06:49 HansBKK Perl noob here - running latest Strawberry portable - is it true "cpan padre" should automagically install everything I need?
06:50 HansBKK Or do I have to go through the dwimperl packages and install all that as well?
06:51 HansBKK Or should I just install dwimperl and then try to turn it into a "portable" setup with a batch file to set the EnVars?
06:51 sewi Hi Hans
06:51 HansBKK Path and term I know about, anything else?
06:51 HansBKK Hi sewi
06:51 sewi cpan Padre should be ok
06:51 sewi dwim has everything you need, might be easier to install that.
06:52 HansBKK but I need to move to different PCs where I can't install anything, hence my desire for "portability" in the windoze sense
06:53 HansBKK Usually FOSS *nix-heritage stuff doesn't require registry entries, just Path and other EnVars should be sufficient to make dwimperl portable you think?
06:53 sewi Try "cpan padre", should be ok
06:53 HansBKK I like using the current rather than 7-mo-old Strawberry too
06:54 HansBKK Any valuable stuff from dwim that cpan won't auto-load as pre-requisites for Padre?
07:01 HansBKK I see Moose Task::Kensho Dancer Template::Toolkit  are part of Padre rather than dwim
07:01 sewi Yes, but Padre doesn't need them.
07:02 sewi I don't really know about the Wx state of Strawberry, this might become a problem.
07:02 sewi Everything else should come with "cpan padre"
07:14 HansBKK Thanks sewi, I'm running it now, if necessary I'll research how to "cpan Wx-stuff" if that turns out necessary as a separate step.
07:14 sewi Great
07:16 HansBKK I've also just posted a ticket recommend the next dwim be based on the portable flavor of strawberry, I don't see what an MSI-style install buys in this case anyway, but them I'm pretty anti-registry biased myself. . .

09:51 simbabque_ Hi folks. If I mark text with the mouse in Padre on Windows it gets copied to the clipboard immediately, just like on Linux. Can I turn that off somehow?
09:51 simbabque_ It's a bit frustrating if you're used to windows behaviour.
09:52 sewi Hi simbabque_, there has been a config option for this behaviour
09:53 sewi I think it's Settings -> Behaviour -> Editor -> X11 setting
09:53 simbabque_ That's great, thanks sewi. I'll try that out. Don't have it on this machine right now.
09:54 sewi simbabque_: It's just a guess but worth a try :)
09:54 simbabque_ It sounds rights ;)

10:46 HansBKK Hi. Boy that cpan padre sure took a long time, and ended up with tests failing. I tried a few things, then figured I've probably messed things up, so reset back to generic starting point.
10:47 HansBKK I'm thinking of doing this: http://padre.perlide.org/trac/wiki/DownloadStrawberryPerl
10:47 HansBKK but it doesn't look up to date to me. I don't even know what .PAR means, but fast and easier sounds good.
10:48 HansBKK The other strategy (pursuing now) is to just CPAN GET all the modules first, as that seems to be the main time-suck, and then take a snapshot before starting the install?
10:49 HansBKK Is running an install with the "notest" option a sure recipe for later problems?

12:20 HansBKK OK now zipping up a portable perl dirtree that's 550MB fatter than the base Strawberry install. . .
12:21 HansBKK Any point in doing "CPAN test" first as opposed to going straight to install? What about order?
12:25 HansBKK OK since I'm talking to myself here anyway I'll put in my command sequence so y'll can tell me where I went wrong when you wake up
12:25 HansBKK cpan> test Alien::wxWidgets
12:26 HansBKK cpan> install Alien::wxWidgets
12:27 HansBKK Alien::wxWidgets is up to date (0.61)  -  so I take it that test implies install?
12:27 HansBKK install Wx
12:31 HansBKK long one - putting the kids to bed. . .
