06:45 Hyppolit #1117: Filter through Perl: strange behavior (closed defect) [ http://padre.perlide.org/trac/ticket/1117#comment:2 ]
06:46 Sewi ping szabgab
06:49 Alias_ I'm not a big fan of that filter through Perl
06:49 Alias_ I can't work out what the hell it does
06:49 Alias_ Or how to use it
06:50 szabgab Sewi: reping
06:51 Sewi gm
06:51 asarch left #padre
06:51 szabgab gm
06:51 Sewi szabgab: I'ld like to fix #1116, may I do this without branching?
06:51 Hyppolit #1116: Filter through Perl: use ellipsis in menu entry '...' (new defect) [ http://padre.perlide.org/trac/ticket/1116#comment:1 ]
06:51 Sewi Alias: It needs documentation and "API" updates: currently it expects input and output in $_
06:52 Sewi I just opened Padre a few minutes ago to work on it :)
06:52 Alias_ Sewi: Can you place a null filter into the dialog
06:52 Alias_ # Input arrives in $_
06:53 Sewi like a sample? sure.
06:53 Alias_ $_ = $_
06:53 szabgab Sewi: I think we don't yet do branches, but you are working on the trunk, right?
06:53 Alias_ # Output is taken from $_
06:53 Sewi szabgab: yes
06:53 Alias_ Sewi: Is the filter thing a map or grep thing?
06:53 Sewi but #1116 are only text updates
06:53 Hyppolit #1116: Filter through Perl: use ellipsis in menu entry '...' (new defect) [ http://padre.perlide.org/trac/ticket/1116#comment:1 ]
06:53 Alias_ Or just one line at a time?
06:54 Alias_ Can you make 1 -> 0 lines or 1 -> N lines like you can with map?
06:54 szabgab For me that filter thing should be a tool to offer chaining maps and greps and maybe some other things
06:54 szabgab in a more visual way
06:54 Alias_ That would make it more fidgity though
06:54 szabgab so people who don't know perl could use it
06:54 Sewi Alias: Currently everything is in $_, but this should change
06:54 szabgab fidgity?
06:54 szabgab we need Hyppolit to translate me things :)
06:54 Alias_ A more complex UI requiring careful and detailed usage
06:55 szabgab yes I agreee
06:55 Alias_ whereas with filter you arrive at a text box, type for 5 seconds and hit enter
06:55 Alias_ Although can you hit entire?
06:55 Alias_ enter?
06:55 szabgab and is the filter useful for use?
06:55 Alias_ I've wanted a map/grep/sort thing myself
06:56 Alias_ And the filter does at least provide something vaguely like map
06:56 szabgab I see
06:56 Alias_ Albeit without the 1 to N lines feature of map
06:56 szabgab so this could be the start of that more complex thing I wanted to have
06:56 szabgab I am thinking about people who need to analyze big log files
06:56 Sewi :)
06:57 szabgab they cannot load it into memory as it is bigger than their memory
06:57 Sewi Alias: Sorry, but how can you do a 1 to 0 with map?
06:57 Alias_ szabgab: Padre can't open big log files
06:57 Alias_ map { /foo/ ? $_ : () }
06:57 Alias_ That's equivalent to grep { /foo/ }
06:57 szabgab sure, but we are talking about files that would not make sense to open in any editor
06:58 szabgab or at least not to load the whole thing in the memmmory
06:58 Alias_ map blocks return a list
06:58 Alias_ map { $_, $_ }
06:58 Alias_ Makes every line double
06:58 Sewi Alias: Thanks!
06:58 Alias_ You've never seen this?
06:58 szabgab so I could create a filter and only see the result, which might still be too big for the memory or padre so that case need to be handled as wel
06:58 kaare_ is now known as kaare
06:58 Sewi 1 to N, sure, I'm using this myself, but never saw 1 to 0
06:59 Alias_ my %output = map { $_ => $input{$_} } grep { /foo_/ } keys %input;
06:59 Alias_ Well, it's 1 to N where N is 0 or more :)
06:59 Alias_ You have to have the last expression evaluate to ()
06:59 Sewi szabgab: We might want a "readonly" type of document which can't be edited but viewed without size limit
07:00 szabgab think about offering some of the features of the linux pipe-line to the GUI people
07:00 Alias_ Sewi: Making it readonly won't help
07:00 Alias_ Sewi: The problem is that we slurp the file
07:00 Alias_ To write a "real" editor you have to window the file
07:00 Sewi Alias: Sure if we don't define it as Padre::Editor but as Padre::Readonly and show only a small part
07:01 szabgab Padre::Viewer
07:01 Alias_ At the moment the relationship between Padre::Document, Padre::Wx::Editor and Padre::Wx::Notepad is a bit too tightly coupled to allow that
07:01 Sewi I think we're talking about the same thing :)
07:02 szabgab for a starter it could be a totally separate output window
07:02 szabgab not even within the view of padre
07:02 szabgab or the result could go to our output window at the bottom

