08:32 submersible1 to see if my padre is chewing cpu when my machine _should_ be idle
08:33 Sewi Should be gone lone bevore 0.74, but Padre is CPU-hungry anyway - maybe due to the programming language used :)
08:33 Sewi It's nothing compared to eclipe but more than a texteditor :)
08:34 submersible1 Sewi: Oh sure. however I doubt it needs 30% cpu to idle.  I suspect a runaway something

09:58 mib_y5co80 padre starts on ubuntu 10.10 with segmentation fault! can anybody help?
09:58 azawawi could you paste it?
09:59 azawawi mib_y5co80: please use http://scsys.co.uk:8001/
10:02 shadowpaste "mib_y5co80" at 217.168.150.38 pasted "rz@rz:~$ padre Segmentation fa" (3 lines) at http://paste.scsys.co.uk/56544
10:03 azawawi where did you install it from? cpan or aptitutde?
10:04 mib_y5co80 sometimes when starting padre from gnome menu a blue logo pops up for about a tenth of a second. nothing else.
10:04 azawawi you installed it from the package manager?
10:04 azawawi the software center?
10:04 azawawi try the following...
10:05 azawawi padre --reset
10:05 mib_y5co80 Next Problem: the padre Website states to install padre using aptitude. Aptitude is not supported by Ubuntu 10.10 any more
10:05 mib_y5co80 I installed it using the software center
10:05 azawawi yeah i know ... will fix it now
10:06 mib_y5co80 padre --reset shows the logo a little bit longer but then again segmentation fault
10:07 azawawi one min plz
10:08 mib_y5co80 My Ubuntu 10.10 is a fresh installation with cpan Task::Catalyst::Tutorial installed
10:08 azawawi and then you 'sudo ap-get padre' ?
10:09 azawawi s/ap-get/apt-get
10:09 azawawi or cpan padre ?
10:09 mib_y5co80 I actually used the Software Centre, but yes padre installed AFTER Catalyst
10:10 azawawi my advice 'sudo apt-get remove padre'
10:11 azawawi and then 'cpan padre'
10:11 azawawi the one in the software center is so old
10:11 mib_y5co80 OK I try
10:13 mib_y5co80 For your info Synaptic says padre version 0.63.ds1-1

