07:01 Sewi Yes, now working myself to things which came up last week :-) What about you?

07:05 szabgab yeah, flight was ok
07:05 szabgab I could sleep most of it
07:16 Sewi Anybody knows it szabgab's talk is/will be published by LinuxNewMedia?
07:19 szabgab Britta told me it will be

07:24 szabgab dorkfish, yes, the same talk as I gave on FOSDEM
07:24 szabgab except that this time the end was not cut off as they did not have strict time rules
07:25 Sewi the last slide showed "Give a talk on CeBit" instead of "Give a talk on Fosdem" :-)
07:25 Sewi I didn't expect that you could finish it, but the nice openoffice guys donated some minutes of their time, I think :-)
07:27 waxhead hey everyone... I'm going to start the release for 0.58 shortly...
07:27 waxhead it's going to be a  slow one tonight... spent way too much time moving mulch and now can hardly move... little own think...

08:41 danlucraft yep, I'm going to start one today I think. I had something happen in the last release that I *should* have predicted

09:12 bart What is "save Intuition" (ctrl-shift-S)?
09:13 danlucraft bart: is that where it tries to guess the directory and filename based on the class name?
09:14 bart No idea, it's in the File menu right under "Save (ctrl-S)" but I can't find it in the docs
09:15 bart I don't quite dare to test it...
09:28 szabgab I think that's the functionality
09:29 dorkfish that's pretty neat
09:29 dorkfish how do you set the base directory for that?
09:29 Sewi It's project root
09:30 dorkfish padre has project support?
09:30 dorkfish this is news to me
09:30 dorkfish i should read the docs :)
09:30 joerg wperl.exe crashed when i'll close padre :-/
09:31 Sewi Open a ticket :-)
09:31 szabgab dorkfish, we should write the docs :-)
09:31 dorkfish haha
09:31 Sewi dorkfish: Sure, it automatically detects the project root and you could configure project parameters.

09:42 joerg Sewi check ICQ :-D
09:42 joerg and then check my problem :-D
09:43 dorkfish icq?
09:43 dorkfish people still actually use that?
09:44 bart So... is the yellow-on-yellow syntax highlighting problem for command lines in backticks, if you put the cursor on it, a Scintilla bug?

09:46 waxhead done!
09:46 bart or does one actually have control on the actual colors used?
09:46 waxhead just in time... I'm a bit pickled I think...
10:00 Sewi bart: Sure.
10:00 Sewi In the style files, I guess.
10:04 joerg how can i fix it?
10:05 joerg i'll change to padre :(
10:07 bart Okay, I just installed the Kate plugin... the syntax highlighter for Perl is installed, I checked the CPAN messages. Yet I don't see the option to syntax highlight Perl using Kate.
10:07 joerg i'll highlight php...
10:07 joerg perl is still working
10:07 bart (wtf what use is that plugin, then?)
10:08 bart got it! You have to enable it!
10:08 bart joerg: plugins -» plugin manager -» enable Kate
10:08 waxhead oh yeah.. install the plugin via cpan and then go to tools plugin manager to enable it.
10:09 waxhead sometimes you have a plugin installed but don't always want it running ( ie Swarm at the moment ).
10:09 bart IT would be nice if at least there was a message in that respect in the CPAN shell...
10:10 szabgab I think we used to have a message when padre was starting that "new plugins found, do you want to enabled them"
10:10 Sewi We should have an installer within the plugin manager which asks you if you want to enable it  after installing. Anybody likes to create a ticket for this?
10:11 waxhead not me... too effected by the red wine...
10:11 joerg ok KATE is highlighting php correctly
10:11 Sewi Hannover.PM: Sven moved away from hannover. as far as he knows, there was only one meeting, the one at March 1 :-)
10:11 bart But it's a bit lacking for Perl... Almost everything is red.
10:12 bart Maybe you'd like that if you're a vampire...
10:14 joerg double your gun double your fun ... can't run two instances of padre at the same time  :(
10:14 waxhead ok, I'm off..
10:14 waxhead nite all
10:14 bart Oh yes you can.
10:15 joerg how? and the wperl.exe crash with padre... sometimes.. how can i find a errorlog for this?
10:15 bart At least, *I* can. If in Explorer (Windows) you rightclick, open with... and choose Padre, it'll open a new instance.
10:16 bart I4m not convinced that's not a bug. After all, you can open multiple files in one Padre.
10:17 virtualsue joined #padre
10:17 bart Well if you run Padre with perl instead of with wperl, you ought to be seeing error messages in the console...
10:19 bart padre.bat will run with perl.exe...
10:21 bart Hmm: Scalars leaked: 1
10:21 joerg but when i open two project... it easier to switch between the projocts when you got two instances of padre... it's my opinion...
10:22 bart 2 projects, right...
10:22 joerg but it's doesnt work... always open the files in the current session
10:23 bart It doesn't for me. Maybe I'm out of date?
10:23 bart 0.56, which allegedly was a milestone...
10:24 joerg the console trick dosent work
10:24 joerg i've try to open C:\strawberry\perl\bin\padre.exe through cmd.exe
10:25 bart How about C:\strawberry\perl\bin\padre.bat ?
10:25 joerg no error output about wperl.exe
10:26 bart No, wperl.exe disconnects from the console.
10:26 Sewi one-instance-only is a config optin
10:28 joerg okay the windows log has logged the error

