07:56 daxim how do I get around the file size limit?
07:57 daxim I have several GiB virtual memory, I'm sure my machine can handle a 1 MiB file
08:00 Sewi hi
08:02 daxim I found Document.pm and diked out the check. :-S
08:06 Sewi Padre gets pretty slow on too big files.
08:06 Sewi But the value for "too big" depends on your computer
08:07 daxim http://padre.perlide.org/trac/ticket/186  terrible, for one feeble machine everyone else is made to suffer
08:07 szabgab daxim, you could make that value configurable if you think so
08:08 szabgab and the error message could contain instructions on how to change it
08:08 szabgab and good morning
08:08 daxim I think about calculating this dynamically, warn if more than 50% of virtual mem would be allocated
08:09 daxim that's how the virtualbox gui does it
08:09 szabgab I am not sure if the problem is only lack of memory in the computer
08:09 szabgab or also that we have an issue of slowness with relatively big files
08:10 szabgab though frankly I have no idea when would you want to write a perl script that is so big
08:11 daxim use case: padre ~/.bash_history
08:11 daxim then filtering with perl regex
08:11 szabgab 208 K for me
08:12 daxim mine is over 1 MiB already
08:12 szabgab but maybe when you would like to filter then a better solution is not to load the file to the memmory just to show part of it
08:12 szabgab after all - if I understand you - you only want to display it and not edit it, right?
08:12 daxim no, filtering means editing
08:13 daxim along the way of grep and grep -v
08:13 daxim only in a GUI, so I can easily undo and experiment
08:13 szabgab my question is, do you need manual editing capabilities too or just automatic filtering capabilities?
08:14 szabgab and then once satisfied, saving the result
08:14 daxim I need and use both
08:14 szabgab for the latter I think there is an open ticket already
08:15 szabgab then you really need it :-)
08:15 szabgab so please experiment with the memory size limit thing
08:16 szabgab I just prefer that padre disallowes opening file than crashing on big files
08:16 daxim which wx documentation is up to date? there should be a call that returns the vsz limit cross-platform wise
08:16 szabgab or gives a reasonable warning if the operation will be too slow
08:22 Sewi The problem wasn't really memory (even if Padre uses multiples of the files size of memory), but parsing, highlighting and maybe other things require a huge amount of CPU power.
08:23 szabgab BTW can someone check if Padre is still leaking memory for every file ?
08:24 szabgab I think we used to have cross reference between the Editor and Document objects which meant they were not freed when a file was closed
08:42 zenog joined #padre
08:42 zenog daxim: You can set editor_file_size_limit in the Advanced Settings.
08:43 zenog I have currently set it to 2.5MB and it's fine.
08:43 zenog I used that to measure the performance of the document statistics dialog etc.
08:43 daxim yes, I've seen it.  do you also know about the wx documentation?
08:43 zenog nope
08:44 zenog The wxPerl bindings are not complete in all cases, and there isn't any really nice documentation.
08:44 zenog Sometimes there are comments in the normal WxWidgets docs about the Perl or Python bindings, but not always.
08:45 zenog You can check out the C++ or Python docs for the method name and then just try it out.
08:46 zenog If you find out something, maybe post it to the WxPerl wiki: http://wxperl.pvoice.org/w/index.php/WxPerlTablet

10:01 zenog hm. When I add if (Padre::Constant::UNIX) {
10:01 zenog $ENV{LANGUAGE} = $name;
10:01 zenog }

