17:23 ToApolytoXaos greetings everyone.
17:25 ToApolytoXaos i guess you must have heard it before, but here it goes; i'm using padre under Debian testing and "Use external window for execution" does not open any terminal. Is there anything i should do?
17:47 bowtie_ ToApolytoXaos: hi
17:48 bowtie_ ToApolytoXaos: did you look at Tools->Prefs-Perl5 toggle external, I can not remember if you need a re-boot for the option to take place
17:49 ToApolytoXaos if i uncheck it, it would produce the output in Output window, and does not let me insert <STDIN> content
17:51 bowtie_ ToApolytoXaos: yes that is correct, you need to use external for that, if your app is going to prompt for data
17:52 ToApolytoXaos do you know why it won't open a terminal application like what is doing on Windows?
17:53 bowtie_ ToApolytoXaos: otherwise you can use the -> script arguments in tools->prefs-perl5
17:53 ToApolytoXaos can you enlighten me please?
17:53 bowtie_ ToApolytoXaos: what terminals do you have installed
17:53 ToApolytoXaos i could use xterm, that would do
17:54 bowtie_ ToApolytoXaos: I asked, what terminal types do you have installed
17:54 ToApolytoXaos i don't understand your question
17:55 bowtie_ ToApolytoXaos: do you know what synaptic is
17:55 ToApolytoXaos yes, i use it all the time; what about it?
17:55 ToApolytoXaos you mean if i use gnome terminal and such?
17:55 bowtie_ ToApolytoXaos: so go look, for installed terminals
17:55 bowtie_ ToApolytoXaos: yes
17:56 ToApolytoXaos well, i mentioned xterm from first place
17:57 shadowpaste "bowtie" at 217.168.150.38 pasted "$ find /usr/bin |grep term /us" (12 lines) at http://paste.scsys.co.uk/269944
17:57 bowtie_ ToApolytoXaos: see ^^
17:58 ToApolytoXaos http://pastebin.com/auwjVpxP
17:58 bowtie_ ToApolytoXaos: next time please use http://paste.scsys.co.uk/padre
17:59 ToApolytoXaos is there a particular reason or a personal preference?
18:00 bowtie_ ToApolytoXaos: yes, you can add subject and author
18:00 ToApolytoXaos why image is not clickable to take me to index page?
18:01 bowtie_ ToApolytoXaos: Padre version please
18:01 ToApolytoXaos 0.98, debian testing (jessie)
18:03 shadowpaste "bowtie" at 217.168.150.38 pasted "if ( defined $ENV{COLORTERM} )" (10 lines) at http://paste.scsys.co.uk/269945
18:04 ToApolytoXaos and where to place this?
18:05 bowtie_ ToApolytoXaos: see ^^ thats the chunk of code doing the work, so please check -> xterm and gnome-terminal both work, also see if you have $ENV{COLORTERM} set
18:06 stkowski joined #padre
18:06 ToApolytoXaos in place of gnome-terminal, i could add mate-terminal
18:06 bowtie_ ToApolytoXaos: you don't need to do any thing with it, I was just showing you the code that was launching the terminal
18:06 bowtie_ ToApolytoXaos: NO
18:07 bowtie_ ToApolytoXaos: check xterm works on your machine
18:07 bowtie_ ToApolytoXaos: see if you have $ENV{COLORTERM} set
18:07 ToApolytoXaos i use it right now bowtie
18:08 bowtie_ ToApolytoXaos: ok now create a really simple perl code -> hello world and test
18:08 ToApolytoXaos from padre?
18:09 bowtie_ ToApolytoXaos: yes
18:09 ToApolytoXaos i have it already open in front of me
18:11 shadowpaste "bowtie" at 217.168.150.38 pasted "#!perl use v5.10; use strict;" (8 lines) at http://paste.scsys.co.uk/269946
18:12 ToApolytoXaos what are you trying to say bowtie_, that i don't know how to use padre?
