00:09 submersible morning australiens
00:10 waxhead hey sub
00:10 waxhead got much rain up your way?
00:11 submersible last night was awash
00:11 kthakore submersible: I got a new supa hard game for you!
00:12 submersible uh-oh!
00:12 kthakore submersible: http://yapgh.blogspot.com/
00:12 submersible still have not started writing anti-pacman
00:12 kthakore submersible: first post
00:12 kthakore Alias_: I will allow you to play it too
00:13 kthakore ;)
00:13 waxhead submersible++ on the release of swarm!
00:13 kthakore Sewi: thank you fixing that horrible horrible bug
00:14 kthakore swarm is out?
00:14 kthakore submersible: may I try it?
00:14 submersible released to cpan with the global transport as default
00:14 submersible 0.091 should be stable enough not to destroy your editor
00:14 waxhead submersible, did you add any protection with the run in other editor?
00:15 kthakore submersible: ok
00:15 submersible yes - i renamed the handler to 'sub NOT_accept_runme '
00:15 kthakore submersible: enjoy hard game
00:15 submersible kthakore: still dep chasing

00:17 waxhead oh.. so that's how you do the Build stuff?
00:17 teejay joined #padre
00:17 waxhead I had to do it the other day to sort out some failed module installs but hasn't hit a module that uses Build.PL
00:18 waxhead I'm thinking of documenting a Padre install through CPAN alone... since I don't have it installed yet with the hdd upgrade..
00:22 kthakore waxhead: you are not asking me are you?
00:24 waxhead kthakore, nope.. just rambling.. :)
00:27 kthakore waxhead: good
00:28 Sewi kthakore: Long long searching but fixed.
00:28 Sewi We had two tests which even tested that bug :-)
00:28 kthakore oh nice!
00:28 submersible kthakore: missing Physics::Particles
00:28 kthakore Sewi: thanks thanks thanks thanks
00:28 Sewi They failed after it was fixed :-)
00:28 kthakore submersible: it is on cpan
00:28 kthakore Sewi: heheh
00:29 kthakore Sewi: that means they are working
00:29 kthakore in REVERSE LAND!
00:29 Sewi kthakore: So it wasn't a bug - we're all just living on the wrong side of the mirror :-)
00:30 * Sewi going to sleep
00:30 kthakore Sewi: nice
00:30 submersible kthakore: very cool
00:30 Sewi Good morning Asia & Australia, good night Europe :-)
00:30 submersible that's sort of what I imagined the swarm-verse plot might look like
00:31 submersible users / services/ resources orbiting each other
00:32 kthakore submersible: oh nice
00:32 kthakore submersible: except don't use Physics::Particles
00:32 kthakore way to slow after 5 particles on a old enoguh computer
00:32 kthakore submersible: it O(n^3)
00:33 kthakore submersible: also click the balls to win
00:34 submersible i believe Physics::Particles tries to be 'correct'
00:35 kthakore yeah
00:35 kthakore it does
00:36 kthakore and it loops through the particles wierd
00:36 kthakore foreach galore land
00:36 kthakore I am thinking for looking for main areas in profiler
00:36 kthakore by nytprof won't tell me what is slow in that modules
00:36 kthakore module
00:37 kthakore that whole module can be easily made XS
00:38 LeK bye
00:38 kthakore LeK: bye
00:39 kthakore submersible: is there a swarm server or what ever to test this with?
00:41 submersible yeah -swarm.perlide.org is hard coded in right now
00:43 submersible i just kicked the server since it was dead again

08:03 azawawi waxhead: win or *nix?
08:03 waxhead I just finished installing Wx and Alien::wxWidgets and had to "look" to finish it off...
08:03 waxhead *nix
08:03 azawawi waxhead: sudo cpan Padre ?
08:03 waxhead I'm documenting it.. sort of...
08:04 azawawi waxhead: ah , i see
08:04 waxhead nope.. I knew it needed Wx,s o installed that first..
08:04 azawawi waxhead: so Padre fails the first time right because of Wx and A:W?
08:05 waxhead azawawi, it's a chance to have some "deeper" level of "cpan shell use" too..
08:05 azawawi waxhead: cpan has a build folder which is cleans when it gets above xx MB
08:05 waxhead azawawi, not really sure about what Padre fails on first...
08:05 azawawi waxhead: any output that i can look at?
08:06 waxhead azawawi, ok.. then it's fine to look and build and then ignore when make install works?
08:06 azawawi let me see

08:06 waxhead azawawi, thanks.. just checking is all...
08:06 azawawi waxhead: if it installs, then you can continue
08:06 waxhead it's going into the blog...
08:07 azawawi waxhead: but not forcing it ofcourse... right?
08:07 waxhead will point to it when I get to the end..
08:07 waxhead it's very informal and lose in language... but it's to show Padre being installed through cpan and what you can do to get it completed...
08:07 waxhead azawawi, no forcing being done at all
08:08 azawawi cool
08:08 waxhead it must install 'cleanly', which should be a matter of meetting dependancies

