| 11:01 |
|

hahaha.. true geekness |
| 11:01 |
|
waxhead |
i've read plenty of good things about the n900... |
| 11:01 |
|
szabgab |
0.59 installed fine on my ubuntu |
| 11:02 |
|
waxhead |
the 3g isn't supported for the main carried here in .au though. |
| 11:02 |
|
waxhead |
release it then? |
| 11:02 |
|
szabgab |
yes, go ahead |
| 11:02 |
|
szbalint |
The only thing I don't like is the ~24-48h battery life depending on use, however that's a smartphone problem. I'm just not used to it since my previous phone wasn't one and it lasted 1-2 weeks |
| 11:02 |
|
waxhead |
szabgab, I'm still thinking about tagging it 'stablish' and on the way to being stable... it still exits with running thread errors... |
| 11:03 |
|
szbalint |
but I can live with putting it on the charger :) |
| 11:03 |
|
waxhead |
szbalint, jeezz... 1.2weeks.... yeah, the functionality comes at a cost... but not a major one if you can get a full day... it's a pain if your phone dies during the day though |
| 11:03 |
|
szabgab |
I just saw a wireless charger for iphone... |
| 11:04 |
|
waxhead |
I have a bridge too if you want to buy one of those.. :) |
| 11:04 |
|
szbalint |
yeah, it must be one of those $999 apps from the store |
| 11:04 |
|
szbalint |
damn the store, (apt-get)++ |
| 11:05 |
|
waxhead |
oh.. should we delete the old versions of padre in my directory on cpan? |
| 11:06 |
|
Sewi |
waxhead: 0.56 was stable... keeping 0.55 should be enough? |
| 11:08 |
|
szabgab |
keep the "stable one" |
| 11:08 |
|
szabgab |
and a few others |
| 11:08 |
|
szabgab |
as it turns out the problem of CPAN is not the size as one would have though but the number of files |
| 11:09 |
|
szabgab |
so keeping a few versions of a large distro is less of a problem than keeping many versions of a small distro |
| 11:09 |
|
waxhead |
ok... I'll just keep them there and start removing a version for every new one after this... |
| 11:09 |
|
waxhead |
ok.. that's done.. just need to do up the release announcement... |
| 11:10 |
|

waxhead, our last "stable" version was 0.56, right ? |
| 11:48 |
|
waxhead |
szabgab, yep.. 57 and 58 were clearly marked as unstable.. in terms of the relelase announcement and in the changes file |
| 11:48 |
|
waxhead |
I guess we are now stable, but with some rough edges |
| 11:50 |
|
szabgab |
so I recommended 0.56 for Debian inclusion |
| 11:50 |
|

szabgab, I don't see that we were in a truely unstable state.. ie eat your code unstable, but we did have some issues in 0.57 and Adam did a great job figuring things out and making this release less problematic. |
| 11:52 |
|
waxhead |
it will be interesting to see how he goes iwth the task changes he's working on in his branch |

What about adding a standalone to Debian instead of the Perl module? |
| 11:54 |
|
szabgab |
what do you mean Sewi ? |
| 11:55 |
|
daxim |
holy shit, a keybinding editor! |
| 11:56 |
|
waxhead |
daxim, you haven't noticed azawawi's commits? |
| 11:56 |
|
Sewi |
Debian clearly has a problem with versions and Padre requires very new versions of many dependencies. If we'd add the files to /usr/share/Padre and use a /usr/bin/padre start script, Padre could have it's dependencies while Debian system perl could use old versions. |
| 11:58 |
|
szabgab |
I'd rather not get into that |
| 11:58 |
|
szabgab |
let the Debian maintainers figure out the best way to package Perl on Debian, they are the experts |

I can save you the trouble: they aren't going to package it officially unless development speed goes way down |
| 12:00 |
|
daxim |
your best bet is to have a friendly debian user/packager supply an unofficial repo |
| 12:02 |
|
waxhead |
wasn't someone saying the build scripts for a debian package of padre could get sorted out and if so, we could build .deb's and host it on perlide.org couldn't we? |
| 12:02 |
|
daxim |
exactly |
| 12:02 |
|
waxhead |
hmm I think it was in the dev list.. zenog mentioned it |
| 12:10 |
|
Steffen |
Sewi: Just a quick note. Your suggestion runs afoul of the debian policy not to package the same code multiple times. They really mean it. |

