11:42 sivoais I posted this <http://www.talyarkoni.org/blog/2013/11/18/the-homogenization-of-scientific-computing-or-why-python-is-steadily-eating-other-languages-lunch/> to the PDL ML yesterday
11:43 sivoais and today another side of conversation came up <https://tools.ipol.im/mailman/archive/discuss/2013-November/001131.html> regarding reproducibility and library API stability
13:09 _vicash_ sivoais: i came across PDL through another blog post and for financial plotting and managing large data sets of says 4 million points in a plot even R was really slow.. then some how i was looking at ways to do things in Perl and PDL was mentioned somewhere as an unknown tool which worked.. and it does.. what R takes about > 1 minute for to plot or crashes, PDL does in 6 seconds.
13:10 _vicash_ PDL needs more publicity and marketing that it doesnt get unlike Python toolsets and R
13:11 _vicash_ maybe some open source application needs to be written in it that makes it the mainstream..
13:14 sivoais yeah,
13:14 sivoais I wish I had time to implement some of my ideas for marketing...
14:52 _vicash_ sivoais: when i was trying to figure out whether to use Catalyst or Plack or similar Perl modules for web dev work for a product I read Plack tutorials that were written by the author of Plack. he had written it as an Advent Calendar thing... i feel that for PDL's popularity increase if we can come up wtih a set of blog posts that demonstrate how to tackle a set of problems that are real-world research/industry problems .. that would be a good start
14:54 _vicash_ the problem as i see with PDL is that it is tough to figure out how to use it effectively for some standard problems that NumPy or R are good for
14:54 _vicash_ it takes a while and a bunch of practice to do so and PDL experts can help bridge that gap
17:50 sivoais _vicash_: that's a great idea! I love the Perl advent calenders. You should post it as a suggestion on the PDL ML if you have time. Perhaps under this thread <http://mailman.jach.hawaii.edu/pipermail/perldl/2013-November/008382.html>
17:53 _vicash_ sivoais: will do. i am not subscribed to PDL ML so wiill have to do that first :)
18:42 _vicash_ sivoais: i replied to that mail and let's see if it shows up ..
19:28 sivoais it showed up :-)