09:27 mmanso Hi there...
09:28 mmanso I've been planning a new desktop application and I thought I should stay away from Perl until I saw Padre...
09:28 waxhead mmanso, surprised?  :)
09:28 mmanso I beliave it uses the Wx library for the UI, right?
09:28 waxhead correct
09:28 waxhead wxPerl
09:28 mmanso Not surprised... Perl was, and it is, my language of choice :)
09:29 mmanso How do you guys design the UI? all code based? I've been playing around (for fun) with projects like Flex, Lazarus, even VB.NET and one of the great things I see on them is the easiness on designing the UI.
09:29 waxhead mmanso, thought you might have figured Perl and GUI was too slow..
09:30 mmanso wxGlade os wxWidgets are the only solutions for that, right?
09:30 waxhead mmanso, I'd say much of the early work was coded "by hand"...
09:30 waxhead azawawi still does...
09:30 waxhead but there is another way...
09:30 mmanso I always thought that being based on Moose could cause some of that "slowness"... I might be wrong.
09:30 mmanso which one?
09:31 mmanso Btw, the project I'm planning to work on is a POS (Point of Sale).
09:33 submersible mmanso: I dont think you'll find any moose in padre
09:33 mmanso I thought it was used... any generic oppinion about the slowness? :)
09:34 waxhead mmanso, check this out.. Alias does a lot of Padre code.. he wrote up a blog on what he does with wxGlade: http://use.perl.org/~Alias/journal/39642
09:34 waxhead mmanso, slowness of what?
09:34 azawawi submersible: i wonder why :)
09:34 waxhead moose or Padre?
09:35 mmanso waxhead refered that Padre and GUI was too slow, I was trying to figure out why.
09:35 waxhead no.. the misconception that perl and GUI is slow...
09:35 waxhead not that Padre is slow..
09:35 waxhead it's not...
09:35 waxhead which surprises some..
09:35 mmanso Ah!
09:36 mmanso Sorry, my english cought me :)
09:36 mmanso Beliaving in that concept made me think and decide that the way to go for me should be Perl
09:36 mmanso 1) I need multi-plaform
09:36 mmanso 2) I know the language for many years now
09:36 mmanso 3) I've other projects and a team member who also does
09:37 mmanso so, it makes sense (I guess) :)
09:37 azawawi mmanso: wx+perl is cool. The thing is that you have to depend on the wxwidgets C++ documentation which is sometimes not correct for wxperl.
09:37 azawawi mmanso: some methods are documented in C++ but then you wont find it in wxperl
09:38 waxhead but I think it gets better a more work is done on Wx
09:38 * waxhead is nearly back with Padre and trunk!
09:38 mmanso Two years ago I've worked on a small desktop app in wxPerl and I remember, at that time, I had to rely on wxPython docs in order to find more info on the wxPerl side... is that still in the same stage?
09:39 azawawi mmanso: yeah i think there was an effort to fix that but i do not see any docs till now
09:39 submersible mmanso: the moose compile time hit can be pretty brutal. it's runtime performance has improved vastly over time
09:40 mmanso submersible: yes, I beliave on that because I've been following blogs and such... I neve had a change to start a new project yet but, when I does, I'll use it.
09:40 azawawi mmanso: i had a TODO to add wxwidgets indexing to Padre's F2 search... i started by writing a small wxwidget html indexer and then i discovered that the original source was latex.
09:41 mmanso don't know if this is right one though... this is because in the POS industry you get a lot of old machines and you should stay as "light" as possible.
09:41 waxhead mmanso, I do the same regarding the wxpython docs...
09:42 mmanso wachead: they're more complete, for sure... I saw somewhere a finance being approved for someone to improve wxperl docs... never heard nothing about that issue again, though
09:43 azawawi submersible: wxwidgets release cycle is ssooooo slow
09:43 waxhead well if nothing else, Mattia is still doing Wx releases.... so that's a good thing.. I guess
09:44 mmanso By now they've all those common controls that an application requires, right? They work of bugfixes and stuff like that?
09:44 azawawi mmanso: cpan Wx::Demo
09:45 azawawi mmanso: and then wxperl_demo
09:46 mmanso Thinking on the IDE side of things, I actually thought on Lazarus... It's opensource, runs multiplaform (you can even create apps for mobile) and it has a great IDE.
09:47 mmanso Problem is that I don't have anyone on our team (including myself) to support something like that... I think overtime will be a problem for me, even if I get someone to work with it.
09:49 mmanso We're a small company with 5 people. 2 in Support, two 9+ years experience in Perl (one of them is mysel) and just hired a new guy that will need to learn Perl also. So, in this scenario, if I do it in lazarus and the guy leaves, I'll have a problem in hands.
09:49 mmanso And based on all that, I'm trying to convince myself of let go the "IDE" issue and go for it with Perl :)
09:50 waxhead well padre runs on windows and linux fine..
09:51 waxhead not sure about mac os though
09:51 mmanso mac isn't an issue for me... never saw a mac being used as a POS :)
09:51 waxhead guess not...
09:51 waxhead never know though
09:51 waxhead what OS are you targeting ?
09:52 pece2 joined #padre
09:53 mmanso linux and win32
09:53 mmanso linux is getting popular on that business
09:53 mmanso but basically those are the two targets
09:55 mmanso well, need to run... Thanks a lot for the help.
09:55 mmanso Perl will be the way to go :)
09:55 waxhead mmanso, no worries.. good luck with the project
09:55 waxhead mmanso, and use Padre...
09:55 mmanso Ok, thanks again
09:55 waxhead mmanso, there's a plugin adam did that works with the wxGlade output
09:55 mmanso for Padre?
09:56 waxhead yep..
09:56 mmanso know the name?
09:56 waxhead I haven't tried it.. and it's not cpan ready, but if we get enough people using it he'll work on it a bit... maybe.. :)
09:56 waxhead mmanso, it's in the svn repo..
09:56 waxhead hang on a tic...
09:56 mmanso thanks!