10:55 daxim it annoys me too, but not enough to complain about it
11:13 Sewi Hi daxim, you walked through the Padre pods reformatting everything afair?
11:14 daxim yes, but that's a couple of months ago, haven't touched that since
11:14 Sewi No problem, would you like to review the Perl:Staff module on the Padre svn? I'm not that used to write pod :-)
11:14 daxim I noticed at v0.01 :)
11:17 daxim it would be cool to have programmatic access to the data which are now only free-form in POD.  compare with the various Acme::CPANAuthors::*, steal their API
11:17 Sewi Don't count that - that included Cebit-tiered and late-night bonus :-)
11:17 szabgab daxim, when saying crapstain do you mean the bunch of icons on the blog of Sewi?
11:17 daxim yes, that's a fitting word for it :)
11:19 szabgab I love that friendliness :-(
11:20 daxim :D  my good man, take it lightly

12:02 clinton hi all
12:02 clinton does padre have the concept of projects yet?
12:02 Sewi sure
12:03 Sewi auto project detection
12:03 clinton Sewi: does that only work for CPAN-style modules?
12:03 clinton I can't seem to get it to play nicely with my existing application
12:05 clinton also, the syntax checker doesn't seem to take any notice of my -l options in Run parameters
12:06 Sewi Put a empty padre.yml file in your project root dir if it isn't detected.
12:06 clinton ta
12:06 Sewi It's a know syntax checker bug, there is a ticket for it and I remember someone working on it lately.
12:07 joerg ping CSJewell
12:08 clinton ok thanks
12:10 clinton hmm, i've got padre.yml in my project root, but when i do (eg) Git > Diff > Project it says "can't find project root"
12:11 clinton i did of course restart padre after adding padre.yml
12:11 Sewi Never tried the git plugin myself :-)
12:12 Sewi Would you like to look at it? It should use the document->project_dir method, maybe it still uses something else.
12:12 clinton if i get a moment, will do
12:12 Sewi clinton: How did you learn about Padre?
12:12 clinton so what does the existence of padre.yml get me, (excluding the git plugin)
12:13 clinton Sewi: I was at yapc::eu when it was first announced
12:13 clinton tried it every now and again.  usually use eclipse, which has nice subversion integration
12:13 clinton but now that i've switched to git, the egit plugin isn't so hot
12:13 Sewi Padre also has a nice svn plugin  - which works :-)
12:14 clinton and java doesn't know about symlinks, which messes things up quite badly for me
12:14 clinton so wondering if i can switch away from eclipse to padre
12:14 clinton but eclipse has some other nice things, where padre support can be somewhat basic, so not sure
12:15 clinton i'd prefer to use padre, not least of all because i can hack on it
12:15 clinton it dies quite often still, which makes it a bit painful though
12:15 bart clinton? That is you?
12:15 clinton heya bart, it is indeed
12:16 bart I thought you were a hardcore Eclipse fan
12:16 clinton yeah i am/was/in the process of changing
12:16 clinton it does a lot that is good, but is heavy, and now we're no longer using svn, it removes one dependency
12:16 clinton just discovered 'meld' as a diff tool - it is wicked!
12:17 bart git?
12:17 clinton well, it's independent of git, svn etc, but plays nicely
12:17 clinton it's git's preferred diftool
12:18 bart I've been trying out git for almost month or so, now, and I4m slightly disappointed with the poor quality of the diff patches
12:19 clinton really?  i've been merging stuff over the weekend and it is super easy!
12:19 bart yes, except when merges are not so trivial, then it can really mess up.
12:19 bart I'll try meld.
12:22 bart You're running Padre on OpenSUSE, I presume?
12:22 Sewi You could add config options dedicated to the project to padre.yml
12:23 CSJewell joerg: pong?