10:02 zenog Test::Perl::Critic complains about the use of $ENV
10:03 Sewi Hi rbaumer
10:04 Sewi zenog: You shouldn't _set_ %ENV, treat it as read-only.
10:04 Sewi You never know if setting %ENV works or now
10:04 Sewi not
10:05 zenog Sewi: Thing is, by setting ENV we would get WxWidgets to properly label the default buttons.
10:05 rbaumer Hi Sewi
10:05 Sewi zenog: ok, then add a no critic comment
10:05 Sewi rbaumer: Any questions?
10:07 rbaumer Sewi: So far I follow the discussion only.
10:10 Sewi Do you use Padre?
10:11 Sewi zenog: Continue discussing, we're being watched :-)
10:11 robn joined #padre
10:13 szabgab zenog, the question if that's the "right way to do it" ?
10:13 szabgab or we might set some parameter in Wx itself
10:13 zenog szabgab: That's right, that's good question. But so far I have not found out how to set the parameter in Wx itself.
10:14 szabgab BTW I think it would be nice if you could send documentation patches to the wx developers so the wx documentation would include more comments on how the Perl binding works
10:14 zenog We change the environment variable for the complete application, that's exactly what we want to do. It doesn't get exported.
10:15 rbaumer Sewi: Yes, but not regularly. I struggle to get it running on Mac OS X Leopard. On Windows I had no problems so far...
10:18 zenog szabgab: Thing is, right now setting $ENV{LANGUAGE} does exactly the job. I actually do not see any possible negative consequences here.
10:18 zenog szabgab: Is it okay if I commit it? IMHO it improves Padre's behavior w/o adding any problems.
10:19 zenog rbaumer: What is the problem on Mac OS X?
10:19 szabgab AFAIK we are setting ENV{} in other places as well, eg in script/padre
10:19 szabgab pls check why critic does not complain about that?
10:20 zenog szabgab: Okay, will do after lunch.
10:23 rbaumer zenog: Had a crash while starting Padre. Give me a second I try again with an newly downloaded version.
10:27 Sno|Laptop joined #padre
10:28 rbaumer zenog: I know it's made for Snow Leopard, maybe that why it doesn't work on Leopard. Get "unknown required load command 0x80000022".
10:28 shadowpaste "rbaumer" at 217.168.150.38 pasted "Padre.app on Mac OS X Leopard 10.5.8" (23 lines) at http://paste.scsys.co.uk/41846
10:41 szabgab Maybe we should take that down as it gives a false feeling to the people who try it
10:41 szabgab we should go back recommending to install from source code
10:41 szabgab on Mac OSX
10:45 rbaumer szabgab: Will try install from source as soon as I find some time. Do you still recommend to install perl 5.10 from source as well?
10:45 szabgab I don't have experience with Mac but I think yes
10:47 rbaumer Feedback from mac install follows...
10:58 zenog rbaumer: If you have OS X 10.3 or later, you should have Perl 5.8 there, which I guess would suffice for running Perl. Installing Perl 5.10 from source would be overkill in that case.
10:59 * Sno|Laptop is happy with Perl 5.10.1+Padre 0.58 on MacOS X built from pkgsrc ;)
10:59 Sno|Laptop this works fine - without any big issues
11:01 zenog rbaumer: So maybe you should try what Sno| suggests ...
11:02 rbaumer Will give it a try.
11:02 Sno|Laptop just one warning: it's X11 based perl/padre
11:03 Sno|Laptop but as a Unix guy - I don't mind using X11 apps on MacOS X
11:06 rbaumer Sno|Laptop: Do you use Snow Leopard or Leopard?
11:07 Sno|Laptop Snow leopard, but there're many Leopard users in pkgsrc
11:07 Sno|Laptop it's a source based distribution - but with full dependency management
11:08 Sno|Laptop so building padre in pkgsrc will build even x11/wxGTK28, some x11-dependencies (when you use X11_TYPE=modular) etc.
11:10 waxhead hey zenog
11:10 zenog Sno|Laptop: Does that mean Padre from pkgsrc is some sort of none-native version?
11:11 Sno|Laptop zenog: you mean, none-Cocoa or so?
11:11 Sno|Laptop it's native for the platform, but x11-binding, not Cocoa or Aqua binding
11:12 zenog Don't know, does it have a gtk or a Mac look and feel? (I don't use a Mac, so I just don't know).
11:16 Sno|Laptop It has gtk look and feel
11:16 Sno|Laptop maybe MacPorts could do a Mac look&feel package
11:17 dorkfish why don't use the wxperl application packaging instructions?
11:18 dorkfish there's a guide on creating an app bundle for mac os on the wxperl site
11:18 Sno|Laptop dorkfish: who?
11:18 dorkfish http://www.wxperl.co.uk/packaging/wxmac.html
11:18 dorkfish http://www.wxperl.co.uk/building/osx.html
11:18 Sno|Laptop not where - who :)
11:19 dorkfish who what?
11:19 dorkfish oh
11:19 dorkfish why don't we*
11:19 Sno|Laptop who should follow that instructions? who should create that package?
11:19 dorkfish whoever uses padre on mac os x
11:19 Sno|Laptop I can tell, why I don't :)
11:20 Sno|Laptop because it's out of my scope
11:20 dorkfish yeah, me too
11:21 Sno|Laptop I'm happy with the X11/gtk28 variant and don't want to get into trouble with building outside of a packaging system
11:21 Sno|Laptop there're 3 major OSS packaging systems available for MacOS X - and I hope that at least one of it will have focus on native Look&Feel applications
11:22 rbaumer I guess for a Mac OS X app with runs on all versions all have to be part of the app. Including perl, wxperl, padre...

