08:18 fenderson azawawi:  good morning
08:19 Sewi hi azawawi, do we actually use the new scintilla version in recent padre trunk?
08:19 azawawi nop it is still under construction
08:20 azawawi I was able to compile the DLL yesterday with the same compiler flags
08:20 azawawi ofcourse after studying Alien::wxWidgets output a lot :)
08:21 azawawi Alien::wxWidgets can be used to compile a custom version of wxWidgets btw
08:21 azawawi WXDIR environment variable but i have not tried it yet
08:22 azawawi today hopefully i will be able to do the Perl-XS binding
08:23 azawawi My objective is to simply replace our @ISA = 'Wx::StyledTextCtrl';  with Wx::StyledTextCtrlUpgraded or something like that
08:23 azawawi that's what only be changed in Padre
08:23 azawawi s/only/should only/
08:25 azawawi we can play it smarter also by conditionally loading either Wx::StyleTextCtrlUpgraded if Wx::Scintilla is installed
08:25 azawawi or wxWidgets's Wx::StyledTextCtrl
08:26 szabgab azawawi: that would provide a lighter way to upgrade
08:26 azawawi szabgab: yeah
08:26 szabgab at lest at the beginning that would be good
08:26 azawawi szabgab: until we can make sure Wx::Scintilla installs correctly on most machines
08:27 szabgab azawawi++
08:27 azawawi thanks
08:29 azawawi when you play with C compilation, you remember the old days... generate the object files in the same place... no blib folder... kinda sucks a bit :)
08:30 szabgab I am sure it has its own beauty :)
08:32 azawawi Especially after seeing how many patches mbarbon++ applies to wxWidgets for it to compile... :)
08:33 azawawi Part of it is related to the very long wxWidgets release schedule ofcourse
09:32 user_9386 joined #padre
09:35 azawawi left #padre
09:41 szabgab hi user_9386 can we help you?
09:42 El_Che you sound like a computer :)
09:43 szabgab beep beep
09:44 szabgab I am trying to understand what are interns doing?
09:44 user_9386 left #padre
09:44 szabgab ok, I see that was it
09:45 szabgab I frightened away another user :(
09:47 szabgab El_Che: so how would I say that as a human?
09:52 bowtie joined #padre
09:53 El_Che it's the user_nr that sounds robotic, not you per se
09:54 szabgab El_Che: that's why I usually ask them to set their nick
09:54 zenog szabgab: In marketing, you should always use open questions, like "How can we help you?" or "If there is something we can do to help you, just ask."
09:54 zenog szabgab: Asking for the nick change is a very good thing. Makes it much more personal ...
09:54 zenog s/marketing/sales/
09:55 szabgab I am not in sales
09:55 szabgab and I got 60 in my marketing class
09:55 zenog me neither ;-)
09:55 szabgab but back to my quiestion, any of you ever worked in a place with interns?
09:55 zenog szabgab: I was an intern.
09:55 szabgab great
09:55 szabgab for how long and what did that mean?
09:56 szabgab (btw how can I change the color of the highlighting in irssi ? I have white background here with bright yellow highlighting
09:57 szabgab and my name is written in white, aka secret ink)
09:57 zenog I was working there for a five-month period, and I developed a web-based information system for one of the subsidiary companies, plus some support in issues like e-learning and company websites.
09:58 azawawi joined #padre
09:58 szabgab yeah, I change the setting of my Konsol !!! now I can see :)
09:58 szabgab zenog: was that a paid thing or free?
09:59 szabgab and were you there full time or part time?
09:59 zenog szabgab: http://irssi.org/themes
09:59 zenog szabgab: paid and full time
09:59 szabgab zenog: I changed the Konsole and it is now ok, I have black background and I can see this way
10:00 zenog We also supervise students here at the university, they have shorter non-paid internships (but usually full-time)