12:39 bowtie HansBKK, hi
12:39 bowtie don't for get to update the wiki page, or new your choice
12:40 bowtie we do read, but some times later
12:42 bowtie test are my install scripts for keeping up with perl bleed, you my find useful https://github.com/kevindawson/Dusty
12:43 bowtie HansBKK, keep up the good effort
12:43 bowtie HansBKK++
12:44 HansBKK sorry no idea what you're referring to
12:44 HansBKK no idea what I'm doing muddling along, what would I update a wiki with?
12:45 HansBKK perl bleed?
12:45 HansBKK any chance of clearing up some of the confusion implied in my posts, or answering a direct Q or two there?
12:45 HansBKK would be appreciated. . .
12:47 bowtie HansBKK, you mentioned earler about a wiki page being out of date and starting a new one, please do so
12:49 HansBKK I have no idea whether it is or not, just said it looked like it.
12:49 bowtie as for assistance, I myself use Linux, so will read and listen, others here my be of more help to you with strawberries
12:49 HansBKK I'm a total noob, crashing and burning, can't get Padre installed here, not ready to write any docs. . .
12:49 HansBKK Searching configuration for: wxWidgets (any version) for (any toolkit); compiler compatibility: (any compiler ) (any version);  Available configurations: No wxWidgets build found dmake.exe:  Error code 130, while making 'wxt_fix_alien'   MDOOTSON/Wx-0.9912.tar.gz   D:\aasync\PortableApps\CommonFiles\perl\c\bin\dmake.exe -- NOT OK Running make test   Can't tes
12:50 HansBKK Running make test   Can't test without successful make Running make install   Make had returned bad status, install seems impossible Stopping: 'install' failed for 'M/MD/MDOOTSON/Wx-0.9912.tar.gz'. Failed during this command:   MDOOTSON/Wx-0.9912.tar.gz                    : make NO
12:50 simbabque_ left #padre
12:51 bowtie have you tried, Perl -V and checked the output is what you expect
12:51 HansBKK other than all the GETs, only did  install Alien::wxWidgets (which seemed OK) and install Wx
12:52 bowtie just 'perl -V' on cmd line
12:52 HansBKK no idea what to look for, other than the fact that there is no other perl active, and it's 5.16 as per the download
12:53 HansBKK is this it? uname='Win32 strawberry-perl 5.16.1.1 #1 Thu Aug  9 09:54:46 2012 i386'
12:53 bowtie good, I have noted from previous comments here, that it is sometimes of help
12:55 HansBKK so any suggestions other than just trying to run the same command again? "install Wx" that is
12:55 bowtie if you want to show use the output please no-paste with http://scsys.co.uk:8001
12:57 shadowpaste "HansBKK" at 217.168.150.38 pasted "output of perl -V" (57 lines) at http://paste.scsys.co.uk/208369
12:58 bowtie on linux we need to have some dev files install, see http://padre.perlide.org/trac/wiki/DownloadUbuntu do you need similar ?
12:59 HansBKK I don't see how, as there isn't anything like Wx stuff on Windows to start with, everything must be supplied from CPAN as a self-contained package
13:01 bowtie did -> cpan Alien::wxWidgets install ok
13:01 bowtie did -> cpan Wx install ok
13:02 HansBKK Alien::wxWidgets yes
13:03 bowtie good
13:03 HansBKK Wx no, see the two posts above your "have you tried perl -v" above
13:03 bowtie can you no-paste the output of cpan Wx please
13:03 HansBKK although the error message seems to say no wsWidgets found? it said the tests passed
13:04 HansBKK it takes a long time, why don't I do both, the first one's pretty quick
13:05 HansBKK previous question > I take it that test implies install?
13:05 HansBKK This time I'm running install, not test
13:05 bowtie if Alien::wxWidgets and Wx are installed you should be able to install, cpan Wx::Scintilla
13:05 HansBKK result: Alien::wxWidgets is up to date (0.61)
13:06 HansBKK install Wx
13:07 HansBKK doing DEL 1/2, so looks like re-trying the whole thing. Yes when I get past Wx I plan to do Scintilla
13:07 bowtie try Wx::Scintilla
13:08 HansBKK install Wx is still on DEL 1/2, believe that means it's deleting (uninstalling?) Alien-wxWidgets
13:09 HansBKK might be 5-10 minutes, hear my kids' ruckus upstairs will try to get them settled - past their bedtime - and check back shortly
13:09 HansBKK BTW thanks for your help so far. . .
