04:01 dorkfish where's the repo? i didn't see it linked on the cpan page
04:01 dorkfish i'll give it a try
04:02 CSJewell repo: http://svn.perlide.org/padre/trunk/* (* being the dist name)

04:45 CSJewell It's not about the module, it's about the fact that the tests don't emulate Padre...
04:45 CSJewell It may be that they haven't fixed the bug yet.
04:45 dorkfish ah okay

11:04 Sno|Laptop moin all
11:04 Sno|Laptop as promised, I've tried out if Padre runs on MacOS X/Darwin with pkgsrc
11:05 Sno|Laptop first I needed to patch out the wxPerl invocation - pkgsrc perl already comes with thread support
11:05 Sno|Laptop then, Padre splash screen comes up and following error:
11:05 Sno|Laptop Can't locate object method "select" via package "Padre::DB::HostConfig" at /usr/pkg/lib/perl5/vendor_perl/5.10.0/Padre/Config/Host.pm line 36.
11:05 Sewi Do you want to add this to the howto-page?
11:05 Sewi howto?
11:06 Sno|Laptop first I want to get it running - and need help
11:06 Sno|Laptop when it runs, I will add it to howto
11:07 Sno|Laptop I want to know/understand who adds "select" (must be done by role) to Padre::DB::HostConfig
11:08 Sno|Laptop anyone an idea or know whom to ask?
11:10 Sewi Alias is SQLite-Pro here, it seems that some SQLite error happens
11:10 Sewi Could you checkout trunk and try make test?
11:10 Sno|Laptop ok, Alias_ - I want to ask him some other things, too
11:11 * Alias_ waves
11:11 Alias_ I wouldn't say "pro"
11:11 Alias_ I'm FAR more of a project manager than an expert
11:11 Alias_ Although I wrote the ORM on top of it
11:11 Sno|Laptop sure, but this behaviour was in 0.56, too - do you really assume that -trunk has a fix?
11:11 Sno|Laptop alias, do you have an idea about above described error?
11:12 Alias_ I know if well
11:12 Alias_ it
11:12 Sno|Laptop hmm - is it good or bad :)
11:12 Alias_ It gets added by this
11:12 Alias_ http://svn.ali.as/cpan/trunk/ORLite/lib/ORLite.pm
11:13 Alias_ ... via this
11:13 Alias_ http://svn.ali.as/cpan/trunk/ORLite-Migrate/lib/ORLite/Migrate.pm
11:13 Alias_ ... via this
11:13 Alias_ http://cpansearch.perl.org/src/PLAVEN/Padre-0.57/lib/Padre/DB.pm
11:13 Sno|Laptop do you have an idea how to fix or shall I investigate?
11:13 Alias_ The problem occurs when ORLite::Migrate fails to execute the schema migration patches
11:14 Alias_ Padre's schema changes over time
11:14 Alias_ When it does change, we don't want to destroy your entire database
11:14 Alias_ So each time we change the scheme, we add a script that just makes applies the delta
11:14 Sno|Laptop Padre never runs on the MacOS X laptop of my girl-friend
11:14 Alias_ If you upgrade from 0.56 to 0.57, then there's no schema changes and no patch scripts
11:14 Sewi Alias_: I think it was a first time install
11:14 Alias_ If you move from say 0.40 to 0.57, there might be 3 patches
11:15 Sno|Laptop 0.56 was first time install - and the error occures there, too
11:15 Alias_ If you start for the first time, you are effectively moving from 0.01 to 0.57 and that will mean we run maybe 10-20 patches
11:15 Alias_ If the system calls to run those schema patches fail, then the result is that you have either an empty or a half-finished schema
11:15 Sno|Laptop on NetBSD first install was 0.55 and runs fine ...
11:16 Sno|Laptop ok, half finished schema might be
11:16 Alias_ When ORLite tries to inflate that schema into classes, it only makes a subset of the needed classes
11:16 Sno|Laptop because it took some time to remove all wxPerl calls :)
11:16 Alias_ The error you are seeing probably means that there's no host_config table
11:16 Alias_ That's a pretty big problem, because I added that table in about Padre 0.10
11:16 Alias_ And so THAT means you probably failed to run ALL patches
11:16 Sno|Laptop where resides that database?
11:17 Sewi What about adding a check at Padre start? Or at least catch this error and run a check when something failed?
11:17 Alias_ Sewi: I am absolutely sure I have already added extra code to catch that situation and cause a major and immediate error message
11:17 Alias_ I don't know why it's silently succeeding
11:17 Alias_ or rather
11:17 Alias_ Failing with success, so to speak
11:18 Alias_ Sno: Can you use the Perl debugger ?
11:18 Alias_ You can trace it fairly easily
11:18 Sno|Laptop command line based, yes - but I must went downstairs for it ...
11:18 Alias_ OK, so you want to run this
11:18 Alias_ perl dev.pl -d
11:18 Sno|Laptop so might take awhile to get feedback :)
11:18 Alias_ use ORLite::Migrate;
11:18 Alias_ b ORLite::Migrate::import
11:18 Alias_ c
11:18 Alias_ And then step slowly down until you run the call to IPC::Run3::run3
11:19 Alias_ You SHOULD be hitting thi
11:19 Alias_ Oh wait!
11:19 Alias_ We cloned ORLite::Migrate to a private copy
11:19 Sno|Laptop I remember ...
11:19 Alias_ So replace ORLite:: with Padre::DB::
11:19 Alias_ But otherwise do the same
11:20 Sno|Laptop I can run perl-debugger in auto-trace mode ...
11:20 Sno|Laptop ok
11:20 Sewi Alias_: Maybe dev.pl --fulltrace 2>padre.trace would be enough?
11:21 Alias_ Your immediate problem is probably that we are doing incorrect error handling of the system call
11:21 Sewi It should show the line(s) where the error occours
11:21 Sno|Laptop and when I hit IPC::Run3::run3 - what to look for?
11:21 Alias_ That call probably fails
11:21 Alias_ The question is, why don't we detect that failure
11:21 Alias_ my $exit = system( $perl, "-I$include", $patch, $file );
11:21 Alias_ if ( $exit == -1 ) {
11:21 Alias_ Carp::croak("Migration patch $patch failed, database in unknown state");
11:21 Alias_ } elsif ( $? & 127 ) {
11:21 Alias_ Carp::croak( sprintf( "Child died with signal %d", ( $? & 127 ) ) );
11:21 Alias_ }
11:22 Alias_ That's the code
11:23 Sno|Laptop but this leads me immediately to my other question I want to discuss with e.g. you ...
11:24 Sno|Laptop in a previous customer project we're needing sth. like IPC::Run2/IPC::Run2 ... - but those modules we're bit difficult to use
11:25 Sno|Laptop we created there some modules which used pipe() and fork() and piped the output into buffer-objects (either string or pass-though, filter and combinations ...)
11:26 Sno|Laptop didn't we understand IPC::Run* correctly and was it waste of time or could those modules be helpful on CPAN?
11:39 Alias_ The problem with system()-like stuff is that they almost never work everywhere
11:39 Alias_ Your solution probably doesn't work on Windows
11:39 Alias_ And while it might be a bit interesting, any CPAN module that doesn't support all platforms will only ever see limited usage