10:00 szabgab ok, I'll ask you about the payment later and in private :) but I wonder, did you get help (supervision, mentoring?)
10:00 zenog Some people also do part-time internships, but we don't call that an internship ;-)
10:01 szabgab I am debating with myself the idea to offer some internship for people to work on open source projects
10:02 azawawi http://svn.perlide.org/padre/trunk/Padre/share/examples/wx/30_editor.pl   # first test subject for Wx::ScintillaTextCtrl, szabgab++ :)
10:02 azawawi found my first victim... :)
10:02 azawawi second one will be Padre...
10:05 zenog In IT, internships are usually paid, which is the right thing.
10:05 szabgab obviously(?) I won't be able to pay, and probably I don't want either, - if open source developers can go without payment then they interns can do the same
10:05 jazzanova left #padre
10:05 zenog szabgab: The Summer of Code would be some kind of internship, too.
10:06 szabgab yeah, I just thought about it
10:06 zenog szabgab: You could also call it "project mentoring".
10:06 zenog szabgab: Good thing about GSoC is that it is paid (not by you ;-)
10:06 szabgab the question - if not payment - then what would the interns get out of it?
10:07 zenog experience
10:07 szabgab yeah that can be a direction (GSOC) but I am not sure how to handle it really
10:07 zenog szabgab: Is there additional overhead with GSoC compared to "normal" internships.
10:07 zenog szabgab: Would the internship be local or remote?
10:08 szabgab I guess there is some paperwork with Google
10:08 Sewi They get experience and some kind of (electronic) paper that they should show companies when they try to get a job later
10:08 szabgab and as I understand that needs some specific project
10:08 szabgab to be implemented
10:08 szabgab while I'd probably direct the person to learn tools she needs (svn, git, trac, etc)
10:08 zenog The Padre debugger ;-)
10:09 szabgab zenog: I am afraid it would be hard for someone with little experience
10:09 azawawi szabgab: any idea why Wx samples cannot be run from inside Padre (but works in external window) ?
10:09 zenog szabgab: You mean GSoC is for more advanced people?
10:09 szabgab azawawi: there is a ticket with that
10:10 szabgab #962
10:10 Hyppolit #962: Execution of Wx script is brocken on Windows (new defect) [ http://padre.perlide.org/trac/ticket/962#comment:3 ]
10:10 szabgab zenog: and internship would not be location specific
10:11 szabgab zenog: I am not sure if Gsoc is for more advanced people but implementing the debugger is, I think
10:12 zenog szabgab: As far I understand, gsoc is for people who have the talent and motivation to get something done in a given period of time.
10:12 szabgab I don't see many projects in padre that can be done - as a project - by a beginner
10:12 zenog szabgab: If I understand it right, it is paid and supposed to be sort-of full-time.
10:12 szabgab zenog: and I think about 2 montsh
10:13 zenog szabgab: Having a nicer CPAN browser/client would work if they know some Perl.
10:13 zenog szabgab: It is not that hard, I think.
10:13 szabgab there already was such a GSOC project
10:13 zenog szabgab: It is also separate from the rest of Padre, and could be easily turned into a graphical CPAN-client (standalone)
10:14 szabgab though it was a stand alone wx based CPAN client
10:14 szabgab and it is in CPAN
10:14 zenog szabgab: If it is good, we can just call it from Padre?
10:14 szabgab but I think it never reached the usabel and reusable state
10:15 szabgab zenog: you are welcome to try to find it
10:15 szabgab the mentor was lightking
10:15 zenog Google did not come up with something ...
10:15 szabgab the guy who wrote Kephra
10:16 zenog neither search.cpan.org ...
10:16 szabgab I woinder how many Gsoc projects have resulted in something that went on living further