18:12 bowtie_ ToApolytoXaos: use above, save as hw.pl , then view in Padre and run, in both modes, internal and external
18:12 ToApolytoXaos you could just ask me to run an existing perl script of mine
18:13 bowtie_ ToApolytoXaos: I want you to use the most basic script, to remove any other issues, ok
18:15 ToApolytoXaos it runs it as a background process
18:15 ToApolytoXaos when i use external window
18:16 ToApolytoXaos the internal works fine
18:17 bowtie_ ToApolytoXaos: so you can see the output of -> background process in xterm
18:18 ToApolytoXaos i did not mention anything about xterm
18:18 bowtie_ ToApolytoXaos: so you can see the output of -> background process in a terminal
18:19 ToApolytoXaos all i said was that it runs as background process. that's the complain from padre itself upon unckeck-ing "External" and attempting to close it
18:19 bowtie_ ToApolytoXaos: paste please
18:19 ToApolytoXaos what to paste?!
18:19 ToApolytoXaos it's a GUI window!
18:21 bowtie_ ToApolytoXaos: when external is checked, do you see Hello World in a terminal window
18:21 ToApolytoXaos no
18:22 bowtie_ ToApolytoXaos: how did you launch padre
18:23 ToApolytoXaos ctrl-F2: padre
18:24 bowtie_ ToApolytoXaos: can you open a terminal please, and launch from there, then repeat above and see if there is any noisy in the terminal
18:25 ToApolytoXaos with external on, i run it; nothing happens
18:25 ToApolytoXaos i got an initial error though "Error: cannot set locale to 'en_GB'."
18:26 bowtie_ ToApolytoXaos: O, you will need to go and check your lang settings, latter
18:27 bowtie_ ToApolytoXaos: what is $ENV{COLORTERM} set to
18:27 ToApolytoXaos where to look for this?
18:28 bowtie_ ToApolytoXaos: env
18:28 ToApolytoXaos if I say "i don't see such thing", would it panic you? lol
18:29 bowtie_ ToApolytoXaos: no
18:29 ToApolytoXaos ah, that's an interesting thing
18:30 ToApolytoXaos inside xterm, colorterm is not visible, whereas inside mate-terminal it is
18:30 ToApolytoXaos COLORTERM=mate-terminal
18:30 bowtie_ ToApolytoXaos: thats a local config issue
18:31 bowtie_ ToApolytoXaos: try the following
18:31 bowtie_ close Padre
18:31 ToApolytoXaos done it already
18:31 bowtie_ in term -> export COLORTERM=gnome-terminal
18:31 bowtie_ start Padre
18:31 ToApolytoXaos in xterm you mean?
18:31 bowtie_ re test
18:32 bowtie_ ToApolytoXaos: in the terminal you are using to test
18:32 ToApolytoXaos and i think you meant COLORTERM=mate-terminal
18:32 bowtie_ NO NO NO
18:32 ToApolytoXaos OK OK OK
18:33 ToApolytoXaos it works, but with gnome-terminal which i don't use
18:33 ToApolytoXaos and it executes and stays open
18:33 ToApolytoXaos there's no "press any key to close" or whatsoever
18:34 bowtie_ ToApolytoXaos: cool
18:34 ToApolytoXaos why should a user be tight on gnome-terminal?
18:34 bowtie_ ToApolytoXaos: go re-read code chunk and you will know why
18:35 bowtie_ ToApolytoXaos: they should not, but it's what most of us here have used
18:36 bowtie_ ToApolytoXaos: if you want to go grab the Padre dev code from svn, you can do a patch for mate-terminal
18:36 ToApolytoXaos no, it's OK.
18:36 ToApolytoXaos i just got really disappointed with it
18:37 bowtie_ ToApolytoXaos: or you can go hack your local copy of Padre and replace gnome-terminal for mate-terminal look in Padre-Wx-Main.pm run-command should point you in the right direction
18:38 ToApolytoXaos for now, i'll stick with vim
18:38 bowtie_ ToApolytoXaos: I like gvim, multiple windows :)
18:39 ToApolytoXaos i use vim from terminal, gvim too...it's cool
18:39 sewi joined #padre
18:39 bowtie_ ToApolytoXaos: do you use vim-perl
18:39 ToApolytoXaos let me check if i have it installed as package
18:40 ToApolytoXaos nope, i don't
18:40 ToApolytoXaos but i'm cool
18:41 bowtie_ ToApolytoXaos: it's on github
18:41 ToApolytoXaos it's OK; i can live with what i have already