07:05 Sewi should this be merged into the release branch?
07:05 Hyppolit #1116: Filter through Perl: use ellipsis in menu entry '...' (closed defect) [ http://padre.perlide.org/trac/ticket/1116#comment:2 ]
07:08 szabgab Sewi: no
07:08 szabgab this is not a critical thing
07:08 szabgab like crashing
07:08 Sewi ok, understood
07:08 Alias_ Or new features that don't work at all
07:09 * Alias_ is rather dissapointed with the svn plugin
07:09 Alias_ I wonder if we should write our own wrapper over svn command line
07:09 Alias_ So that we can integrate it properly
07:10 szabgab why not fix the existing one?
07:10 Alias_ SVN::Class is the problem
07:10 Alias_ Not the plugin itself
07:10 Alias_ Plugin looks fine, albeit version 1ish
07:10 Alias_ SVN::Class is a bit of a monster

07:16 Hyppolit trunk/Padre/lib/Padre/Wx/Dialog/
07:20 Sewi szabgab: I'd like to do further work on this, adding some things we just discussed. Should this go into trunk, a plugin, a branch, ... ?
07:23 Alias_ The filter?
07:24 Alias_ The Perl filter is a standalone dialog, with a fairly simple and direct interaction with Padre::Editor
07:24 Alias_ I'd do it as a plugin myself

07:31 Hyppolit missing { } resulting in task crash
07:31 Hyppolit trunk/Padre/lib/Padre/Wx/
07:36 Alias_ Oh man, embarrasing
07:36 Alias_ The number of dependencies you need to run Padre is like 80
07:36 Alias_ The number of dependencies you need to build a plugin from the repository is 200
07:37 Alias_ And that doesn't include Padre
07:38 Alias_ It took 45 minutes to install it all, just so I could install a plugin
08:17 danlucraft joined #padre
08:22 * Alias is rather sad, as he has found a pretty big error in scintilla
08:23 Alias If you put a unix newline file into a scintilla editor on win32, the highlighting breaks
08:23 Sewi Current scintilla or Wx/Padre's scintilla?
08:23 Alias Wx/Padre's one
08:23 Alias But I have no expectation it will ever be updated
08:24 Alias Not via Wx
08:24 Alias It's a contrib module nobody seems to be able to find the time to update
08:27 Sewi azawawi is working on this
08:27 Alias ok
08:27 Alias So I'll not do anything dramatic like change the entire internal string storage of Padre::Editor... for now
08:31 Sewi Sorry for another dump question: How do I change STDIN? I'd like to replace the current STDIN with a IO::Scalar filehandle to feed data to the perl filter.
08:32 Alias huh?
08:32 Alias Why would you need STDIN?
08:33 Alias Aren't you just feeding it via a string to list to map to list to string?
08:34 Sewi I was thinking of this filter: while (<STDIN>) { print $_; } like zenog wrote in #1117

08:59 Alias No need to tag it as "Experimental" if it's in a plugin
09:00 Sewi How to tag it as "replacement-for-core-feature"?
09:00 Alias Don't? :)
09:02 Sewi Doesn't sound good. We might end up with improved features as plugins which noone ever merges into core :-(
09:04 Alias We already do
09:04 Alias We're going to pull out the current one, yes?
09:05 Alias Till you're happy with the plugin version
09:05 Sewi I am happy with the plugin version as version 1, it's good enough to merge (up to me).
09:05 Sewi Missing things: a) use STDIN/STDOUT if this is reall needed, b) use other filter sources

12:00 szabgab to the people who are not (yet) Padre users
12:00 Alias Nice blog entry

12:00 Alias Even nicer that you fixed that bug, it had been annoying me too
12:00 szabgab zenog: and the whole blog background looks nice
12:01 zenog szabgab: Tonight, I will try to explain the two features in the text a bit.
12:02 zenog szabgab: The gray background ... kind of minimalistic ;-)

