00:00 Alias Personally, at this point I'd probably install the current ordinary strawberry and do a full Padre 0.80 install
00:01 bdr_multi OK, I think that's the 0.63 package (it contains Perl 5.12, and the 0.63 Padre).  How do I go about doing this and a full Padre .8 install?
00:02 Alias no, the normal strawberry install doesn't include padre
00:02 bdr_multi Ok, I'll head back to strawberry's web site and see what I can see, there.
00:02 Alias http://www.strawberryperl.com/download/5.12.2.0/strawberry-perl-5.12.2.0.msi
00:04 bdr_multi Thanks,  that's in process (downloading, so I'm sure I have a good copy).  Then get Padre 0.80 where?
00:04 Alias Just install it with the cpan client
00:04 Alias Start -> Strawberry -> CPAN Client
00:04 Alias > install Padre
00:05 bdr_multi OK, I see - I almost think I was there, earlier, and the lack of Padre made me nervous.  Too much going too wrong to think clearly, I guess.
00:06 Alias Yeah, I'm not sure why you're seeing problems of that kind
00:06 Alias I have it on XP, Vista and Win7 and haven't seen quite as many issues
00:08 bdr_multi I've never seen such a rash of them with one (well, sort of "one") product.  Msoft is giving me headaches, too, (instructions on web site don't work in software; registration keys are "invalid"), but all of this in a half week! Hair pulling, 4-letter Anglo-Szxon words.
00:09 Alias Yeah, sorry
00:09 bdr_multi Well, the 5.12 install has started, and my fingers and toes are crossed....
00:10 Alias You don't have any other Perls or cygwin or some other C toolchain installed do you?
00:10 Alias There's no support software you should need
00:10 Alias When Strawberry installs do have issues, it's often because there's another C compiler in the PATH in addition to the one strawberry comes with
00:10 Alias Or another Perl in a cygwin install or something
00:12 bdr_multi Rakudo is on here, and cygwin to support Berkely scheme; but no other C things (I don't like C), but no Perl in cygwin that I know of.  I'll be honest, I'm not even sure of my path at this time.  I'll check
00:12 Alias hrm
00:12 Alias The cygwin could potentially cause problems, I think it comes with Perl
00:14 bdr_multi My path is full of references to old places I tried to install 5.12, the new install directory for 5.12, and windows common files, and ruby 1.92
00:14 Alias Strawberry tries to follow best practice and doesn't put itself aggressively at the front of the PATH
00:15 Alias But some other things do, and sometimes that causes issues
00:16 bdr_multi the first entry is a reference: <%installation folder%>, and then all of the strawberry locations, then the common files, and last is the ruby directory (old language from an old DOS user)
00:16 Alias Anyways, we'll see how it goes
00:16 Alias Is the CPAN install running
00:18 bdr_multi Not yet - I wanted to check the Perl install.  It processed a pretty long .pl file OK, so that's encouraging.   I'll move over there and start the cpan client.
00:18 bdr_multi Started and running
00:22 bdr_multi btw, I deleted my (erroneously installed) mingw gcc installation.  And cygwin does have a perl installed - 5.11, I believe.  The cpan process errored out, says it will try again after pre-req's installed...
00:28 bdr_multi "Could not find or check IPC::Run at ...perl/lib/IPC/Cmd.pm line 126" ... "perl.exe ./Build -- NOT OK" "Make had returned bad status, install seems impossible." "Can't locate Alien/wxWdigets in @INC @INC contains inc privind c:/strawberry.../perl/site/lib C:/...perl/vendor/lib C:/...perl/lib at lne 49.
00:29 bdr_multi BEGIN failed -- complilaton aborted at Makefile.PL line 49
00:32 bdr_multi Failed during this command: MBARBON/Alien-wxWidgets-0.51.tar.gz : make NO - PLAVEN/Padre-0.80.tar.gz:writemakefile NO 'C:/...\perl.exe Makefile.PL returned status 512
00:33 bdr_multi And now, of course, any attempt to install Padre just returns Makefile errors.
00:34 bdr_multi PasteBin'd everything from my command window
00:35 bdr_multi http://mibpaste.com/IQnXFw
00:41 Alias hrm
00:41 Alias try this
00:41 Alias > notest install IPC::Run
00:41 Alias Then quit the cpan client and restart it
00:42 Alias It has this horrible habit of refusing to try to install the same thing twice if it fails
00:42 Alias Then try the Padre install again

00:49 Alias wtf
00:50 Alias That can't be a windows 7 thing can it
00:50 Alias Start -> Run -> cmd
00:50 Alias What happens
00:51 bdr_multi I can't imagine it is, and I have start|run|cmd several times today. Again...and it worked fine.
00:52 Alias Have \strawb~1\perl\lib Want \strawberry\perl\lib Writing Makefile for IPC::Run Can't spawn "cmd.exe": No such file or directory at C:\strawberry-perl\perl\lib/
00:52 Alias That bit is curious
00:52 bdr_multi BUT - the windows and windows\system directories are NOT on the path....
00:53 Alias That's kind of odd too isn't it?
00:53 Alias Wish I had my Windows 7 laptop with me atm
00:55 bdr_multi Yes, it is curious.  I'd like to know why paths that don't even exist are on my PATH, and I wish I had the old windows tool that would let me examine my path and environment and change them easily.  Have to do it the hard way, now.
00:56 Alias I know there's some issues in more recent windows versions with stale environments
00:57 Alias Sometimes a relogin can fix it
00:57 Alias Dunno if that's your problem though
01:04 bdr_multi I've re-logged-on several times in last week, but not today.  Also, found the windows tool to change my path gently; added %windir% and c:\windows\system32.  That should help.  Try notest install  IPC::Run again?
01:07 bdr_multi I did try that, and no joy again.  Paste coming.