10:19 azawawi cpan padre ?
10:19 azawawi all lowercase letters
10:19 azawawi sorry
10:19 azawawi cpan Padre
10:19 azawawi :)
10:20 azawawi to make it easier
10:20 shadowpaste "mib_y5co80" at 217.168.150.38 pasted "rz@rz:~$ cpan padre CPAN: Stor" (12 lines) at http://paste.scsys.co.uk/56545
10:20 azawawi i normally install 'cpan App::cpanminus' first
10:20 azawawi and then 'cpanm Padre'
10:20 azawawi got mixed up with 'apt-get install padre'... :)
10:21 daxim I know mib_y5co80 has a german keyboard (layout)
10:21 azawawi hi daxim
10:22 daxim I'm organising participation in the plat_forms programming contest, the situation in the perl community is dire
10:22 mib_y5co80 I guess I do a quick reinstall of the operating system and then try to install padre on the fresh installation using cpan
10:22 azawawi daxim: cool. the web platforms contest, right?
10:23 azawawi mib_y5co80: if you want to do it right
10:23 daxim mib_y5co80, just try again with   install Padre
10:23 daxim that must work
10:23 azawawi mib_y5co80: true, it will work...
10:24 azawawi mib_y5co80: perlbrew or local::lib can be helpful also to separate yourself from admin issues...
10:25 azawawi mib_y5co80: that way you wont need to sudo anymore... and you'll run all your stuff in userland
10:25 mib_y5co80 Well I tried a new apt-get install padre -- still get segmentation fault
10:26 azawawi let me try it here... brb
10:28 mib_y5co80 I have an idea: cpan installed Catalyst and alot of dependancies in home, is it possible that system and home installed libs are mixed up?
10:28 azawawi daxim: if we upgraded padre in ubuntu, will it show up right away in ubuntu 10.10 or in the next release?
10:29 azawawi mib_y5co80: maybe
10:29 azawawi mib_y5co80: do you want to run a separate clean setup? i could guide you through it
10:30 mib_y5co80 So I try to reinstall my operatin system and tell you later using the same usrname
10:30 daxim I don't do debian packaging, azawawi
10:30 azawawi mib_y5co80: segmentation fault... after 'sudo apt-get install padre' ...
10:30 azawawi mib_y5co80: no need to re-install
10:30 mib_y5co80 yes
10:31 azawawi mib_y5co80: sudo apt-get remove padre
10:31 azawawi mib_y5co80: and then.... sudo apt-get autoremove
10:32 mib_y5co80 OK, remove and autoremove have finised
10:32 azawawi mib_y5co80: now we only have Catalyst stuff under system perl... no worries.. perlbrew can help there
10:33 marcela left #padre
10:33 azawawi mib_y5co80: cpan App::cpanminus
10:33 mib_y5co80 I do not know perlbrew
10:33 azawawi mib_y5co80: dont worry... i'll guide you :)
10:33 mib_y5co80 OK
10:34 azawawi mib_y5co80: perlbrew = you can manage more than one perl on one's machine... and separate yourself from system perl which comes with ubuntu
10:34 azawawi mib_y5co80: cpan App::cpanminus
10:35 azawawi mib_y5co80: and then answer 'yes' on all questions asked by cpan
10:35 mib_y5co80 Is running already
10:35 azawawi cool
10:35 azawawi this installs cpanm which is cpan minus... a better and easier to use CPAN client
10:37 azawawi mib_y5co80: done?
10:37 mib_y5co80 Yes, App::cpanmminus is installed
10:37 azawawi cool
10:37 azawawi mib_y5co80: cpan App::perlbrew
10:38 azawawi sorry
10:38 azawawi mib_y5co80: cpanm App::perlbrew
10:38 azawawi mib_y5co80: ... ouch i messed up here... please stop it :)
10:40 mib_y5co80 I Ctrl-C´ed cpan App::Perlbrew
10:40 azawawi mib_y5co80: cool
10:40 azawawi mib_y5co80: cpanp u App::perlbrew App::cpanminus
10:40 azawawi mib_y5co80: ... sorry :)
10:41 azawawi mib_y5co80: this will uninstall them
10:41 mib_y5co80 Maybe I should also remove Catalyst
10:41 azawawi mib_y5co80: you can but not its dependencies...
10:41 azawawi mib_y5co80: sudo apt-get install curl
10:42 azawawi mib_y5co80: curl -LO http://xrl.us/perlbrew
10:42 azawawi mib_y5co80: chmod +x perlbrew
10:42 azawawi mib_y5co80: ./perlbrew install
10:42 azawawi mib_y5co80: rm perlbrew
10:42 azawawi mib_y5co80: :)
10:43 El_Che the default install place sucks
10:43 El_Che PERLBREWROOT is handy
10:43 azawawi El_Che: hi... :)
10:43 El_Che lo
10:44 azawawi mib_y5co80: done?
10:44 mib_y5co80 OK perlbrew is running
10:44 azawawi mib_y5co80: perlbrew init
10:44 mib_y5co80 done
10:44 azawawi mib_y5co80: perlbrew install perl-5.12.2
10:45 azawawi mib_y5co80: and then wait like 5-10 min for it to build perl and install it :)
10:46 azawawi mib_y5co80: you can execute the tail command it tells you to type in another terminal if you want to see the progress...
10:46 mib_y5co80 OK I am waiting, thanks so far. I tell you when it´s done.
10:46 azawawi mib_y5co80: now when finish
10:46 azawawi mib_y5co80: perl -v
10:46 azawawi mib_y5co80: to see the current running perl (which is system)
10:47 azawawi mib_y5co80: and then
10:47 azawawi mib_y5co80: perlbrew switch perl-5.12.2
10:47 azawawi mib_y5co80: perl -v
10:47 azawawi mib_y5co80: and you now have perl-5.12.2 in your home directory... :)

10:49 azawawi mib_y5co80: btw, did you source it into your bashrc... like 'perlbrew init' told you?
10:49 mib_y5co80 Of cource not