13:10 bowtie thanks ok, I will be back later, I guess 2 hours, bye for now
13:13 HansBKK "WX is not a known MakeMaker parameter name" ??
13:16 HansBKK I'm thinking maybe looks like Wx should be installed before the Alien-wxWidgets, probably bring the latter in as a dependency anyway? Seems implied by the DELeting happening before the make can start.
13:28 itcharlie joined #padre
13:28 HansBKK OK!    Wx is up to date (0.9912)   8-)
13:29 HansBKK now for > install Wx::Scintilla
13:38 HansBKK Wx::Scintilla is up to date (0.39)    8-)
13:56 HansBKK > test Padre is causing 132 DEL (delete?) for all the modules I did a GET for before. . .
13:56 HansBKK I have no idea if that's good bad or indifferent. . .
14:50 bowtie HansBKK, how's it going
14:50 kaare joined #padre
14:51 HansBKK Stopping: 'test' failed for 'Test::Class'. Failed during this command:  ADIE/Test-Class-0.37.tar.gz                  : make_test NO
14:51 HansBKK bleh 8-(
14:52 HansBKK that was a "test Padre", now trying an "install Padre", still don't know if the former implies the latter, wouldn't have thought so. . .
14:57 HansBKK At this point tending toward using the older DWIM distro, and seeing if I can make that "portable" - hopefully it just needs the enVars - three folders added to the "Path" and "term".
14:58 HansBKK Any ideas about a "HOME"? I can't use the windoze equivalent, but have a portable Cygwin on the same drive whose home I can use. . .
14:59 bowtie HansBKK, is Test::Class your only issue
15:01 HansBKK t\die-in-setup.t ............... 1/1 #   Failed test 'die in setup caused test method to fail'   at t\die-in-setup.t line 28. STDERR is:  Failed test 'setup_method (for test method 'test') died (oops - we died)' at t\die-in-setup.t line 27. (in Foo->setup_method)
15:02 HansBKK don't know if that's just a different slant on the same failure? The ending message was the same as last time, this most recent one I happened to catch a few screens before the end
15:02 HansBKK what are the implications of using fforce?
15:03 bowtie HansBKK, you can euther force Debug::Client or try -> http://cpan.metacpan.org/authors/id/B/BO/BOWTIE/Debug-Client-0.21_11.tar.gz which dose not  require Test::Class
15:05 HansBKK Sorry I don't have any idea what Debug::Client is, how it relates to what failed, or how to make use of a tar.gz from CPAN.
15:06 HansBKK If you're willing to step me through whatever you think best I'd appreciate it
15:06 bowtie hold on, I will get you the link
15:06 HansBKK Or I can go the dwim route
15:07 HansBKK Which I can probably muddle along on my own, being standard windows environment issues (I think/hope).
15:08 bowtie HansBKK, read this -> http://irclog.perlgeek.de/padre/2012-09-05#i_5963181
15:08 HansBKK looking under cpan\build I see the version is Debug-Client-0.20-a2HtIz
15:08 HansBKK is using a newer one going to cause an issue?
15:08 HansBKK will do
15:10 bowtie you can force Debug::Client, the error is Test::Class and strawberry, Alias was/is maintainer for strawberry
15:10 HansBKK Oh cool you mean I've been bit by a "known known" issue, much more reassuring
15:11 HansBKK and new rev's most likely OK?
