06:57 szabgab someone spammed me with a few Perl related questions, the interesting one to me was this one:
06:57 szabgab "If you were to start afresh, would you learn Perl again?"
06:57 azawawi Hi
06:58 Hyppolit #813: Find in files cannot find $self (closed defect) [ http://padre.perlide.org/trac/ticket/813#comment:4 ]
06:58 szabgab hi azawawi !
06:58 szabgab I was just thinking about you
06:58 szabgab we need you here !
06:58 waxhead yeah, I'd learn perl any day...
06:59 azawawi It seems that the latest strawberry is missing mingw32-make.exe (which is means no rakudo build working like before)
06:59 waxhead it's a great cross platform language that does a lot of work for me
06:59 waxhead fact is perl is on windows and unix, means many many things I'd do on either platform can be done with the same script
06:59 azawawi szabgab: sure but I am really busy lately. I try to allocate time but it is a really busy season :)
06:59 waxhead it's the reason I learnt it...
07:00 szabgab azawawi, I just built it
07:00 azawawi really?
07:00 Sewi azawawi: Submit a grant and be paid by TPF for being here :-)
07:00 szabgab tough i was using the Padre stand alone installation
07:00 szabgab so maybe that has it
07:01 azawawi 'Win32 strawberryperl 5.12.0.1 #1 Thu May  6 16:09:27 2010 i386'
07:01 Hyppolit #1: Improve load time (closed defect) [ http://padre.perlide.org/trac/ticket/1#comment:5 ]
07:01 szabgab so maybe it is due to the 5.12 ishness ?
07:01 azawawi no mingw32-make is added separated... dmake.exe is there. Seems to be missing
07:02 szabgab waxhead, my reaction was to that question sg like "I hope" as I am not sure where would I hear about it
07:02 azawawi waxhead: hi there
07:02 szabgab azawawi, busy with work?
07:03 azawawi szabgab: life + work + accidents... life maintenance :)
07:03 szabgab if we can help in anything...
07:04 azawawi szabgab: june/july is a busy season for people visiting from GCC area to their folk in jordan
07:05 azawawi CSJewell: ping
07:05 azawawi szabgab: i'll re-install to make sure something didnt mess up my strawberry setup
07:13 waxhead azawawi, hey... long time no see.. how's things?
07:14 waxhead szabgab, interesting... I learnt perl because I explictly googled for cross platform script language..
07:14 waxhead back when I started learning about linux etc, I think I read something about perl being able to do what sed, grep and awk did
07:15 waxhead only in a nicer way
07:16 waxhead I recommend perl to anyone who wants to be 'cross platform'... ie *nix and windows for the most part
07:16 waxhead I also use vbscript for the win32 specific stuff and where it makes sense
07:16 waxhead but mostly if I know there's a perl on the platform, I'll use that
07:16 waxhead things like Net::LDAP are a real boon!
07:17 waxhead I hate other ldap libraries...
07:17 waxhead even doign stuff like sending email on an event is simpler in most cases with perl
07:18 waxhead Boy.. I so don't get our Menu-ing code...
07:18 waxhead I spent ages trying to find how Find in Files works..
07:18 waxhead and in the end didn't.. I guessed my way to Ack...
07:19 danlucraft joined #padre
07:20 waxhead and I also discovered how much I don't like the current directory tree lay out any more.   I liked it much better with directories first then the files.
07:20 waxhead so I tried looking for how it's being sorted... lost... :(
07:21 azawawi waxhead: great... I went for a status meeting and just came back :)
07:22 azawawi szabgab: regarding chrome, they really made it so simple. The interface is very simple... not cluttered
07:23 szabgab I switched to it now, but it is strange is some cases
07:23 szabgab epecially as I have that netbook which is small and runs Hebrew Win7
07:23 Sewi waxhead: There was a mail about the directory tree sorting on the mailing list but only one guy replied...
07:23 danlucraft1 joined #padre
07:23 azawawi szabgab: sometimes i think we need to only have full screen with quick side popups so that you can only focus on the coding
07:24 Sewi szabgab: Opera (and maybe Firefox) are using F11 for fullscreen mode which doesn't display anything but the website itself.
07:24 szabgab it certainly would be interesting to experiment with
07:24 danlucraft joined #padre
07:25 azawawi Sewi: the amount of 'default' visible screen area is amazing on chrome when compared to others
07:25 szabgab it would provide a much bigger area for editing
07:25 danlucraft1 joined #padre
07:26 Sewi azawawi: Sure
07:26 azawawi szabgab: that might be one of the advantages of notepad++, big visible editor window
07:26 azawawi szabgab: directory browser could be refactored to be a popup with autocomplete functionality
07:27 szabgab if we can manage to load the classes only on-demand then we can have both
07:27 szabgab the current thing and the pop-up
07:28 azawawi szabgab: Eclipse is great with its builtin search/replace tools
07:28 azawawi szabgab: JetBrains is great with its refactoring and previously simple interface (non-modal if i remember correctly)
07:31 azawawi szabgab: one thing that you really need is the context-sensitive quick actions. Like when a text is selected, you could have actions to uppercase/lowercase/...various text operations
07:31 azawawi szabgab: that way you do not need to remember shortcuts for uppercasing, joining lines, ...etc

07:41 Sewi Why does Ctrl+Shift+O ask for confirmation if there is only one matching file found?
07:46 waxhead Sewi, OK, added my bit to the thread.
07:50 waxhead hmmm.... should the array of files be sorted during the task or when rendering?

