06:52 Alias OK, I'm ready
06:53 Xaero ready for what?
06:53 Alias I only have to do a merge up from trunk to get changes from 0.62 to 0.64 and that's it
06:53 Alias To land the Padre-TaskRewrite branch
06:53 Alias And break pretty much everything
06:53 Xaero o.O
06:56 Alias waxhead: Do you want to increment the version now?
06:56 Alias waxhead: So I can do a merge up
06:56 Alias And I'll do one last merge up with any final bits and pieces later
06:59 Alias I gotta say, the new code feels faster
06:59 Alias I'm not sure if that's legitimate or not :)
06:59 Alias Or just hope :)
06:59 Xaero 0.63 felt faster compared to 0.62 too
07:00 Alias Despite there not really being any changes? :)
07:00 Xaero i dunno
07:01 Xaero how do yo time a gui app?
07:02 Alias It's complicated
07:02 Alias There's both actual speed, and perceived speed
07:04 Xaero padre take about the same time to startup on my computer as firefox, is it like that for everyone?
07:04 Alias Nope
07:04 Alias My firefox takes a lot longer
07:04 Alias But then my firefox has way more plugins than Padre
07:06 Xaero I have 6 plugins, no hdd caches and keep my ff clean by removing the unwanted sqlite dbs, but firefox is still one of the slowest apps on my computer
07:09 danlucraft joined #padre
07:11 Xaero i guess Komodo edit takes the crown on my computer for being the slowpoke of slowpokes it takes twices as long as padre to just launch
07:11 Sewi Xaero: Try Opera, it's the fastest browser I know.
07:11 Sewi Chrome is not bad and really fast at some actions, but multiple tabs with opening/closing actions are not so fast there
07:12 Xaero ff, says they'll make ff faster in the next release, so i think i'll give them a chance :P
07:12 Xaero i dunno whats up with these ubuntu, ff, thunderbird kinda apps
07:12 Xaero first they are awesome then they are bloated :(
07:14 daxim joined #padre
07:16 Alias When FF says they'll make it faster, they don't necesarily mean startup is faster
07:17 Alias My Padre takes 4 seconds to start up, with directory, functions, and 2 files open by default
07:17 Alias That's immediately after a shutdown though, with hot OS caches
07:18 Alias It's about 2.5 seconds with no files or features open
07:18 Xaero i don't mind startup time, i use it as a general test, ff does need a fair amount of CPU, you'll see that while running on older computers
07:18 Alias 2 seconds if I turn off the splash screen :)
07:19 Xaero splash screen?
07:19 Xaero on padre?
07:19 Alias uh, yes
07:19 Alias It might be disabled by default on Linux
07:19 Xaero i'm on windows :-?
07:19 Alias 1.1 user cpu seconds, 0.5 system cpu seconds

08:32 jq ping Alias
08:32 Xaero why do you always say ping?
08:33 jq Xaero: that's after the name of a common network tool, "ping", to try to connect a remote host to see if it's alive
08:34 jq and it has the added benefit of highlighting alias' name on his irc client (if he has a half-decent irc client)
08:34 Xaero i know that, but are you saying ping to check if he is there?
08:34 jq yes
08:34 Xaero what if he isn't?
08:34 jq since he's in australia and me in france, tz don't match
08:35 jq if he isn't, he won't answer, and i'll try again later... or send a mail :-)