11:36 dorkfish Sno|Laptop: macports has a variants system, which kind of works like use flags in gentoo

12:23 Hyppolit trunk/Padre/ trunk/Padre/lib/Padre/Wx/
12:26 zenog szabgab: in the scripts in script/, %ENV entries are set locally.
12:26 zenog szabgab: In the case of Wx::Main, this is not possible, because we are not at the outer scope.
12:26 szabgab so maybe that's what you need to do too?
12:26 szabgab and why do you set it there?
12:28 zenog Well, there is where the language settings are activated.
12:28 zenog But this is not at the outermost scope as in the case of scripts.
12:29 zenog Wait, I have an idea ...
12:30 zenog ... nope, won't work, I think.
12:31 zenog The environment variable needs to be set for the whole application, and not just for the scope of 'change_locale'.
12:32 zenog I cannot think of a way of doing differently without complicating things.
12:32 zenog Maybe someone else knows a better solution.
12:32 zenog ?
12:36 shadowpaste "waxhead" at 217.168.150.38 pasted "test issue in recent update -r11293" (2 lines) at http://paste.scsys.co.uk/41852
12:36 Hyppolit Changeset #11293 http://padre.perlide.org/trac/changeset/11293
12:37 waxhead you still get a pass at the end.. but interesting test out put..
12:42 waxhead szabgab, if I chuck the SQL stuff into trunk, did you want to take a look at it and see if it's going in the right direction?
12:43 zenog waxhead: Before the change related to that test case, the same character input sequence crashed Padre.
12:43 leprevost i think i found a little error in Padre's regex editor, can someone correct me if im wrong, please
12:44 zenog waxhead: Don't know how to suppress this.
12:44 zenog leprevost: shoot!
12:44 waxhead I'm wondering if it's going to serve much of a purpose.. the current implementation has a neat trick that once you have established the connection to the DB you can highlight some text and select execute query and it will...
12:44 waxhead zenog, oh.. fair enough..
12:44 waxhead I'm not very savvy with testing.. so can't help I'm afraid..
12:44 leprevost the positive lookbehind assertion, the correct sintax is (?< ) or (?<=) ?
12:45 waxhead szabgab, but the code is still really REALLY rough.. the dialog is just a work in progress.. and the only DB you can connect to is Postgres... unless you write the code to handle anything else.. :)
12:45 waxhead szabgab, which in theory shouldn't be that hard..
12:46 waxhead szabgab, also it would be nice to know if it's being done correct.. I'm generally terrible with this sort of design stuff...  :)
12:47 szabgab if I can find time to it I'll look at it of course
12:48 leprevost zenog: can you see my question ? in Padre's regex editor it is written (?< ), but the correct is (?<=), right ?
12:48 waxhead leprevost, according to perlre:  (?<=pattern)    A zero-width positive lookbehind assertion
12:48 waxhead leprevost, seems you're correct
12:49 waxhead szabgab, ok...
12:49 leprevost the pattern recognition fails if the equals sign is omited
12:49 waxhead I'm just a bit concerned if it's committed it may be considered try worthy...
12:50 waxhead maybe I'll hold on to it a bit longer and work on it a bit more before committing..
12:50 szabgab leprevost, it seems you are right
12:51 leprevost ok, so whats is the protocol now, should i post this observation somewhere ?
12:51 szabgab waxhead, even if it is release it can be "unstable" our release manager has done that several times!
12:51 szabgab so you can do it too ;-)
12:51 waxhead hahaa... uh huh... :-p
12:52 zenog leprevost: If you want, you can fix it and send a patch, if not, maybe someone here will fix it.
12:52 zenog leprevost: You can even commit it yourself, I guess.
12:53 leprevost i would love to do this, but i donw know how to do it
12:54 zenog leprevost: There is a file called Padre/Wx/Dialog/RegexEditor in the lib/ directory.
12:54 waxhead szabgab, this is different though.. Padre release was done with the backing of the many, this is all my work and I have no where to hide..
12:55 leprevost zenog: humm, ok, i will fix it
12:55 zenog leprevost: There should be a hash of the different regex constructs or so ...
12:55 leprevost senog: ok, thanks
12:56 leprevost thanks for helping
12:56 zenog leprevost: np
12:58 zenog leprevost: Thank YOU for reporting stuff, and then even fixing it yourself ;-)

19:29 Hyppolit trunk/Padre/share/locale/
19:49 burak hi
19:49 burak anyone know what "perl-format" means in *.po files?
19:50 Sewi translation?
19:50 Hyppolit translation is http://padre.perlide.org/trac/wiki/TranslationIntro
19:50 Sewi Maybe this helps?
19:55 burak nope. when I update the language file It marks some parts as "fuzzy" which are new stings that are matched from existing translations. And adds "#, perl-format" to some others. see line 74 of tr.po for example. I didn't remove that comment
19:58 Sewi Hmm, don't know. You don't know poedit?
19:58 Sewi know=use
20:07 burak I just update the language file and edit the file with whatever is open at the time :)
20:08 burak poedit looks nice. I'll try it