10:50 azawawi mib_y5co80: perlbrew init

10:52 El_Che mib_y5co80: take something als /opt/perlbrew
10:53 azawawi mib_y5co80: are you running as root?
10:53 azawawi mib_y5co80: you should be running as a normal user
10:53 mib_y5co80 when I installed perlbrew I was
10:54 azawawi mib_y5co80: did you 'sudo' the command?
10:54 mib_y5co80 yes
10:54 azawawi mib_y5co80: no need... it should run in user...
10:55 azawawi mib_y5co80: remove it from /root
10:56 azawawi mib_y5co80: and then do the same commands as normal user
10:56 azawawi mib_y5co80: except the apt-get stuff
10:59 mib_y5co80 OK  perl-5.12.2 is now installing in MY homedir

12:19 kanishka joined #padre
12:22 szabgab ppisar: POD2::Base is used to allow people to switch their perl5 documentation to other languages
12:23 szabgab if it is not inuse any more then we have a trouble I think :)
12:32 ppisar Simple grep for 'POD2::' does show nothing except the Makefile and META.yml. So I guess Padre does not use it currently.

12:34 mib_y5co80 Hi, I am back
12:35 mib_y5co80 in the mean time I had some bad results
12:36 mib_y5co80 installing padre using cpanm did not work because some gtk+ dependencies did not work
12:36 mib_y5co80 Just to make sure I was trying to run Padre on Ubuntu 10.10
12:37 mib_y5co80 In between I did a complete reinstall of Ubuntu 10.10 Desktop i386
12:37 azawawi joined #padre
12:37 mib_y5co80 First thing I installed Padre and got the Segmentation fault again
12:37 azawawi szabgab: ubuntu 10.10 padre is broken...
12:38 azawawi mib_y5co80: were you able to install perlbrew?
12:38 mib_y5co80 My /var/log/messages says: padre[5486]: segfault at 0 ip b6fd331e sp bfa51ca0 error 4 in Wx.so[b6f1e000+2cb000]
12:39 mib_y5co80 Even after doing all Ubuntu updates, the same thing.
12:40 mib_y5co80 No I have not tryed to install anything else jet. Just Ubuntu and its updates.
12:40 mib_y5co80 In parallel I installed Padre on Windows 7 and it works fine.
12:41 mib_y5co80 Only one think I am missing: codecompletion
12:41 Sewi Oh, it's there
12:41 azawawi mib_y5co80: Tools/Preferences/Code completion
12:41 mib_y5co80 how to use it?
12:41 Sewi You need to enable it in the preferences

12:42 szabgab azawawi: you mean padre that comes with the distro?

12:43 mib_y5co80 Yes the Padre which comes with Ubuntu 10.10
12:43 szabgab yeah, I think we know that and I have no idea why they released it that way
12:43 szabgab and now the test fail on my local installation