12:28 joerg ok
12:28 Sewi Joerg: I thought you prefer tutorials for everything :-)
12:28 CSJewell (the area within the small scroll box)
12:28 joerg yeah got it
12:28 bart If people only used MSIE, they could just run the BAT file from the website!   ;-)
12:29 bart CSJewell, is there a way we can check we need the patch? Some module version for example?
12:30 CSJewell Yes. Go to the C:\strawberry\perl\vendor\lib\Alien\wxWidgets directory and do a dir.
12:31 CSJewell If there is a subdirectory with 2_9_0 in the name, you need the patch.
12:31 clinton does padre have any concept of version tracking at the moment, as in automatically showing you what files have changed in the directory tree?
12:31 joerg cc1plus.exe: warning: switch "-fvtable-thunks" is no longer supported
12:31 joerg uh fail...
12:31 clinton possibly even with a quick diff, showing the original version?
12:31 joerg oh sorry, it's goning on :-d
12:32 CSJewell The correct directory name should be msw_2_8_10_uni_gcc_3_4, instead.
12:32 CSJewell joerg: That's a warning, not an error.
12:32 joerg yo, my copy & paste was to fast :)
12:33 bart Uh, I can't find that lib...
12:33 CSJewell bart: There is another trick, also, let me look that up.
12:34 bart I don't have the "vendor" subdir
12:35 CSJewell bart: perl -MAlien::wxWidgets -e"print Alien::wxWidgets->version()" and if the number is 2.9.0, you need the patch.
12:35 CSJewell bart: Capital-H HMMM....
12:35 Sewi If Padre starts at all, try looking at the help->about->info page
12:35 Sewi It shows some wx version numbers
12:35 bart If search for "Alien" and I found I had 2_8_10 so I'm safe
12:36 CSJewell The problem being that you can use the same version of Alien::wxWidgets to build against wxWidgets 2.8.10 and 2.9.0 - but it turns out 2.9.0 is buggy, and it makes Padre crash on exit, at a minimum.
12:37 CSJewell We've added code to Padre's Makefile.PL to detect that fact since I ran into that.
12:39 bart This is weird. version returns 2.008010 but VERSION says 0.45

