00:35 Topic for #padreis now Padre's Birthday and Hackathon weekend 24th-25th of July - http://use.perl.org/~Alias/journal/40441 |Latest Padre is 0.66, for installation see http://padre.perlide.org/trac/wiki/Download | Log: http://perlide.org/irclogs/ and http://irclog.perlgeek.de/padre/today | Pasting: http://scsys.co.uk:8001
00:53 Hyppolit svn: r11923 | waxhead++ | http://padre.perlide.org/trac/changeset/11923
00:53 Hyppolit Slight change to the way the locale object is instantiated, removing the warning to the console about not being able to set the language.
00:53 Hyppolit
00:53 Hyppolit This might not be correct but hasn't caused problems with the testing so far.
00:53 Hyppolit
00:54 Hyppolit If this is OK, search for the TODO's and remove any code that doesn't need to be there.
00:54 Hyppolit trunk/Padre/lib/Padre/
00:56 waxhead zenog, I'm seeing this in the console with your last changes - I'm guessing it was you: Found a duplicate action 'view.language.zh-cn'
00:56 waxhead Found a duplicate action 'view.language.zh-tw'
01:12 waxhead zenog, I can see why now... line 228 in Padre::Wx::Menu:: View calls Padre::Wx::ActionLibrary->init_language_actions;
01:13 waxhead Padre::Wx::ActionLibrary->init_language_actions() setups up the actions, which is fine, but then Padre::Wx::Menu::View also goes through and sets the actions again.. hence the duplicate action warning.

04:00 szabgab Alias_: I don't think calling the server of Padre "Madre" is a good idea :)
04:00 Alias_ Call it a code name :)
04:01 szabgab you could just write "Padre server"
04:02 szabgab we don't want people think we are *that* sexists
04:02 Alias_ How is that sexist to have a symmetrical pair of names
04:02 szabgab A woman serving a man?
04:02 Alias_ sigh
04:03 szabgab of course if that was the "controller" :)
04:04 szabgab but I have a question to you
04:05 szabgab you saw I started the perl 6 screencast, the viewer numbers are like this: 864 - 203 - 107 - 39
04:05 szabgab for the 4 episodes
04:05 Alias_ I certainly haven't seen them
04:06 szabgab while obviously the later episodes had less time to get viewers actually about 600 of the viewers of the first episode came in the first 30 hours
04:06 szabgab so how would you explain the drop in viewers?
04:06 szabgab bad videos?
04:06 szabgab bad accent?
04:07 Alias_ I have to say your accent can be a problem
04:07 sorear how do you calculate viewership?
04:07 Alias_ Not in person, not in talks
04:07 szabgab having white background on the first and black on the other 3?
04:07 Alias_ But in something polished like a headline screencast, it could be
04:07 Alias_ Also, people are always interested in the first chapter
04:07 szabgab sorear: youtube tells me
04:07 Alias_ Plus, there's no easy way to try it out yourself
04:08 sorear if someone comes and watches the first one for 40 seconds, decides they don't want your series, and don't even visit the rest, what would that register as?
04:08 Alias_ Exactly what he's seeing there
04:08 Alias_ 600 -> 200
04:08 Alias_ er, 900 -> 200
04:09 Alias_ I continue to think that until Perl 6 is real, until you can have it fully installed and experimentable in less than a minute, nobody will really care very much
04:09 szabgab sorear: I guess a hit on the first one
04:09 Alias_ I started to watch the files one, just to look
04:10 szabgab Alias_: that might be, I hope Rakudo * will help a bit in that on 29th July
04:10 Alias_ And stopped after about 30 seconds, just after you said the word slurp
04:10 Alias_ Because it's a tiny video, on an archaic editor with only 5 lines on the screen, talking about a language I can't use
04:11 Alias_ And it felt like the pace would be fairly slow
04:11 Alias_ Plus, I'd already read all the code 5 seconds in
04:12 * Alias_ heads back to work
04:13 pece joined #padre
04:14 szabgab Alias_: thanks, though actually thinking about it I am quite sure you don't count in my target audience of training anyway :)
04:14 szabgab most people will read and understand way slower than you do
04:15 szabgab but the small screen and archaic editor are good points
04:18 Alias Treat it more like a talk
04:18 Alias You don't need to introduce yourself, or have title screens
04:19 Alias The youtube page will do that for you
04:19 Alias You don't show a whole ton of stuff on a slide and then slowly describe each line
04:19 Alias To a screencast, I'd add that you show the thing people will actually use themself
04:20 Alias I've seen some fairly decent ones that always start from a desktop
04:20 Alias So actually installing Perl 6, or starting up the editor, or interactive shell, would all be part of it
04:20 szabgab on every one of them?
04:21 sorear I just crossposted your request for a Windows binary installer of Rakudo to #perl6
04:21 Alias Maybe not the installation step, but all the rest of the steps yes
04:21 * sorear waits to see what is made of it
04:21 szabgab sorear: I hope to have such a windows installer come together with Padre too :)
04:22 szabgab what do you think about these: http://railscasts.com/
04:22 szabgab Alias_: and I did not understand what you said about "ton of stuff on a slide"
04:22 Alias I think he's showing the screencasts in the wrong order :)
04:23 szabgab I did not hink I have tons of things, do you?
04:23 Alias You've seen people that put up 8 bullet points, and then talk laboriously about each one
04:23 Alias Yours is smaller, but similar
04:23 Alias I think my screencasts should be typing the code as they go
04:23 Alias s/my/when I'm watching, that the/
04:24 szabgab I can try that but I type a lot slower that you
04:24 szabgab I might use the typeahed thingy though
04:24 Alias It's a movie, so movement is a good thing
04:24 szabgab so I have all the things already saved and they just appears as if I was typing fast
04:24 Alias Seeing the compile warning flags appearing and dissapearing probably also adds to the appeal
04:25 sorear szabgab: it's a recording, you can rescale time in post-production
04:25 sorear no sense making the audience wait 30 minutes for ./Configure --gen-parrot to finish
04:25 szabgab sorear: right now I have very limited understanding of all the production part
04:26 Alias sorear: Therein lies the issue
04:26 sorear ?
04:26 Alias sorear: And you want the production to be as cheap as possible, so they actually get made
04:26 szabgab for now I am still spending 2-4 hour on a single part ...
04:26 Alias That's the paradox of screencasts, you want them high production values, but they work at all because they are cheap to make
04:27 Alias As a guideline, commercial television costs 1 hour of labour per second of screen time
04:27 Alias Advertising can cost up to 100 hours of labour per second of screen time
04:28 Alias I find a good conference talk takes around 1 hour of labour per minute of talk time
04:28 Alias I'd hope we could meet at least that level of efficiency...
04:28 Alias Ideally two or three times better
04:29 szabgab once you should write a blog post on how you prepare your talks
04:29 szabgab and where did you get those numbers?
04:30 Alias Commercial TV from a friend, advertising form the Gruen Transfer show on Australian TV, and the last one from personal experience
05:49 waxhead szabgab, I'm one of the ones who has seen the first two, not the sencond two though.. plan to do so, just don't have time
05:49 waxhead and your accent is fine..
05:49 waxhead ok.. have to go...
05:50 waxhead regarding the duplicate action, I have emailed zeno about it.. looks like it came in with his language changes
