05:02 gregg I have just installed a fresh Strawberry perl 64 (5.18.1) and then attempted to install Padre v1.00 which fails.  Where do I log the build errors?
05:02 gregg Install was via 'cpan Padre'
05:47 waxhead gregg, should show you in the cpan client...
05:48 waxhead normally it's one of the other modules not installing cleanly.

06:00 gregg Here is the cpan output
06:00 gregg Well some of it
06:00 gregg Hunk #1 succeeded at 8317 (offset 272 lines). if not exist gcc_mswudll mkdir gcc_mswudll process_begin: CreateProcess(NULL, -c "if not exist gcc_mswudll mkdir gcc_mswudll", ...) failed. make (e=2): The system cannot find the file specified. mingw32-make: [gcc_mswudll] Error 2 (ignored) if not exist ..\..\lib\gcc_dll mkdir ..\..\lib\gcc_dll process_begin: Crea
06:01 gregg Hmm... does not format well here.
06:01 gregg The line is:
06:01 gregg process_begin: CreateProcess(NULL, -c "if not exist ..\..\lib\gcc_dll mkdir ..\..\lib\gcc_dll", ...) failed.

11:11 botbot bowtie_, I'll tell that gregg when we see each other.

13:04 varanasi Installing plugins . . . are we supposed to use cpan?  I've tried a couple -- tidy and critic -- and they fail.  I suspect I am doing something dumb.
13:04 bowtie_ varanasi: hi
13:05 bowtie_ varanasi: what version of Padre
13:05 bowtie_ varanasi: what os you using
13:05 varanasi I'm using linux.
13:05 varanasi Let me check the Padre version
13:06 varanasi .90
13:08 bowtie_ varanasi: ok, you will need a more modern version of Padre, 0.90 is a older plugin api, suggest you use Padre 1.0 and latest plugins from cpan, ps don't forget to enable using Tools -> Plugin Manager ok
13:09 varanasi Sounds good.  Thanks. Is there a deb package of padre someplace?
13:09 bowtie_ varanasi: yes there is a 0.98, an there will soon be a 1.00
13:10 varanasi Great.
13:11 varanasi Maybe when I figure this out, I'll write a "How To Install Plugins."
13:11 bowtie_ varanasi: or you could go -> perlbrew and cpan see -> http://padre.perlide.org/trac/wiki/DownloadPerlbrew
13:13 bowtie_ varanasi: take a look at this instead -> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qu8-NzHZsXY
13:14 varanasi I'll look.  Thanks.
13:15 varanasi At the moment, I'm trying to install a newer Padre from cpan.
13:16 bowtie_ varanasi: ok
13:16 varanasi (I just apt-get ted before.
13:17 bowtie_ varanasi: if you are installing into system perl use debs , if using perlbrew use cpan or cpanm
13:18 varanasi Ok.  I guess this process will break in moment.
13:19 bowtie_ varanasi: it may not, the previous is just a good rule of thumb
13:26 varanasi So, it broke.
13:26 varanasi Is there a repository with versions later than .90?
13:29 bowtie_ varanasi: http://packages.debian.org/search?keywords=Padre&searchon=names&suite=all&section=all
13:29 bowtie_ varanasi: or https://metacpan.org/pod/Padre
13:32 varanasi duh.  Thanks for not calling me a doof.
13:37 bowtie_ varanasi: sounds like you need to stop, count to 10 and take a step back, and start again :)
13:37 bowtie_ varanasi: and breath :)
13:38 varanasi lol.  True
13:48 varanasi I vaguely remember going through this last time I tried Padre.
13:54 varanasi Well.  I've made a hash of it.
13:56 varanasi I think I shall just go back to .90 and the pre-packaged plugins.  I can run critic from a console.  I only need it occasionally.  Thanks for your help.
13:57 bowtie_ varanasi: look at going down the perlbrew route, with local perls, that you can hack, and leaving the system perl alone, that is what I do and most of the other devs here who told me to do so :)
13:58 varanasi Thanks.
14:00 bowtie_ varanasi: there is more than enough info in padre tack about this, just install perlbrew, then -> perlbrew install perl-5.18.1 -Dusethreads
14:01 bowtie_ varanasi: or what ever perl version you want, you can have several
14:01 bowtie_ varanasi: http://perlbrew.pl/
14:03 varanasi I really appreciate your advice.  I've goofed around with perlbrew before, when I was more a "gentoo" type.
14:03 varanasi But really I just need an IDE for perl that's reliable.
14:04 varanasi Eclipse occasionally mangles a file that it's not supposed to be saving or touching.
14:04 varanasi I've now got Padre to a state where I can't start it!
14:05 bowtie_ varanasi: then go for Padre 0.98 from deb until Padre 1.00 deb is released, which I image will be very soon
14:06 bowtie_ varanasi: also install padre plugins the same way you install Padre, ie deb
14:06 varanasi Unfortunately, the .98 on deb needs more updated dependencies.  That's where I went awry.
14:06 varanasi I'm just going to reboot this thing and see where I am then.
14:07 varanasi As I said, I'm grateful for you help.

16:09 dsteinbrunner Hey, trying to install Padre for the first time
16:10 dsteinbrunner this is on a windows box
16:10 dsteinbrunner and there is a test failure
16:10 dsteinbrunner there is an issue with how the home dir is reported in the test
16:11 dsteinbrunner I don't know much about windows so I'm not sure the best way it should be handled
16:12 dsteinbrunner http://pastebin.com/CGjsLBBT
16:48 dsteinbrunner hmm… I did that install from cpanm
16:51 dsteinbrunner when I just did a dmake test from the source that cpanm work with it passes
17:07 bowtie_ dsteinbrunner: hi, do you recall the test that had the issue
17:08 dsteinbrunner see the paste bin link
17:08 dsteinbrunner general under the perl dir
17:09 dsteinbrunner looking to see if it happens under the normal cpan cli
17:09 bowtie_ dsteinbrunner: Q what happends when you run test with prove -lv
17:10 Di-ima joined #padre
17:12 dsteinbrunner I'll let you low once the cpan install is done
17:24 dsteinbrunner well that is taking forever
17:25 bowtie_ dsteinbrunner: snap, I am running on a single i686 :)
17:26 dsteinbrunner I got lots of failed to find share dir
17:26 dsteinbrunner for dist 'Padre'
17:27 bowtie_ dsteinbrunner: did you look at http://dwimperl.com/
17:28 dsteinbrunner I know about it
17:28 dsteinbrunner I'm runnig current perl and wanted to check out Padre.. the latest version
17:28 bowtie_ dsteinbrunner: cool
17:29 dsteinbrunner and wanted to report this issue since it seems like something small but could cause others issues
17:30 bowtie_ dsteinbrunner: we seam to have a lack of win32 smokers, we have travis on github and perlbrew, now there is a challenge for you :)
17:31 dsteinbrunner well I have padre running now
17:31 dsteinbrunner since the test works, just not under cpanm
17:32 dsteinbrunner and maybe other installers like cpanp and cpan
17:32 dsteinbrunner and I'm sure it is just a Win32 issue
17:32 bowtie_ dsteinbrunner: yep, it sets either Author or Release Testing env, iirc I don't remember which :)
17:33 bowtie_ botbot tell dsteinbrunner yep, it sets either Author or Release Testing env, iirc I don't remember which :)
17:33 botbot bowtie_, I'll tell that dsteinbrunner when we see each other.
