05:49 HansBKK Hi again. Perl/CPAN noob with problems getting Padre installed cleanly on the current Strawberry (portable version). Bowtie got me past Test::Class failing with a new Debug::Client (D-C) ver 0.21_11 (Thanks!)
05:51 HansBKK Next hurdle is 04_config.t failing http://paste.scsys.co.uk/208390, and bowtie pointed me to the current trunk to fix that, but I don't know how being such a noob.
05:53 HansBKK I figure I'm supposed to replace the current 04_config.t with the new one, but my build folder has several different versions Padre (of various packages) I don't know how to clean up, how to tell which folders are the ones actually being used.
05:56 HansBKK Or perhaps I should just use "force" if this issue is just unimportant tests failing? I really don't know the ramifications of using force, don't want to end up with something that will stop working later on.
05:56 HansBKK Or yet another tack, rather than continuing to muck around with this approach (trying to get updated Padre to work with the current Strawberry), another easier but less ideal approach would be for me to just use the DWIM distro.
05:58 HansBKK Problem with that is it isn't designed to be portable, run from a changing-letter external device on hostile machines.
05:58 HansBKK Looks to me like Perl just needs Path and strawberry also mentions TERM=dumb, but I'm wary that the non-portable version might want to use the Registry, or windoze user HOME, which won't work for my use case.
05:59 HansBKK Any and all advice appreciated; I've got to go out a few times in the next 12 hours, but will check back, thanks for any help in advance.
06:01 HansBKK Sorry forgot to post my build folder structure http://paste.scsys.co.uk/208392 , and here's a quick link to the archive http://irclog.perlgeek.de/padre/2012-09-24, although I think I've pretty well summarized here.
06:02 HansBKK I'm not used to IRC so let me know if I should be doing things differently to get help, thanks again.

14:04 HansBKK OK, next round, I just deleted all the Padrexxx folders under build, did a fresh get, replaced the 04_config.t with the trunk version and ran CPAN> install Padre
14:05 HansBKK Lots and lots of error/test failure messages, seems too many other things changed between the "shipping" version and current trunk for this approach to work. 8-(
14:08 HansBKK Next I'll try a "force" install, but still looking for some guidance on the ramifications of that, if y'all are confident these are insignificant test failures no problem otherwise I think I'm better off trying to "portable-ize" the older but known-stable dwim setup. Any feedback at all would be most welcome.

14:46 HansBKK OK, force install seemed to work, but still looking for advice as to whether that's OK.
15:14 HansBKK Actually, spoke too soon - any keystroke at all in the editor window and the whole app closes down.

15:16 HansBKK I see that the result of the installation process is a Padre.exe and Padre.bat in site/bin, and Padre.pm and a Padre folder in site/lib. My next wild-ass guess attempt is to just move all that stuff from a (non-portable installed) DWIM to a current working Strawberry portable setup and see how that goes.

15:43 HansBKK hi
15:45 HansBKK Didn't work (of course) - guess I'm going to have to bit the bullet and try to portable-ize the whole DWIM distro as a unit.
15:46 HansBKK For now at least, would welcome assistance from anyone (patient enough) willing to work with me on getting CPAN> "install Padre" working from the current Strawberry.

17:14 HansBKK OK, that seems to work - just install DWIM to a temp location on a machine where you have rights, copy to your PortableApps location (external drive) then uninstall.
17:15 HansBKK The portable strawberry launcher from the current rev works just fine (or at least so far seems to) with this older, supposed-to-be-installed version.
17:17 HansBKK PS I was considering using ActiveState's, but the PPM repo referenced on the site seems to have disappeared. However aside from that issue, "portable-izing" that flavor of Perl will probably work just the same way, except for their ActiveState-specific tools that may look for registry entries.
17:18 HansBKK Mostly mentioning for the sake of pointing out the Padre site's install instructions for ActiveState need to be updated. . .
17:25 bowtie HansBKK, hi

17:28 HansBKK bowtie have you got a few minutes to answer a couple questions?

18:35 bowtie HansBKK, go for it, but don't forget I don't use ms
18:47 HansBKK Bowtie, when you pointed to the updated 04_config.t, were you implying that I should just replace that one file in the CPAN "get" DL'd package and run install?
18:57 bowtie yes, Alias (adam kennedy) fixed it
18:57 bowtie all padre code is in svn
18:57 bowtie padre wiki browse
19:27 HansBKK Don't know much about svn, but it seems to me that the whole trunk "set" of code is interlinked and would require "CPAN installing" all together (if that's even possible)
19:28 HansBKK Just substituting that one file definitely didn't work, I recall one message along the lines of only a few tests out of hundreds were able to run.