12:57 azawawi Alias: thanks
12:58 Getty szabgab: its the same concern i told you at CeBIT
12:58 Getty szabgab: i also rechecked that, and showed the marketing friend of mine the page (without comment), and he says the same that i told you (beside something i dont want to repeat now hehe)
12:58 szabgab I am afraid I don't remember it
13:00 Getty its.... you must try to think like a company which has money but no direct link to perl, no direct reason, just some "wish" to spend money on perl cause they use it, they will not really get the point, its missing a real "mission" that satisfy them, its too much concentrated on the event theme which doesnt make a company fully happy
13:00 szabgab Getty: you can tell it on a private channel
13:00 Getty and i still think the money classes are something that i suggest from concerns like Microsoft or Apple, not Perl
13:01 szabgab Getty: do you have any specific ideas as well, or just the concept that "we should find those items" ?
13:01 szabgab I did not get the last sentence
13:02 Getty the money spending "levels"
13:02 szabgab what about them?
13:03 Getty its like a class-society, its something that doesnt fit into the community style and my personal thinking, i dont see a real advantage about this, why companies give the money cause of that
13:03 Getty but i can link you someday to my marketing dude (which i wanted to link you to since cebit........) and he can tell you more
13:04 szabgab sure go ahead, hook us up
13:04 Getty ok will do, i will send him to IRC, right now i'm very busy the next days, but next week or so monday or so
13:04 szabgab actually I asked JT Smith and he sadi I should have even moer levels
13:05 szabgab and he is way more a business person than most of us :)
13:05 szabgab so each company can find its owl level of expenditure
13:05 Getty more levels actually would fix the problem on other way, but i would just remove the level and make it more "by requirement" and show up "plans" and say what the plans cost, this still could involve longtime investments
13:06 Getty but imagine a company who wants to spend 1000$, they would probably spend it at once for a specific event so that they feel they do something directly, but monthly payment would make it less attractive to them
13:06 szabgab "plans"?
13:06 Getty yeah, where the money goes, what is the investment used for
13:06 szabgab why do you think that?
13:07 Getty cause i would feel that way, when i have 1000$ :)
13:07 szabgab oh, they could do targeted sponsorship as well
13:07 azawawi Alias: but that doesnt help when you have no actual sibling to a block... e.g. sub foo { } sub bar { }
13:07 szabgab but are you a company?
13:07 Alias azawawi: You want the token-wise sibling, not element
13:07 Getty yeah but that doesnt give them anything, cause you give the benefits just to the classes, or you make it more clear that there are other concepts are accepted as well
13:08 Getty szabgab: Getty haz company.... yeah but still Getty ;)
13:08 Alias ->next_token
13:10 szabgab yeah we will need to make that clearer though the main concept is that I'd like to hook up companies for *regular* payment
13:10 szabgab so I won't have to ask them every now and then for more money
13:10 azawawi Alias: i get it... first_token, last_token, next_token ... thx
13:10 Getty i understand that, but you force them to hard
13:10 Getty its like "HEY GIVE MONEY REGULARY!....... and you can also give it point by point"
13:12 jnap joined #padre
13:13 Getty especially german companys hate regular payments ;) we have so many of them hehehe
13:13 szabgab we were plannig to add a page about "Donations" but have not got around to it yet
13:14 Getty you must make it more like concentrating on ONE page and make it at the lower half of the page that you say "but hey, you can also give regular money, and help us giving more stable marketing for perl"
13:15 Getty so that you dont make someone who gives one stack of money less valueable than someone who gives it regulary for someone who informs himself
13:15 Getty and very very very very important: WHY you need the money, exact numbers what is required, what is needed, what are the plans
13:16 Getty if i would be able to spend 20.000$ / Year, right now i would have totally no idea where the money goes really, the list of stuff that you do is far from detailed or informable
13:16 Getty you must think always of a company who _ONLY_ sees the page
13:16 Getty (for example, would you think Google would support this?)
13:17 szabgab In most of my business life people always *asked* for more information
13:17 szabgab which means if I have all the information on the web site I cannot give them *more*
13:18 szabgab but you are right and we are discussin with Renee what part of our budget will we want to show and how much in detail
13:19 szabgab but as opposed to the spring and the summer when I wanted to start this and when I had a lot of free time to start doing this now I am fully booked by clients
13:19 szabgab so now it will go a lot slower than I wanted
13:19 szabgab but well
13:20 Richard I found another problem: I have Padre running on 64-Bit Windows 7. CPAN needs Nmake15.exe which it can not find as 64-Bit version.
13:21 Richard This seems not to be a Padre Problem, but maybe someone knows where to redirect.
13:21 szabgab Richard: do you have ActivePerl installed?
13:21 Richard I think so, yes
13:21 szabgab as Strawberry Perl comes with its own dmake
13:22 Richard OK, thanks
13:22 szabgab unless you are tied to it in some way it would be better t switch to Strawberry Perl
13:22 azawawi Richard: i think you need to modify %PATH% so that strawberry directories come first
13:22 szabgab Alias: shall I recommend the Alfa of the Professional?