szabgab: You wrote on the mailing list that the splash screen is under a non-free license. Couldn't we contact the copyright holder and ask for a free license for the picture? |
| 12:50 |
|
szabgab |
I sent her e-mails several times but have not received any reply |
| 12:50 |
|
szabgab |
you are welcome to try again |
| 12:52 |
|
zenog |
hm okay |
| 12:55 |
|
szabgab |
Sewi, as I recall you wanted to work on the usage data collection of Padre |
| 12:55 |
|
szabgab |
so maybe you can give it a try now |
| 12:57 |
|
marcela |
szabgab: hello, do you still maintain Task-Padre-Plugin-Deps? |
| 12:57 |
|
zenog |
szabgab: Another thing we could try - release every version of Padre with a new butterfly splash screen. |
| 12:57 |
|
szabgab |
marcela, that does not seem to be updated nowdays |
| 12:57 |
|
zenog |
flickr gives those: http://www.flickr.com/search/?[…]ct=0&mt=all&adv=1 |
| 12:57 |
|
marcela |
szabgab: so it's uselles now? and I can close review for it? |
| 12:58 |
|
szabgab |
actually Id'd rather change the splash screen so the Debian folks won't need to remove it |
| 12:58 |
|
szabgab |
marcela, right now you should not spend time on that, right |
| 12:58 |
|
zenog |
szabgab: Wikimedia commons also has some: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Butterfly |
| 12:58 |
|
szabgab |
but we will probably restart maintaining it |
| 12:58 |
|
marcela |
szabgab: thanks |
| 12:59 |
|
zenog |
szabgab: plus those: http://commons.wikimedia.org/w[…]egory:Butterflies |
| 13:05 |
|
zenog |
szabgab: I would also volunteer to turn some of them into suitable splash screen images ;-) |
| 13:11 |
|
szabgab |
so let's first see what the Debian folks say, what else is there that is not within their license |
| 13:11 |
|
szabgab |
and also talk to Alias who was the great proponent of the current splash screen |
| 13:12 |
|
szabgab |
I'd really like to be within the same licensing terms as Debian |
| 13:12 |
|
szabgab |
to make it easier for both Debian and Fedora and other folks |
| 13:15 |

| 13:20 |
|
Alias |
I wanted to change splash screens every release |
| 13:20 |
|
Alias |
If we could find suitable material |
| 13:21 |
|
Alias |
The reason we have split splash screens was so that we could use stuff from Flickr on our main splash |
| 13:21 |
|
zenog |
Alias: There are some links above (flickr and MediaWiki), all under reasonably free licensing terms. |
| 13:21 |
|
Alias |
Because without Flickr the number of images of Blue Morphos is both limited and not very good |
| 13:21 |
|
Alias |
zenog: None of those are our butterfly |
| 13:21 |
|
zenog |
Alias: So it should be a certain species? |
| 13:22 |
|
Alias |
Blue Morpho |
| 13:22 |
|
Alias |
(Any of the 5 variants in a pinch) |
| 13:22 |
|
Alias |
Anything that's CC-NC is fine |
| 13:22 |
|
Alias |
But NOT for Debian |
| 13:22 |
|
Alias |
Thus, split splash |
| 13:23 |
|
zenog |
Alias: We could use this one for a particularly unstable version of Padre: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/F[…]pho_underside.jpg |
| 13:23 |
|
Alias |
I thought we had some other decent photos pre-saved somewhere |
| 13:23 |
|
Alias |
Is there are artwork "distro" in the repo? |
| 13:25 |
|
Alias |
http://www.flickr.com/photos/i[…]cours/2975723359/ |
| 13:25 |
|
zenog |
Alias: Problem with NC is that it would forbid e.g. the inclusion of Padre on a magazine CD. |
| 13:27 |
|
Alias |
\Yes, there is that |
| 13:27 |
|
Alias |
oooo |
| 13:27 |

Alias |
That search you posted was WITH commercial use |
| 13:27 |
|
Alias |
That would explain why it found so few things |
| 13:28 |
|
zenog |
Yes. |
| 13:28 |
|
zenog |
Here is a public domain picture: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/F[…]cal_butterfly.jpg |
| 13:28 |