14:43 Sewi CSJewell2: Do you plan anything like "strawberry perl runtimes" which could easily packed with Perl apps for distribution?
14:48 Steffen Sewi, you mean a shared library of perl, i.e. perl510.dll?
14:49 tsee Hyppolit, trust Steffen
14:49 Hyppolit Consider Steffen trusted
14:52 szabgab Steffen, what happened? why the name change?
14:53 Steffen People ask me what "tsee" means and all I can say is that it means nothing.
14:53 Steffen Whereas my name is my name. Why not go with that?
14:54 Steffen According to some Dutch guy I talked to a long while back, "smueller" reads like a word they use to describe someone who eats too much.
14:54 Steffen Thus that abbreviation got the boot.
14:57 Sewi -)
14:57 Sewi :-)
14:57 szabgab I see, I liked tsee but I'll get used to Steffen as well, if that's what you prefer now
14:57 Steffen Well, it's my name.
14:58 Sewi Steffen: Perl is wonderful for Linux but it's hard to create a distributable App for win. Distributable in terms of "to non-perl-developers"
14:58 bart So you already are used to it.
14:58 Steffen Sewi: You tell me. I maintained PAR for five years.
14:58 Steffen :)
14:58 Sewi :-)
14:59 bart You're not saying PAR on Linux is better than on Windows?
14:59 Sewi I'ld like to run a program which asks for my project root and creates a msi from this which includes Strawberry. Or a .msi with downloads Strawberry on demand.
14:59 Steffen It's the same everywhere, more or less.
14:59 Sewi dmake windist would also be an idea
15:00 Steffen bart, but on Linux, you generally get away without crutches like PAR.
15:00 bart That's what I thought...
15:00 daxim ++ for tsee.  extinguish mundane parental names!
15:01 * bart frowns
15:01 Sewi If PAR could do this or something closer than "download this zip and unpack it in c:\strawberry\applications\ and create a manual start menu link after downloading and installing strawberry", it would be great
15:02 Steffen Sewi, wrong use case. :)
15:03 bart I wish Perl archives could be more like JAR... No unpacking. Just use the archive directly.
15:03 daxim yo dawg I heard u like packaging so I put ur PAR in an MSI so you can unpack packages while u unpack packages
15:04 Steffen bart: There's a branch in the PAR repository that lets you load .pm files from memory (i.e. directly from the .par)
15:04 Steffen But it violates user expectations.
15:04 bart Now that's more like it...
15:04 Steffen AND it can't do shared-libraries-from-memory
15:04 bart Eh, ouch.
15:04 Steffen Which might or might not be conceptually possible.
15:05 Steffen But if so, it's beyond my C-runtime skills and CERTAINLY not portable.
15:05 bart Now if you could use an archive as a filesystem...
15:06 daxim http://code.google.com/p/fuse-zip/
15:07 daxim or any good orthodox filemanager, really

16:10 Steffen That's pretty ancient.
16:10 Steffen Did you build it against a different perl?
16:11 sciurius I'm just typing the commands, so I assume it's the same perl.
16:11 Steffen Anyhow. If PerlApp works well for you, I don't want to put you through this. No need to cut into ActiveStates revenue :)
16:12 sciurius That assumption doesn't need to be true...

18:44 kgish i've installed rakudo with  ~/rakudo/perl6, how can i get padre to find it there?
18:50 szabgab you need to configure the RAKUDO_DIR variable I think
18:51 szabgab or was that RAKUDO_HOME ? I am not sure
18:51 szabgab before launching padre
18:55 kgish error while loading shared libraries: libparrot.so.2.0.0: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
18:59 daxim bart--  completely missed the point
18:59 PerlJam kgish: how did you compile rakudo?
19:00 PerlJam kgish: and is rakudo installed in your path?
19:00 kgish installed the usual perl Makefile.PL etc way
19:00 kgish you mean PATH=
19:01 PerlJam kgish: do you have a parrot install that's different from what you used for rakudo?
19:01 kgish works only if i cd to ~/rakudo directory
19:01 kgish no it's all from the same package
19:05 PerlJam kgish: and you didn't remove the parrot_install dir?
19:06 PerlJam Hmm.  Perhaps you need to set LD_LIBRARY_PATH to include the place where the parrot libs are installed?
19:06 PerlJam I could have sworn that rakudo would automatically look in the parrot_install dir though
19:07 szabgab oh and maybe also PARROT_HOME or DIR (again, memory fails)
19:07 kgish PerlJam, just followed the instructions on the rakudo site verbatum
19:07 szabgab but I have only tried it with a Rakudo installed from its repository and even that was some months ago
19:08 PerlJam The thing is that I don't normally have difficulty running perl6 from padre.  It Just Works.