13:23 szabgab that was an answer too :)
13:23 Richard Well actually I woul like to see Padre running under Linux better.
13:23 azawawi szabgab: hehe
13:23 submersible1 foomp
13:23 azawawi submersible1: is this the zombie submersible? :)
13:23 szabgab Richard: so let's see what do you have./
13:23 szabgab ?
13:24 szabgab Ubuntu 10.10 after apt-get install padre ?
13:24 Richard No, I deinstalled it again
13:24 submersible1 azawawi: until i figure out how to kill mibbit on my office desktop ... yes
13:24 szabgab Richard: oh, you did not have to,
13:25 Richard I just have the plain Ubuntu 10.10 with all updates from today
13:25 azawawi submersible1: what are you working on these days? or not working on? :)
13:25 szabgab it might be better to install as it already brings some of the dependencies
13:25 szabgab anyway lets try that way
13:25 szabgab have you checked out the local::lib page azawawi linked to?
13:26 szabgab apparently someone cleaned up our wiki and now I can hardly find anything :)
13:26 Richard Yes, I read it, but do not know what to do with it.
13:26 azawawi szabgab: it is bad to mix libperl deb  packages with cpan...
13:27 szabgab azawawi: not really mixing
13:27 szabgab adding them as local::lib
13:27 szabgab that works perferctly for me
13:27 azawawi Richard: give me a min... i'll provide an easier one
13:27 szabgab Richard: let me write it down, a few mins
13:27 Richard OK
13:28 szabgab azawawi: are you editing the wiki to give Richard instructions?
13:28 azawawi szabgab: not at the moment
13:28 szabgab azawawi: so how are you going to help ?
13:29 azawawi szabgab: im putting the notes locally and then i'll edit it :)
13:29 szabgab azawawi: so I'll wait till you finish it
13:30 submersible1 azawawi: index and search , also async protocol stuff ; work @ home
13:30 submersible1 azawawi: so for padre it's swarm and pod index/search
13:36 szabgab Getty: so if I try to summarize you would like to have 1) a prominent option to just give money to some specific event or project we do
13:36 szabgab 2) have a detailed budget plan on what we are going to spend our money?
13:36 Getty 2) yes
13:36 Getty 1) its more like that both ways to spend money should be shown equal valueable
13:37 szabgab but they are not, IMHO
13:38 szabgab a one time donation is good, but it will mean we will have to go after donations again and again
13:38 szabgab so it is more work for us
13:44 shadowpaste "azawawi" at 217.168.150.38 pasted "cpan Padre via local::lib" (36 lines) at http://paste.scsys.co.uk/56569

13:44 Richard OK
13:44 azawawi Richard: make sure that perlbrew is off via 'perlbrew off'

14:11 szabgab that it does not recognize the download falure :

14:12 szabgab Richard: could you please open a bug report for aline-wxwidgets with that output ?
14:13 szabgab then you could try to download that file manually
14:13 szabgab and inject in the build process

14:15 azawawi Richard: try installing the alien::wxwidgets again

14:15 szabgab azawawi: there is a way to download it manually and then inject it in the installation
14:16 azawawi sure.. let me get it
14:16 szabgab I think it is done by setting   AWX_URL=file://...

15:47 zenog szabgab: Go away from your computer and enjoy life ;-)
15:47 szabgab zenog: for that we need to be able to actually build stand-alone versions of Padre
15:47 szabgab oh, life
15:47 szabgab what is that?
15:47 azawawi zenog: im actually thinking of something like App::perlbrew but for Padre :)
15:50 zenog azawawi: In which way?
15:51 zenog szabgab: Well, in the end there could also be the download instructions instead of the package.
15:51 azawawi zenog: padretea install padre-0.74 perl-5.12.2

15:56 zenog hi dapatrick
15:57 zenog The thing with automating stuff on the client side is that you invite people to home-brew more stuff, which leads to more different settings and scenarios, more things that can fail, more support requests, and thus less time to further develop Padre or fixing real bugs.
15:58 azawawi true
15:58 zenog For instance, I don't really miss the times when one had to compile the kernel to support some piece of hardware, or when everyone compiled their own kernel.
15:58 zenog It is fun, of course, but it is also fun to focus on other, newer problems.
15:59 dapatrick Hello zenog
15:59 zenog azawawi: But of course I do not want to tell people what to do with their time. It's their own, and they should do what they want.