09:57 waxhead mmanso, http://svn.perlide.org/padre/trunk/Padre-Plugin-wxGlade/
09:57 waxhead so you'd have to use trunk I think.. but then you run the dev.pl -a which will use all plugins....
09:57 waxhead at least that's how I use it at the moment...

11:21 submersible tsee: I've been reading some of the suggestions regarding the DB handles leaking into slave threads..
11:21 tsee Annoying issue.
11:22 tsee I'd try to "fix" it with copious amounts of locking.
11:22 tsee And shutting down the connections before thread spawns.
11:22 tsee Though we might actually be safe if we spawn from the slavedriver.
11:22 submersible annoying - however I wonder other than DESTROY what real chances there are of them having any methods called
11:23 tsee I don't know. I know little about how we use the DBs in the code base.
11:23 tsee But I could imagine that they get used transparently all over the place.
11:23 submersible surely this is the case.
11:24 tsee Hah. One could nuke the DESTROY sub of the class in the sub-threads ;)
11:24 submersible and it appears that there is a padre update lock wrapped around the whole slavedriver/taskmanager init
11:25 tsee The slavedriver init should happen way before that.
11:25 tsee Right after loading Wx.
11:25 tsee BEFORE loading Padre itself.
11:25 pece2 joined #padre
11:25 tsee That's the whole reason it's in a separate module from the TaskManaer
11:25 tsee Maybe I didn't get it right, though.
11:26 submersible I think the locking stuff was going on concurrently on trunk
11:27 submersible OT: how many releases of a cpan module should be considered 'too many' for a 24hr period?
11:27 tsee Arbitrary.
11:27 tsee Just make sure you occasionally clean out the old releases via pause.perl.org -> Delete Files
11:28 submersible yes - I have been doing that w/ the (mostly) broken swarm releases
11:28 tsee It may make sense to keep some, few old versions around if they're widely deployed or mark the end of sort of cycle.
11:28 tsee But I mostly just keep the newest versions around. With some exceptions (PAR)
11:28 tsee Of course, you keep blowing up the backpan, but those who keep backpans do so at their own choice.
11:29 submersible did you see kthakore's latest SDL game? Uses Physics::Particles :)
11:29 tsee He sent me an early version where they were just bouncing :)
11:29 tsee Physics::Particles is, unfortunately, extremely slow.

22:17 Sewi szabgab: I meant DVDs for us as a emergency backup if some preinstalled things fail.
22:18 szabgab ic
22:18 Sewi szabgab: Better having some ubuntu live DVD laying around unused than needing them :-)
22:18 szabgab btw have you managed to find any place for me to stay ?
22:18 szabgab I mean BB
22:18 szabgab or hotel
22:18 Sewi I wrote you the three options left.

22:20 szabgab it is quite a lot of money both flight and hotel and I don't see any income from these yet
22:20 szabgab otoh I'd like to use the rest of my time and energy there to hack on padre or on some other stuff
22:22 Sewi You're coming from Tel Aviv?

22:30 Sewi yes
22:30 tsee Been a long time since I went there. 1995 or so.

22:31 tsee Yep.

22:31 tsee Well, with an ICE, it's reasonably quick.
22:31 szabgab so I we can install in some standardish way
22:31 tsee But quite expensive and impossible to do for just one day.
22:32 tsee szabgab, excuse me for not reading the whole backlog: are you going for sure?
22:32 szabgab almost sure
22:32 szabgab though I just had some second thoughts
22:32 Sewi tsee: Where are you from?
22:33 tsee I was born in Hannover!
22:33 tsee But I live in Karlsruhe.
22:34 Sewi Come back home :-)
22:35 szabgab tsee, maybe you have some perl friends where I could stay in exchange for some late night perl hacking?
22:35 tsee Nope, sorry.
22:35 szabgab :-(
22:36 tsee I have very few German Perl connections...