12:04 zenog hi fenderson
12:04 fenderson hi zenog
12:06 fenderson can you send me the link for padre's trac?
12:07 zenog trac?
12:07 Hyppolit trac is http://padre.perlide.org/trac and also http://padre.perlide.org/trac/register
12:08 zenog fenderson: You want to register for it?
12:08 zenog fenderson: Then I'd need a minute to open registration.
12:08 fenderson no no
12:08 fenderson i am registered
12:08 zenog fenderson: good
12:09 fenderson i want to do manual test for padre
12:10 fenderson and i want to see what tests already been done, and where can i report if i find any bug or something else
12:12 fenderson zenog: btw i signed in here (http://mail.perlide.org/mailman/listinfo/padre-trac) and i cant find where can i log in..
12:16 zenog fenderson: You do not need to log in usually, you just can send and receive e-mails.
12:16 zenog fenderson: Login to change subscription options is at the bottom of the page
12:18 fenderson ohh, so i am actually looking for page where i can see where are the manual tests that people done for padre, and place where i can post my manual tests
12:20 zenog fenderson: We have not such a thing yet, but we could make such a thing (low-tech) in the wiki.
12:22 zenog General question: Is it likely that a fix for the Padre server will be available soon, so that it could be shipped with 0.82?
12:23 fenderson zenog: so if i want to do manual test, as gabor told me where can i post it in, and how can i know if it wasnt checked before..?
12:24 szabgab fenderson: the list of the manual test are what zenog wrote a few days ago and all of them are listed on http://padre.perlide.org/trac/wiki/PreReleaseChecklist
12:25 szabgab that's a wiki page within our trac installation
12:25 fenderson szabgab: ok got it thanks
12:25 szabgab so that's all the manual tests we had
12:25 fenderson wait
12:25 fenderson ohh
12:26 szabgab if you want to see the tickets (bug and feature requests) then you can see a link at the top called "view tickets"
12:26 fenderson now i see, because i read that page over and over again like 6-8 times
12:27 szabgab zenog: imho - till we have a better solution - we should maintain the information of "who checked what, when and on which version of padre" in that wiki page
12:27 szabgab in tables under each test case
12:27 fenderson szabgab: wow now i see it, ok so all of the tickets there are manual tests?
12:27 szabgab if it is too much editing for a single page we could split it up to a few pages
12:28 szabgab fenderson: no, all the tickets are bugs or features request
12:28 szabgab but maybe you could describe manual tests based on those tickets
12:28 fenderson almost all of them are old versions
12:29 fenderson szabgab: so i'll go over padre today i see if i can find something
12:30 szabgab find what?
12:30 fenderson szabgab: and if there are things that i dont know what they meant for i'll ask here
12:30 zenog szabgab: I am working on a solution for that ...
12:30 fenderson szabgab: bugs
12:30 szabgab zenog you mean outside of trac or within?
12:30 szabgab fenderson: that's not the task
12:31 zenog withing the wiki
12:31 szabgab zenog: ok
12:31 fenderson szabgab: when you're talking about manual test what do you mean
12:31 szabgab fenderson: a set of instuctions on what to do to check a specific feature of padre
12:32 zenog szabgab: I am just fighting with the wiki link syntax ... it is not as flexible as MediaWiki's, e.g. it does not allow links like [PreReleaseChecklist/0.82/zenog zenog] or [PreReleaseChecklist0.82zenog zenog]
12:32 szabgab e.g.  can padre open a perl script that has no extension and does Padre recognize it as a perl file?
12:32 ispy_ joined #padre
12:33 szabgab zenog: it has something like [wiki:bla]
12:33 szabgab but I Am sure it is less flexible than mediawiki
12:33 szabgab fenderson: how would you test the above? that padre recognize a file as a perl script?
12:34 zenog szabgab: works with the wiki: prefix, thanks!
12:34 szabgab other ideas: pick one of the bugs we had (closed tickets) and write the instructions to check if that bug exists
12:35 szabgab fenderson: ^^^^
12:36 fenderson szabgab: i'll check on the 3rd mime if it writes Perl 5 i'll save it and than open and and check if it says on the 3rd mime Perl 5
12:36 szabgab fenderson: something like that
12:36 fenderson szabgab: thats what i got when i read the page
12:36 szabgab but it need to be explained in a way people with little background (or half asleep) can understand
12:37 fenderson and i can also try F5
12:37 fenderson to open it
12:37 szabgab F5 does not open a file
12:37 szabgab I hope
12:37 szabgab it runs it
12:37 fenderson no it does not
12:37 fenderson yea
12:37 szabgab but yes, you could try that too
12:37 fenderson and if its a perl script(without mistakes) it should run
12:37 szabgab and you can make yourself familiar with trac in general
12:38 szabgab and editing its wiki
12:38 szabgab there is a sandbox in the wiki where you can play
12:38 fenderson wait i want to find it
12:39 szabgab waiting...
12:40 szabgab man, I need to find some idea that people want to learn so I can go to various countries and train that stuff
12:40 fenderson cant find padre's trac
12:41 szabgab fenderson: I think you should collect the links in a file for yourself
12:41 szabgab as people have already pointed to the trac several times
12:41 fenderson yea i know but i'm confused