10:17 szabgab CPANPLUS-Shell-Wx
10:18 zenog looks a bit incomplete and inactive ...
10:19 szabgab that's my point
10:19 szabgab and now as I think about it, I am not sure how much GSoc teaches you how to be part of a project
10:20 szabgab what are the skills companies are looking for in a Perl developer?
10:21 zenog I guess you need to ask companies for that ;-)
10:21 zenog But probably the same ones as for any other developer. In the end, Perl is one of many tools.
10:21 szabgab indeed I will, but some of you do work at companies, don't you?
10:25 zenog azawawi, Sewi?
10:25 zenog (the guys working in companies do not have so much time to hang out in IRC)

10:27 azawawi zenog: Java shop... so cannot really answer
10:27 zenog azawawi: But you also have developers, right? What about general skills?
10:27 azawawi ok :)
10:28 azawawi being an interviewer, i'll answer
10:28 azawawi first of all, OO skills
10:28 azawawi second, database skills
10:28 azawawi third, language features
10:29 azawawi fourth, frameworks that may interest my current project
10:29 azawawi most projects involve a database, and a web application
10:30 azawawi so if the database skills are miserable, then he's out
10:30 azawawi i also throw a couple of profiling/performance problems
10:31 azawawi i mostly care for the way he's thinking
10:31 azawawi in solving problems
10:32 azawawi you can have a Java/Perl/... name your language programmer but his/her problem solving skills sucks
10:32 azawawi and doesnt know how to deal with databases
10:32 azawawi i.e. big datasets
10:33 azawawi zenog: done :)
10:34 zenog azawawi++
10:35 zenog azawawi: What about things like version control, ticket systems, etc.?
10:35 zenog azawawi: Or are they not critical because easy to learn by people who know the rest?
10:35 azawawi 1 min plz # eating ... :)
10:37 waxhead evening all
10:37 waxhead shall we aim for a release this weekend?
10:37 zenog hi waxhead
10:37 azawawi waxhead: good evening
10:37 azawawi zenog: they're a plus
10:38 azawawi zenog: the problem solving skills are the most important
10:38 azawawi zenog: the next one is how you deal with data in an efficient and safe manner
10:39 azawawi zenog: and ofcourse scalable
10:40 bowtie zenog: I
10:40 azawawi bowtie: hi there. Thanks for your reply
10:42 bowtie zenog: opps.   to add I like to know if they understand negative logic for finding, as I find it a faster method
10:42 bowtie opps falt finding
10:43 azawawi zenog: i also care for how he/she deals with source code, not the language
10:43 azawawi zenog: maintenance-wise
10:44 daxim joined #padre
10:45 bowtie zenog: I have found PBP with all its traits, good or bad helps re-enforce a common style
10:48 zenog bowtie: Having a style guide is good, yes.
10:52 El_Che lo, I have a perl program taht generates retrievable 'random' passwords (e.g. as a backup root password when you use ssh keys) and connects to all servers to change sets the new password. I want to make the execution parallel (ssh + expect + passwd under the covers). Any pointers? forks is the easiest, maybe threads, other things?
10:52 bowtie zenog: it helps remind them, they are part of something bigger,
10:52 szabgab El_Che: POE?
10:53 bowtie El_Che: threads but you cant profile your code
10:53 El_Che haven't worked with it yet. I once read some docs but had a hard time grasping the concept
10:54 szabgab waxhead: IMHO you can branch now and relaes in 7 days, or did you have something else in your mind?
10:55 szabgab azawawi: so how would you improve the problem solving capability of someone?
10:56 waxhead szabgab, just running the tests under RELEASE_TESTING=1
10:56 szabgab waxhead: it fails n my server at xt/actions.t but passes on my desktop
10:56 szabgab n/on
10:57 waxhead szabgab, passes here...
10:57 waxhead good enough for me to branch then...
10:57 szabgab waxhead: then enjoy :)
10:58 waxhead I'm not to rebuild the messages.pot file anymore am I?
10:58 szabgab no need to do that
10:58 szabgab there is a cron job called szabgab that does it :)
10:59 shadowpaste "daxim" at 217.168.150.38 pasted "Result: FAIL t/01-load.t (Wstat: 11 Tests: 24 Failed: 0)" (37 lines) at http://paste.scsys.co.uk/92112
10:59 waxhead what about tidying?

11:00 szabgab waxhead: you can try it but it should be clean
11:00 szabgab or tidy
11:00 waxhead :)
11:00 szabgab daxim: does the same failure happen on trunk?
11:01 daxim I don't know
11:01 zenog waxhead: Can you wait 30 minutes with the branch?
11:01 szabgab daxim: oh I had that failure a while ago
11:01 waxhead zenog, sure..
11:01 zenog waxhead: Then I'll update the German translation, so you do not have to merge it later ;-)
11:01 szabgab I think was due to a lack of some C-ish dependancy
11:01 waxhead zenog, oh.. if you update the branch it's a simple merge
11:02 waxhead the only problem merge I had was the one where someone updated both branch and trunk
11:02 waxhead daxim, passes here fine.
11:03 daxim note that's the 0.82 from cpan
11:03 shadowpaste "waxhead" at 217.168.150.38 pasted "tests pass" (53 lines) at http://paste.scsys.co.uk/92113

11:04 azawawi szabgab: sorry for being away a bit
11:04 szabgab I have a book at home "The school of Problem Solving" or some such title
11:05 azawawi szabgab: same as math... you practice more... some people are more natural than others ofcourse :)

13:42 szabgab I should have changed the GUI to reflect that better

13:44 szabgab bowtie: I think that should be working already
13:45 szabgab fenderson: so are you doing the test-cases or are you stuck on something?
13:47 fenderson test cases
13:47 fenderson also i talked to Sewi
13:47 fenderson and i think i do the test cases on windows also
13:47 fenderson i have a windows virtual box
13:47 fenderson windows XP
13:48 zenog hm, I get a strange error message: "Can't locate package Padre::Task::Syntax for @Padre::Document::LaTeX::Syntax::ISA at /usr/local/share/perl/5.10.1/Padre/TaskThread.pm line 111."
13:48 zenog Does not happen for the Perl syntax check ...
13:49 Sewi Maybe the latext plugin is too old?
13:50 zenog No, yesterday it worked
13:50 fenderson szabgab:
13:50 Sewi Ok, this is strange :-) I guess you already tried perl -MPadre::Task::Syntax -e ''
13:50 fenderson when will padre 0.84 will be out?
13:50 zenog /usr/local/share/perl/5.10.1/Padre/Task/Syntax.pm is there
13:51 szabgab fenderson: that would good to do it on windows as well but you need to fill the page of the test cases so we will know about your progress
13:51 szabgab fenderson: mailing list?
13:51 fenderson ?
13:51 szabgab fenderson: read the mailing list
13:51 fenderson wow thats alottttttt