Alias |
And ugly one though |
| 13:28 |
|
Alias |

| 13:29 |
|
zenog |

| 13:29 |
|
zenog |
Wikimedia Commons content should be safe license-wise. |
| 13:30 |
|
zenog |
Is there a particular reason why the blue morpho was chosen as the Padre butterfly? |
| 13:30 |
|
Alias |
Because it's pretty |
| 13:30 |
|
Alias |
And enormous |
| 13:31 |
|
Alias |
And the alternative was a religious theme, and we all agreed that was a bad idea |
| 13:31 |
|
Alias |
The basic logic goes "Butterfly == Freedom == Hacking your own editor in your own language" |
| 13:31 |
|
Alias |
Beyond that, it was a little influenced by http://strawberryperl.com/ |
| 13:32 |
|
Alias |
Of having something that doesn't "feel nerdy" |
| 13:32 |
|
Alias |
Although I'm still somewhat dissapointed about our website |
| 13:33 |
|
zenog |
Okay. |
| 13:34 |
|
zenog |
The splash screen isn't the logo, right? |
| 13:34 |
|
Alias |
Correct |
| 13:34 |
|
Alias |
The logo is based off a very specific image that is usable by everyone |
| 13:34 |
|
Alias |
It just doesn't look very good above about 100x100 pixels |
| 13:34 |
|
zenog |
If we would allow us more freedom, e.g. to pick any species of butterfly for the splash screen, we would have a greater choice of suitable (license-wise and quality-wise) images for the splash screen. |
| 13:35 |
|
Alias |
Yup, but unfortunately, other butterflies suck |
| 13:35 |
|
Alias |
:) |
| 13:35 |
|
zenog |
And we would have a nice (and rather easy) change from version to version. |
| 13:35 |
|
zenog |
hehe ;-) |
| 13:35 |
|
Alias |
That irridescent blue is what really gives it that Pretty edge |
| 13:35 |
|
zenog |
That is right, though. |
| 13:35 |
|
Alias |
There's really nothing else that compares, and I've looked for hours |
| 13:35 |
|
Alias |
butterflyparadise.com |
| 13:36 |
|
Alias |
(They have allowed us to use their images for non-commercial purposes) |
| 13:36 |
|
Alias |
But again, they aren't usable in Debian, or on T-Shirts etc |
| 13:36 |
|
Alias |
Just splash and website |
| 13:46 |
|
zenog |
There are still some blue morphos on flickr which allow commercial use and modification: http://www.flickr.com/search/?[…]=all&adv=1#page=0 |
| 13:46 |
|
zenog |
Can't judge on the quality, though. |
| 13:50 |

Alias: this made me laugh, thanks: "Butterfly == Freedom == Hacking your own editor" |
| 13:51 |
|
Alias |
danlucraft, you agree though yes? |
| 13:51 |
|
danlucraft |
oh yeah! |
| 13:51 |
|
danlucraft |

| 13:51 |
|
danlucraft |
Like the gimp |
| 13:55 |
|
zenog |
danlucraft: Yeah, the gimp does that, too. |
| 13:55 |
|
Alias |
danlucraft, that was the idea |
| 13:56 |
|
Alias |
Unfortunately, it turned out to take more work than we expected to make the first one :) |
| 13:56 |
|
Alias |
Like, 3-4 hours |
| 13:56 |
|
danlucraft |
ah :) |
| 13:56 |
|
Alias |
The problem is the bloody paperwork |
| 13:56 |
|
Alias |
(I kid you not) |
| 13:57 |
|
danlucraft |
you mean, licenses and so on? |
| 13:57 |
|
Alias |
Every digital asset we use that isn't created directly by us needs to be validated as legal, and then documented inside the Padre README files |
| 13:57 |
|
danlucraft |
sheesh |
| 13:57 |
|
Alias |
The Debian guys are paranoid about that stuff |
| 13:57 |
|
danlucraft |
really? interesting |
| 13:58 |
|
Alias |
We get pestering questions if there's a single file we haven't accounted for |
| 13:58 |
|
Alias |
They care greatly about legal purity |
| 14:00 |
|
szabgab |
and it is good, so we don't have to :-) |
| 14:07 |
|
Sewi |
Does anybody know a butterfly fan who might be able to create pictures himself? Or donate existing ones? :) |
| 14:07 |
|
Sewi |
szabgab: Yes, I added collection of usage data to the popreport plugin but we stalled on how_to_inform_the_user and should_we_change_collection and how_to_store_the_data and when_to_send... |
| 14:16 |
|
szabgab |
so start by always collecting some usage info and prompt the user if we can send this data |
| 14:17 |

Do you run mod_perl on the server? Do you want to have it in a SQL db? |