15:10 dapatrick Looks like Makefile.PL currently in trunk dies in an unfriendly way if Alien::wxWidgets is not installed.
15:24 daxim since when is Can't locate Alien/wxWidgets.pm in @INC unfriendly?
15:24 daxim I mean, Makefile.PL didn't exactly go out of its way to insult your tribe and mother
15:25 daxim besides: META.yml  configure_requires:  Alien::wxWidgets: 0.46
15:38 dapatrick Right, got it.
15:38 dapatrick I was just concerned, is all.
15:38 dapatrick It has been my experience that Makefile.PL doesn't/isn't supposed to die when a dependency is unavailable.
15:39 dapatrick But I'm comparatively new to Perl so I may be wrong there.
15:41 Sewi dapatrick: Makefile.PL usually reports unsatisfied dependencies.
15:41 Sewi Use "cpan ." in that directory to let CPAN take care of dependency problems.
15:42 Sewi It might fail for Alien::WxWidgets, but should work for most others.
15:42 dapatrick Okay.
15:42 dapatrick I'll install Alien::wxWidgets separately to verify that.
15:42 dapatrick Thanks for the tip about "cpan ."
15:42 dapatrick I've never seen that use before.
15:43 Sewi Do you know cpan at all?
15:43 dapatrick Yes, certainly.
15:43 Sewi ok
15:43 Sewi :-)
15:43 dapatrick I just didn't know about cpan .
15:43 dapatrick That looks for META.yml in the directory?
15:43 Sewi I didn't know "cpan ." before s/o here pointed me to it :-)
15:43 dapatrick Or is it looking at Makefile.PL/Build.PL?
15:43 daxim cpan looks at the meta file

16:37 Sewi Hi Alias
16:37 Alias \o
16:39 Sewi Ctrl+Wheel isn't working, but the menu options are there, is this expected?
16:47 Alias uh... yes?
16:47 Alias no?
16:47 Alias erm...
16:54 jjore This morning, I'm using an inetd-like server for my X desktop to accept debugger terminals. That is, my core problem is ordinary forking mod_perl with a debugger and using $ENV{PERLDB_OPTS}='RemotePort=localhost:53505' to get each process to open sockets to my desktop and request a new debugger prompt.
16:54 jjore It's occurred to me that this sort of functionality might have common purpose with Padre as an IDE.
16:55 szabgab_home hi jjore
16:55 jjore Hi szabgab_home.
16:55 szabgab_home oh  I am still at home :)
16:55 jjore Oh, fwiw, I have "identical" functionality now also for screen and tmux.
16:57 szabgab I am just trying to swticth back to use screen+irssi
16:57 szabgab and I am in a limbo :)
16:58 jjore I guess I also like gud-mode in Emacs and would usually prefer being there.
16:58 Hyppolit svn: r11797 | adamk++ | http://padre.perlide.org/trac/changeset/11797
16:58 Hyppolit Adding integration with PPI::Transform, and implemented a couple of initial transforms that will we can add to the list of supported Perl refactorings

17:00 jjore I hope this is ok bothering #padre. This *seems* like an appropriate place to at least vet an idea like this which might want to live within ordinary desktop IDEs.
17:00 Alias Sure
17:00 Alias We like company
17:00 Alias And new potential developers even more :)
17:01 jjore I thought it was funny and so improbable a couple years ago when you told me you wanted to make a refactoring editor for perl. Who's laughing now?
17:03 Alias It's not laughing
17:03 Alias More of a self-important ego-boosting I Told You All So :)
17:03 jjore Uh, huh. I couldn't possibly do enough Alias++.
17:04 Alias Main credit to Gabor for actually getting on and making it
17:04 jjore Because at some level what I observed was you going the very long road of shaving all the yaks along the way to this problem.
17:04 Alias It's a personality problem
17:05 szabgab_home jjore ? http://www.flickr.com/photos/caseywest/4722518842/in/set-72157624329021112/

17:05 jjore szabgab_home: who is that?
17:06 szabgab_home I thought it was you :)
17:06 jjore That's Lucha Rubin.
17:06 jjore Or something.
17:07 szabgab_home ah, I wonder why did I think that's you

20:07 Sewi OT Question: Some German guys are _selling_ the Linux Kernel, I think this violates the GPL, but who should I tell about this?
20:12 rindolf Sewi: it's OK to sell it.
20:12 rindolf Sewi: as long as you provide the source.
20:12 rindolf Sewi: http://www.gnu.org/philosophy/selling.html
20:16 Sewi Thanks. They don't say anything real about the source but I doubt that they provide it. And they don't charge for distribution, but for the Kernel itself.
20:17 rindolf Sewi: why would anyone buy the kernel from them?
20:24 Sewi They promise a special configuration for gameservers which should give you 15000 fps.
20:25 Sewi Human eye is limited to 50? 60? maybe 70 pictures/sec. (as far as I remember) :-)
20:26 rindolf Sewi: do they give the source with that configuration?
20:30 Sewi They don't write anything special about the source, but reading their page makes me feel they won't. Maybe I should write to them and ask :-)