13:51 zenog Sewi: no complaints from perl -e
13:52 fenderson Sewi: ok :)
13:52 Sewi zenog: Next try: use P:T:S is missing? (Sorry, I didn't look at the source)
13:52 zenog Sewi: that is a possibility ...

14:03 zenog hm. no time now to fix the XML stuff ... maybe tonight ...
14:20 bowtie szabgab: silly me, i did not realise %p => Project name, actually displays session name, Session != Project ??
14:26 szabgab bowtie: I don't think that should be the case

14:37 szabgab bowtie: I don't know if we have sucha thing as "project name" in padre
14:37 szabgab it might be the directory name in which the project was found
14:38 Alias There's no project name concept yet
14:38 szabgab so what about defaulting it to the directory name?
14:38 Alias It would be wrong most of the project
14:38 Alias er
14:38 Alias It would be wrong most of the time
14:38 szabgab it would be 'trunk' for many projects :)
14:38 Alias That too :)
14:38 szabgab but I am not sure
14:38 Alias I have half of the solution
14:39 szabgab in your repository and in padre it would be correct
14:39 Alias There's the project primary file
14:39 Alias I forget the exact API term
14:39 Alias oh right
14:39 Alias The project ->headline
14:39 bowtie all: tools->prefs->apperance->status bar,
14:40 szabgab bowtie: pls file that %p incorrect name as a ticket
14:40 Alias ->headline is supposed to intuit the single most important or representative file for the project
14:40 szabgab Makefile.PL ?
14:40 Alias So for Foo-Bar/trunk as a root, it SHOULD find lib/Foo/Bar.pm
14:41 Alias The idea being that once you know the headline file, you should be able to scan it for interesting things
14:41 szabgab and then the name of the project is Bar   or Foo-Bar  ?
14:41 Alias The name of the project would then be whatever is in =head1 NAME in the headline file
14:42 szabgab oh, so you also include some pod parsing there
14:42 Alias For the Perl project type anyways
14:42 Alias Right
14:42 Alias Deep intuition
14:42 Alias That's the concept at least
14:42 Alias I noticed when I write modules, I almost always do
14:42 Alias use inc::Module::Install;
14:42 Alias all_from lib/Foo/Bar.pm
14:42 bowtie szabgab: ok, I will log a ticket, shortly, It's Tea time now
14:42 Alias Very common pattern
14:43 Alias So lacking more specific information, Padre should just emulate that kind of preference for ordinary Perl dist looking things
14:43 Alias Also gives it a shot at finding copyright year, using that file to determine tab and newline preferences for the project as a whole
14:44 Alias So making a new file in an existing project inherits the preferences of the headline file for the project
14:44 Alias Which should, most of the time, be what people expect
14:44 jnap joined #padre
14:44 Alias Just haven't gotten around to implementing that yet
14:45 Alias Been distracted with performance on slow filesystems
14:45 Alias I think I've covered the low-hanging fruit for that now
14:45 Alias Startup and general responsiveness is much faster now
14:45 Alias Although I was saddened to see we're putting title and status bar hooks into on_key :(
14:46 Alias That can get really freaking expensive
14:46 Alias Seems like an abuse of the titlebar to put the current function name in it
14:49 zenog Alias: It is not possible for the title bar, but that is not documented ...
14:49 Alias I wouldn't mind removing configurable title bar entirely
14:49 Alias And just going back to Padre
14:52 zenog Alias: Filename by itself also does not hurt - you would only need to change it if the tab is changed or the file is renamed.
14:52 Alias right
14:52 Alias This all started because someone wanted the session tab group name there
14:53 Alias Which I find annoying personally, because I don't use sessions
14:53 Alias So most of the time it's just a pointless Padre []
14:53 szabgab Alias: the title bar is not on_key as far as I remember
14:53 Alias ok
14:54 Alias But I think one of the %x letters can end up doing stat or something can't it?
14:54 szabgab and in the status bar it is only called if there is a tag that needs it
14:54 Alias ok
14:54 szabgab so the one who wants will pay :)
14:54 szabgab at least that was my intention
14:56 szabgab but that [] sould be also gone, if it is empty
14:58 Alias That would be nice