20:11 PerlJam As long as I'm goofing off at work, I might as well be productive about it  ;)
20:11 kgish i notice that if i choose new... perl6 script, the type is PSGI
20:12 kgish with the red sntax error bar at the line with use v6;
20:12 PerlJam when I do that I get a type of PIR
20:12 kgish sorry PIR
20:13 PerlJam Hrm.
20:13 PerlJam there's at least one bug there.
20:13 kgish now if i select document type as perl 6, the red bar disappears but cannot run because no execution mode defined for this document
20:13 kgish am i using the right version of padre?
20:13 PerlJam when I change the file (without saving) it changes the file type to PSGI
20:13 kgish and the perl6 plugin?
20:14 kgish oh yeah, so that's how it magically turns into PSGI
20:14 kgish where is the execution mode error coming from then?
20:17 PerlJam This padre installation is taking longer than I remember.
20:23 PerlJam I guess an "empty" ubuntu box really is empty.  (still installing padre prereq modules)
20:24 PerlJam the good news is that it's all automated :)
20:24 PerlJam I'm just watching the screen scroll, waiting for it to be done
20:29 PerlJam ah, but the bad news is that it wasn't  really installing because I hadn't quite configured cpan. :(
20:31 bart joined #padre
20:31 bart So, what is PIR? I don't use Perl6, but my normal Perl scripts are displayed as type "PIR" too
20:31 PerlJam PIR == Parrot Intermediate Representation
20:31 kgish PIR is for parrot
20:32 PerlJam it's like a high-level assembly language.
20:32 bart WTF
20:32 bart Why does a default Padre, no Perl6 in sight, mistake Perl scripts for PIR files??
20:32 PerlJam The guesser is severely broken if it's picking PIR for normal perl scripts.
20:32 PerlJam Alias_: wow ... you must really like typing "foreach"  :)
20:33 bart My scripts even have a shebang line.
20:34 bart Wait a minute, it's not that simple.
20:34 bart I think "PIR" is a default
20:35 PerlJam bart: that in itself (if true) is severly broken.
20:35 PerlJam padre is a *perl* editor.  If anything, the default should be "Perl 5"
20:35 bart When I open a Perl script in Padre, syntax highlighting works, but the "view document as" menu says "PIR".
20:36 bart However, if I switch that to Perl5, the syntax highlighting doesn't change, so it likely IS taken as Perl5
20:36 bart and if I switch back to "PIR", syntax highlighting is gone!
20:37 bart So my guess is that the first display on the menu is wrong. Probably uninitialized.
20:37 PerlJam perhaps it's just a display bug?  The correct mimetype is chosen (Perl 5), but the wrong one is displayed as selected in the menu
20:39 bart That's the impression I get, yes.
20:46 PerlJam kgish: okay, this is taking far longer than I thought it would, so I'm going to have to put it off until later.  If you've set RAKUDO_HOME correctly it should work AFAICT right now, so I don't know what's going on.
20:47 kgish RAKUDO_HOME or RAKUDO_DIR?
20:49 PerlJam sorry, RAKUDO_DIR

22:28 Karl hi
22:29 Karl I know it's a bit repetitive, but is there somebody here to test this : http://padre.perlide.org/trac/ticket/875 ?
22:31 Sewi Did you check it?
22:32 Karl it's my patch
22:32 Sewi Yes, but did you check if it works?
22:32 Karl usually when you think you have a patch, it's because it works for you, no ?
22:33 Sewi Oh, I wish it would be this way :-) But I'll treat your answer as a "yes"

23:05 Karl Hmm, how do I use my new svn high powers ? login, password ?
23:11 Karl the gnome keyring was messing up. I removed it rm ~/.gnome2/keyrings/default.keyring
23:12 Karl then typed my Trac password for the commit, and then it seems to hang forever
23:13 Karl I do this in a virtualbox, and I know that cause some network problems, because the host can not be resolved
23:13 Karl can it be linked ?
