modules for Perl?
16:22 tsee I.e. Net::SSH Net::SSH2 Net::SSH::Expect Net::SSH::Perl?
16:23 Sewi tsee: You're going to create the Padre::File::SSH ?
16:23 tsee Sewi: Well, I'll start.
16:24 tsee Got as far as connecting, but authentication with Net::SSH::Perl fails with my public key setup.
16:24 tsee Google produces quite a few hits on the error message, but no solution.
16:24 Sewi Please add a config option to run a command (line) after login but before any file operation (e.g. su devuser)
16:24 Sewi Sorry, never tried this
16:25 tsee Umm, I am offering ssh://user@host:file
16:26 tsee Scaling all the way up to ssh://user:passsword@host:port:file
16:26 Sewi Sure, but the devuser might not be able to login. Common setup in the last company where I did development. Every developer had a login and there was one user (locked, no login possible) who owned the common files and was Apache SuexecUser.
16:27 tsee Well. You're free to add that feature to your liking. :)
16:27 Sewi Maybe someone wants to run "cd dev_basedir"
16:27 Sewi :-)
16:27 tsee Umm. No. That really screws up restfulness of urls.
16:28 tsee I'll check in my stub plugin (based on your ::FTP) as soon as I get the damn login to work without typing my password in cleartext.
16:28 Sewi Not really. All dev projects are in ~/dev.
16:28 Sewi Have fun :-)
16:30 daxim ssh:// is wrong for files
16:30 daxim that's called fish://
16:30 daxim ssh:// denotes shell sessions
16:30 daxim and before you reinvent the wheel in padre for each protocol, invest some research into cross-platform VFS
16:31 Sewi daxim: This is what Padre::File::* does.
16:31 Sewi SSH uses actually a shell session, you're free to create Padre::File::FiSH
16:33 tsee CSJewell, do you remember which Net::SSH* module worked on windows/strawberry?
16:34 garu guys, do we have a page showing the current state of Padre packages for distros? Like what's the current packaged version for fedora, mandriva and debian/ubuntu? Currently I see it only for Windows
16:35 kthakore Sewi: ok ...
16:35 daxim I've looked, Padre::File::* does in fact reinvent the wheel
16:35 daxim what point are you trying to make?
16:36 tsee daxim: Feel free to jump in and fix it.
16:37 tsee Or just write up a plan/details on how others could, in principle, fix it.
16:38 szabgab daxim, which wheel ?
16:38 daxim vfs
16:38 szabgab works on windows ?
16:39 daxim that's an abstract concept, works on windows is implementation dependent
16:39 patspam joined #padre
16:39 Sewi daxim: Padre::File should provide access to something which is OS independent and not locally mounted (not accessible by foreign programs).
16:41 szabgab if there is a free implementation for windows that is easy to install then we can use that
16:41 szabgab daxim, could you check it please ?
16:44 kthakore garu: that would be nice to have indeed

16:46 garu I know jq maintains mandriva's, so I take it to be in 0.50
16:46 garu but I have no idea about others
16:47 garu I'm running a "good and bad about your IDE" thread in Rio Perl Mongers' mailing list (in pt_BR, sorry), and got a reply saying Padre was hard to install
16:48 szabgab it is indeed still hard to install on linux and mac
16:48 szabgab but it will change with time
16:48 szabgab ubuntu 9.10 has 0.42 in it
16:50 garu that's old :(
16:50 garu szabgab, who's maintaining it? is there any way we can work something out to make it more automatic
16:50 garu ?
16:51 szabgab http://padre.perlide.org/trac/wiki/Download    and   http://padre.perlide.org/trac/wiki/Distribution
16:52 szabgab AFAIK it is the most up to date you could get given they had their code freeze 2 month ago or so
16:53 szabgab the distros will be always out of date - if we can keep releasing Padre - but it is a good and easy way to install a stable(ish) version of Padre

17:38 garu because there is no moose syntax highlight? or maybe you're using scintilla instead of ppi