09:40 Alias_ yo
09:40 Alias_ waxhead: How are we tracking?
09:40 * Alias_ should probably look at the commit log first
09:41 Alias_ oh awesome, he's done the 0.64 stuff
09:41 jq Alias_: tricky question for you regarding file-homedir
09:41 Alias_ ... again :)
09:42 jq my_dist_data($dist) currently returns my_data()/.perl/dist/$dist  when my_data() is $HOME
09:42 jq which seems logical, right?
09:42 Alias_ Looks correct
09:42 jq then, how will my_dist_config($dist) fit in this for legacy unixes?
09:42 Alias_ Indeed
09:43 Alias_ This is the problem you hit when you have to invent your own solutions without the benefits of the knowledge of those that create proper standards
09:43 jq so i propose for legacy unixes: my_dist_data($dist) returns $HOME/.perl/dist/$dist/data
09:44 jq and my_dist_config($dist) will return $HOME/.perl/dist/$dist/config
09:44 Alias_ It's elegant
09:44 Alias_ Only problem is, imagine the documentation
09:44 jq ?
09:44 Alias_ "First, edit the config file at /home/yourname/.perl/dist/Some-Random-Dist/config/main.ini
09:45 Alias_ It's not particularly terse :)
09:45 Alias_ Could we just say that the two paths conflate?
09:45 Alias_ That would be at least a little simpler, if potentially able to clash
09:45 jq i don't really care, as legacy unixes are... legacy, meaning not really used for desktop apps
09:45 Alias_ true
09:46 jq but i want us to take an *informed* decision
09:46 Alias_ indeed
09:46 Alias_ The path model you propose does at least read cleanly
09:46 Alias_ "perl distribution blah config"
09:47 Alias_ "perl modules blah data"
09:47 jq or maybe we can have the data in $home/.perl/dist/$dist/data, and config in $home/.perl/dist/$dist
09:47 Alias_ That might work
09:47 Alias_ Although at that point
09:47 jq but that's really shennanegan
09:47 Alias_ $home/.perl/dist/$dist/var
09:47 jq yeah, right.
09:47 Alias_ or hell
09:47 Alias_ $home/.perl/dist/$dist/etc
09:47 jq ok, so let's aim at what's simpler: allowing conflating
09:48 jq $home/.perl/dist/$dist for both config & data
09:48 Alias_ I am slightly nervous about true conflation
09:48 Alias_ But I don't mind the /config.ini + /var/xxxx idea
09:48 jq ok, so let's shoot for var & etc
09:48 Alias_ It's rather less likely to actually blow up
09:49 Alias_ But certainly var + etc would be HIGHLY unixy
09:49 Alias_ Which has a certain attraction for legaxy unix
09:49 jq which is the legacy iimplentation :-)
09:50 jq anyway, currently only my_dist_data is checked in, so ther's no question regarding var/, right?
09:50 jq i'm committing this
09:50 Alias_ Should be ok
09:51 Alias_ I wouldn't mind quite a few dev releases though
09:51 Alias_ We only just unleashed FreeDesktop into the wild
09:51 Alias_ Would be nice to try and find a way to measure adoption in the wild
09:51 jq i'm currently blogging about it
09:52 jq which is how i found this inconsistency between config and data :-)
09:52 Alias_ If FreeDesktop isn't as common as we think, then the assumption that only weird legacy people will ever use the Unix driver is wrong
09:52 Alias_ Which forces a bit of a rethink
09:52 jq xdg *is* more and more used
09:52 Alias_ yeah
09:52 jq even on solaris and other traditional unixes
09:52 Alias_ But are they always detected in practice? :)
09:53 jq it seems so, since there was cpan tessters failure reports on solaris on early xdg implementation (_01 or _02 iirc)
09:56 jq Alias_: did you took some time to think about my_config() wrt cross-platform (windows) issues?
09:56 Alias_ Not really
09:56 Alias_ I'm entirely focused on landing Padre::Task 2.0
10:00 jq Alias_: so, should i mkpath the my_dist_data()?
10:00 Alias_ I'd say absolutely not automatically
10:00 Alias_ ( CREATE => 1 ) ?
10:00 Alias_ Or something
10:01 Alias_ Or rather, absolutely not forcefully
10:01 Alias_ Imagine this
10:01 Alias_ grep { defined $_ } ( class in %INC )
10:02 Alias_ grep { defined $_ } map { ->my_module_data } ( class in %INC )
10:02 Alias_ rather
10:02 Alias_ You get the idea
10:02 jq right, good catch
10:03 jq hmmm. you mean that my_dist_data() should return undef if the directory doesn't exist?
10:03 Alias_ Thus, likely we'd make an argument of some kind
10:03 Alias_ right
10:03 jq ok, will change that
10:03 Alias_ return undef if not such directory exists, as for all other methods
10:04 Alias_ And then if we want to auto-create, some kind of param seems like the right approach
10:04 jq ok, will do so
10:05 Alias_ ->my_dist_data( 'Dist-Name', 1 ) or ...( 'Dist-Name', 'CREATE' ) or ...( 'Dist-Name', CREATE => 1 ) or ...( 'Dist-Name', create => 1 ) or ...( 'Dist-Name', { create => 1 } ) or something
10:05 Alias_ I don't really like the first one
10:06 Alias_ But any of the rest would allow for "NOTEST" type options that return the path without testing it's existance
10:06 Alias_ Or other kinds of options in the future
10:07 jq i prefer having pairs, to allow further option passing
10:08 jq Alias_: btw, i released file::homedir::pathclass as you suggested.
10:08 Alias_ Cool
10:08 Alias_ Let me know how takeup goes
10:09 jq sure