12:52 szabgab I am sure people here will be able to direct you further
12:52 fenderson szabgab: one more thing
12:53 fenderson szabgab: by documenting test you mean, writing a page like http://padre.perlide.org/trac/wiki/PreReleaseChecklist
12:53 szabgab zenog: I checked those pages you created
12:54 szabgab but I don't think we should create separate pages for people
12:54 szabgab I think if separating pages that should be by tests or by groups of tests
12:54 szabgab but I am not even sure that's necessary now
12:54 szabgab fenderson: I mean adding more items to that page
12:55 fenderson szabgab: ok
12:55 szabgab or if zenog decides to split the page then write a similar page
12:55 zenog I have no particular opinion on how to split it. What I did this time was to just send around an e-mail with my findings.
12:59 szabgab what about just adding a table under each test case like the one I just added to http://padre.perlide.org/trac/wiki/SandBox ?
13:00 szabgab zenog: but if I see correctly you added two sub-pages to the wiki
13:00 szabgab one for yourself and one for fenderson
13:00 szabgab are those copies of the text or are they somehow connected?
13:03 zenog szabgab: They are not connected, just copied from the main template.
13:04 zenog Of course we should also add the date + revision to avoid confusion ...
13:32 danlucraft left #padre
13:32 danlucraft joined #padre
14:15 szabgab zenog: I don't understand the idea behind having the same text copied to several places
14:16 szabgab what if you change one of the copies?
14:20 zenog szabgab: Nothing happens. It is like having a checklist on paper in the real world.
14:20 zenog szabgab: You get the paper and make your ticks. If the template changes, it does not affect the test run.
14:25 zenog szabgab: It is very simple, not to say "primitive" ;-)
14:26 szabgab Wouldn't it be better to have only one page (maybe one page for each test) and allow each person to add their comments to it?
14:26 szabgab They could also maintain a personal notes page if they wanted
14:27 szabgab but I don't see a value in keeping the instuction on how to run a test case in severl copies that will just get different by each change
14:34 zenog But for making a release, it will be much harder going over all the different test pages. If you have one test protocol per tester+release, you only need to go over these.
14:34 zenog Also, there is not really a need to modify the checklist once the test has started.
14:35 zenog I know it is disturbingly simple and involves copy+pasting, but my guess is that it is much easier to handle this than to handle dozens of pages with different tests.
14:35 szabgab so let's keep the whole thing in one page for now
14:36 szabgab that way you will also be able to keep a "paper trail" of what has been tested, by whom and on which platform?
14:38 zenog no, but if we want to have real reporting etc., we should really try litmus.
14:38 zenog The wiki-based thing is enough for doing the release testing, because then you would only need to check N reports (N=number of testers); but not for general reporting.
14:41 szabgab I was already trying to install it but got distracted by work :(
14:41 szabgab it = Litmus
14:42 szabgab OTOH I have not tried to use the one used by Firefox so I am not sure if it will fit our needs
14:42 szabgab zenog: have you tried it?
14:42 zenog Same problem here ... need to work today ;-)
14:42 zenog szabgab: nope, just heard rindolf++'s report on it.
14:45 szabgab btw what I think about these test use cases is that they could be easily turned into documentations
14:46 szabgab and show cases of features of padre
14:47 szabgab and if we think about reporting, the individual reporting pages could contain only the report data but not the next of the specific use cases
14:47 szabgab thet would eliminate the duplication of the text
14:59 zenog Yes, it would eliminate the duplication, but it is much easier to fill in if you only have to look at one document. It also makes errors+mistakes less likely, in a low-tech way ;-)
15:05 szabgab I give up :)
15:05 szabgab at least I added titles to the original document and chnaged the tests a bith
15:06 szabgab I think we need more specific instructions there
15:06 daxim left #padre
15:06 szabgab fenderson: are you writing us more test cases?
15:08 Sewi Opera has a feature voting system: http://my.opera.com/community/forums/topic.dml?id=109437
15:09 Sewi Might be an idea for Padre, too?
15:24 zenog Sewi: Yeah, but rather "feature" vs. "feature", not "Would this feature be nice" (almost all features would be nice ;-)
15:24 Sewi :)
15:26 szabgab hmm, once we started something like that but never got anywhere
15:27 szabgab but it now gave me a stupid idea
15:27 szabgab maybe Padre could actually fetchall the open tickets from trac (or via a proxy) and let the users show all that in some way
15:28 szabgab maybe Pade could have a message window that will show messages from the development team)
15:28 Sewi A trac ticket client within Padre would be nice, we could get correct version info on all tickets
15:28 szabgab eg our commit messages or changes in tickets
15:28 asarch joined #padre
15:29 szabgab to let people know more about the things we are doing
15:29 szabgab maybe we could include a file with listing all the open tickets in padre
15:30 szabgab maybe we could add a feature "report a bug" to padre that would collect some data from the user and submit the bug report/feature request
15:36 dapatrick joined #padre
15:39 szabgab Sewi: we don't need a full blown trac client that I thought first and there is Net::Trac
15:39 szabgab but it depends on Moose
15:40 szabgab so I think Alias will not want it in our core :)
15:40 szabgab actually it might use Mause as well
15:40 szabgab I thik