17:50 rbuels in #bioperl just now, there's some guy trying to write a little desktop app
17:50 rbuels what toolkit should i tell him to use?
17:50 rbuels he's very newb
18:12 garu rbuels, wx from the ground up is a little mean for newbies... maybe gtk with glade? or, if it's windows only, "The GUI Loft" appears to have a visual-basic like interface (though I've never used any of those)
18:14 garu guys, is my Padre broken or did we took away Session support?
18:14 garu can't find save/restore session anywhere
18:15 szabgab garu,   it is a feature that needs to be enabled
18:15 szabgab and I think it does not have a gui yet
18:15 szabgab close padre and check the config.yml
18:15 garu but it worked beautifully before
18:15 * garu looks
18:17 garu hmm... my $HOME/.padre/config.yml points to my system version, not the svn one
18:20 szabgab in padre check the about box
18:21 szabgab it should tell you where is the config file
18:29 garu right, found it
18:30 garu awesome, changed "func_session" from 0 to 1 and it came back, thanks :)

19:08 Sewi garu: actually it is enabled by default, but it could have been disabled by a Preferences.pm bug in the past.
19:09 garu I see
19:09 garu how about the find bar in the bottom of the editor?
19:09 garu I can't find it either
19:09 garu (but I haven't looked in config.yml yet)
19:09 Sewi Press F4
19:11 Sewi garu: Set func_config to 1 to get the GUI configuration for the functions
19:13 garu ha!

20:22 rindolf szabgab: I don't hear you very well there.
20:24 Sewi It's releaseable, but could be improved.
20:24 rindolf szabgab: but nice screencast
20:40 El_Che if there are some padre/perl people in Amsterdam the week op the 7th december, it would be great to share some beers (there on a training week)
20:41 El_Che maybe not sharing :)
20:41 El_Che I'll buy a beer, sounds more like it
20:41 El_Che :)
21:29 szabgab I think this version is a bit better: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s5akQpTvtzM
21:30 El_Che the sound is terrible
21:30 El_Che it sounds as you are too close to the microphone
21:30 El_Che the other sounds ok
21:32 szabgab crap,
21:34 szabgab but the video is better I think as the letters are clearer
21:34 szabgab maybe  someone can help me how to make the video look better?
21:35 szabgab I am recoring it with recordmydesktop that generates an ogv file
21:35 szabgab and then:
21:35 El_Che mm, I am asked to login now when I click on your fist link
21:35 szabgab mencoder -idx out.ogv -ovc lavc -oac mp3lame -o  out.avi
21:35 szabgab I made the first one private
21:35 El_Che is the sound ok on the original recording?
21:36 szabgab I think it is the same
21:36 Sewi Sorry, none of my multimedia specialists is online :-(
21:36 szabgab and it is noisy a bit but I can understand myself :-)
21:36 El_Che In a previous life I had a band. It sounds as when you sing to close to the microphone
21:37 El_Che p's and s's sound distorted
21:37 Sewi The sound is a little bit quietly
21:37 szabgab yes it is very close, I am using a headphone
21:37 szabgab I made the fist video public again
21:37 szabgab so you can compare
21:38 El_Che sound is fine on the first
21:38 szabgab El_Che, you see if I move the mic away then Sewi won't hear anything :-)
21:38 El_Che hehe
21:38 El_Che the chars are readable on the first
21:38 szabgab are they ?
21:38 El_Che still, you are too close to the mic on the first too
21:39 El_Che S's en p's
21:39 El_Che however, not distorted
21:39 szabgab so is the first better ?
21:40 El_Che for me: clearly
21:40 szabgab Sewi, ?
21:40 ejb joined #padre
21:40 El_Che the second in unhearable here
21:40 Sewi Checking the second...
21:40 El_Che you should open an equalizer when testing
21:40 El_Che on the second you are 90% of the time on the red levels
21:41 Sewi s5akQpTvtzM has much better pictures and a louder sound with bad quality
21:42 szabgab maybe I just go to sleep now and try recording again tomorow in the morning
21:42 El_Che how do you record?
21:43 szabgab with recordmydesktop
21:43 El_Che also the soun
21:43 El_Che d
21:43 El_Che ?
21:43 szabgab yes
21:44 El_Che mm
21:44 El_Che audacity has recording levels to see if you are in the red
21:45 szabgab I should somehow resize the window so youtube won't distort the video so much
21:45 El_Che just an idea: run the recording with no sound voice-over the sound with audacityN
21:45 szabgab another time maybe ;-)
21:46 szabgab now I am off to sleep
21:46 El_Che hehe
21:46 szabgab night &
21:46 El_Che bye
