21:22 rindolf Hi all.
21:23 rindolf Someone is asking about Padre on beginners@perl.org
21:24 rindolf http://www.mail-archive.com/beginners@perl.org/msg115978.html
21:34 mikebg joined #padre
21:35 bowtie mikebg: hi
21:37 mikebg Hi
21:38 mikebg Sorry it took awhile there
21:38 mikebg Kevin
21:38 bowtie mikebg: I think you have some questions
21:38 mikebg Yes.  You saw my email, right?
21:39 bowtie mikebg: so what os and padre version
21:40 mikebg My OS is Windows 7 Home Premium, SP1
21:40 mikebg And my version of Padre is....
21:40 mikebg 0.94
21:41 mikebg Perl is 5.14.2
21:41 bowtie mikebg: so that is dwimperl
21:41 mikebg Yes
21:41 mikebg Which, from my understanding,
21:41 mikebg is Padre + Perl + a whole bunch of other stuff all rolled into one, right?
21:42 mikebg And thus supposedly optimal for beginners?
21:42 bowtie I beleve so
21:42 bowtie now, how to use CPAN is covered in one of the videos, if i remember correctly
21:43 mikebg Is that 100% required to get going, after installing DWIM Perl?
21:43 bowtie as for running hello world, take a look at Tools -> Perfs -> perl5
21:43 bowtie you are looking for the external perl 5 internal 5 check mark
21:44 bowtie just toggle and run
21:44 mikebg Hmm, I don't see "Perfs" under the Tools menu
21:44 mikebg You mean Tools > Preferences
21:45 bowtie yes
21:45 mikebg Then Language - Perl 5?
21:45 bowtie yes
21:45 mikebg It is checked
21:45 mikebg (Use external window for execution)
21:45 bowtie ok uncheck it
21:46 mikebg Nope, didn't do it.
21:46 mikebg Now the "Run Script" option is greyed out after selecting it once.
21:46 mikebg But it didn't do anything.
21:47 mikebg Could this have something to do with the PATH environment variables, for both User and System?  However, I've played around with that, and I'm pretty sure it's correct.
21:48 bowtie I know it is some times an issue, the solution is to run against each, but save file first
21:50 mikebg Hmm
21:51 bowtie gabor is working on a new dwimperl realise, due soon
21:51 mikebg Like, within the next couple days?
21:52 bowtie don't know, you will have to baddger him -> http://dwimperl.com/
21:54 mikebg I still would like to figure this out with this version, though.  I doubt I'm the only person who's ever had an issue like this.  If worse comes to worse I can try the Linux version of Padre, try another IDE, or even just use a text editor and a basic compiler.
21:54 mikebg But I feel like there's a way to get around this.
21:54 mikebg And I don't want to give up.
21:55 bowtie mikebg: have a look throught the tickes & wiki -> http://padre.perlide.org/trac/log/
21:56 bowtie mikebg: sorry to be vague, but I live in linux
21:56 mikebg OK, I could try that.  It seems like there are so many places to "
21:56 mikebg "start" when it comes to Perl.
21:56 mikebg And some give conflicting instructions.
21:56 mikebg I started with learn.perl.org
21:57 bowtie http://modernperlbooks.com/mt/index.html
21:57 mikebg This seems like it might be relevant: http://padre.perlide.org/trac/ticket/1474
21:57 bowtie http://shop.oreilly.com/product/0636920018452.do
21:59 bowtie mikebg: have you tried #1474
22:00 mikebg Yeah, that's the one I'm looking at now.
22:11 mikebg So it works in Padre 0.98?
22:11 bowtie mikebg: yes
22:12 mikebg How do I upgrade?  DWIM Perl comes with 0.94.
22:12 mikebg Is there any way to update it from within the program?
22:13 bowtie mikebg: to upgrade dwimperl you will have to wait for next version, of build your self starting with strawberry then install perl modules with cpan
22:14 mikebg Right, that's for DWIM Perl, but what about just the Padre component?
22:14 bowtie cpan Padre
22:16 mikebg OK...how do I do that?
22:16 mikebg from the cmd Window?
22:16 mikebg http://search.cpan.org/~plaven/Padre-0.98/lib/Padre.pm
22:16 bowtie mikebg: you need to review the vids
22:16 mikebg But that's clearly the Linux version, not the Windows version
22:16 mikebg Alright, I guess I can do that
22:17 bowtie mikebg: Padre in a perl module, that you can install from cpan
22:18 mikebg Seems like I've had bad luck with CPAN as well
22:21 bowtie mikebg: if I recal in those videos is about dwimperl and installing modules from cpan
22:23 mikebg But it's specific for Linux.  I feel like there could be issues unique to Windows.
22:24 bowtie Padre on Strawberry Perl v5 (released on 20 June 2011)
22:26 mikebg Hmm

22:26 botbot Changeset #529 http://padre.perlide.org/trac/changeset/529

22:28 bowtie Modern Perl Tutorial - part 01 - Install Perl, print Hello World
22:29 bowtie mikebg: Gabor did some great vids for newbees most in win32
22:43 mikebg Thank you, I will check those out!