11:28 jq and it accepts { create=>1 } to force creation
11:28 Alias_ ok
11:29 * jq just realize that i need to test for defined-nesss of data_dir before building upon it.
11:29 Alias_ yup
11:32 jq ok, done

11:33 jq which should it be: 0.91_01 or 0.02_01?
11:33 jq 0.92_01 even
11:33 Alias_ I prefer to increment forwards for dev releases, then increment again for final
11:33 jq that is?

11:33 jq ok
11:34 jq i need to update changes

11:37 jq ==> can you double-check it and release please?
11:37 Alias_ Doing it now
11:37 jq thks
11:40 jq Alias_: i forgot to add file::path as dependencey
11:41 Alias_ Should I?
11:42 jq yes
11:42 jq it require it (not use, require - but still it's needed for {create=>1})
11:42 Alias_ Bit of a problem in here
11:43 Alias_ I'm going to make some changes
11:43 Alias_ Details stuff
11:43 jq ok
11:48 Alias_ Double check my logic, but I'm fairly sure that your ::PathClass version won't work with my_dist_data as you wrote it
11:48 Alias_ (Which I'm fixing)
11:50 jq why?
11:51 Alias_ eq __PACKAGE__
11:52 jq nope, it works fine
11:52 Alias_ File::HomeDir::PathClass->my_dist_data('Foo-Bar') works?
11:52 jq yes
11:52 Alias_ How?
11:53 jq shift if defined($_[0]) && $_[0] eq __PACKAGE__;
11:53 Alias_ __PACKAGE__ isn't adaptive
11:53 Alias_ Or are you about to blow my mind
11:53 Alias_ oh, you aren't subclassing right?
11:53 Alias_ You are just shimming
11:53 jq no
11:53 jq yes
11:53 Alias_ right right
11:53 Alias_ ok
11:54 jq it's a package of its own, i'm just using your @EXPORT_OK
11:54 jq to know which subs to wrap
11:54 Alias_ yeah, it's ok
11:54 jq i thought it would be simpler
11:54 Alias_ And safer probably
11:54 jq yes. :-)
11:55 jq the corrolary being that i need file::homedir to maintain the exportable functions ;-)
12:03 Alias_ I'm switching make_path to mkpath so we don't need a very new version of File::Patjh
12:03 Alias_ We're not passing any params to make_path yet, so that should be ok for now

20:23 kthakore_studymore Steffen: if the person pushing Padre in his company is switching
20:23 kthakore_studymore Steffen: that is bad news
20:24 kthakore_studymore Steffen: ok I will do a profile, can I automate opening and closing files and so on?
