05:26 waxhead afternoon
06:16 Sewi hi
06:17 waxhead hey Sewi... how's things?
06:17 waxhead think we should roll out a release with the new directory sorting?
06:17 * waxhead likes it best
06:17 Sven_Windows_ joined #padre
06:18 Sewi waxhead: Did you do the change of sorting? I noticed it.
06:18 Sewi But there are so many blockers, we have one bad release, why do another one?
06:33 waxhead what blockers do we have?
06:33 waxhead no.. alias did the change for the sorting.. I couldn't work it out...
06:39 Alias_ He has blockers I can't see
06:39 Alias_ It's important that we keep the release tempo up
06:39 Sewi http://padre.perlide.org/trac/query?status=accepted&status=assigned&status=new&status=reopened&order=id&priority=blocker&amp;priority=critical&col=id&col=summary&col=status&col=owner&col=type&amp;col=priority&col=milestone&desc=1
06:39 Alias_ There's quite a lot of changes in the current release, and it works fine on windows
06:39 Sewi So do a Windows-only release :-)
06:40 Sewi Alias: How do us use Padre? Do you start a new task every time you need to edit a file and exit it when you're done or do you have a Padre running all the time?
06:41 Alias_ Most of the time
06:41 Alias_ Usually 20 or so files
06:42 Alias_ All your problems are probably related to the overaggressive scanning of your home directory
06:42 Alias_ There's an advanced config entry you can change now
06:42 Alias_ Which should fix that
06:43 Sewi ok
06:43 Sewi I'll try
06:43 Alias_ waxhead: Do the release whenever you want

07:09 Alias Sewi: Correct, that one
07:09 Alias Sewi: Set that to your desktop or somewhere else that isn't freaking enormous, and see how the performance issues go
07:09 Alias BTW, it doesn't rescan on every tab
07:10 Alias It only rescans if the file in the new tab is in a different project to the old one
07:12 Sewi ok
07:12 Sewi It set the default to ~/Documents - which is empty :-)
07:12 Sewi so everything is fine.
07:13 Alias Dunno what THAT will do...
07:13 Alias Maybe that's the problem
07:13 Sewi Doesn't seem so.
07:17 Alias problem gone away now
07:41 waxhead cooking dinner.. back in a while...
07:41 Sewi Alias: I'm working on those DISPLAY-needing tests and got all of them open in one Padre. The Directory Task fires on every tab change and the task exits within one second.
07:41 Sewi No problem, your for your info

07:48 waxhead so that's the fix done?
07:48 Sewi Seems so.
07:49 Sewi It runs with and without DISPLAY
07:49 waxhead cool...
07:50 waxhead I think we can work through that list of critical problems before the release and fix what we can, and down grade what can be left... like that solaris one.. it's been there for ages.. and I don't have solaris to test against

12:03 zenog Now that there is stricter checking for the plug-in API version, how shall we proceed with plug-in updates?
12:06 zenog E.g., who would release a new version of the SpellCheck plug-in?
12:06 zenog Shall I just write to Jerome Quelin?
12:07 zenog Also, the translation files for that plug-in seem to be missing in the SVN repository.

12:25 Alias_ It probably is related to slow project directories
12:26 Alias_ The "wrong" bit can be fixed
12:26 Alias_ The task system support iterated gui elements
12:26 Alias_ You can have the directory tree say "Any tasks in flight at the moment are invalid, discard the results"

12:33 Alias_ Any plugins kept in the main repo should be fine for different people to release, I think
12:33 Alias_ Unless someone says they want a particular plugin treated otherwise
12:33 zenog I am currently writing an e-mail to Jerome (cc: to padre-dev list), maybe he will do it anyway.

12:35 zenog Alias_: Maybe we can automate Padre plug-in releases as well? I don't have much experience with CPAN/Perl distributions ...

13:41 kthakore back in 2009
13:41 kthakore that CPAN could *never* be used for end user apps
13:41 kthakore :D
13:41 kthakore Alias_: remeber that arguement you weighed in on it too
13:41 kthakore it was on sdl-devel@perl.org

13:42 kthakore Alias_: bah ... whatever it is huge victory for me
13:42 Alias_ I know :)
13:42 kthakore Alias_: it might be run of the mill for you
13:42 Alias_ It's not that
13:42 Alias_ It's a bit weird, but I find the older I get I just keep the core principles of what I think it takes to get stuff done in my head, then I just tell others from time to time
13:43 Alias_ As long as it works out ok, I find myself getting more forgetful about specifics
13:44 Alias_ It's when it doesn't work things get stuck in my head :(

13:54 Alias_ Like PAdre
13:54 Alias_ Stuck in my head for years
13:54 Alias_ After my failure with Kephra
13:54 kthakore Kephra?
13:55 Alias_ 5 years ago, just after I first spoke about PPI at OSCON, I got a grant to make "A refactoring Perl editor"
13:55 Alias_ I tried to take Kephra as it existed at the time, and layer PPI stuff on top
13:55 Alias_ In the end it was too hard to work with the author, after much effort
13:55 Alias_ And I abandoned it
13:55 kthakore Alias_: awww
13:55 kthakore Alias_: oh well
13:55 Alias_ Strawberry was created as a side effect of that grant
13:56 kthakore Alias_: good
13:56 Alias_ So they gave me the money anyway
13:56 Alias_ But it stuck with me
13:56 Alias_ And I told a bunch of people in the mean time what a good editor should be built like
13:56 Alias_ And Gabor had a similar idea, and finally took action on it
