16:28 user_627 hi all
16:29 user_627 I am a complete newb to perl and wondered whether someone could off advice on "error - no execution mode was defined for this document" in padre?
16:29 user_627 *offer
16:32 user_627 can anyone offer advice please?
16:32 user_627 :)
16:33 szabgab user_627: sure
16:33 szabgab probably you did not save the file as .pl
16:33 szabgab so Padre thinks it is a text file
16:35 user_627 cheers bud
16:36 user_627 i assumed (wrongly) that hitting save would suffice
16:36 user_627 obviously not
16:36 user_627 many thanks
16:36 user_627 :)
16:36 user_627 added the .pl
16:36 szabgab we should have saner deafults
16:40 user_627 lol
16:41 user_627 very true or more logical newbs
16:41 szabgab it is easier to fix one editor than 1000 newbies :)
16:44 user_627 hahha yes
16:50 user_627 I am attempting to open and read a text file "windows environment" could you tell me if iam on the right tracks with "open(test, 'c:\test.txt') or die "Could not open file for reading $!\n"; $record = <test>;"
16:51 Steffen open my $fh, '<', 'c:\\test.txt' or die "Could not open file for reading: $!\n"; my $record = <$fh>;
16:52 Steffen Note that: 1) I replaced your global file handle "test" with a lexical one (stored in a variable) called $fh.
16:52 Steffen 2) I'm using the three-argument form of open(). It is important to use it over the two-argument form.
16:53 Steffen That I dropped the parenthesis is just a matter of style. You can just as well write "open(my $fh, '>', 'filename')"
16:53 user_627 thankyou
16:53 Steffen 3) I declare $record (and $fh) with 'my'.
16:53 user_627 it runs but nothing appears
16:53 Steffen Obviously not. You're just reading from a file.
16:54 Steffen Try adding a 'print $record'
16:54 user_627 many thanks
16:54 Steffen Sure, no problem.
16:55 Steffen Make sure to put a "use strict;" and a "use warnings;" line at the top of your script.
16:55 Steffen That catches a lot of beginner mistakes.
16:55 Steffen Including omission of variable declarations (my!).
16:55 user_627 ok will do