19:34 szabgab yesterday I moved the downloadable stand-alone padre files to the Googlecode download server that counts the number of downloads
19:34 szabgab download statistics: 50 downloads / day for Padre stand alone
19:35 szabgab surprisingly high
19:35 szabgab (compare that to 500 / day for Strawberry Perl)
19:50 Sewi Hi szabgab
19:50 szabgab hi Sewi
20:02 kthakore szabgab: neat!
20:02 garu szabgab, how was stand-alone padre built, btw? is there a blog post about it somewhere?
20:02 kthakore hi garu
20:02 szabgab hi garu !
20:03 szabgab the windows version was built by CSJewel
20:03 kthakore garu: CEbIT is in a week
20:03 szabgab it is in the padre repository I think
20:04 szabgab the linux version was built by me, and it is is called Perl-Dist-XL  though it still can only be built by me I think
20:04 garu szabgab, oh, I see
20:05 * garu thought it would be nice showing people how to create stand-alone dists of their perl apps
20:06 szabgab garu, I agree
20:06 szabgab especially I think for windows
20:06 szabgab as the Linux one hardly works
20:07 szabgab and most of the people could actually use PAR
20:07 szabgab only we cannot as Padre runs perl externally even for itself  while upgrading the database

21:59 user_1863 hi
21:59 user_1863 is there a way to check perldoc on  padre
22:01 szabgab for built ins try F2 on the name of the sub
22:01 szabgab for modules try F1 on the name of the module
22:01 szabgab that's I think what we have now