15:13 bowtie Debug::Client (D-C) ver 0.21_11 has had Test::Class removed as a dependency, works with Padre 0.96 and 0.97+ see http://padre.perlide.org/trac/wiki/Features/Perl5Debugger
15:14 HansBKK found this as well http://www.perlmonks.org/?node_id=988271
15:14 bowtie the easyist way to install dev releases is to do -> cpanm http://cpan.metacpan.org/authors/id/B/BO/BOWTIE/Debug-Client-0.21_11.tar.gz
15:16 HansBKK didn't your link state that that version of debug only works with the .97 Padre? I'm going for current stable .96 right? Problem?
15:17 bowtie HansBKK, thanks for the link, I had better release 0.21_11 as 0.22 and inform the monks
15:18 HansBKK I can't take credit for anything but google foo, no idea what issue that information caused you to realize, but you're welcome 8-)
15:19 HansBKK Wait - bowtie. I can't believe the very issue that caused my problem - you're the dev. Mind = blown.
15:20 HansBKK I've got to try this IRC thing again sometime, magic or what?
15:20 HansBKK OK no more questioning, copy and paste here we go with 0.21_11
15:21 HansBKK FYI: IO-Socket-IP-0.17 (upgraded from 0.16)
15:35 HansBKK Seems to be stuck on "Building and testing", both CPU cores practically pegged for 15 minutes or so now. . .
15:39 bowtie HansBKK, it always makes sense to ask the question in the right place, as for the monks, I have added a comment to there issue. they could have opened a ticket in our trac /wiki
15:40 HansBKK OK
15:40 bowtie HansBKK, by mind-blowing, are you referring to hitch-hikers-guide or big-bang-theory
15:40 HansBKK = amazed
15:41 HansBKK also at the fact that I watched HHG last night with my kids for the first time
15:41 HansBKK synchronicity
15:41 HansBKK back to brass tacks, I've aborted the cpanm
15:41 HansBKK should I clean up before trying again? or maybe just do the force on the .20 version?
15:42 bowtie read the cpanm man and use a -v option for verbose :)
15:44 bowtie it's good to here you are educating your children, in the ways of Douglas Adams.
15:46 HansBKK I had to hard kill both instances of perl.exe, the Ctrl-C had terminated the batch file but they'd both kept the CPUs pegged.
15:46 HansBKK Yes, at 4 and 6 years old respectively. My boy loved Zaphod's name.
15:47 bowtie was this the new film or original BBC series
15:47 bowtie or even better the tapes, from radio broad cast
15:49 HansBKK I'd watched the BBC series in Australia around '81, stoner days for me, remember my nose about three inches from the screen trying to catch the scrolling text from the babelfish bit
15:49 HansBKK This was the new one, which I didn't even realize existed until I put it on.
15:50 bowtie later you will be able to get them the HHG trilogy in 5 parts for the library
15:50 HansBKK Decent casting, haven't IMDBd the voiceovers which I think I recognized, bad guy in Harry Potter?
15:51 HansBKK or the pilot crashed in the desert in that romantic, also last days cyberpunk VR dealer. . .
15:51 HansBKK OK cpanm -fi just worked, back to CPAN prompt - install the other dependencies first?
15:53 HansBKK actually looks like they stuck, going straight to Padre again
15:54 HansBKK BTW even best - the book. . .
15:59 HansBKK alan rickman (snape)
16:04 HansBKK not rafe fines - highly recommend Strange Days if you haven't yet, very dated now but cool, spot-on casting
16:11 HansBKK t/04_config.t .............. 2/342 #   Failed test '->bin_shell defaults ok' at t/04_config.t line 44.  got: 'D:\aasync\PortableApps\CommonFiles\perl\cmd.exe' expected: 'cmd.exe' Looks like you failed 1 test of 342. Dubious, test returned 1 (wstat 256, 0x100)

16:23 HansBKK sorry no idea what any of that means
16:24 HansBKK Is Alias a package I should install?
16:25 HansBKK That 04_config.t file - should I locate it in my folder tree and replace it with this new one?
16:37 HansBKK I've found a few of them looks like random dir names, e.g. xx\perl\cpan\build\Padre-0.96-CeK7E5\t\04_config.t
